The process of Frieren slowly coming to grasp with how Himmel felt about her back then and realizing her own feelings about him is so well done in this show. Himmel fully understood that his love would be an unrequited one, that Frieren would be incapable of returning his feelings in his lifetime. Now Frieren looks back and understands what she could not comprehend back then. So sad, so beautiful.
the craziest thing to me is that surely he was offered many consorts from all the different kingdoms that they served….yet he loved frieren so much he died without furthering his lineage or ever marrying. now that is TRUE love !
There's also an element I think of Himmel realising that it's deeply unfair to Frieren to outright confess his feelings to her. You can tell that his conversations with Old Man Voll affected him and made him realise that the fate of someone from a long-lived race who loves a human is really very tragic. He doesn't want Frieren to go through the pain of spending millennia without him and eventually forgetting his face.
The visual story telling, maan... The clock tower standing between them, symbolizing time. And the shadows behind the two of them representing how much of their life have passed.... I watch this for 64 time and still got my eyes teary.
As a manga reader (and therefore one who loves hinting at shiz) - the flight spell is definitely 100% something frieren couldn't do when adventuring with Himmel and co. It's a trait that sticks out to those who know her.
Notice that Fern's bracelet the Lotus is in full bloom, showing that love has or will blossom fully into it's full form. Frieren's ring, however, is still a simple bud and hasn't bloomed yet, showing that Himmel's love will never fully come to fruition, even if it still exists and is still eternal.
my theory here is that the moment where Frieren was the one who picked the ring and not Himmel is that it symbolizes how Frieren actually loved Himmel, but she never understood or realized what it meant for her.
for an elf, it's normally ok to postpone important decision and take some time to process emotions. Unfortunately this is not the case when a human is involved in those decision/emotions.
The whole episode was a setup for that last scene, which is why it hit's so hard. In the beginning of the episode where they reach the town you see Frieren look up at the clock tower, and then everything front to back is setup! This show is just a masterclass in art!
@@Youalrightboi Maybe... but as a personal preference... I don't like the 'explosiveness/brightness' [I can't find the right word😅] for Tanjiro, during fights.... that's why he's below Himmel, number 2 of course
oh man so many sublte things in this episode, firstly the design of the ring, Frieren's flower is not blooming, symbolizing their love will never bloom (meanwhile Fern's flower is blooming, so we can be chill on that side of things) and the clock tower standing between them as an explanation that the reason their love never came to be is time (or the main one at least). What a show this is, so good. On a side note, the fact that Frieren didn't get rizzed up by Himmel is kind of insane, i think every single woman on the planet would've been in love for him since like.. day3.
@@labrynianrebel who knows maybe, but i feel like most of the time he was treated almost like a god, i doubt many women actually considered the possibility of a relationship with him. Also yeah, he obviously never got over his first love.
I mean, the show explicitly states that elves lack strong romantic and sexual drives. She did fall for him, it just took the better part of a century for the feelings that started during their adventure to actually come to the front.
After this episode Milet's ED lyrics makes even more sense. Especially after Frieren's quote from this episode "I am used to losing things.". Such a tragedy
Frieren dont like be headpatted but pat heads :D And yes those are wedding bells. i love how the facial expression from frieren with every episode slowly change
I love the way they show the ups and downs and ins and outs of relationships. Sometimes, there's conflict, even if you both love each other. Learning how to navigate that is how you grow together--there's no magical person with whom you'll never have any sort of disagreement. But, even while showing that, they don't resort to making either character look especially childish. We can see and understand the root of the conflict so you can't just pin it all on one character being a jerk. It's just so refreshing to see.
The thing about these 2 is that with every piece of information or detail we get on their relationship (especially with the manga) it get sadder and sweeter at the same gdamn time. It's like swallowing a spoonful of sugar except there's glass pieces mix in there too
Sometimes I think what I look forward the most to seeing reactions is the Himmel with the ring scene, and Frieren blowing a kiss. Oh and the mimics, I can't forget the mimics.
15:05 Well this is a good sign, assuming it is the same sub. Initially this sub was infamous for mistranslating the "monster hunting mission" as "defeating the demon lord," making it seem like this flashback happened near the end of Frieren's journey with Himmel. I guess they fixed it recently.
2 things you probably miss or don't realize 1. when himmel bend over to frieren there's a cloc tower in the middle of them potray that the only thing between himmel and frieren's love is time 2. is the difference between mirrored lotus stark give to fern and himmel give to frieren is. the flower has already bloom on the bracelet while the one on the ring is not bloomed
One thing that doesn't seem to get much credit is the amazing music and sound design. The music when he gets on one knee is just the icing on the cake!
Frieren, watching Himmel go down on one knee: "I wonder why he's being so dramatic over a little ring?" Frieren, waking up in the middle of the night 1,000 years later: "Oh shit. I just realized - did he LIKE me?!"
himmel is like Jiraya from naruto ""I love a woman... but I won't force her to love me! I will surround her with my love while I pray and wish for her happiness."
Didn’t cry but I was touched. I kinda half-expected it, I guess, pulling a Beren and Luthien, the image of the falling winged creature, patting on the head, and all. The Japanese for “eternal love” is not 永遠の愛 but 久遠の愛 so it looks not so much like love for all time as like love of the far, far off. Distant in understanding and beyond ones remaining life in either case, and the likes of me coming months late to it all too . . .
18:52 coz when i watched it i can't really like relate altho i understand what it implies but then again i can't relate so there's nothing much of a reaction to me

Finally someone mention this. Most people don't pay that much attention
I never noticed the shadows, thanks for making me appreciate the show even more!
In the Manga its extra sad cause the clock is placed over just Himmel specifically as he kneels.
So if you go back and watch the Qual fight, the demon who's been sealed for eighty years is surprised by Frieren flying.
After all the times I've seen this episode, that never clicked for me.
As a manga reader (and therefore one who loves hinting at shiz) - the flight spell is definitely 100% something frieren couldn't do when adventuring with Himmel and co. It's a trait that sticks out to those who know her.
We also get a pov shot of Qual looking left and right, and then looking up when he doesn't see her
@@tenou213 But then why does Lügner at the end of episode 8 have a flashback where he remembers Frieren floating in front of him?

Right. She always loved him but wasn't fully cognizant. It's so tragic her clarity arrived 80 years too late
for an elf, it's normally ok to postpone important decision and take some time to process emotions. Unfortunately this is not the case when a human is involved in those decision/emotions.
hIMmel is him, my god he's smooth , such tragic love story , I hope she'll see him in the end and be happy with him forever
Well hope not. He's dead remember so she will have to die lol.
The more I like Himmel, the less I like Frieren for friendzoning him
Himmel did win the second popularity contest of 100 different characters from the manga.
and he was 2nd place in the third popularity poll just a week or so ago!

Frieren eighty years later: "Damn... Himmel was into me?"

she had shower thoughts a little too late

Now Frieren realized that Himmel had vowed "eternal love" to her.😭

Stark and Fern are going to get married one day on this journey... and then later they'll get divorced, but maybe they'll remarry at some point
When you react to part 2 + 3 the lord of the rings??? Last reaction part 1 was 2 weeks ago
Fern was really unfair at the begining of the chapter. She made a gift to Stark because Frieren told her. Otherwise she would have also forgotten it.
