    You can get these 79 403 olds T/As to run. I put an edelbrock intake and cam with 3.42 gears out back. Used long tube headers with header mufflers and took it to Texas motorplex. Ran a best of 14.2 at 99 mph on a hot July night.

    I’m 47 and I remember my older sister driving me around in this same car. With all the crap cars from this era, and to get rides in this when I was like 8 or 9 was a thrill. My dad had a 78 Ford Country Squire station wagon will real genuine fake wood sticker panels. So this T/A was like the best thing around. We were not rich. A family friend let my sister drive all their cars from Cadillacs, Monte Carlo’s, Cougar’s etc. But this T/A handled so well for the times. Memories.

    Very nice car but many of you caught that hood scoop decal/engine/tranny inconsistency. Nice to see there are some knowledgeable enthusiasts on these cars still out there. One other thing I don’t believe anyone caught was the comment about the leather steering wheel being in good condition. I may be wrong but I do not believe the stock steering wheel was leather and that wheel did look stock. I owned a 79 SE Trans Am with the 403/auto combo and T-Tops; it wasn’t very fast and I only kept it 2 years...big mistake. I sure wish I had it today, I would go full resto-mod on it to get the performance current but keep the look mostly vintage and I’d drive it regularly.

    • @sledgehammer8542
      @sledgehammer8542 5 лет назад

      @@bigorange113 Bruce is even more wrong than that. 403 of course was an Olds motor. Olds had big and small blocks, but the 403 is a small block. It's a 350r block with an Olds 455 crank. I love it when dealers and commenters have no idea what they're talking about. Also there was only the w 72 400 in 79. There was no standard 400. The w72 400 only came with a 4 speed. 403's were not " mostly California cars". The 403 cars were sold everywhere. They sold around 84,000 403 cars in 79. 400 4 speed was not avaiable at all in California due to emmission regulations. Not only was the shaker decal wrong, but did anyone else notice there was no engine ID decal on the radiator support? Makes me wonder if there was front end damage and that's why the shaker decal is wrong. Also I like how the " totally original car", has an aftermarket radio, speakers and an amp.. Also the back of the shaker has been cut out. Not exactly original.

    The 403's were all out of steam in 1st gear...they will NOT run with the pontiac 400, but if you can live with a good burnout car, this is the one---just don't expect too much after the 1-2 shift.

    • @sledgehammer8542
      @sledgehammer8542 5 лет назад +2

      I have had many of both engines. I love Pontiacs, but from experience I would much rather have a 403. It was a much more reliable engine and was a much more simple design. It made gobs of torque at low rpm, which worked extremely well with the 2.73 factory gear. It also, therefore had power or torque at all rpm levels. The 400 made hp and torque at a much higher rpm. Without say a 3.23 or higher gear or a manual transmission, they weren't nearly as responsive or fun. With a 4 speed 400, highway drives were unpleasant at best. The engine reved to high and sucked gas. The 403 auto was a much more useable car on any roadway. It, like the w72 400, was underrated. The 403 was rated at 186 hp. The 400 rated at 220. The 403 actually made around 225 and the 400 at 260. The torque rating was the same at 315. Torque is what moves a car. Despite your silly comment, the reality is the 403 was a great engine for it's time that pulled hard through all gears. Are you suggesting that somehow in 2nd or 3rd gear the engine just suddenly ceases to rev or make any power? Thats a ridiculouse statement that has no basis on fact. To prove this, the 400 4 speed tops out at 126. Top speed for a 403 is 142. If it makes no power past 1st or second gear, how would you explain that? Ive owned 60 plus of these cars since I was 19. 403's, 400 4 speeds, 400 auto's, some 455's and 2 ram air 3's. I speek from a level of vast experience. Of all the 70's and especially 79's I've owned, my keeper is an atlantis blue, black velour interior, 403 automatic hard top. I wouldn't trade it for any of them. This car is a joy to own drive and maintain. I guess we just disagree.

      @sledgehammer8542 4 года назад

      @@lonmcq7317 wow. Where did you get that I suggested the 403 was a great "powerhouse"? I never suggested that in any way. I made statements about how reliable and pleasant it was in a stock form. I also explained the H.P. ratings for both it and the W 72 400. I compared two engine options for a 79 Trans am. Now you're trying to compare a 1983 Z28 with a Cross Fire 305? You said you paced it? What does that mean? It still couldn't out accelerate the 3800 pound 403 automatic? Big surprise. What's the point? Yes, the 403 is a serious match for a 400, when geared the same, and with the same transmission. In stock form, the 403 is at a serious disadvantage, but I still would rather have the 403.
