The best way is a Chevy 350
Crate engine which I did to my 81 Transam. 4 speed with the 350 is the best way to swap.
A 350 well built can produce 400 hp or more

So the car will start in reverse instead of neutral?

Reverse lock out means the stick needs to be pulled up to get it into reverse, that's so you can't miss shift and accidentally hit reverse when you're trying for third

You can always bypass the neutral safety switch and start it even in gear without the clutch.

No the clutch pedal must be fully depressed that pushes a switch that let's the car start.
