    Hey guys Prez here👋🏼
    We wanted to get this out for you guys sooner but this was the HARDEST edit I ever sat through, the last 30-40 min of the movie I would cry every editing session😅(Much uglier tears than the ones in this reaction where I held back😂) but after many weeks I finally managed to push through
    This movie was more than we could have expected and now that I've seen it more than once its become one of my all time favourites (not just anime), it hit on a lot of subjects that I'm sure some of you might be able to relate to as well, so we hope you enjoy our first reaction and we would love to hear your opinions of the movie in the comments.
    This was trully a Masterpiece❤

If you look very closely at the singing scene u can see that kawai san started mouthing the words early and nishimiya looked over and thats why she started singing. Ueno is the very first person that actually helped nishimya because of this she started falling for her studies.
      In the ferris wheel you can actually see that Ueno hate that Nishimya don’t have self confidence and brought it back again in the fence scene. She really hates people that don’t like themselves to be honest because of Euno and Shota Nishimya started having self confidence

      @merdufer 5 месяцев назад +138

      We can see the teacher laugh at Shoya's deaf jokes in the manga. And he said Shoya was hopeless and would never achieve anything. When Shoya turned out OK at the end, the teacher said "maybe what happened wasn't such a bad thing". He had no business being a teacher. He was a monster. But then, people who are defending the teacher also say things like "the problem is Shoya's mom didn't punish him enough", so it's fair to say they know nothing about education.

    38:33 The words for "I like/love you" ( _suki_ ) and "moon" ( _tsuki_ ) are pronounced very similarly in Japanese. Nishimiya could have made herself clear by signing, but she wanted to say it out loud.
    Ironically, Shoya's confused response "The moon? It's pretty, isn't it?" was almost an unintentional confession. The phrase "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?" is considered a poetic way of saying "I love you."

    So in the manga things are explained better but they did put hints in the movie. Here are some things that can be missed on the first watch.
    Ueno ( the black haired girl) is into shoja (the main character) and that is why she tried to imitate him when they were young and keeps doing it when older. She also has a reading disability so gets frustarted and insecure about it. It also trippled her work load when trying to take notes for Shouko.
    The teacher in the begining does nothing to accomodate Shouko and is part of the problem. He sees her as a burdan and is the type of preson that is just there to get a pay check. He only does something once his boss is present. This is show when he clearly knows and calls out that Shoya was bullying but did nothing about it before.
    Kawaai ( the blond girl that plays victim) is one of the worst. She pertends to be nice and caring, but bullied just as much, just in subtle ways. If you watch the choir scene again you will see that she intentionally pretends to start singing knowing that Shouko is watching her for a que to start. Getting Shouko to embasmrres herself and get alienated by the others. Yet, she is the first to break into tiers and play victim when called out.
    Shoukos mom is one of the worst. If you pay attention on second viewing, you will notice that she never uses sign language with Shouko. But the sister and grandmother do. She also sent Shouko to a normal school instead of a special needs school. This is because in the manga it is explained that the father left them because he thought having a deaf daughter was to much effort. The mother blames Shouko for this and refuses to acknowlage that her daughter is deaf, relying on Yuzu (the sister) to translate everying for her.
    The red head guy absulutly hates bullying. To the point where in the manga, he gets into an altercation with a teacher over it. Cant remember all the details off hand.
    Hope this helped understand the characters a bit better.
    Absolute masterclass of a film. Thank you Kyoto Ani ❤

      I didn't remember about Ueno's problem, even so I can say that in the manga she is not so bad and can generate a little more empathy than in the movie.
      I don't think Shouko's mother is that bad either, as I remember when it is shown when the husband leaves her she was already waiting for the sister, in addition the husband's family implying that it is her fault that Shouko was deaf, as if she was defective. Even with that trauma, she did everything possible for her family, but she didn't know how to handle the situation with Shouko, trying to make her strong and cold like her so that she wouldn't get hurt.
      Finally, also remember that the redhead in the manga mentions that he wanted to be a teacher and then explains that at school he also suffered bullying, but when he grew up he saw his bully that he was going to be father and that was when he got the idea of being teacher, implying that he was looking for some kind of revenge against the bully, although in the end it seems that he reconsiders.

      Ueno might be very confrontational and harsh with Shoko, but is also relatable. Her rage at Shokos attempted suicide that ended up almost killing Shoya is also very understandable.

    The cinematography during the umbrella scene is great. When Shoya cuts off Yuzuru's face, you just see the little legs with the shoes and it is almost like he is speaking to his younger self about himself and has a lot of guilt which he is still struggling to face.

      And then she raises the umbrella, and you can see her eyes move around as she studies his face. She isn't looking at him as her sister's childhood bully anymore, but as a person. It's probably my favourite scene in the whole movie.

      Personally, I think there is not much teachers can do other than give verbal warnings to the bully. Parents are oversensitive when teachers teach consequences to their children, which has led to a ban on almost all forms of punishment in this generation. At the end of the day, education starts from home. Children's first examples and biggest influence are their parents, who are their biggest role models. Shoya was not given any serious warning, punishment, or consequence for his actions by his mother. Shoya's mom replaced the hearing aids and apologized to Nishimiya's mom, but she did not ask her son to at least apologize to Nishimiya. As for the victims, why did their parents always wait until their children were already in the worst state before taking action? I'm not perfect but if my child loses something so expensive, I will immediately call the school to ask about it. Maybe my child's clumsiness caused the first and second instances, but the third instance after I instructed her to be careful? It's clear that there's a problem, but Nishimiya's mother doesn't call the school until the 8th time she loses hearing aids and she got hurt. That's why I think parents play bigger roles in children's lives no matter where they are and what happens to them.

    • @merdufer
      @merdufer 5 месяцев назад +15

      @@aisyahomar2516 Shoya was not given any serious punishment by his mother? What kind of home education do you think is appropriate? By the time she learned about what happened, things had already spun out of control, and Shoya was already actively being bullied. If you think Shoya's mom asking him to pay back the money wasn't enough of a punishment and he needed more at that point, I honestly don't know what to think. You really think a teenage boy driven to the edge of suicide was not given enough punishment? Really? What needed to happen was prevention, and for that to happen, the teacher had to tell Shoya's mom what was happening before things got out of control. And he didn't. He sat idly by until things got too bad for him to ignore, and then he pinned everything on one kid. He was incompetent and an asshole.

      @@aisyahomar2516Oh in Japan teachers can do more than simply verbal warnings. Other cultures are different, for example in Mexico a teacher can fail you if you don't behave in class, you can be very good in the subject and still he will fail you XD, and I say "he" cuz I just realized female teachers don't really do that, they simply give you extra homework haha. Fun Fact: All the x's were added by hand in post.
    This movie is amazing at showing so many perspectives of how bullying is a personal and communal social problem and creates victims of everyone involved, but that people of different backgrounds and personalities can grow or evolve from the trauma.
    Ishida acted out in grade school, bullying Shoko because he,was the class clown; always looking for attention. Ueno, who showed signs of liking Ishida, went along with and encouraged the bullying whiel the two ex-freidns just stood back to watch Ishida's antics... until the a-hole teacher, who knew and saw everything and still did nothing, singling out Ishida out in front of the whole class and systematically tore away his friends.
    Ueno is nasty to Shoko when they first meet up again because that's the only way of relating to Shoko she knew - all cued from grade-school Ishida. But Ishida had changed and that forces Ueno to either continue being chained by the past, or to move forward.
    The two ex-friends turned bullies felt ashamed of their past (as shown from when Ueno wanted to get the gang back together, or at least try to return to relationships pre-Shoko) and is why the blond is ok with Ishida not wanting to see him ever again... but later you find out they fished Ishida out of the river after his fall.
    Sahara faces her cowardice. The glasses girl realizes her cruelty as the accuser and exposer of Ishida's past, Ishida's two new friends decide to forgive Ishida, Shoko's mother and sister become friends with the family (and yes, Shoko's mom felt so powerless that she has a tendency to resort to violence first by ripping out Ishida's mom's earring, and after fighting with Ueno.)
    Even Ueno, the black haired girl, begins to learn sign-language. She's closer to a classic tsundere, just that she puts up a front when she gets easily embarrassed.
    Bullying is a social disease that infects everyone exposed and makes victims of us all, whether you were the bullied, the bully or a bystander who did nothing. A Silent Voice is an amazing film that can capture all the nuances without being obvious, preachy or conceited.I feel like you guys missed the meaning of the x's on people's faces. It's the literal visual representation of Ishida's self-isolation. In order to protect himself after the bullying he received from grades school, he closed himself off from forming any social attachments of friends... literally he can't look people in the face. All the x's were added by hand in post.

  • @MillyKKitty
    @MillyKKitty 5 месяцев назад +25

    The movie focuses on one of the themes of the manga, to send the message that everyone has parts of themselves that they're ashamed of. But since there's a lot of content in the manga, they had to cut or change some parts to make the movie more coherent.
    For example, Mashiba had an entire backstory, motivation and arc, but you don't really get to see his character shine.
    Out of everyone in the movie, I think Ueno might have gotten the short end of the stick, since it can't really focus on her part, or else it would derail the focus out of the main characters. From what scenes and dialogue Ueno gets, there is a bit more clearance on her emotional state in the manga.
    She did indeed like Shoya, and when she realized he likes, or thinks he likes Shoko, during the first time they meet, she tears up as she is walking away.
    Her biggest character flaw, is that she assumes Shoko thinks like her, so she assumes Shoko does things to get back at her on purpose.
    Like everyone else, she miscommunicates. And after she didn't stick up to Shoya, she most likely felt guilty about it, but projected that guilt onto Shoko, and strenghtened her belief that Shoko was out to get her.
    But the moment Shoko says that she hates herself, it breaks Ueno's idea of Shoko, and at the same time, the idea of herself. And that's the moment Ueno realizes, that she hates herself as well.
    After all of this, Ueno's arc would come to aclose at the end, as for the first time, she actually tries to communicate with Shoko by using sign language. The scene hits when you actually know what her real issue was, but it is much more subtle in the movie, that a lot of people just see her being mean in that moment.

    an interesting scene is outside of the hospital when Shoko is on her knees and appologizing to Shota's mother it's probably the first time she mean it! usually since the beginning appologizing herself is like a force of habbit.

    There's a subtle moment in the beginning that most people miss. The girl with glasses in music class noticed that Shoko was watching her to know when to start singing. The girl with the glasses intentionally pretends to start singing to mess Shoko up and then be the hero telling her that she'll help.

    When I was a kid, up until early days in highschool, I was bullied on a daily base. I even had to change schools at some point because of trauma that lead me to a path that Ishida was going towards at the very beginning (the bridge scene). Watching this movie for the very first time, I remember I had to pause it and take breaks at least 3-4 times because I was getting heavily emotional, I was remembering things, I was relating to things and it was just too much. After I finished it, a long time passed, but I never stopped thinking about it all and then I decided to re-watch it ... and so I did. This movie might me the absolute TOP movies I have ever witnessed in my life, for obvious personal reasons. I know that people could probably find flaws, or argue it's not THE BEST, but in my eyes and heart - it deffinetely is the best.
    Thank you guys for watching A Silent Voice and thank you for giving me the opportunity to re-watch this absolute masterpiece again with you two ♥

    The thing is Ueno at least open about it. She may be bad but she is also Honest. While Kawai trying to act innocent. She does things to get recognition. If you rewatch the singing scene you will notice she open her mouth to trigger Shouko into singing, then plays the nice girl. She is loud in classroom to turn people against Shoya and play victim. Ueno was initially nice to shoko too, until the teacher insults her reading and shoko gets a pass. Thats like getting a special treatment. Also about Kawai the scene where she shouted to the class about Shoya secret, it was because Mashiba was about to know her part in bullying too. She doesnt want her good image the others sees her to be questioned or tainted

    This is easily the movie that affects me the most out of any movie I've ever seen. I can't even believe how well made it is, and how well it portrays depression, anxiety, and self-acceptance. It hurts to watch because it hits so close to home. The part that hits me probably harder than anything else is when he's on the balcony praying to God and making promises if only God will help him just this once. I've been there in my own way, and that scene is just so insanely real. Pleading and promising because it feels like there's simply no other way out of the pit that you feel absolutely engulfed by.

  • @willpina
    @willpina 5 месяцев назад +62

    The thing about Ueno is that she is 100% right about Shoko. She's always had, understandably, a victim personality and hated herself. She couldn't see things from a different perspective. Which coincidentally, was the same problem Ueno had, as she could only see herself as a victim and couldn't empathize with Shoko's situation.
    Like many people pointed out, the teacher and Kawai-san were the worst. He allowed the bullying to continue and she laughed at other kids remarks saying thing like stop it or you shouldn't say that, but in a jokingly, playful way. She also created the false start in the chorus, just to be able to be seem like the hero when she volunteered to help Shoko.

    • @lordmuaddib
      @lordmuaddib 5 месяцев назад +13

      ueno is the one that victimise herself more than anything, and because she can't be honest to herself shes lashing her truth to everyone else.. without following her own advices. just because she feels she's right it doesn't give her any rights to do what she did, or say what she said

      interesting take because i never saw shoko as having a victim personality. quite the opposite actually. she WAS a victim and yet never acted like it. was continuously kind to everyone, forgiving, and always believed she was the problem and the burden.

    • @zyedaph
      @zyedaph 4 месяца назад +1

      O don't think Ueno believes Shoko has a victim personality. She doesn't like that Shoko is too nice. She wants Shoko to complain. She thinks Shoko is angry and sad that she's being bullied and that she's just not showing it. It's her personal issue too. Basically she's frustrated that Shoko's still nice and happy despite her condition and all the bullying. Also, it doesn't help that she probably likes Ishida and hates that he gives her extra attention.

    • @willpina
      @willpina 4 месяца назад +2

      @@zyedaph you are kinda right. There's a lot of projection in why Ueno hates Shoko. She doesn't understand why Shoko doesn't react the way she would. But Ueno doesn't think Shoko is happy. Ueno actually believes that if Shoko would just admit that she hates her and starts showing her "true" emotions, she would be happy. Again, it's projection because Ueno can't really show her own "true" emotions towards Ishida either.

    It’s not necessarily that the movie wants you to hate her, but to understand that one person can cause so much harm to others in her life because either she doesn’t know any better, or not mature enough, or different points of view, personalities etc. AND understand that she is also human full of mistakes but also capable of change as you can see at the end.

    I see myself a lot in Ishida. I wasn't a bad bully in elementary really, but I did join in bullying one guy a few times just to try to be "cool", because I was unpopular. The way Ishida was after he started getting bullied, that was like me. I was bullied and no one really looked at me positively, and much like him I, even to this day, feel like people talk about me behind my back when they're actually not (though it has happened). I think if I didn't have my two friends in middle school that I would turn out just like Ishida... I was very lucky with that, even-though I don't speak with them these days.
    This is probably one of my favourite movies of all time.

    I like how you said at 1:07:53; He's crying from happiness. I've always thought if it as crying from relief. As mean as Ishida was a kid, he met heavy hardships and bullying which caused him to blame himself for the pain to everyone around him, so he shut himself away from everyone. In the end he finally did what he said, he was going to open up to the world again. And he managed to do so, he managed to let go of his burdens, forgive himself and allow the sound and experiences in, and he's relieved of his burdens. Love this movie. I love the manga a lot more than the movie though. Do recommend it as a read!

    I wrote this comment on another reaction, intending it to be a little explanation on why Ueno isn't as simple as people make her to be, and how kawaii is actually a bad person, but it turned out to actually be a full character analysis essay lmao, enjoy
    TLDR:Ueno>>>>>>>>>>>Kawaii(characters analysis)
    The fact that people hate on Ueno more than on Kawaii infuriates me. For some reason I don't dislike Ueno that much. Yeah, she was an asshole, but she's trying to change.
    Ueno
    To my understanding, Ueno is a really easily influenced person. She, at first, when Shoko got transferred to their school, she was nice with her, even taking notes for Shoko in her notebook in class, having to transcript everything in her notebook at home probably. So she was putting in effort to help Shoko, that show's that, at heart, she's a good person.
    What changed that was the fact that the others started to bully Shoko, and she went along because, as I said, she is easy to influence. Her obvious crush on Ishida made her get to his side and start bullying Shoko.
    A thing that I picked up on while watching your reaction is that, when Ishida screamed in Shoko's ear and scared her, Ueno laughed, cause everyone was laughing, and "her beloved" Ishida did, so instinctually she did too. But after that you can see remorse, she felt bad for laughing(8:42)
    You can easily see that she is doing all that for attention, more exactly for Ishida's attention, in that scene when they meet at the crosswalk; she starts talking to Ishida, sees Shoko, and then, thinking that Ishida would enjoy that, asks if he wants to make fun of Shoko. When she sees that Ishida doesn't approve her behavior, gets frustrated an leaves.
    Another aspect to take in consideration is the fact that after everything that happened in 6th grade, the friend group was broken. Ueno, being an immature 6 grader, put the blame, of course, on Shoko, and started hating her.
    That hate, combined with jealousy lead to the Ferris wheel incident.
    She's also bad at digesting her emotions, so when Ishida fell, she, of course, blamed that on Shoko. But when Shoko's mom started fighting her(that was the scene when I finally understood Ueno's character, probably the first moment when you could actually deduce what she's feeling underneath her tough girl, bully facade), you could see that it was just the way Ueno was copping with Ishida's situation, it was a desperate cry for someone to understad her feelings. She was saying all that stuff, but underneath she was just broken by what happened, not knowing how to exteriorize it.
    Everything she did was terrible, but you can kinda understand what made her behave like that, and you can see that she isn't unredemable, she was and can be a good person, hence the fact that she took care of Ishida during his coma.
    "Even after all this, I still can't bring myself to like Nishimiya" That line, harsh as it is, means that she wants to like Shoko, she just didn't process her emotions on everything that happened, it takes time, not many people can make an instant 180, and her process of maturing is slow, but it exist, you can see that she is changing in the final scene when they reunite at school(also, I love the "baka" scene).
    Kawaii
    On the other hand there is Kawaii, which is probably one of the characters I hate the most in fiction. She is the worst out of this kids. She did as much harm as any of the other kids; even if she didn't stand out when they were bullying Shoko, she was still in the group, enjoying the show.
    She has a way of making sure that nobody realises when she does something bad. In the scene when they are in the music class and Shoko starts earlier than everybody, it is actually Kawaii who acted as she is starting to sing, tricking Shoko into starting early. And for sure that wasn't the only moment when she's been the bully, but that's a scene we've been shown.
    What infuriates me the most about her is that she's a goody-two-shoes. She perversely does all this things while mentaining her image. And when her narcissistic ass gets accused of something, she plays the innocent girl, throwing others under the buss, and nobody smells her bullshit, because nobody realises how much of a terrible person she is.
    And while Ueno is trying to change, there is no sign that Kawaii is changing. Yeah, she is acting nice, but under that facade she's probably as rotten as always. Even those necklaces or whatever those were seem like it's just another attempt to make herself look good in front of others.
    What doesn't help Ueno's image at all is the fact that she doesn't censor anything, she is too blunt, but I preffer a bully like her over an evil narcissist like Kawaii
    PS: The fact that I wrote all that shows how good of a movie, this is, and how well written the characters are. Truely a masterpiece

Us as native English speakers can kind of understand what she is saying but can tell it’s still really difficult for her. Espically the “I love you scene” the audience can clearly tell what she’s trying to say but Shoyo is unable to grasp it. Beautiful movie

    My take in the end with the little light surrounded by darkness is that no matter how bad things get you can always rely in thise around you to help steer you toward the light cause there is a point where the darkness can overwhelm you and take control and dark thoughts such as suicide, harming others, etc. takes control but with the right people Shoya can finally begin to live just as he has done the same to Shoko

    one movie that you need to watch but i d suggest you do it off camera with the intention to focus on the movie, is
    Ghost in the Shell.
    One of the best movies in the history of cinema in its entirety that has inspired countless hollywood movies and directors (such as The Matrix , Westworld etc). It exlpores themes of identity, individuality and meaning among many others. A great show with lots of action mystery and philosophical inquiries that will stay with you for life.

    The fear and panic on Cara's face is so real during that balcony scene. The movie might felt quite triggering for some people tbh. I remember that's almost like my reaction on Hannah's scene in 13 reasons why. My emotions were everywhere but moreso afraid.
