    You've made a good case for the idea of making the Mother T. rex as the object of Buck's revenge. But if it was to go that way I can see a Buck-only spinoff where they could reuse Rudy as a new antagonist for him to face off against.

    • @StoryLaboratory
      @StoryLaboratory  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks for watching, and I appreciate your thoughts! I could definitely see a character like Rudy being used in another story as well if they decided to go that way. Definitely makes you think about how the stories could have been better with a few small changes!

      It could've been interesting for him to hear trex and agree to join because he thinks she is the one. But then, after he learns his lesson, make it come to the point of him realizing it was a different trex, unnamed and unknown, that has that actual missing tooth. This could be well justified using the flashback since it's a dark stormy night and he could've mistaken momma trex for any trex since it was his first day in that land of the dinosaurs.

    I actually think Ice Age 3 is a very different movie from the first two and it works just as it is, it doesn't need to follow the same structure, it doesn't need character development in the same way, and Buck especially works just the way he's presented, and it's just a really fun and exciting ride that expands the universe of the franchise. I actually think this is the best one of the series or rivaling the first one.

    I think the Third film is a lot better than the second though, at least from a character standpoint. I wish you had touched on Diego here a little more, because he does have some kind of an arc in this movie. He feels out of touch with his predatory instincts, and leaves the herd because he feels like Manny won't want a predator around his daughter: Buck (whom I personally find super annoying) shows him the kind of adventurous life he wants to lead, but he sees how empty and alone it makes him inside (see that conversation between them when Buck is considering going to the surface). And when he defends Ellie in labour from the guanlongs he realises that maybe he does have some use around the baby. It's not perfect, but it's something. I really wish this movie had been the last in the series, it's such a nice book-ending when Ellie tells baby Peaches "Welcome to the Ice Age"
    ...Also I just noticed how stupidly big those dinosaurs are. A T-rex should only be about the height of a mammoth...wow

    • @buzzytrombone4353
      @buzzytrombone4353 5 лет назад +9

      Honestly if you ask me, I think the fourth movie should've been the last movie of the series as while the third movie did finish up a sort of apology for Manny, the fourth one to me, was Manny accepting that apology, fighting for the lives of his family. Not wanting that life to leave him again.

    • @jwroot
      @jwroot 2 года назад +5

      Buck wasn't THAT annoying in DotD at all. CC is where he REALLY got on everybody's nerves.

    • @yarpen26
      @yarpen26 2 года назад

      I think you're looking for something that isn't there. Him finding Buck's lonely adventurous life alluring would have made sense had we not just seen him barely able to catch up with a gazelle because of how out of shape he's gotten with age. Diego's _old,_ not bored. And even disregarding all that, he barely gets any spotlight at all. He has his introductory scene, he says to Manny he wants to leave, then he makes a few lines along the way but they feel like script fodder, just to give him _anything_ to say, because Ice Age never lets go of characters past their expiration date-and then, finally, we see him learning to forget he's tired as he runs and... that's it. He's as pointless to the story as Crash and Eddie are.
      At the same time, it's hard to get meaningful ways for your characters to evolve via when you have to split a 90-minute runtime between so many of them, and let's not forget just how much screentime Scrat stuff takes up. Rather ironic considering that his little love story is just about the best arc in the movie as it's not only a fresh take on the character two movies in the making, but it's one of the rare occasions where genuine development occurs almost entirely via slapstick.

      I believe the dinosaurs are around the scale they should have been if the Mammoth characters were humans instead, but are probably a little large even then. Really makes the scene where they flintstone down the Brachiosaur(?) even more ludicrous.
      Funnily enough, the Guanlong seem to randomly be about right-ish scale wise (depending on which Smilodon species Diego is) and you get outliers like Rudy and the Pachycephalosaurs who are ludicrously large even by these standards.

      Yeah I don't like ice age 2 either. Eh eh. In fact, I couldn't agree much more here. Ice age 3 is WAY better than ice age 2. Better animation, interesting new characters, I love dinosaurs, good story telling, and I honestly think that ice age 3 would have been a perfect conclusion to the entire franchise. No need for ice age 4 nor ice age 5.

    I have an idea for a Crash and Eddie's character arc in Dawn of the Dinosaurs:
    After Diego says goodbye to Sid, the latter tries to raise his own Herd before falling into the ice cave and finding the three dinosaur eggs. First, let's assume that instead of trying to create his own Herd, Sid was simply hanging out with Crash and Eddie while the three feel sad about Diego's departure as well as Manny and Ellie not spending time with them due to their upcoming baby. Then, after Sid landed in the cave, Crash and Eddie would remain on the surface and go after a vine to help their friend out, and when Sid left the cave, he would bring the three eggs together and explain his decision to the two possums to adopt them. Crash would love the idea immediately, and would beg Sid to let him help raise the babies, which Sid would accept, while Eddie would be more reluctant, but would agree to help Sid and Crash raise the babies, but only until they manage to find their real mother. Then, when Momma Dino showed up to pick up her children, while all the animals run from hee, Crash and Eddie would go to Sid in the mini-cave to convince him to return the babies to their real mother. Then, when Momma took off the rock of the shelter and dropped it when she saw her children, which would fall right into Crash's tail, trapping him while he pleads Sid and Eddie for help, and Eddie would procceed to try to free Crash while simultaneously trying to convince Sid to return the babies, the same way Manny and Sid did in the real version. Momma Dino would then try to pick up them all, as the two possums would also be partially responsible for her children's disappear, but Sid would save Crash and Eddie by pushing them out of the way, simultaneously releasing the tail of the former. Crash and Eddie would then play dead to escape Mama Dino like possums do, as they would need to be free to save Sid. She would convince herself that they are dead, and walk back to the Dino World with Sid and her babies, unaware that Crash and Eddie would be with following. However, soon they would both pass out from exhaustion, as the T-Rex would prove too fast for them, and when they woke up, they would be found by Manny and Ellie, and the quartet would follow Momma Dino's footsteps together. Also, supposing that her stupid joke that they initially tried to leave Sid behind until Ellie called them out didn't exist in the movie (it might even be for comical purposes, but only horrible friends would do such a thing), they would be the first ones to enter the cave.
    Addiotionally, Crash would be the one to "trick" the brachiosaurus into helping the gang escape the ankylosaurus instead of Ellie as a rare example of his intelligence, while the others would be completely frozen out of fear until Crash calls them to climp on the brachiosaurus. Also, although the two would be both impressed by Buck's skills, Crash would be the one to actually idolize the weasel, while Eddie would be more skeptical towards the Buck, harboring an opinion of the one-eyed weasel similar to Manny's. However, unlike the mammoth, Eddie would realize right away that Buck is the team's only chance of survival in the hidden land of the Dinos, and he would actually be the one who would ask for Buck's help instead of Ellie, albeit he would do so with some reluctance, still not finding it a good idea to get too involved with the weasel. That said, he would be as impressed as Crash, Diego and Ellie by Buck's story of his first battle with Rudy, and unlike Manny at first, Eddie would actually believe in Rudy's existence.
    Oh, and one more thing: they would join the final battle along with Buck and the main trio, while Ellie stay in the cave to protect new-born Peaches. Speaking of which, what about if in the final battle, Momma Dino is the one who save Buck at the last minute from being eaten by Rudy instead of Diego. Then an epic fight between the two dinosaurs would begin while Buck, Manny, Sid, Diego, Crash and Eddie work together to reach a high outer rim of the cave, where the sextet separately shoot down eight groups of large orange flowers to knock rocks down on Rudy's head. After the group manages to distract Rudy with all the falling rocks, Momma would knocks Rudy off a cliff, and the rest of the movie would be just like it is.

    You know, I think the main reason people don't like Cars 2 is because there's no internal journey, and people don't like Brave because there's no external journey. Which is fine, but not what Pixar does.

    • @StoryLaboratory
      @StoryLaboratory  7 лет назад +6

      Cars 2 definitely lacks a substantive internal journey, which I think is jarring in the Pixar lineup because that's often what they do best. Good observation! They kind of tried to have Mater deal with feeling like the "fool" and gaining a sense of self, but I think part of what makes Mater an appealing character in the first film is his strong sense of self, naivety, and oblivion, which makes this attempt in Cars 2 feel dishonest.

    • @NitroIndigo
      @NitroIndigo 7 лет назад +1

      Story Laboratory I could write an entire essay about why Cars 2 bothers me, then go weep internally about a certain weaponised Gulfstream jet voiced by Jason Isaacs who's in the movie for maybe five minutes. I keep re-evaluating my opinion on Cars 2, and my current opinion is that there's plenty good in it... in the background or subtext.
      Cars 1 also has no external journey. And one guy said Lightning didn't develop, and included Cars 3 in a list blanket-criticising several Pixar movies on the day it was released.

    • @StoryLaboratory
      @StoryLaboratory  7 лет назад +1

      Haha! I didn't realize Jason Isaacs had a role in the movie. After looking it up, he apparently voiced two characters in Cars 2! One of them is an associate of Agent Finn that appears near the beginning. I think there are some pieces that have potential, but they just mix together in a strange way.

      That could’ve been a motivation too. Which would’ve gone with the series’ themes of family. If Buck was lonely and wanted to join their herd. And/or get revenge on Rudy. But then Buck doesn’t join the herd at the end. And goes back to the dinosaur world to get revenge on Rudy.

    Speaking of kids not minding things as much, I specifically remember The BFG being the first story I genuinely disliked. The ending felt so anticlimactic.
    I'm also making a video where I critique the storytelling of several video games, in a similar style to this channel, and it made me realise: in video games, you can get away with bad writing to an extent as long as the gameplay is solid. The most common example of this is having a passive plank of wood for a protagonist, who's supposed to represent the player.

    • @StoryLaboratory
      @StoryLaboratory  6 лет назад

      I actually haven't read the book or seen the recent movie for The BFG, but I'm interested in checking it out. Storytelling in video games is a very interesting topic! I think storytelling is definitely not given as much priority as much as it should, with some exceptions of course. Would love to see story given more weight for games!

    • @NitroIndigo
      @NitroIndigo 6 лет назад

      In a video game, the only thing a story _has_ to do is justify what you're doing. While there's nothing wrong with having a complex story in a video game, they're fine without them.
