Dawn of the Dinosaurs is a criminally underrated masterpiece and you can’t change my mind.
It was the one I grew up with! Yeah I haven’t seen the second and only saw some of the first so the only ones I watched completely are 3 and 4 because my mom played the 4th one in me and my sister’s room when she went to work. I don’t remember any of it though.

I agree with it being criminally underrated. Ice Age and the Peanuts movie are easily the most passionate and well animated works from Blue Sky

The painting scene from the first Ice Age movie is easily the best scene in the entire franchise. Seeing Manny’s childhood as a kid made me cry since the first 2 movies were more realistic and grounded than the last two movies(yeah im not watching the 6th).
Actually that scene was supposed to be Manny's old family (mate and kid) who were killed by humans and the adventure with Sid, Diego and the baby opened his heart back up to the idea of having a family again

As a kid I understood that it was Manny’s wife and kid in the cave painting scene and only recently learned other people thought he was the kid. Man talk about making a scene 10 times more depressing.

Agreed, people only hate Ice Age 3 because it’s an Ice Age sequel, but even as one, it’s done way too well to deserve to be *this* underrated!

same here. Buck is also my favorite animal character of all time. He might be crazy, but his craziness is what makes him so cool. He is brave, charming, charismatic and has a good heart.
I remember watching Dawn of the Dinosaurs every single week as a little kid. I was seriously obsessed with that one
Fucking same but try a few days with it via redox. Cried like a bitch when I had to return it. I'm going to try to be obsessed again because most movies now a days is fucking terrible.

It’s still baffling to me that they had this many sequels and never brought back the baby from the first one but older (seems like an obvious sequel right there)

For me, the first 3 will always be classics, with the fourth being acceptable, while the others simply don't exist like Shrek the 3rd. The fourth is a little out there, but at least it follows general history. After the dinosaurs, a good next step would be the splitting of the continents, though Pangea was already long torn apart by the start of the ice age. Funny enough, in the first movie, the gang is stopped by an ice train/ship/vehicle, during the montage, so I always felt that the pirates in the 4th weren't really damaging the cannon. However, if you think about it, what happened to the underground world when the continent was ripped apart. Pretty sure they would all be dead :'(
We don't have to like the 5th movie but it's still canon. It showed us that the dinosaurs survived after the continent was ripped but they had other dangers

First 3 are definitely head and shoulders above the rest. And I'd say your ranking is totally fair for a first time viewer.
As a childhood fan of these films, the first Ice Age will always be iconic for me. It's so nostalgic, especially the song "Send me on my way" by Rusted Root. The songs, emotional moments, Diego's arc, the jokes (especially Sid), the journey and Scrat of course is just so good.
I think they really got it right on a film-making level by the time they got round to number 3. They nailed all the jokes and went full steam ahead with all the awesome antics without it seeming awkward and weirdly over the top.
After that, it really dropped off, which was a bit of a shame, but I also grew out of it at the same time.
Definitely a top 5 movie franchise from my childhood!
Finally someone that appreciates ice age 3. It was my favorite childhood movie. I saw this one about a hundred times before the second even came out and it was still entertaining, at least for elementary school me....

Personally I have always found Ice age 2 "the meltdown" to be the best quality and best story. Might be my own hot take but Ice Age 2 will always be my favourite

I honestly ranked the 2nd first when I was the kid, and while it's very nostalgic, growing up I ended up putting 1 and 3 above
First three are fantastic, the fourth one is objectively not that great but I still got a good amount of enjoyment out of it, and anything past that doesn't exist in my eyes.
Objective is a strong word to use in a subjective comment.
Buckwild. Sure. Call that objectively bad.
Fun Fact: Diego was originally supposed to die at the end of the Original Ice Age. However, it was too depressing for the kids in the Test Audiences. Diego's voice actor Denis Leary actually warned the producers this would happen, and when it was proved true, he got his wish, and Diego survived. I personally am glad they made that change because Diego was one of my favorite Ice Age Characters growing up.

I'm actually right with you. Dawn of the Dinosaurs has been my favorite since I first saw it, and I saw the movies in release order. Haven't seen all the newer ones, but of those I have seen I'd have the same ranking.

Continental drift was just good. Some things were indeed cringy, but it was very funny.

Never cared much for the sequels but the original Ice Age was my childhood. The slide scene was my favorite scene of all time as a six year old.

@@thehitman1291 I personally found this movie pretty blank. There's no real intelligent threat, just asteroids destroying the earth, and there's just dinosaurs being evil because they're dumb. Louis who isn't in the movie anymore, besides for a cameo, this character wasn't so bad in the 4th movie, so why did they make him almost dissappear? And there's Julian who's there and has no real meaning to be there. I know Peaches wanna get married, but still.

Yeah this franchise keeps getting less great imo. But my gosh, I've never thought after the 4th-film that it would get worse.

The First 3 Ice Age Movies are the ones that I will always come back to every once in a while. Even I can admit that Dawn Of The Dinosaurs is my favourite one. As I’m getting older the franchise holds up a lot less when they make something new. I’m gonna pass on number 6 as I don’t want to torture myself.

As someone who watched each film in theaters on release, this is the correct list. No hot takes.
As someone who grew up watching these, the "I believe I can fly" scene from the second one and the helium scene from the third one will always be iconic. I remember watching those with my friends at the time and we were absolutely howling with laughter. And the "Food Glorious Food" song! Ah, the memories.

I've been watching the Ice Age movies since they started and I think your list is spot on! I loved Buck in the 3rd one and that's what elevates it above the first for me. Great work!
Why are so many great animated franchises getting ruined recently? Like Sing, Hotel Transylvania, and Ice Age.
Another reason why Adventures of Buck Wild doesn’t work is that Blue Sky Studios made the other ones. Disney didn’t want to let the franchise go after Blue Sky Studios stopped making movies.

It's fun seeing someone give a genuine ranking of these films with real thought and heart put into it. Like a lot of people I grew up with these films (at least the earlier ones) and saw them all in theatres (with the exception of Buck Wild, which I watched on Disney+). My ranking is pretty similar to yours (and most other people's):

I saw Meltdown 4 times in theatres as a kid, I'll always love it the most.
I'm not an Ice Age fanatic or anything, but it makes me smile a little that you put the dawn of the dinosaurs at #1 cuz that's the one I watched the most when I was younger.
Honestly, as someone who DID grow up on these films, I’d probably rank them the same except put the first one as #1 but keep the rest in that order. But that’s only because i have an insane amount of nostalgia for the first one. My brothers and I STILL quote it to this day, in our thirties.
The meltdown is a cinematic masterpiece.
Glad I'm not the only one who liked Dawn of the Dinosaurs the most.
I enjoyed this franchise for a while, at least until I saw the fourth movie. Haven't seen the fifth one nor this new "Buck Wild" spinoff. The first film will always be the best to me because the humor, action, and drama were presented rather well. Although "Dawn of the Dinosaurs" is easily my favorite out of the sequels, thanks to its new environment, fun new characters like Buck, Scratte and the mother T. rex, and giving each of the main trio a decent arc.
For me- my favorite would have to be the meltdown, the villains were easily the coolest ones to me of the entire franchise.

I really enjoy the Second and the Fourth. I have always been excited, since I was a kid, about smaller things dealing with giant catastrophes. The idea of the 3 surviving dramatic avalanches and floods is amazing to me.

I've recently just started watching these with my kids, and I think your ranking is solid. It's a shame we didn't get a Buck Wild series, cause he was the best part of the third one.

Buck Wild is basically the Ice Age version of the Clone Wars movie
Honestly Sean with your number one pick, there’s nothing wrong with liking a sequel to a franchise more than the original. It’s often quite refreshing as most people think that the original movie in a franchise is perfect and can never be topped. But in some cases, there are others who would say otherwise. And some franchises, it shows that they can do better. They can have better stories, more emotional moments, funnier lines and moments of comedy. Even if they end up going downhill, it still shows that they outdid their original work at some point which is impressive.

Similar to the pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the first film is a genuine great movie (or in this case an animated classic), the sequel is good but not as great, the third film is solid, good even but everything afterwards fell into mediocrity or just went downhill.

2nd one is my favorite because Sid is actually super intelligent in this movie. He is aware of everyone’s problems and tries to help them with it. He is a likable character, but I like him most in this one. He made some pretty agonizingly cringy mistakes in the third film. That being said, Dawn of the Dinosaurs is my second favorite

Yes!!! I wanted this a lot once I saw your quick Ice Age 6 review (my wish came true very quickly).
My Ranking:
1- Ice Age - Such an underrated movie. I love this movie so muuuuuuuuch.
2- Ice Age 3 - Doesn't have that much emotional depth, but it has great comedy all throughout, and Buck is one of the best characters in the series.
3- Ice Age 2- This one is arguably more emotional than the first one, and it is the best one in terms of making you feel the danger of the adventure, since it really feels like they're about to die when the flood hits. However, the first one still has a better and more concise plot, and I like the third one more because of its comedy and because of Buck.
4- Ice Age 4 - This sucks so bad. It is trying to be so emotional, but it just fails because the movie thinks it's a masterpiece when it really isn't. Also Pirates? Just think back to Ice Age 1. Now imagine that while our 3 protagonists are just migrating, there is a group of pirates on ice ships. Doesn't make any sense
5- Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild - This movie is whatever. The story and characters are pretty bad, except from Buck who is just pretty good at best though. The villain sucks, but since this was the 6th installment, and I was already done with Ice Age's creator's greediness at this point, this movie doesn't bug me as much.
6- Ice Age 5- Worst main stream sequel I've ever seen. Way too many character. Where's Diego? Sid has a girlfriend! Manny has to learn that he can't protect his daughter/ be by her side always for the 3rd time. So Baaaaaad
HOW DARE YOU?!?! PUTTING A POORLY BAD FILM UNDER THE WORST ANIMATED MOVIE OF ALL TIME????!?! ICE AGE 6 IS PURE HORRID AND DOESN’T DESERVE TO BE THAT HIGH UP!!!

It's ironic. I literally watched the first 2 today for the first time and this dropped right afterwards. Go figure!
1.Ice Age-As close to an animated Cohen Brothers movie as we'll ever get,the characters are fun and I felt more emotion than I usually get from these flicks and the cave scene is up there with Ups opening and Mufasas death for animated emotion. Not a favorite but a great little movie. 9/10
2.Ice Age:The Meltdown A solid fun little sequel. I liked Queen Latifah more than I usually do,it works better as a funnier movie and less as emotional drama. Lethal Weapon 2 over Lethal Weapon was the comparison I came up with. Better than a lot of animated sequels. 7.5/10
3.Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
You're right about this probably being the funniest one so far. Loved Simon Pegg and Scrat here. Had some pacing issues in the middle with Deigos exit for a while and they cheapened the ending for me a bit but I had a lot of fun here and it was at least better than the last 2 Shrek movies. 7/10
4. Ice Age: Continental Drift- The pirates are a riot and it's not boring but the characters have nothing interesting to really do. Still not offensive but the dad daughter story is played out and beneath the franchise.Pretty forgettable really.6/10
5. Ice Age: Collision Course-Buck is still fun, the new characters are better than in 4 and the ending was pretty funny but the plot doesn't make a lot of sense and I rolled my eyes during the family drama and it backs off the core of the 4th. I don't hate it but it's maybe half a good movie. 5/10
6. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild-Pegg is trying to have fun but this was cheap, plodding and felt borrowed from a dozen other cheapquels. Weak sauce in every way. 2/10

Dawn of the dinosaurs is my favorite, I watch it every time I go on a road trip and it never gets old.
Honestly, the Buck Wild one looks like a fanfic scenario I would’ve thought of as a kid. Thank god it’s straight to streaming, that way those of us who choose to do so can pretend it doesn’t exist.

It's really not a hot take to say either one of the first 3 are your favourite. Most prefer 1. Some like me have always gone for 3 (my hot take is that I rank it above Avatar on my 2009 list). And I know people that choose 2 as their favourite.

This is literally MY tier list, I just love the 3d movie so much, especially as a kid and it still holds up as one of my most favorite movies as a teen (almost teen)

The third one was easily my favorite as well. Dinosaurs are just so COOL!!! :)
