We have to give thanks to Bruce Willis because he advice the people who created The Green Mile movie to hire Michael Clarke Duncan aka Big Mike for John Coffey. Both Big Mike and Bruce worked together in Armageddon.
When asked if they had anything to say before being executed, the other inmates said that "They were sorry for what they did". When Coffey was asked that, he said, "Sorry for what I am". That is the line that always gets to me.
Yeah, but... It's a see-thru line, written by King. The juxtaposition of a black man's life in the USA "I'm sorry for what I am." is a bit pretentious.
My wife at the time watched this with me and we read the serial before the movie came out. She held on to my arm for at least an hour and cried most of that time. She didn't smile for two days.
Extra shoutout to Barry Pepper who almost always gets forgotten when mentioning the acting in this show. They all give the performance of a lifetime. Just think Barry deserves more credit than he gets.
The 90s really were the golden years in Hanks' absolutely stellar career... Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, and capping it off with Cast Away. Also, being part of a whole generation's childhood as Woody in Toy Story.
Hanks is a top actor of course but his talents are wasted on that run of movies. All are weak melodramatic sauce with bad plots. Not rewatchable except for Toy Story. And voice acting comes second place in animation.

This movie is one of the very few ones out there that makes you cry at some point and it wont stop until the end of the film. This has got to be one of the best movies ever made.
Grave of the Fireflies is another one. It might even be tougher. I want to watch The Green Mile once a year or so. Grave of the Fireflies I've only managed to watch 3-4 times since I first watched it some 25 years ago even though I think both hold the same high quality.

The book was released as a serial in monthly installments in a magazine. Can you imagine having to wait for the next installment? I would've been counting down the days!
I worked at Barnes & Noble when his serial novels for the Green Mile came out. People did rush the stores on the day that the books were released as the release dates were published. Luckily I was able to read them the night before release. Still kills me every time.
Yeah, and Stephen King was barely on schedule. He wrote the afterword in part 6 the day before part 2 was released. Given the time between turning a part in to the editor and publisher and release...yeah, it's a miracle this experiment worked.
Yes, you should definitely read the book. This is one of the very rare instances where the movie did the book justice. Both are equally wonderful. Plus, I love that in 2022 you can get it in one entire volume as the book originally released as a serial.
I bought the green mile as one volume 15 years ago. It's an incredible read n you're right, the movie was amazing n prolly the best book to movie adaptation ever made. It just carried the energy n feeling so well from paper to film
Yeah it's a great book. The movie is the best adaptation of a Stephen King story ever. Aside from a few missing parts, which on their own will rip your heart out. The death of Paul's wife, and the part where they're escorting John to the execution chamber is soooo much harder in the book!!!!

Oh dear, Addie. It's almost impossible to not cry during this movie. An emotional roller coaster for sure. Never attempt to hold back what you feel. Always let the tears flow. There's something about having a good cry. It's a great release. This movie hits beyond the feelings. Especially what happens in the world today, a line from the movie rings so true. John Coffey said, "Mostly, I'm tired of people being ugly to each other. I'm tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world every day. There's too much of it, it's like pieces of glass in my head all the time." We've seen that firsthand too many times. I know that December has already begun and you are likely to already have the month planned out. But if you care for a movie suggestion for the Holidays, may I please recommend the following KLAUS or THE POLAR EXPRESS or IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE Will there be any tears? Frank Darabont just really knew how to adapt Stephen King’s works. These movies are also a great way to show people that King isn’t just a horror writer
The story of a wandering man with the gift of healing & the ability to feel the pain of others and with the initials "J.C." Stephen King is a lot of things but he aint subtle.
The man dancing in a tuxedo in the old movie is Fred Astaire. He and Ginger Rogers made many movies like this involving dancing (I haven't seen them). I saw an old film of a game show from the 50s and he was the guest that week. A panel of people who were blindfolded asked him "yes or no" questions to try to guess his identity. He was super humble. One of the questions he received was "Are you a singer?" and he said "No." Later, when his identity was revealed the woman who had asked him that question said, "Why did you say that you aren't a singer? You're one of the greatest singers in the world." His answer was, "I just don't think so." A really modest, humble guy.
Any one who doesn't cry when watching the Green Mile is heartless, I have it on DVD and cry each time I watch it & shed a tear again watching your reaction 😥
I always liked Michael Clarke Duncan, A lot of actors go on TV to promote things but he had worked in the real world and seemed genuinely happy to be where ever he was. He was approached about joining a gang when he was young and he told them he was more afraid of his Mom than them...
Considering that a mouse's normal lifespan is 1 human year, and Mr. Jingles has lived for at least 60 times that long, we can estimate that Paul's punishment will last for at least *5 THOUSAND* years.
Interesting fact about the actor who played Percy. The 51 year old actor was teaching an acting class and had a 16 year old student in that class that he married. Seems he wasnt just a creep in the movie.
If Paul is 108, that make Mr Jingles 64 or 65 years old. The normal lifespan for a brown mouse is 12-18 months. That means Paul is going to be around for a very long time.
Phenomenal reaction, Addie. Of all of the tear-jerking movies that you've reacted to, this one is at the top. I just watched the movie recently, after watching The Shawshank Redemption (1994), alongside your full-length reactions to both movies on Patreon. I totally agree with you, it was a heartbreaking story. However, I was feeling disappointed at myself for not being able to cry during the movie, which I don't know why. In fact, when I was very young, I used to cry during the "Hallelujah" scene in Shrek (2001), given how sad that scene was and when my girlfriend & I saw I Still Believe (2020) in IMAX, I was almost close to crying near the end. This explains how I have evolved over time. Hopefully, I'll watch another movie that can succeed at making me cry as an adult. Only time will tell.
Speaking of Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP), I suggest Armageddon (1998, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Michael Bay), The Scorpion King (2002, But watch The Mummy Returns (2001) first. WARNING!: There are THREE SNAKE scenes in this one), and The Island (2005, also directed by Bay, WARNING!: There is a brief SNAKE scene in this one). With David Morse, I suggest The Rock (1996, another Bay/Bruckheimer movie), Bait (2000), Proof of Life (2000, with Russell Crowe & Meg Ryan), 16 Blocks (2006), & World War Z (2013, UNRATED).
What a fantastic reaction to such a wonderful film. Del's execution is one of the most horrific scenes in all cinema, and Del's relationship with Mr Jingles is surely one of the most touching. The book is definitely worth a read and King has said that this film adaptation is his favourite ... which is saying something when you think of movies like Shawshank Redemption, Misery, The Shining etc etc.
Wonderful reaction, dear. Great yarn, brilliant direction, sterling cast - how could anyone not be moved? Even Mr Jangles gave a career-best performance. And on top of the accolades for King, Hanks and Frank Darabont's inspired adaptation, let's not forget the bad guys who did so well with the thankless task of making us hate them, Sam Rockwell (Wild Bill) and Doug Hutchison (Percy). After reading comments, I wanted to tip my hat to Doug Hutchison. It takes a good actor to play a character like heartless, evil, weak, callow Percy. Of course, Sam Rockwell as Wild Bill, too.
Back during the depression of the 1930s there were several transient workers like Wild Bill. They could not get a regular job, so they wandered the country, doing odd jobs for people for their supper.
This is another one of those masterpiece must watch movies that should be on everyone's list. Both "The Shawshank Redemption" & "The Green Mile" - Frank Darabont (Director & Screenwriter) & Stephen King (Author of Source Story).
Before this book come out, King had been called eventually a one trick pony. And he said "bet". And then he released several non-horror, incredible books. If you want to read a really great King book that isn't horror, read "11/22/63"

There are several great, biblical, references besides John being Jesus, that I really love. Like Paul, being forced to live for so long, as his punishment for killing him. He is a, great, analogy for Longinus, the Roman soldier that pierced Jesus' side with a spear, and was cursed to walk the earth for eternity as his punishment.

The Writer/Director Frank Darabont often gets overlooked because this was based off of Steven King's original work, but Frank has a lot to do with these movies being so emotional. He also wrote/directed two more Steven King stories in The Shawshank Redemption and THE MIST (2007). Both emotionally charged. Steven King even praised Frank's work with THE MIST, saying Frank's movie ending was better than Steven's own ending in his book. If you haven't seen THE MIST yet, add it to the list.
I love how Stephen King has written stories in every type of genre there is - horror, supernatural, suspense, crime, science-fiction, drama, romance, true story, fantasy and who knows how many more. it is implied in the original book that john could be about 500-600 years old and that paul could live to be at least 200-300+.
John means Beloved and cofe", sounding like but not the same meaning a different meaning, Cough (y) meaning the state of many times coughing(out death, pain and evil) The beloved who sucked in pain suffering evil and death and then coughed it out for to deliver others.
dont know if you will read this, but the lady in the sky when they went to "help the lady", is from another of stephen king's books, "the stand" and he is seeing mother abigaile. stephen king's books link together at some point and its cool if you can see the link in the movies(sometimes places,sometimes people).

Brilliant film. Great characters. Outstanding direction. One of the few Stephen King adapted movies I've ever seen. The storytelling and pace were perfect. And your empathy and candor were authentic. I sawthis come up and made time to watch the reaction. I am a little surprised you didn't make the connect of Sam Rockwell in the cell with his counterpart in Iron Man 2, Justin Hammer. Addie: This one really BROKE ME. Me: Oh, sweety, this one broke everybody down to a puddle of tears. I've seen grown big tough he-men bodybuilder types sit down to this movie and 2 hours later their reduced to blubbering messes of tears. It's how we respond to good art, it just makes us feel.

Love this film and your reaction. If you like the Stephen King adaptations, you would probably enjoy _Stand By Me._ It's pretty nostalgic and sentimental, but not nearly the water works show that _The Green Mile_ tends to bring out.
I'm not a person who shows much my emotions, but man this movie broke me really bad the first time, and every time I see it the tears roll down no matter how much I try to hold them in. Also, this is based on a real story, but the real John was just a little kid that was sentenced for his skin color, truly heartbreaking.
22:30 Addie still did not know, how many more tears are going to follow This movie is a wonderful masterpiece I grew up feeling what others around me felt. Took years for me to realize, that others do not have that flaw. My only superpower were very clear and perfectly reliable dejavus. Incredible timing - my flaw started to fade out a few years before this movie came out. Only thing left for me is heightened empathy, no more glimpses into the future.
Lay off any stimulants: caffeine, sugar, etc. Do not use any mind-altering drugs: alcohol, tobacco, etc. Sleep at least eight hours a night. Meditate. Set a personal goal of a solid hour of meditation without a single mental interruption. Your superpower will return.

While there are a TON of villains, bad guys and all-around evil characters in media. . . there is a surprisingly short list of characters who are pretty much universally REVILED and completely loathed. And Percy is definitely on that list! It's quite impressive if you think about it.

This movie breaks everyone - every time. This and Shawshank are my favorite movies of all time. Interesting they were both written by Steven King and also directed by Frank Darabont. there's lines in this movie that break me every time, the second is the second use of I'm afraid of the dark, breaks me every time. and the first, that's his explanation of the feeling of how the world is to John, 'its like pieces of glass in my head', it's a difficult one to explain really but the gut punch I got in hearing that for the first time was shocking.
I don't get why this movie didn't get as much reach and fame as Shawshank Redemption did... I'd heard tons of things about Shawshank but literally nothing about this one... until like 2 weeks ago when one of my friends told me about it... And when I watched it, I was devastated. I only went into the film knowing that Tom Hanks is in it but didn't expect it to be that heartbreaking and sad of a story but here I am crying over the movie. This was the first film to have had that kind of effect on me! Just speaks about how great the film is... and the acting really sold out the roles... Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan, specially Duncan's acting was so, so heart wrenching! Truly one of the best novel adaptations out there! Glad you watched it too, cuz I feel like this is one of those films which is a must watch in life!
What I actually recommend, is buying the DVD and play it on a CRT TV for a much original experience! I remember watching this on a VHS player with Mum and older Brother, and never in My life did I feel so sucked into such a powerful journey of emotions! I was 10 years old when i first saw this movie. Had my eyes crying thwt night . i wasnt supposed to be up and all. I had school the next day . but when john death scene came on. I couldnt take it i cried and i just cried with you now .

Frank Darabont just really knew how to adapt Stephen King’s works. These movies are also a great way to show people that King isn’t just a horror writer
The book is still worth a read as it gives you more information about John and his life. It points to him being so very much older than thought to be.

The story of a wandering man with the gift of healing & the ability to feel the pain of others and with the initials "J.C." Stephen King is a lot of things but he aint subtle.
Surprisingly, a lot of people don’t catch the connection.

The man dancing in a tuxedo in the old movie is Fred Astaire. He and Ginger Rogers made many movies like this involving dancing (I haven't seen them). I saw an old film of a game show from the 50s and he was the guest that week. A panel of people who were blindfolded asked him "yes or no" questions to try to guess his identity. He was super humble. One of the questions he received was "Are you a singer?" and he said "No." Later, when his identity was revealed the woman who had asked him that question said, "Why did you say that you aren't a singer? You're one of the greatest singers in the world." His answer was, "I just don't think so." A really modest, humble guy.
Any one who doesn't cry when watching the Green Mile is heartless, I have it on DVD and cry each time I watch it & shed a tear again watching your reaction 😥

I always liked Michael Clarke Duncan, A lot of actors go on TV to promote things but he had worked in the real world and seemed genuinely happy to be where ever he was. He was approached about joining a gang when he was young and he told them he was more afraid of his Mom than them...
Considering that a mouse's normal lifespan is 1 human year, and Mr. Jingles has lived for at least 60 times that long, we can estimate that Paul's punishment will last for at least *5 THOUSAND* years.
Interesting fact about the actor who played Percy. The 51 year old actor was teaching an acting class and had a 16 year old student in that class that he married. Seems he wasnt just a creep in the movie.
If Paul is 108, that make Mr Jingles 64 or 65 years old. The normal lifespan for a brown mouse is 12-18 months. That means Paul is going to be around for a very long time.
Phenomenal reaction, Addie. Of all of the tear-jerking movies that you've reacted to, this one is at the top. I just watched the movie recently, after watching The Shawshank Redemption (1994), alongside your full-length reactions to both movies on Patreon. I totally agree with you, it was a heartbreaking story. However, I was feeling disappointed at myself for not being able to cry during the movie, which I don't know why. In fact, when I was very young, I used to cry during the "Hallelujah" scene in Shrek (2001), given how sad that scene was and when my girlfriend & I saw I Still Believe (2020) in IMAX, I was almost close to crying near the end. This explains how I have evolved over time. Hopefully, I'll watch another movie that can succeed at making me cry as an adult. Only time will tell.
Speaking of Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP), I suggest Armageddon (1998, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Michael Bay), The Scorpion King (2002, But watch The Mummy Returns (2001) first. WARNING!: There are THREE SNAKE scenes in this one), and The Island (2005, also directed by Bay, WARNING!: There is a brief SNAKE scene in this one). With David Morse, I suggest The Rock (1996, another Bay/Bruckheimer movie), Bait (2000), Proof of Life (2000, with Russell Crowe & Meg Ryan), 16 Blocks (2006), & World War Z (2013, UNRATED).

What a fantastic reaction to such a wonderful film. Del's execution is one of the most horrific scenes in all cinema, and Del's relationship with Mr Jingles is surely one of the most touching. The book is definitely worth a read and King has said that this film adaptation is his favourite ... which is saying something when you think of movies like Shawshank Redemption, Misery, The Shining etc etc.
Percy is one of the most hated characters in cinema.

Before this book come out, King had been called eventually a one trick pony. And he said "bet". And then he released several non-horror, incredible books.

There are several great, biblical, references besides John being Jesus, that I really love. Like Paul, being forced to live for so long, as his punishment for killing him. He is a, great, analogy for Longinus, the Roman soldier that pierced Jesus' side with a spear, and was cursed to walk the earth for eternity as his punishment.

The Writer/Director Frank Darabont often gets overlooked because this was based off of Steven King's original work, but Frank has a lot to do with these movies being so emotional. He also wrote/directed two more Steven King stories in The Shawshank Redemption and THE MIST (2007). Both emotionally charged. Steven King even praised Frank's work with THE MIST, saying Frank's movie ending was better than Steven's own ending in his book. If you haven't seen THE MIST yet, add it to the list.
I love how Stephen King has written stories in every type of genre there is - horror, supernatural, suspense, crime, science-fiction, drama, romance, true story, fantasy and who knows how many more.
it is implied in the original book that john could be about 500-600 years old and that paul could live to be at least 200-300+.
John means Beloved and cofe", sounding like but not the same meaning a different meaning, Cough (y) meaning the state of many times coughing(out death, pain and evil) The beloved who sucked in pain suffering evil and death and then coughed it out for to deliver others.

dont know if you will read this, but the lady in the sky when they went to "help the lady", is from another of stephen king's books, "the stand" and he is seeing mother abigaile. stephen king's books link together at some point and its cool if you can see the link in the movies(sometimes places,sometimes people).

Me: Oh, sweety, this one broke everybody down to a puddle of tears. I've seen grown big tough he-men bodybuilder types sit down to this movie and 2 hours later their reduced to blubbering messes of tears. It's how we respond to good art, it just makes us feel.
The mouse lived at least 20 times his normal life span. Can you imagine how many years Paul has to endure? Watching anyone he gets close to die as he lives on. Great reaction to this fantastic movie! I have subscribed.

Love this film and your reaction. If you like the Stephen King adaptations, you would probably enjoy _Stand By Me._ It's pretty nostalgic and sentimental, but not nearly the water works show that _The Green Mile_ tends to bring out.

I'm not a person who shows much my emotions, but man this movie broke me really bad the first time, and every time I see it the tears roll down no matter how much I try to hold them in. Also, this is based on a real story, but the real John was just a little kid that was sentenced for his skin color, truly heartbreaking.

I grew up feeling what others around me felt. Took years for me to realize, that others do not have that flaw. My only superpower were very clear and perfectly reliable dejavus. Incredible timing - my flaw started to fade out a few years before this movie came out. Only thing left for me is heightened empathy, no more glimpses into the future.
Lay off any stimulants: caffeine, sugar, etc. Do not use any mind-altering drugs: alcohol, tobacco, etc. Sleep at least eight hours a night. Meditate. Set a personal goal of a solid hour of meditation without a single mental interruption.

While there are a TON of villains, bad guys and all-around evil characters in media. . . there is a surprisingly short list of characters who are pretty much universally REVILED and completely loathed. And Percy is definitely on that list!

This movie breaks everyone - every time. This and Shawshank are my favorite movies of all time. Interesting they were both written by Steven King and also directed by Frank Darabont. I don't remember seeing any reaction content creator (male or female) not cry during this movie. It reaches deeply into your soul and shakes you hard with so many emotions. there's lines in this movie that break me every time, the second is the second use of I'm afraid of the dark, breaks me every time.
and the first, that's his explanation of the feeling of how the world is to John, 'its like pieces of glass in my head', it's a difficult one to explain really but the gut punch I got in hearing that for the first time was shocking.

I don't get why this movie didn't get as much reach and fame as Shawshank Redemption did... I'd heard tons of things about Shawshank but literally nothing about this one... until like 2 weeks ago when one of my friends told me about it... And when I watched it, I was devastated. I only went into the film knowing that Tom Hanks is in it but didn't expect it to be that heartbreaking and sad of a story but here I am crying over the movie.
This was the first film to have had that kind of effect on me! Just speaks about how great the film is... and the acting really sold out the roles... Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan, specially Duncan's acting was so, so heart wrenching! Truly one of the best novel adaptations out there! Glad you watched it too, cuz I feel like this is one of those films which is a must watch in life!
