18:45 You probably wouldn't want to get fired in that era, actually. This is set during the Great Depression. Thousands upon thousands lost everything when the stock market crashed. whole families were living on the streets or in tents in the center of cities. people were starving to death. Freezing to death during the winter because they couldn't afford heating. Men were lining up at factories and the like for hard labor jobs hoping to be picked for the day to work and most places to work couldn't afford to hire more than a few of them per day. Him getting fired could get him and his whole family homeless overnight. It's the same reason John didn't want them to let him go. Apart from the fact that he was tired of this life and all the pain he felt in the world, if they had let him go they would be fired at the very least, jailed at the worst. Either way their families would suffer horribly. John knew that and so did they.

They used camera effects and props so it would appear Duncan was much taller than everyone else around him. That's one of the reasons you don't really see a wide shot when the actors are together in a scene. In fact, David Morse (Brutal) and Duncan were roughly the same height. The illusion worked perfectly.

  • @KD-xb5np

I LOVE the novel - it's a serial novel in 6 parts that were released once a month over 6 months. That's why the movie is kind of "spread out," I guess. Part 1 is called "Two Dead Girls," part 2 is "The Mouse on the Mile," part 3 is "Coffey's Hands," part 4 is "The Bad Death of Eduard Delacroix," part 5 is "Night Journey," and part 6 is "Coffey on the Mile."
The novel makes it VERY, VERY clear how racist this society was in general and how that affected not only Coffey but other people convicted of murder, too. It says straight up that most of the prisoners Paul was in charge of were black and that people of color (Bitterbuck, Coffey) and "foreigners" (Del) who were convicted of murder were much more likely to get sentenced to death compared to white people convicted of murder. Even Wild Bill had more opportunities to appeal compared to the other death row prisoners. I have no idea why some viewers think race/racism wasn't a major theme in the movie; it would've been stupid to make a movie set in this time and place and pretend racism and xenophobia didn't have a big impact on the story.
Stephen King tells the reader at the end of part 1 that Coffey's execution was the last one Paul took part in, and he makes it clear that no one on death row was ever saved at the very last minute, so the reader knows early on that Coffey will be killed. I think that works really well in the novel; the reader isn't reading the last part thinking Coffey might be saved at the last minute, they're just depressed and resigned to the fact that Coffey never stood a chance in Alabama in 1935 despite everything he did to save others. As Paul narrates the execution, he states when and how each person there died, which is depressing (for example, Dean was stabbed in the neck and killed by a prisoner just 3 months later). And the last chapter starts with the heartbreaking story of how Paul's wife died in a major bus crash that killed every passenger except for two, one of whom was Paul. Paul wasn't even seriously injured, but he had to watch his wife die an absolutely horrific death. It really brings home how this "gift" of life he's been given is really a curse.
I like that in the movie the viewer doesn't know what will happen to Coffey, though. That works better for this format, I think.

Michael Clarke was 6’5” and they used camera tricks to make him look even taller.
It’s always interesting to see, in the arrest scene, which reactors take note that we never actually *_see_* what happened, and raise the possibility of some freak accident, or even of John Coffee not having done it at all.
    - I am not entirely sure what to make of the fact that those who come down hardest on Coffey initially… have all been Black men,

In the books the nurse at the retirement home was evil like Percy. Not nice like in the movie but there wasn't enough time to flush out that story with as long as the run time was so they simplified it.
The book laughs about how today you take 2 pills and are fine but back then you had to just piss out an infection.
The rehearsal stand in is Tut Tut. in the books he runs the snack cart that comes through the green mile. If i remember that is where they get the stuff for the mouse's home.
Wetting the sponge directs the electricity down to the brain. If it is dry it will try to spread through the body meaning long painful death.

  • @bwilliams463

The book included a character who was an abusive orderly at the nursing home who gave Paul trouble every chance he got - a modern-day equivalent of Percy Wetmore. I think they were right to leave it out of the movie; keeping us in the past through the majority of the movie keeps the story centered.
And if the repentance is sincere, I was taught that you will be forgiven in the next life. In the book, when Paul talks with Arlen Bitterbuck before the execution, Paul tells the READER that he doesn't believe that a murderer can be redeemed, ever, but he doesn't let on to Bitterbuck that he feels that way.Once again, from the book: Arlen Bitterbuck killed a man in a fight over a pair of boots. Edouard Delecroix raped a girl and killed her in an alley. In an attempt to cover it up, he set fire to the body and managed to burn down a boarding house, killing three more.

If you can't piss at all then that's a medical emergency, and you should go to the ER, and yell at them until they give you a catheter and a bag.

I don't know if I necessarily believe in divine forgiveness, but the human heart is changeable. There are killers who come to recognize the evil that they've done, and who truly and deeply regret the suffering they've caused, and there are killers who will go to their graves without the slightest hint of remorse. If there IS such a thing as true spiritual redemption, that's something no living person can know, and no dead person can tell.

I miss Michael Clarke Duncan. He was such a kind soul and an amazing actor. Also, God will forgive murderers as long as you truly are remorseful for your actions, change your ways and truly want His forgiveness. He died for our sins and if we ask for forgiveness, He will forgive but he knows if you are truly sorry for your sin. We are all sinners and we will all be judged when our time is up.

New sub, Brilliant film, emotional, heart ripping, yet beautiful. Its a rough one. A true angel with the most adorable smile. Being a hippie/pacifist I dont like the de@th penalty. Im cool with Oubliettes. Dungeons, a hole to put someone to forget about them. Bread and water, solitude, thinking about nothing but what they did til they pass. Besides for those deserving of such, de@th is the easiest way out for them. Wow, guess that sounded kinda mean but its how I feel about it, lol. In to the next. Thanx so much, Peace

From what I believe in god, yes he does forgive murderes. That’s why he sent his only son to die for the sins for humanity so that they can come to god and receive eternal salvation.

@@DevinGtv901 Earthly consequences? Go by the law unless the law goes against God. Capital punishment can be said to go against God's law, so there is an argument there for sure to be against the death penalty. Heavenly consequences? There are none. Once saved, your are wiped clean of all sins. (my view).

Attn, DevinG Tv, Yes, God forgives murderers friend, if they are truly sorry and repent - turn from there evil ways, also Gods Word says if you even hate someone that too is murder, We cannot keep all Gods commandments we can only try our best, that is why God sent Jesus to die in our place on that Cross to take our punishment so if we believe in Jesus's works we will live forever in Heaven, This is the most important subject in our world friend, Seek and learn of Jesus please,
