Bro, letting John Coffey live would've gone against his wishes. He said it's like tiny pieces of glass in his head. Why prolong his suffering if he expresses clearly that he's tired of it?

@@Treyreacts11 hard choice to make. Almost impossible because both options can be seen as good and bad. Kill him, and you're following his wishes and ending the suffering, but you're also depriving the world of an honest to God healer that can cure things like a brain tumor and nearly dead mice to full health. Spare him, and you're keeping that healer around to help the world, but you're also ensuring he suffers constantly while he's alive. 😅

@@Treyreacts11 Oh, me neither, and my first reaction to the movie was the same as yours, I was yelling at the screen, "No, no, take him out of there, hide him, SAVE HIM! You can't kill him!!" I get it years later that the poor man was tired of his sad life and the fact that he was so naïve and that he couldn't stop saving people and taking on their pain, but imagine how hard that would be to live like that? And all of the anger and hate towards him, the bigotry and misunderstanding he'd have lived with. And they'd have had to go on the run, hiding him. And he's pretty big to hide. But yes, I was angry and sobbing. And when he said, "Please don't put that thing over my head, I's afraid of the dark." I was full on sobbing, tears streaming and ANGRY! I still sob, every time. I cried over the French man, I can't remember his name, with the little mouse, when it was his turn too. He was reformed from whatever he'd one. It was so unfair. If anyone deserved to be in that jail and chair it was Percy and the girls' real killer played by Sam Rockwell.
Plus, what could they do? Who would believe them?
After seeing Michael Clarke Duncan play John Coffey, you can't imagine anyone else playing the role but him! He was masterful! RIP Mr. Duncan!
The actors playing villains in this movie were actually playing their roles very convincingly too. Yet they are just actors.

Michael Clark Duncan, rest in peace, was 6 feet 5 inches tall in real life. They used movie magic to make him look bigger.

The warden is actually 2 inches taller in real life.
John actually wasn't meant to be portrayed as dumb or slow, but rather to have a childlike innocence. The movie and book was inspired by the real story of George Stinney, the youngest person to ever be put on the electric chair, only at 14 years old. He was so small, that they had to stack books for him to sit on, because his head couldn't reach the equipment. He was accused, jailed and executed all in the same year, and it was only after he died, that people realized that many of his rights had been violated, including a coerced confession (imagine a 14 year old boy being alone without his parents in a room with men hell bent on placing the blame on him), and he was fully exonerated 70 years after his passing. The trial itself only took 2 hours and the jury only deliberated for 10 minutes before condemning him. His own lawyer barely defended him, only calling a few witnesses and didn't even try for an appeal.
That's a very sad part of history that needs to be remembered!
The movie was inspired by the book from Stephen King but the book may have been inspired by that young man you spoke of but only Stephen King can say if it was .
It's more To Kill a Mockingbird than this, but maybe that's where Harper Lee got it. Seems like the same era?🤷
One of the most beautiful movies ever made-both visually and with the story. Just a masterpiece.
In the 1930s, modern antibiotics weren’t even an option. He was trying to avoid having to take sulfa tablets, because they make him feel sick.
If they let John live, someone else would have done his execution. Their words, with no evidence, wouldn't have been enough. Then, someone else, not people that care about him, would've been his executioner. They would've hated him,not knowing the truth, and John would've felt that at his execution. John wanted this and having people who loved him and knew his innocence around him at the end was the best they could've given him, seeing as how he didn't want to be let go.
John was absorbing Dail's pain during his execution. That is why he was shaking and the mouse ran away. It was also why he was so tired afterwards . Also, he is not stupid, dumb or slow. They have him acting that way to make him appear innocent, pure.... childlike.
He's 100% slow.

Stephen King wrote it and it's so close to the book. I cried so hard when I read it twice and then watched it three times and again now. I guess they couldn't have found a good way to keep from executing him. How would they convince everyone? And every time John cured someone, it took a piece of him. There were too many racists who would never have believed he didn't do it even if they saw the person who DID kill them while he was committing the damned crime! He was saying,
"It was too late, I tried to take it back, but it was too late." He meant he was trying to take their hurt and pain, but it was too late, he couldn't fix the little girls. The man who played John, Michael Clarke Duncan, died. That is so sad to know.
is 6'5 and normally 270; but the director HD him bulk up to 340-ish for the role. Good editing, camera angles and trenches for actors and a box to stand on give the Coffey character the appearance of being well over 7' tall. And no; he's not on the Juice. He's a lifter and is huge, or was. He passed since this movie. John also wants to die, as he explained. Nobody to confess anyway since Wild Bill is dead. John has reached his limit, just oo much pain, and he very well could have been alive and wandering for hundreds of years as the book apparently hints at from other commentators. All of the guards are crying when they throw the switch; they know its wrong but Coffey wanted it.

I think Percy is one of the most vile and hated characters ever created.
Yes John was innocent, but in the 1930's there was no DNA testing to prove his innocence. John does say he is tired.
This is one of my favorite movies, and when they carry out the death sentence for John, it gets me every time.
Percy and "Commodus" from the movie Gladiator most hated characters ever in my book. The warden in Shawshank gets honorable mention.
No antibiotics readily available to the general public in 1935. Paul had a urinary infection before; his doc gave him sulpher tablets, which only made his piss smell horrible and did nothing for the actual infection. I so very happy you stayed with this reaction, Trey! Despite your reluctance to sit through a 3-hour movie, I think you started to believe it would be worth the trip. As a reaction viewer, I must say you did an excellent job in spite of your trepidation of such a long film and the occasional mind-bending events portrayed. Great job! To me, the most poignant line in "TGM" is John's "I'm sorry for what I am." Remember what Del said: "I'm sorry for what I do." BIG difference between "am" and "do." As a mental exercise, Trey, how would you have appealed John's death sentence once you knew of his powers? Who would believe it? Remember, this is 1935 Jim Crow Louisiana.

There's no other emotion that makes you feel your heart and your soul. Afterwards, you take a deep breath and find yourself at peace with the world.
Indeed, Louisiana was Democrat run, and just like today they passed all kinds of racist laws while trying to accuse everyone else. No way things would turn out well. 😢
Difference is today they claim they are doing it for people's own good, while looking down on them and hurting the community under the guise of "help".
John asked them to do it. That's what their conversation was all about in the cell. He was so damn old that he had outlived everyone he ever knew or loved. And he was in terrible anguish. Paul would've done anything John asked and offered to release him, but John said, "Why would you do such a foolish thing?" For John, his death was a mercy. He was too pure and good to live in a world as terrible as ours. The fact he couldn't save the little girls was the final straw for him. He just couldn't deal with it anymore.
In 1935 there was no effective treatment for a UTI . Penicillin did not come into general use for a couple or so more years .
Michael Clarke Duncan was 6’5” the same size as David Morse (Brutal) but by using risers and camera angles it made him appear bigger.
He was probably wearing Herman Munster shoes. 6 inch thick soles . Suddenly , he is about 7 feet tall.

They let John die because 1: There was no way to save him. They had no proof and no one would have believed it anyway. Even if they'd seen the miracles firsthand, they wouldn't have known that he was innocent for sure.
2: John WANTED to go. He could feel the pain and anguish of everyone he ever met and had likely lived with it for many many years. He was tired of the constant torture of his gift.
So in the end, Paul took his hand one last time to make sure it was what John wanted. He heard John confirm it. So he gave the order.
Trey, try the Shawshank Redemption -- also based on a Stephen King novella and directed by the genius, Frank Darabont. Often on the top of "all time great movie lists."
I think he's meant to be an angel. The prosecutor said it was like he just fell from the sky. He has no past. he said himself he didn't know much of anything. He is innocent like a child but feels everything around him. He has power to heal, and he speaks of God and heaven as if he'd been there. He's not afraid of death. In fact, he knows he'll be in a better place soon. And even though he is going to die, he spends his last day consoling the men who will kill him. He's not afraid of death, only the dark.
I definitely cried on this one first time I saw it many years ago.

48:18 -- MCD got the nomination for this scene, and Tom Hanks helped him out, one actor to another, by giving MCD as good a performance as he gives to the camera, when they're shooting HIS side of it. Sometimes actors won't emote at the top of their game if they're not on camera, but Tom went the extra mile for that scene.

This movie takes place primarily in the 1930s, antibiotics like penicillin weren't widely available until the 1940s. So Paul would probably just have been admitted to a hospital for a while while they let out run its course.

"Get some antibiotics". Well, although penicilline was discovered in 1928, antibiotics was not really an available thing to have around in the 1930s. It was only around 1940 that they were widespread -saving many lives in WW2. But in deep America's 1935, Hank's character was quite FU, medically speaking.
I've seen a lot of reactions to this movie over the years. This commentator is the winner in the categories prejudice and racism.

Well, saying he was trying to bring two dead girls to life because he is a healer wouldn't fly to get him off death row. Forensics wasn't advanced enough in the thirties to clear him either.

He wants to die because he can see and feel all the bad that happens in the world everyday and he’s tired and wants to escape so although he is innocent, he still wants to die to escape the pain in his head and heart

was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill.

10. A little fun fact: Toot Toot the trustee is played by Harry Dean Stanton.(RIP) The other guards' names are Harry Terwilliger/Jeffery DeMunn and Dean Stanton/Barry Pepper.
11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller.
12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder and he brushed it off.

I’ve heard many things of what John was in reactions. I have yet to hear the word I think……. An angel. One line was “it’s like he dropped from the sky”. Foreshadowing or symbolism? Up to the individual. Oh yeah!!! When watching the movie…… didn’t the light from the projector look like aura of a halo?!!!!! Yes, I think so every time I watch.

Michael Clarke Duncan was 6'5". The big white guy "Brutal" was 6'4". They used camera angles and scaled things (and everyone else) down to make him look like a giant.
22:00 remember that antibiotics were not widely available yet. The standard treatment for a UTI was to make the body so toxic with sulfa tablets that the bacteria can't survive. Not plesant and potentially worse than the infection in the long term.

I get that everyone in the comments is "John wanted to die" but this was an addition they made for the movie. The book is far darker at his execution
"John's eyes turned to me. I saw no resignation in them, no hope of heaven, no dawning peace. How I would love to tell you that I did. How I would love to tell myself that. What I saw was fear, misery, incompletion, and incomprehension. They were the eyes of a trapped and terrified animal."
In the book it's stated more clearly Paul did the wrong thing and his age IS undoubtedly his punishment

Big John was just simple we called it someone that was "kinda slow". But it was some healing going on there.
It's not slavery, it's a chain gang, an old idea of reforming prisoners by having them do hard labor and exercise. Others had them run on giant treadmills all day. Slavery ended in 1865, that's 1935, the time of segregation.
I know ! It was a joke! I did say right after , prisons would be empty if they made people do hard Labor like they used to !
@@Treyreacts11 And more. The expansion of what is considered cruel or unusual punishment, or excessive punishment, has sadly stretched too far. Particularly in places that forbid executions. Life with free medical care, food, clothing, housing, etc., is an atrocious thing for those who are truly guilty of the crimes of "Wild Bill" Wharton (Sam Rockwell). Also, their continuing attempts to find more humane methods just keep causing more problems and aren't so much about preventing suffering for the condemned but more an attempt to make it less traumatic to witness.
The late Michael Clarke Duncan who play John Coffey was 6'6" tall. He walked and stood on platforms in the movie to give him extra height.

There were no slaves in 1935. Those were the prisoners. That's why the black and white striped clothes. And the prison system would probably be a lot better these days if the criminals could still be sentenced to hard labor. It would certainly make more of a point than letting them work out in the gym and watch TV all day.

Going to watch your reaction now but don't write off The Godfather. It's a classic and must watch even if it didn't rate high in your poll. The Green Mile is also a great movie. One of the best of Stephen King's novels to become a movie. Hours well spent with both movies.And also high recommend Dances with Wolves. Thank you.

There was only 2 option here for John. 1,. Let John suffer against his will and let him continue living. 2. Let him suffer for a few minutes and than all of his suffering ends and he’s at peace, the second option was John’s will and that’s something people should never go against!

Dale rap'd a woman and trued to cover it uo with a fire. But the fire went wrong, caught an apartment building on fire and unalived like 7 or 8 more people.
If Paul and the other guards had refused to carry out the execution, another group of guards would have been found to take their place. They couldn't have gotten John a new trial; they had no proof that could be believed without being seen. John's nature made it basically impossible for him to testify on his own behalf. And if they had let him escape, he would have been caught and executed, anyway.
John wanted to die, he was tired of the ugly world he lived in and he wanted to be in Heaven at peace so that’s why they had to go through with it as he wanted 😢😢

Read the book cause the book give more details about everyone that was on death row and the prison guards. Now, as early as the 1930, there was nothing to do and being a prison guard on death row a person gets excited about the smallest things cause what else can they do while waiting for someone to fuck up. Tom Banks is my favorite in the movie.
