Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) walked the mile with a variety of cons. He had never encountered someone like John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair of young sisters. Coffey had the size and strength to kill anyone, but not the demeanor. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. Paul began to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of murdering the two girls.

I was a prison guard a few years back, and almost all of the other guards treated the prisoners like they show here. The ones who treated prisoners like Percy does were fired immediately. With a population of over 2000 inmates to about 600 guards, interacting with them and treating them like people went a long way, and even saved my life.
I wish the prison I worked at was this level of ... what's the word I'm looking for ... respectful, I guess. I hated that job. Regs kept the guards running around like errand boy babysitters, and Rank was far too clique-ish.

Yep, I've done detainee ops in both the military and law enforcement. It was in everybody's best interest to treat the detainees with respect to keep them calm. Made no damn sense to rile them up by being an a-hole to them.
I respect that attitude.
Ive read about the Eric Garner case. He was convicted of burglary as a teen in a gang(though he even lost his nerve at the time of the burglary and the incident was initiated by peer pressure and such) he got arrested and marked for life and had to sell bootleg cigarettes for a living. People in the neighborhood he hustled in actually kind of liked the guy. Even the grocery store owners. He was big and burly and that made him kind of like a bouncer on the street. He had a mentality marked by his time in prison but was respectful, polite and decent. He was trying to break up a fight and got accosted by police (who had harassed him in the past for being big, scary, hanging around on the street and his skin color didn't help). He got fed up, cussed them out and started walking away. And that's when they choked him. And then he perished. It's where the "I can't breathe" movement came from. Bottom line is. Prisoners are people. Though I do think there could be more done to ensure prisoners aren't harassing other prisoners or networking into cliques and gangs. You got them all in the same place. You should be able to stop them from acting out.

I cry every time I watch John say ,"Tell God, the father, it was a kindness you done. " I accept that he wanted to go to heaven.
That's like a lot of elderly people when they're on their death bed. Us family members want to do everything we can to keep them here because we love them. But they're tired and ready to enter eternity
“Don’t put me in the dark. I’s afraid of the dark,” is the line that gets me every time. It’s one of the best payoffs from a seemingly throwaway line.

To be fair, he has good reason to be afraid of the dark. The gentle giant is filled with hopeful, healing magic. To put that in darkness snuffs it out. He’s afraid of the dark because he still has hope, even if he’s ready to die for what he is - a gift from his creator.

The ONLY explanation I can see for him not getting his well-deserved awards is racism. That's the only possible explanation, cause he ate this role up, 100%.

Stephen King has been vocally critical of many Hollywood directors including Tarantino, so there could be "F that guy" energy towards his works. The Shawshank Redemption also didn't win any academy awards despite being nominated and deserving, but I'm sure Morgan Freeman being black means it's racism there too, right? Oh wait, Morgan Freeman has 5 oscars? Well, damn, that's gotta screw up the whole "everyone's racist" explanation.
In fact, Kathy Bates is the only recipient of an Oscar for a King movie and her competition was Jeremy Irons for "Reversal of Fortune", Kevin Costner for "Dances with Wolves", Robert De Niro for "Awakenings", Gerard Depardieu for "Cyrano de Bergerac", and Richard Harris for "The Field" which, to be honest made it impossible for them to choose anyone but her since she was so much better than all those performances.
Maybe, just maybe, you're seeing things that aren't there because of your worldview.
@@NativeNewMexican Morgan Freeman has 1 Oscar for best actor in a supporting role for Million Dollar Baby. I agree that it's silly to say the only explanation is racism, but many deserving African American actors were passed over on Oscars for several years.
Kathy Bates's competition were the other actresses up for Best Actress that year, Anjelica Huston, "The Grifters"; Julia Roberts, "Pretty Woman"; Meryl Streep, "Postcards From the Edge"; Joanne Woodward, "Mr.& Mrs. Bridge."

While I agree Michael Caine should not have won best supporting actor for The Cider House Rules it was Haley Joel Osment' s performance in The Sixth Sense that was far and away the best acting performance of that year and one of the best of all time imo.

You have to remember. This was taking place in 1935. Coffey knows the future and I'm sure most people know what was happening at that time and was going to happen very soon.

We have to give thanks to Bruce Willis because he recommended producers of the Green Mile to hire Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey. Big Mike acted along with Bruce in year before The Green Mile releasing in Armageddon. Some of Big Mike's family and friends stated Big Mike was like his Coffey's character as a "gentle giant".
Backstory of Big Mike, he was doing security for celebrities as a bodyguard until Notorious BIG was killed. Then Big Mike quit security after the killing. He went in more for acting roles. Tom Hanks eulogized Big Mike during the funeral.

Actor, who portrays Percy, Doug Hutchison faced major backlash from others when he married then 16 years old model named Courtney Stodden when he was 51 in 2011. They gotten divorced in 2020.

RIP, Michael Clarke Duncan! He was a great actor. Sadly, he was robbed of Oscar!

I'm a big strong black man who sometime/ has often been looked at with fear and suspicion,,. when the truth is I am actually the biggest teddy bear around. This sincerely beautiful woman (inside and out) has officially made my favorite reaction video ever! God bless her. And God bless you all.

One of the genius things about this film (and "Shawshank" to an extent) is that Darabont never tells us why most of the inmates are in prison. He wants us to know them as human beings, not defined by their crimes.

But it takes something, what the writer of the books intended (Green mile, the other book I have not read).
King writes in the green mile the causes of the sentences (and says why some get off the hook and others not)
@@philliplynx7877 I credit Darabont here because King explains exactly what the inmates did in both stories to land them in prison. But Darabont leaves out the crimes of characters like Brooks Hatlen, Arlen Bitterbuck and Eduard Delacroix because ultimately, it doesn't matter what they did because they are no longer the men who committed the crimes that landed them in the slammer. We wouldn't have the same sympathy for Brooks or Arlen or Del if we knew what they had done to end up in prison. The only reminder is that we see the families of the victims of Arlen and Del in their audience, watching their executions. And this makes it even powerful because when Del is brought to Old Sparky, one of the witnesses remarks about the fires of Hell being stoked and Satan's imps are waiting for his soul, but when she witnesses literal fire come out of Del's body and face, she is horrified and can't bear to watch. Even for a woman who was eager to see him die, she knew in that moment he was suffering more than he deserved.
It's open to the viewer's imagination, but then - as now - murder was the only capital crime.
I like that.
This movie broke every person I know who has ever seen it. Whoever didn't cry watching it, isn't human.

A film so well made that it moves me even watching it for the thirtieth time. This story breaks my heart every time I watch it, I could never hold back the tears and nowadays I don't even try.
It's interesting how the film doesn't explain the crimes of the inmates, leaving us, the viewers, only the human beings behind bars. I'm sad with how the story ends, but I wouldn't change anything, because this story is perfect.
Thank you for reminding me of this film, it was great to rewatch it and show it to my wife who is watching it for the first time.
Whenever I see someone watching this movie for the first time, it's never a question of will they cry, but how much will they cry. Wonderful movie, and Michael Clarke Duncan was screwed out of an Oscar win. Everyone is just great in this film. Especially what's his face who plays Percy. He does such a good job in making you absolutely hate him 😂🤣
The Green Mile is such an emotional powerhouse with greats like Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, Gary Sinise, James Cromwell, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, Michael Jeter, Harry Dean Stanton, Sam Rockwell, William Sadler, and so much more extraordinarily talented actors for this classic movie that’s based on a Stephen King novel. I get teary eyed every time i watch this movie and feel that it gets better every time i watch it. Well done Mr. King and my hat’s off to Tom Hanks for another gripping and phenomenal performance that should’ve earned him another Oscar!
Nearly everyone I've watched react to this film cries, and rightly so. It's a beautiful, heart-rending film. All of the actors were superb, especially Michael Clarke Duncan.
The first time I watched this movie was at 3 AM when I was in college and I started crying during Bitterbuck’s monologue and then just kept crying through the entire thing. Obviously, John’s death is heartbreaking and Del’s death is horrendous, but the two scenes that always get me in a beautiful way are Bitterbuck’s monologue and the “I dreamed of you“ monologue by the wife. It’s just so beautiful.
Oh dear........ Honey, I hope you have the tissues ready. The execution scene always breaks everyone. 😢
The best emotional part of this is that it doesn’t matter what these men have done in the end. They all faced their deaths the same as any person would. Scared. All we can hope is on our Green Miles is we have angels like Brutus, Paul and my man John Coffey to give us peace and love before the end.
If you want an underrated Tom Hanks movie where he doesn't play an everyman, watch Road to Perdition. It also stars Paul Newman. This one is a winner!

I watched this movie in the year 2000 with my uncle and my brother we all cried back them and i still cry whenever i watch this movie
This is one of my top 5 favorite films of all time. I never get tired of watching it and love to see people react to this masterpiece.
Fifteen mice were used in the movie. Each spent months being trained to do different tricks. Coffey's bed was built shorter in order to make Michael Clarke Duncan look like a giant.
How'd we do this the first time? - we cried like babies. Each time I see a reaction to this movie - I cry. John's speech about being tired of people being ugly to each other reminds me to give the benefit of the doubt to others.
You know how i can tell that this was probably the best reaction to this that I've ever seen? It's that I was so entranced by Clariss's empathy, insight, humour and intelligence (and the overflowing of humanity, in the heart-felt comments at the end) that I totally forgot there's a tiny repeated segment that got skipped in the editing, til I saw it again in my second pass through (immediately after the first one...hey it was that good I had to watch it again) and had to just stop and comment. Congrats on the top-tier reaction, and being the genuine reactor, beautiful woman, and exemplary human being that you clearly are.

I think you will remember this magnificent film for a long time
The line that get me is when Paul says, "If God can make a mouse live so long, how much longer do I have left?" It has to be hard to watch everybody you meet and develop friendships with and then have to watch them die, and to want to be able to die and leave this world but not be able to. Not to be morbid or anything, but I wonder what would happen if Paul tried to take his own life just to be done with it.

Regarding the moon pie scene:
They essentially put a cannon inside the cell and filled it with chocolate goo, and fired it at him.
This was particularly bad for the guy that got spit on, because he's allergic to chocolate.
George Stinney Jr. He was the youngest execution ever. A 14 year old black boy sentenced to the electric chair which influenced this book and movie. Humans have some very dark places. I hope we have some light inside too. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

Watching this movie should be mandatory. No matter who you are, good, evil, neutral, empathetic, apathetic, young, old, sane, unstable, etc. This movie makes you have a perspective in life. It brings like you said, and like a lot of people including me say after watching this movie every single time, it brings you an appreciation for life, as well as the appreciation for death. It makes you feel as though no matter how bad life gets, no matter how hard it is. You should enjoy life, despite all of it. Enjoy the little things. Enjoy any amount of good in your life and dont take it for granted. Dont give up, dont make excuses. Go for your dreams and go for a better world and life than what you live, especially if youre someone like me who grew up with very little. At an early age i didnt understand everything in this movie, but i cried, and i loved it. Ive watched this movie at least once a year since i was 12. Im almost 21 now and i still hold this movie as possibly the only perfect film in existence. Its raw, it pulls no punches, and it feels so real, even with the "unrealistic" elements. I stand saying no matter who you are, if you watch this movie, and you dont cry, youre not human. I recently showed this movie to my little sister, whos 12 now. Since i saw it at her age i thought she should too. She wasnt paying attention all throughout, but she cried, several times. I regard her as being spoiled and a bit heartless at times, but even she knows how good this movie is, and she has the empathy for animals and humans to cry. This movie can really prove who is and isnt a psychopath potentially. But thats just a rambling. All in all if youve made it this far, i hope you have a delightful day, a wonderful week, a marvelous month, and an outstanding year. Because be it you be evil or not. You still deserve to be happy, and a chance to repent for your sins. We all have them. And we will all face judgement. Until then, love life, love people, and be happy with what you have, because theres always someone out there that has it worse, that has less, and that thinks they have it the worst. But even for them, theres someone thats got it worse and worse and worse. So appreciate the little things. Smile. Laugh. Have fun. Bless everyone who made it this far, and those with good hearts.

As an electrical/electronic technician, I work with electricity every day on my job with voltages and currents some very dangerous. I take precautions as I work on assemblies to keep myself and others safe. Some think that voltages kill, but it is not voltages that kills, it is the amperage (currents) that kills. That electric chain receives 2,000 volts of electricity as it electrocutes person. Person receives the current going thru their body, causing brain damage and death. Either way, Percy wanted revenge on Del after Del laughing at Percy for pissing himself. There were actual incidents with electric chains that led to more humane executions such as Lethal Injections. But Florida still has its "Old Sparky" chair in Starke State Prison.
***Interesting note that I learn from one of my electronics instructors stated 1/10th of an amp can stop your heart (remember that heart rhythmic functions with electric impulses).
I believe it's closer to 6-10 mA, or 1/1000 of an amp across the heart will do it. And people should remember that while it is the current that is fatal, it's the voltage that induces the current. So voltage does kill in so far as it creates the current. Nobody is going to die from touching a car battery with dry hands with only 12 Volts, despite being able to deliver 600 Amps or more.
I have seen the black and white movie over a hundred times in my life, but after seeing it in this movie, it has a different feeling to it. I feel for John Coffee even though he is a fictional character. Another time Michael Clark Duncan got me was at an awards show when he and John Lemmon were both up for an award, and I want to say it was the lifetime achievement award. Michael got the award but told everyone they made a mistake and told John Lemmon to come up and accept the award from him. A true gentleman and an honor to his craft. Every bit the embodiment of John Coffee. Rip Michael Duncan.

Great reation! I was 24 when this came out and me and some friends went see it at the cinema. My god, we were crying our eyes out. No one told us to bring a roll of toilet paper. This is one of the best movies ever made.

This has to be the most heartfelt reaction I've seen to this film. Just wanted to hold your hand and give you a hug hon. Such a fine adaptation of King's work (he's even said it was on of his faves). Stellar cast & excellent direction/screenplay by Darabont (who did SHAWSHANK & THE MIST).

An explanation for the dry sponge: since there's no water, the electricity is then dispersed all over the body, and the result is hes being cooked to death.

I very rarely cry at films and TV but tonight your reaction had me tearing up. I've always been very glad to see Percy get what was coming to him. As for your emotional message, I was unemployed during that time and I was relying on prayers alone (and my dog and cat) to survive while my family watched me breakdown. What a movie! It draws you right into it. I tell myself this is "just a movie." but, despite that, I cannot stop myself from having an emotional reaction to it. You're right, it does leave you feeling pained, but appreciative. In fact, I would have to say that this is not only a movie. It is an experience.

I didn't know I needed a good cry today, but here i am Sobbing with you over a movie I have seen many times and cried every time.
I read the book first thankfully and all the way through I was waiting for something to get John off the charges. The one thing the movie left out was that when each "ending" would happen the inmate would have a priest to say their final words to, when it got to John he asked Paul to do it and that was it! I lost it and sat there bawling like a baby for ten minutes. An amazing novel turned into an incredible movie with an fantastic cast. Thank you for sharing.

This is a beautiful movie. Every character has nuance. Every story beat has layers. The victories are tempered with melancholy and sorrow buoyed by hope. It's about as close to perfect as any film has come.
My daughter walked by while I was watching your reaction at the point if John's execution and asked if you were okay. I said, "no, she is watching The Green Mile for the first time. No one is okay for that."
Your daughter must be a wholesome young woman like you ❤ to have empathy for a person on a screen. Its people like those in the comments and that show emotion through a movie like this that bring humanity a step closer to hope for all mankind ❤

Don’t worry, I’m a sobbing mess, too! I related so hard to what you said about everyone (or most of us) having a “line” for the most vile acts that we feel hatred for the person who did the deed. There’s so much evil in the world…there’s also beauty, but damn if I don’t feel like John Coffey, sometimes. “I’m tired, boss…” Your speech at the end had me crying again. You have such a big heart. I just finished watching your reaction to the movie and man was I emotional as well. But the one thing that really got to me was how you ended your video. But usually after someone gets done, crying and sobbing, they take so much time just to gather themselves, And I respect that from the people that I have watched. But you have definitely shown yourself to be honest and loving and caring for all of your subscribers. You don’t know this about me, but I’m a blind person, and the one thing that I love is watching movie reactions and commentary from some of my favorite reactors, and you are definitely one of them. I just want you to know that you have really inspired me to want to be an actor, especially the kind of actors I can make a difference and can showcase the fact that blind people can act that it is possible to open doors to a wonderful career. Cffey felt the electricity from dale because he was holding the mouse that dale loved ""kol them with they love" he feela the love and hate in the world because he was a chosen one. Real angel
If you notice right before the execution, John Coffey says “I’m sorry for what I am”, opposed to the others who said “I’m sorry for what I’ve done”. He was truly a beautiful person that was killed for his kindness.

I only recently realized how I will always watch reactions to this movie, and Forrest Gump. And how both of those movies star Tom Hanks. The reactions never fail to leave me emotional and I love seeing people react to absolute masterpieces like this.
After Paul went to boys correctional he became a teacher, and did it for a few years until he was drafted for WW2, he would lose many friends and comrades until becoming a captain. He would then miraculously survive a seemingly impossible mission to rescue a private, by the name of James Francis Ryan from within enemy lines...but that's another tale...

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention but that I believe to be plausible is that Delacroix isn't stupid and understands that Mouseville is just a tale that they tell him, but he chooses to believe in it, or at least play along and pretend to believe, since it's at least some kind of comfort and he's willing to grasp at any straw that's offered to him in that situation. It doesn't really matter, but I think it's a nice bit of subtlety.
The Green Mile is one of my favorite movies of all time and seeing your reaction made me feel like the first time I saw it. I accompany you in that great pain of watching this film, truly a masterpiece of cinema.

This is easily one of the five best movies ever made. It is a true masterpeice. Specially how they tie everything up at the end it makes sence. If you see this film and don´t feel anything you don´t have a heart
Such an amazing movie. It really makes you think about life and how much we take for granted. I watch this movie whenever I need a good cry. Sometimes I can just watch a reactor watch it and I still sob.

Hi Clariss! I know you're an actress and all, but we can see that this movie really got into you! I kmow I felt the same way, and cried the same way when I first watched it many years ago... I couldn't stop crying, not only for John Coffe, but like he said, for how ugly people are to each other every day, everywhere. And what can we say about Michael Clarke Duncan? I have no words for him... Everything in this movie is amazing!
