    I’m gonna be honest, the first ice age felt like a genuine film trying to tell a story about how a lonely mammoth, an arrogant sabertooth,and a idiot sloth had to take care of a human baby. What I’m trying to say essentially is it does not feel like a cash grab.

    I really liked the first two. I thought their stories made sense for the time period as well, still keeping us within the realm of reality. Third one was meh, still alright, ill watch it. But the fourth one I feel is where they really started to mess up. They started focusing on scrat way too much, basically making him a main character. And the whole creation of the continents and solar system? Thats way out of the realm of reality that the first two were in.

      He was literally the main reason the plot conflicts of 4 and 5 happened, and I'll never understand why they would do that. In fact his scenes in 5 are the weakest in the franchise, because he's in space the entire time and most of them are just reused from the short that preceded The Peanuts Movie and acted as a trailer for the film.

    • @sirclassicalhou3650

      Indeed, the 4th film really started to make things worse and make it feel like a completely different world than the first 2. It was just too wacky, unrealistic, and idiotic.

      I love the first movie, the second one... umm not that much like the first movie but it was ok, and the third movie was also pretty fun to watch and i thought that the group finally having baby peaches was a great way to end the ice age trilogy. But... then we get the fourth movie, ok i'll admit, i do see the 4th movie as a guilty pleasure, it's not good like the first three movies but i do like some parts of the 4th movie. And then the 5th movie..... ugh... now that one was just dumb...
      it's just sad how blue sky prefers to make more ice age movies instead of working on different movies, i honestly want them to make a sequel to robots, which is a very good but unfairly underrated movie.

      I've seen an argument in another video saying how Ellie's flashback wasn't as effective as the cave scene in the first movie, because we have already assumed that she was adopted by possums, while the cave scene revealed for the first time what happened to Manny's family.

    Having coincidentally watched all 5 of these movies over the last couple weeks, I think the main reason for decline was them not only milking the franchise, but also the direction and just plain running out of ideas. The first one was directed by Chris Wedge, then the second and third by Carlos Saldanha, then they got different directors from then on, and it shows. These films also follow a similar formula that makes them feel samey, and they rely a lot more on jokes in the later films.

  • @dinamirm.9290
    @dinamirm.9290 4 года назад +8

    The first film was the best because it had more to tell than the others. Other films slowly added more characters and their stories that it didnt left much time for the main plot. You see, I saw the first movie when I was a child and from then on, I would sit and watch it again anywhere I was, anytime it was, and it continues till now. I grew up with that animation, it tought me valuable life lessons, created many of my thinking algorithms which I still have and most essentially it showed me life. I didn't realize back then but I see it now. From the mothers death and from being found by Mandy and Sid i learned that life gives and takes. I saw that misfortune happens and there's no stopping. I learned kindness can change people. I actually learned how to make friends with other children. I understood the importance of taking responsibility. I longed to have a group of close friends even though i never was interested in others company. And I saw how family is important. Children understand_they can't tell or name it_the look in others eyes. I knew_as audience_that Mandy was the last of his kind and i saw the way he looked at those cave drawings later in the film. It felt aweful. To be alone.
    I know many people say: kids? They're too dumb and immature to ubderstand these stuff.
    But that's wrong. I know. They might not open it and talk about it like I did now. It all happens in their minds. Shaping their brain, the systems and thoughts. It might even remain with them for the rest of their lives.
    I won't exaggerate. Many say I do when I say this animation made me make some of my decisions that I should make when Im 30 or 40. I don't. One of them is adopting. I saw the child lost his mother and parted from his father. He was lost and soon to meet death. Then Mandy and Sid showed up. The child found a family_not the same species as him but a family nevertheless_ and comforted Mandy who thought will never have one.
    I said earlier that it taught me friendship. After they delivered the baby back to the tribe, there was no logical reason for any of them to stay together and yet they did, for a long time. Frienship is a strange bond, I can say even better and stronger that romantic love.
    The first film was a masterpiece.
    I will show this movie to my kids and not the shitty disney stuff that won't teach them nothing but being saved by some prince and fall in love and get married.

    Actually, the mini sloth scene was about Sid getting some respect that he thought he deserved earlier on in the film. I found this out by listening to the commentary by the director. Even though the scene isn't amazing, it does have a purpose in the film. Also, as mentioned previously in the video, this film franchise is about comedy. The vulture food scene is very funny, in my opinion, and it is basically the Ice Age 2 equivalent of the montage in the first film. This one was experimented with further, and was more enjoyable than the Montage in the first film. Both scenes could be cut out without the story changing, but they are enjoyable to watch. If you took the song Montage out, the herd would get to the geysers seemingly really quickly, with nothing seemingly of note happening right before it. They shouldn't be able to get to the geysers immediately, so this scene is there. I'm not saying that this particular scene is necessary for this part of the film, but something there would be better than nothing.

    • @yoboibeerus1387

      Enjoyable is subjective, the fact that the scene is pointless is objective.

    You said that Ellie delusion makes no sense, but what about that idea:
    Let's suppose that if Crash and Eddie already knew all along that Ellie was a mammoth, but manipulated her into thinking she is a possum out of fear of losing their sister if she realizes the truth? Like, their mother raised Ellie and loved her as her own daughter, but she always feared that if Ellie discover that she is from a different species, she would no longer want to be part of the family. So she was always careful that Ellie never saw another mammoth so she wouldn’t notice the similarities and raised her like an opossum to make her think she was one. Let's suppose Crash and Eddie shared that fear, and after their mother passed away, they became Ellie's overprotective brothers, and would continue to do exactly what their mother did. They also wouldn’t like Manny at first because they would think he might hurt Ellie in some way and at first they would try to get him away from their sister, but then they would discover the Manny’s tragic past and all he went through, and they would begin to like him, finding him the right dude for their sister, and they would also realize the mistake they made in hiding the truth from Ellie, since they would have learned that the species does not define the family.
    This way, do you think Ellie's delusion would make more sense?
    Also, what if there were some differences between Crash and Eddie's personalities: for example, they are both mischievous, adventurous, protective, wise-cracking, fun, goofy, hyperactive, heroic, thoughtful, sneaky, cunning, playful, daring, caring and good-natured, but Crash is more lazy, naïve, imbecile, sensitive, gullible, insecure, shy, innocent, clumsy, laid-back, relaxed, impulsive, occasionally irresponsible and resourceful, while Eddie is intelligent, responsible, somewhat bossy, optimistic, serious, hardworking, fearless, talkative, no-nonsense, easily frustrated, cranky, stubborn and sarcastic, which would cause the two of them to argue time and time again, mostly due to Crash being a fun-loving, mischievous prankster who is sometimes irresponsible and forgets to think before he acts while Eddie tends to be serious and with a strong sense of responsibility, to the point that he is sometimes accused of not knowing how to have fun (mainly by Sid and Crash), causing their personalities to clash. Even so, they would never separate for long, and soon enough, their brother/best friend bond would be tightened once again. Also, while Eddie would be domineering and often would get into squabbles with Crash over his more laid back manner, at times, he would also let himself go and join Crash in some frivolity. Also, due to Crash's incompentence and bumbling, he would be more likely to became endangered, forcing Eddie to come to his rescue, who would be very protective of his brother, even though he would also usually punish Crash for his bundering often causing him nothing but headaches, as well as causing them both misfortune.

    Today I remembered something I said in my Cars review I made last year, and realised more about it: both Robots and Cars 2 feel like the writers were so busy creating concept art that they almost forgot to write a story. Think there's more to say about that feeling?

    • @StoryLaboratory
      @StoryLaboratory  7 лет назад +4

      Interesting thought! I think it's definitely easy to get lost in the "idea" or "concept" so much that it leads to a neglect of the more intricate parts of storytelling, so I think that's worth thinking about for sure. Honestly, I feel that a lot when I watch lower budget animated short films, where there's a strong concept or premise, but that's about it. The much more difficult task is taking a premise to the next level.

    I actually the diffrence between the two films is much simpler. In the first film the external and internal conflicts were inherently linked. Manny wouldn't be growing as a person if didn't go on the journey but he wouldn't be going this journey if he wasn't growing as a person. In the second movie manny would still need to get the boat even if ellie wasn't there and even oce was melting you could still hear two meet in a different way. This disconnect makes the conflict fell feel more less impactful.

    Very good video analysis!
    I myself was thinking about good and enjoyable the first 2 Ice Age films were, and while I liked the 3rd film, I did feel by that point it got a little too cartoony and less realistic. And TV Tropes has clarified that yeah, starting in the third Ice Age, the series was getting wacky and too silly.
    By the time I heard about the 4th film, I had no intention of seeing it. I knew based on the trailers and plot description alone, that the gags had gotten so silly and stupid, that it seemed like it was a different word entirely.
    Oh, and I remember going to see Kung Fu Panda 3 in theaters in February 2016, and one of the trailers was for IA 5. At that moment, I facepalmed (literally) and knew how stupid and inferior it would be.
    In short, I have not seen Ice Age 4 and 5, and have no plan to. For me, the Ice Age films ended with 3, and 4 and 5 are best left forgotten and treated as if they don't exist.

      Yes, I so agree. I love IA1 for being such a, as I call it, "grounded prehistoric fantasy." The other movies, starting even as early as Meltdown, just devolve into comedic slapstick despite IA1 being a drama/comedy, with Manny and Diego's arcs and growth tied deeply to their relationship with humans/humans hunting them, and their growing bond with baby Roshan. All I wanted was for the other sequels to follow in a similar vein - dramedic with clear stakes becos of the human presence and getting to see Roshan reunite with his herd godfathers again in the future - and they didn't. :'(
