This movie really hit me. Especially with the main message of learning to forgive yourself and finding the strength to move on.
Everyone was telling me “oh you’re gonna cry”, almost every time they told me to react to this movie. Which is the reason I didn’t cry. But just because I didn’t have tears, doesn’t mean the movie didn’t connect with me. It not only connected with my heart, but also connected with my soul. It truly is a beautiful story that I will never forget.

My wife was born deaf, she has told me how hard she had it at school, she got bullied and had a really bad time trying to learn like everybody else. She has also worn a hearing aid since she was a kid. This movie hit me like a truck when I saw it like a year ago, makes me understand what she might have gone trough and how mean people can be. I just wanna say that this movie was awesome and makes me love my wife even more if that makes any sense. I try my best to make her happy, I sometimes don't even notice she is deaf, cause she is normal like any other woman, but special to me!

i bet. before the 2000’s, schools didn’t even allow sign language to be used, (well for where i’m from anyway) they didn’t provide any kind of support and just expected us to learn and work our way around the difficulties. i feel bad for those people. i was born in 2007 so it wasn’t as bad and they were starting to provide support, though i still felt out of place. i’ve always been in main stream schools until late last year i was able to find a high school with a deaf unit now i’ve dropped school because my mental health got worse than before, i’m doing okay now and i hope that your wife is too

I know this film is difficult for translators.
but "I want to help you live" part was subtle. in Japanese, Ishida says "I want you to help me live."
I like this line that makes Shoko realize that she is not only protected.
They are to help each other.
Ishida's kind word to want her to like herself.

I’m Japanese and I love your reaction videos! By the way, the scene where Shoko told Shoya that she liked him is a little complicated when its on subtitles. The word “like” is “好き(Suki)” in Japanese, but because of her speaking abilities, it sounded like she said “月(Tsuki)” which means “the moon” in English. So that’s why Shoya misunderstood.
Also, in Japan, we only say the word “好き(Suki)” to the opposite sex when we mean “I love you” as a romantic phrase. So Shoko probably loved Shoya, both as a friend and as a lover.

He may have been a bully, but I honestly put 90% of the blame onto the teachers. When you're a child, you're still learning how to react to new things. Kids who are taught how to handle diversity well become kind and caring, whereas people who aren't have a higher chance of reacting to it badly. He was just a kid who didn't react well, enabled by everybody around him until it no longer benefited them. They all were. But instead of correcting it when it was happening, the teacher just let it happen until there was no way to ignore it anymore, and then instead of telling everybody off and having a proper sit down about it all, he pinned it all on one kid and turned that kid into the scape goat. Yelling at him and getting everybody to gang up on him. None of the kids in that classroom turned out okay. And a big part of that is because of the teacher.

I believe mother basically was expecting daughter to get stronger through additional hardship at home. The "you gotta do better to receive my affection" treatment.
She was acting that way because she herself felt weak and powerless in that situation. Abandoned by her husband and scorned by his family, unable to help(and later protect) her child.
Naturally, in terms of artistic undertones it signifies her cutting the connection with her suffering child, refusing to hear her voice. In a way it also makes her "deaf" to her own children, isolated in her own house about as much as both of her daughters.

I was also severely bullied in middle school and high school, and I had to transfer more than once. There was even a point where it was a teacher who broke my hearing aids and injured me rather than the usual students. This movie has a very emotional meaning to me, having had these same experiences. It shows the harsh realities of living in the world as a disabled individual and doesn't sugarcoat the mental trauma brought on by dealing with the relentlessness of negative people and the limitations of whatever disabilities and/or illnesses you have. 3:45 in this scene that green hair girl (forgot her name) opens her mouth way earlier than others and shoko seems to have noticed and that’s why she started singing I’m not sure if my interpretation is correct but I’ll like to belive that she deliberately opened her mouth to embarrass shoko just shows that bullying can come in many forms sometimes even the one being bullied doesn’t realize

OH NAH, let's go! This is literally my favorite anime movie til' this day. It hits way too close to home on so many levels, that every time I watch it or experience somebody watching it, I just burst into tears in the same 4 or 5 moments. I've yet to bring myself to go through the manga of it, but I definitely will.
The weirdest and also kinda precious thing that happened to me when watching for the first time was during that last scene, the moment all the X-s fall down and I've started wiping my face with the same motions Ishida did just a few moments later. Man, I can't even properly articulate what I feel about this movie, because I still get too emotional to do so. Maybe one day.

31:20 I am Japanese. It's long, Nicholas, but I hope you can read it.
In Japan, men sometimes express "I love you" as "The moon is beautiful."
At this time, Ishida misheard Nishimiya's "Suki" as "Tsuki". This is not a scene that Ishida intentionally knew and expressed, but a scene in which his feelings of "liking" for Nishimiya happened to come out unintentionally as words.
This story is derived from an episode in which the Japan writer Natsume Soseki pointed out to a student who translated "I love you" as "I love you" when he was an English teacher, "Japan people don't say that, but the moon is beautiful."
In Japan, there are cases where the expression is not direct but indirect and profound. This expression is so beautiful that it is still sometimes used as an elegant expression of affection.
This kind of expression is sometimes used outside of this anime, so just knowing the meaning of this expression will allow you to enjoy the anime even deeper!

This movie is amazing and really resonates with me on a personal level.
I used to pretty much be in the same position as Shoko when growing up, being that I was hard-of-hearing and wore hearing aids. Getting constantly harassed and bullied in Elementary and Middle School (even High School sometimes), it very much weighed on my mental health just like it did for Shoko. Seeing all of that reflected in this film just really strikes a chord with me, and the manga is even better too.

I'm happy my favourite reactor likes this piece, Nick. I think it's a masterpiece that painstakingly depicts the process of regretting past actions, reforming and learning to forgive oneself. On the other hand the villain, Ueno, who struggles to do so, might actually be the child who needs the most emotional care, and I just can't bring myself to hate her. Having read the original, I've come to understand her a little better. By the way, I didn't realise when I first saw the movie that Sahara's VA was the same as Mikasa's.

to me personally, “hitting way too close to home” is an understatement, when I was little, I had trouble making friends, so I found comfort in violence (for some reason), and hurt a lot of people, but as I grow older I can finally see the damage I've done, to the person I care, to my family, even to the people that is no longer with us, so through out my life I've been wanting to kill myself for this burning self-hatred, but if I do that I would hurt the person that cares about me even more, so I sealed myself away from the rest of the world, but this movie helps me realize there is a chance for redemption, even for the worst scum like me
so I will rate this movie 10/10 absolutely must watch, this movie changed my life in some degree

I am so beyond glad to see that you got just as much enjoyment out of this movie as I did. At it's simplest, this movie is about a boy learning to forgive himself, to love himself and to understand his own value.
People make mistakes that others may find unforgivable every day. Having the ability to recognize those flaws in yourself, work toward correcting your course by taking accountability for those mistakes and being attentive to the needs of those around you takes more courage than anything in the world. It takes an extreme amount of resolve to analyze yourself in this way. Some even find the struggle worth ending their life over. But you have to courage to do that, endure that punishment, build relationships and come out the other side knowing that you have people that support you and see value in you beyond your flaws, then that is about the most self aware and fulfilled that you can ever hope yourself to be.
I think this film does such a better job of visually and verbally communicating mental illness, disability and the mental struggle of trying to accept yourself than I've seen in any film of its kind.
Every time I watch this film, it breaks me down and puts me back together every time.

The message this movie gives us is amazing and wonderful. Redemption exists but people need to work a lot on themself to change and need to choose to move on. Ishida did but a little bit complicated to Ueno and Kawaii who both are bullies too but one didn't hide what she thinks and the other one is a hypocrite.

I liked bullying, however, over time... starting from middle school,The situation turned around for me, until high school, I started being bullied... after graduating, I was still traumatized by that... I had problems with my personality, which became introverted, insecure,And overthinking with the people around me. Oh dang, you'd already reacted to this! This is still so far my favorite animated film. There's a lotta great ones out there, some I can even admit to be objectively better. But this stuck with me in so many ways that others just can't, and for a lotta the reasons that I'm sure most folks have already left in the comments as well. Everything about it just hits. The way the piano keys feel weighty, where you can even hear the hammer hit the string. The soft, warm colors and lines that KyoAni's perfected. The subtlety in the facial animations and movements that are easy to miss (it's catching one of these that's very reason that Kawai is still my most hated character). The camera angles that often put one in a sort of first-person view, not really in the same head as the characters, but giving an idea of where they're looking and how they're feeling. Everything, man.

Very relatable movie for me. I was bullied throughout school, especially in high school, and was very introverted in general. I used to walk around with my head down looking at the ground instead of at eye level. It's not like I didn't have friends, but there wasn't anyone I really clicked with until my junior year of high school. A friend of mine moved away at the end of my sophomore year, but there was a girl he was childhood friends with, and on the first day of my junior year she saw that I was alone at lunch and invited me to sit with her friends at their lunch table. They were all either a year older or a year younger than me, cool outsider types who were into art and music. From then my life changed a lot, I became more outgoing and would hang out with them outside of school and started engaging in extracurricular activities. It's just a shame it took me that long to open up, kind of a bummer to know that there was this group of people I really connected with but was born a year too late or a year too early to have met them earlier in my school life.

Its an amazing story of a diligent woman trying to be the best mother she can, even though she has barely any knowledge on how to raise wolf children. It's happy, it's sad, it's joyful and euphoric at times, and sometimes its downright tragic. The animation is gorgeous, the sound design is spectacular, and the soundtrack is so majestic, it fits very well with many of the scenes.
