The difference between 185 hp 403 and 220 hp 400 was very noticable. The 155 hp 301 was unbelievably slow trying to pull the weight of this car.
nothing beats driving a TA on a weekend !
I love TAs .... I own two show quality Trans Ams ; a 79 black Y84 400 4 speed t-tops , and a 73 455 white automatic and both steal the show wherever they go , even from exotic cars ....)
we used to have them in great numbers in Saudi Arabia back in 1970s and 1980s
This was the exact first new car I ever bought in the same color. Think is was around $8500 or so at Mack Pontiac in Toms River NJ. Boy did I love this car. It didn't hold up too well however. It was also heavy and not that fast but with that said, I was thrilled with it. Someday will probably buy a restored one.
I remember Mack Pontiac. $8500 sounds about right, my parents 1980 Turbo Trans Am (also purchased in NJ, at Park Pontiac in Jersey City) was $8900 out the door with tax. The car was $8200, just $300 over the GM dealer invoice. My father was a keen negotiator. Back then, you didn't have the tools like Edmunds and the like to know the dealer invoice prices to work up from, so it was true customer vs. salesman negotiation. I still have the car today. A few years back, I looked up the salesman online (still have his business card from 1980) and what do you know, he's still selling cars and he remembered the car and my family.
That car is absolutely gorgeous!!!!!
Tony needs to put on some gold chains and a polyester shirt for this one...
I had a '79 T/A with the Ws6 Performance package custom dress up package with velour seats and Gold package I bought brand new . It had every option that pontiac offered for Trans Am . Un fortunately my car was a Lemon . Only kept it eighteen months 😕
I have that exact car in my garage
Joey Young I too have a 1980 solar gold transam but its only 4.9 non turbo
I too have the same car and I love it.
Not a 400, its a 403 Olds.
TA does not belong on the shaker scoop, only pontiac W-72s have that. that is an olds motor.
Should say "6.6 LITRE".
@@rogermurph101 Correct. 403 Olds cars from 1977 to 1979 would say "6.6 LITRE". Also, 1977-1978 base 400 engine cars (180 hp) also said "6.6 LITRE". Only W72 cars (200 hp in 1977, 220 hp in 1978-1979) got the "T/A 6.6" decal. Also, the slash between the "T" and "A" is missing on at least the right side hood scoop decal.
Nice
i want this car :(
6:26
All my money.......if I bought it the engine would come pit tho
With the Olds 403, the shaker decal should be "6.6 LITRE" NOT "T/A 6.6".
why they put olds engines in them?
Eric Kort To meet emissions standards
And Pontiac stopped making their own engines. The turbos were chevies I believe as well
Correct it shud read 6.6 litre not. T/A 6.6
@@erickort1987 For emissions compliance in required areas (the 400 Pontiac could not be certified for California) and also due to production capacity. In 1978, GM stockpiled 400 W72 engines for the 1979 model year. When they ran out, they ran out. If you ordered a 400 and they ran out, you either had to take a 403 Olds (the standard engine), or you took a credit and got a Pontiac 301 4 barrel in 1979.
olds engine had 185hp, as this car has. the T/A6.6 pontiac 400, which only came with a 4-speed in '79 actually had 260hp,the 220 hp rating was drastically under rated as it ran a mid 14 sec time with the 4-speed. gorgeous car as i had one identical to this.
wow....how true, damn rich kids. I bought mine off a rich kid. He had to have a Jeep Scrambler....
I own a Solar Gold ‘79 T/A. I bought it 4 years ago. I’m the second owner, and it only has 86,000 original miles on it. It’s in BEAUTIFUL CONDITION,and I have the 301 with automatic transmission. I placed 3rd in my first show, and I didn’t even have the car washed or waxed! Get THIS…even my clock keeps ACCURATE TIME! I absolutely LOVE these cars! GREAT VIDEO! 😉
This is an Oldsmobile 403 ci engine if it's an automatic not a Pontiac 400!
i have a 78 black @ gold one , W72-4 speed, bought in 82 it is my time machine, i dated my future wife in it. after 33 years ,last summer found the build sheet behind the back seat.
Beautiful. I love anything trans am!
Love the GOLD ones!
i love the pontiac trans am beatiful
The Y trim in the interior is supposed to be tucked under the trim going along the windshield, not over like it is in the video, just a heads up :)
Not a 400 its a 403 olds
Beautiful car😎😎
I can't believe that people are paying even half what he's asking for that cars. I guess it takes all types.
my aunt sold hers for 500 bucks in the 80s. Nearly perfect condition lol.
🥰 This car is the one that made me want to learn how to drive. I'm in love. ❤
Does it have ac
had a really nice 78 special edition solar gold when i was younger when i was going out with my wife we had a good dinner at red lobster came out and my trans am was gone stolen that was in 1982 and it still bothers me to this day!
I assume it was never found? Where was it stolen from?
The 403 was a wimpy 185 HP and came with a 241 air plane gear in it,,
Some were equipped with 2.73 when you picked the Olds 403. Example: 10th Anniversary Trans Am 403.
Had more torque....the gearing is what hurt it.
What a cool car
glad to see that people know the W72s cause i have one
awesomeman426ci Fleming is a Big Bull Shit artist and he doesn't know the correct details on any of these cars.
+Peter Chronis screw you
Always liked the back side of this generation T/A. The front...not the ‘79-‘81 so much.
That has an 81 rear bumper
damn what happened to the fly bys at the end that you used to do?
I know right? That was Tony's signature maneuver closing out a video. Bummer.
TA`S back in my days late 70`s were rich jock guy cars although a rich farm family bought all his 3 boys a TA for a graduation present
I was 17 in high school back in 79' when I bought my trans am brand new with my own money that I earned from the stock market since I was 12', think poor be poor, think rich and be rich... 57 now and $157 million dollars later...
No T top just kills this car.
Who else saw the blue firebird at
I noticed the rear spoiler wasn't completely flush
They never sit flush. Most new owners try and get them level. One of those things that give them personality!
@pmerk36 They're always off on some cars. Van Nuys and Norwood produced these cars at 45 or so an hour, and the line didn't stop for anyone. There were a few bulletins that GM issued over the years, including a "build up" using foam tape to level them off, but many were never 100% from new.
