And, they are more than capable of getting what they need to do it. I'm surprised no mention was made of the mirror universe version of this vessel used as the flagship of Regent Worf during the liberation of Terok Nor.
IMO their variety of ship designs makes an assembled Klingon fleet visually interesting, second only to the Federation, and much more than the other interstellar powers.
@@sethcourtemanche5738 they call it an “attack cruiser” on the shows which is a totally made ship classification. Fighting ship classifications go like this corvette < frigate < destroyer < cruiser (first light, then heavy) < battle cruiser < and then finally the battleship which is the most heavily armed and armored, but also the slowest. I guess you can call a really powerful type of battleship a dreadnought but that’s more of a historical name based on a ship that Britain made that was named The Dreadnought. Other countries began making similar ships and calling them “dreadnoughts” but after a while nobody used that term anymore, they just called them battleships. So an “attack cruiser” would probably just be a fancy Klingon way of saying battle cruiser. And the Negh’var should be a battleship.
It was also first seen in the final TNG episode, All Good Things... as part of the alternate future timeline, along with the triple nacelle Enterprise D.
Don't forget Worf was in command of one as his personal flagship in the mirror universe the first time was when Sisko learned the resistance had built they're own I.S.S. Defiant and the second time was when Quark and Rom had to steal a Klingon cloaking device to save Grand Negus Zek from the Alliance and in both cases the ship was badly damaged.
Federation ships, especially Dominion War builds were very sturdy. The reason why Starfleet took such heavy casualties was due to the lack of new build vessels at first, fielding mostly older Miranda and Excelsior Class vessels. Once the Defiants, Akiras, Steamrunner, War-Galaxies, and Sovereigns started to roll out in greater numbers, you start finding that Fed vessels have become very hard hitting, and can take big hits
Gothic7876 *Look.* Federation ships usually don't have as beefy and respectable a build about them compared to Klingon or Romulan ships. The way they are designed often has both the main command section and the engines separated from everything by thin members that just don't look very strong. It could be the strongest metal in the verse making it up, but the audience impression is that (as an example) the Enterprise is fragile and is in serious danger without their shields.
The first time I ever saw the Klingon Negh'Var class was in the final 2 episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation 'All Good Things' when 2 of these ships destroyed a defenseless Federation Medical Ship before one was destroyed by the Galaxy X Class Dreadnaught U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D.
The designer of the negh var made it look smart. When they have to make a design thats restricted by having to be a certain way like because its star trek and klingon it isnt easy making something unique and original and that looks good. The negh var is excellent.
Just like how the Vor'cha went from being 1 flagship in TNG to becoming the mainstay during the dominion war the Negh'var would have done the same if Trek had continued.
Well done essay! My favorite Klingon ships are the K't'inga and the Vor'Cha classes. And, like the character that inspired my screenname, I don't really think much of the Negh'Var....but this was still a nicely done, informative essay. Keep up the good work! Q'apla!

It also needs to be noted that the ship that appeared in the last Mirror universe episode in season seven of Deep Space 9 as commanded by Worf's mirror universe counterpart appeared to have been one of these and it got it's ass kicked by the defiant class ship built in the mirror universe.
Vo'Quv-class carriers. They're playable in ST Online. 1,250 meters long, but no cloak. The Bortasqu' class was only 50 meters shorter, but it had a cloak and was used as a heavy battlecruiser.
Star Trek Online has the Vo'Quv and Bortasqu'-class dreadnoughts, the lead ship of the latter becoming the flagship of the Klingon fleet under the command of Captain Koren.
Marcus walker Don't forget the safety protocols have been disengaged. Ok, question about disruptors. I know that good guys use phasers and bad guys use disruptors in personal combat because disruptors cause an inhumanely painful death while phasers vaporize you quickly and cleanly. But why, then, would you use disruptors in ship-to-ship combat? Or if they have some other advantage, why wouldn't good guys use them on their ships, too?
A little late to the party here but iirc on Alpha canon website it said that disruptors can be built more compactly than phasers for the same power output, therefore a disruptor and phaser bank of the same size will have the disruptor putting out more raw damage. However phasers are less power hungry and safer/more reliable. Disruptors are high alpha strike damage with easier transfer between beam and pulse fire modes, at the cost of lots of power draw and some unreliability. Phasers deal damage over time (more focused on combat endurance), are more reliable and require less maintenance, and are more energy efficient (which means more power to shields and other subsystems) but take up more space on a starship Each weapon type is actually quite fitting with their respective cultures. Klingons expect to die in battle so they go guns blazing at highest damage output as possible, not immediately concerned about disruptor power draw, maintenance and reliability since they are likely not going to survive the fight. The Federation on the other hand with their phasers places a greater importance on combat endurance, reliability and energy efficiency since they expect their ships and crew to survive and engage in multiple fights over time
This not really an error...more like an omission...20 years in the future in the alternative future created by Q, when the Klingon's attacked the Pasteur, they sent 3 Negh'vars which were repelled by the Enterprise Galaxy X class spinal mounted phaser which ripped through their shields like they weren't there. I always thought they were bigger than the Galaxy Class based on that episode and their appearances by Deep Space 9, but whatever. I've only seen the 3 heavy pulse disrputors fire...where did the 20 hybrid disrupted information come from?
Oh god, i remember my days in STO, flying a vintage D-9 Battlecruiser, waiting in the brairpatch in cloak and popping out and delivering a good load of surprise butsex to unwitting Fed and later Romulan players

I think those heavy, under slung disruptor cannons would have better utilized as a modular weapons platform, capable of being switched out much like a Miranda or a Nebula, for mission specific purposes.
I imagine the disruptor cannons would continue to be one of the modules. But there would still be the problem of drag from the added mass. The Miranda and Nebula classes were designed to balance those modules.
