    I FINALLY watch Stephen King's THE GREEN MILE (1999) for the FIRST TIME! 🌟
    Movie Summary:
    Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) walked the mile with a variety of cons. He had never encountered someone like John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair of young sisters. Coffey had the size and strength to kill anyone, but not the demeanor. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. Paul began to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of murdering the two girls.

I lost my dad to cancer, so the scene where John heals Melinda broke me too. But I truly understand how John felt when he said he was tired of folks being ugly to each other... the last decade or so has brought out so many people who are like that.

      @LittleBlueOwl318 8 дней назад

      He was comforting the guards instead of the other way around. When Paul says "May God have mercy on your soul", he was thinking "May God have mercy on MY soul."
      It gets me when John sings "I'm in Heaven" in the chair and when Paul's voice cracks when he says "Roll on 2".
      Paul was 44 the year John Coffey walked the Green Mile (1935) which means he was born in 1891. So, in '99 Paul was 108 and Mr Jingles was 64 or 65 years old. A pet mouse in captivity has an average life expectancy of about 4-5 years... makes you wonder how long Paul will live, eh?! Several hundred years probably. And his penance is to lose everyone he loves, to outlive them all.
      I love that Melinda gave him that medallion after John healed her. - St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection to travelers and against sudden death, many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a sheperd's staff in one hand.
      Fits John Coffey.

    It's a shame we didn't get much time with Michael Clarke Duncan; he was a tremendously-talented actor with a broad range. He also voiced the chief of the prison in 'Kung Fu Panda.'
    And yes, David Morse ('Brutal') is a very tall man, measuring around 6'7". He was actually taller than Michael Clarke Duncan (6'5"), but they used clever filming techniques to make John Coffee a giant.

    Fantastic reaction to this masterpiece!
    Percy's connections could easily have his target and their family starving to death in that era. This is set during the Great Depression when many thousands of Americans couldn't find work(probably why he didn't mind older dry toast). Many were living on the streets because they couldn't afford a home. Others had a home but no heating or electricity. That's what he meant by "You'll be on the bread-lines before the week is out." he was threatening his job, which could put him in some serious trouble with no jobs available and standing in charity lines for a piece of bread so stave off starvation. VERY hard to find another job. Men lined up just to get a job for the day as laborers.
    That's also part of why John Coffey refused help. When asked if he wanted them to let him run away he responded with "why would you do such a foolish thing?" He knew what the outcome would be. They would be fired at the very least. At worst they would be jailed and their families would end up homeless and starving too. The larger part was, as he said, he wanted to go. The world was too much for his kind soul.
    The limit to his power is that he can't resurrect the dead. The mouse wasn't dead yet, so he could heal it. The lady with the tumor also was still alive so he could heal her. The girls were already dead, so he couldn't help them.

    Lol - "you like what you like" - it is also true that, when you get quite a bit older (like this character), your stomach doesn't always like what you like and you choose your meals carefully 🤣🤣
    (btw - Duncan apparently died of a heart attack - and the first movie I remember seeing him in was Armageddon - which I love because it's just plain fun to watch - also, there is a quote from Tom Hanks when Duncan died calling him a "treasure" and saying that he was "magic" - those are some pretty powerful words to use about someone...sounds like he was an amazing person... RIP Michael Clarke Duncan)

    Mannnn....one of the things that ALWAYS breaks me, among many other things in this movie, is when the guards are walking to go get John Coffey from his cell right before he walks the mile, is when John tells them as they are visibly shaken "It'll be alright fellas, this here's the hard part". He knows he's about to be electrocuted til his death and HE is the one comforting them. Then he continues on about his dream about Mr. Jingles and Mouseville.. ugghh such pure innocence.

      What gets me is when Paul's voice cracks when he says "Roll on 2"... I sob uncontrollably every time.
      And I love that Melinda gave him that medallion after John healed her.

    When Paul said may god have mercy on your soul. I honestly believe he was sayin it himself. Like the gravity of what’s about to happen is front and center he’s hoping for mercy. But Paul got the worst punishment. To see your loved ones die like all of them and nothing you can do. Pure torture

    • @LittleBlueOwl318
      @LittleBlueOwl318 8 дней назад

      Yes, I felt like Paul was actually thinking "May God have mercy on MY soul" while saying the words.
      And we also have a guy named Paul telling a story about a miracle man with the initials J.C. - who is an empath, a seer & has a gift for healing and then dies for someone else's sin after blessing people with LIFE...
      sounds familiar.

    This is indeed, without question, my all time favorite movie... I guess you can say it was fate that I grabbed it off the video store shelf that day, because I was looking for a movie and the cover and title made me think it was interesting, plus I liked Shawshank Redemption, so I gave it a try. Only one other movie made me shed tears (Mask- Rocky Dennis) but not to the extent that this one did. I cried in this movie as if I lost my entire family all at the same time. Never was the guy to think I would cry in front of my children, but the emotions pulled rank and it was Niagara Falls City for me. Great movie here and so many subliminal maxims within. Hooray to the entire cast and crew. John Coffey/ initials J. C./ Jesus Christ... One love

    This is probably in the top 10 of my favorite films. If that sounds too low, bear in mind that I am a lifelong movie buff of more than 60 years and have seen innumerable great films going back to the silent era. A number of actors have been cheated out of an Oscar, but Duncan’s loss of the Oscar for this performance is an incomparable disgrace to the Academy.
    Very sorry for the loss of your mother. I too lost my mother to a brain tumor. The worst of it was that she was phenomenally healthy her whole life, and we thought she would live to be 100. Instead, she died at 70, 27 years ago.

    If memory serves I believe Mr. Duncan died from congestive heart failure. I know he was in the hospital having just undergone heart surgery and was expected to make a complete recovery then took a turn for the worst. It was the saddest thing I ever read. I believe Tom Hanks delivered one of the eulogies for his funeral. It was Bruce Willis who called Hanks to tell him he had 'John Coffee' for him for this movie. Willis got to know Mr. Duncan when they worked together in the movie 'Pulp Fiction'.
