    One of the finest cars ever built, extremely fun to drive and handles like no other.

    • @gregepperson1793

      handles like no other is a gross understatement! I had this same exact car in high school as a 17 year old... it made me a fucking legend in my own time... every guy wanted to be my friend and every chick wanted to be seen in my car!!! all I know is later in life I had a 2002 WS6 , 6 speed LS1 monster and my 79 would handle much better than the 2002 model. The 79 always felt like it was on rails and glued to the road.... the 2002 felt like it could leave the road at any moment if you pushed it too far.. the 02' was much faster of course but the 79 would give the 02 fits around a curvy road...

    I was 20 years old and my dad was the general manager of a Pontiac-Cadillac dealership. He helped me order all the good stuff! 400 4 speed ws6 with red hobnail cloth interior and silver exterior. I was styling!

    Pontiac had great designers and graphic people in those days. Cheers to the man who specified this build, fully equipped and in an outstanding combination of colours. Thanks to the poster, excellent find.

    I ordered a new '79 Trans Am WS6 in the Fall of 1978. Cameo White with Saddle Tan custom interior. Out the door I paid just o over $8,400.00. Had power windows, locks, rear defogger, tilt wheel, power trunk, floor mats, map light, air conditioning, T-Tops. I added 1974 dual exhaust pipes, jetted the Quadra-Jet carburetor one size larger on the primary jets. Then I fabricated a functional vacuum operated air door for the shaker with a stainless steel spool valve to operate the air door. Kept the car for nine years, and sold it in the fall of 1987 to buy a larger family car.

    This is first video where someone shows the functional hoodscoop open. My 77 had it. Really cool when the 4 barrel.kicks down and th scoop opens. Audio bliss.

    My first car was a Burgundy (carmine) 1979 Firebird. Loved that car. I got a photo album of all my tickets in that thing. I was 16 yrs. old and all my friends had fast cars. Every weekend were cruzin and hot roddin in our muscle cars. Good times back then with that car. I miss it. Thanks for posting your video.

    Has to be my favorite car of all time. Like many, I had the poster on my wall. (A genuine Pontiac promotional poster as my dad sold new Pontiacs) In 1982, my rich best friend’s older sister drove a ‘79 heritage brown Trans Am. I got a ride in it once. Of course, by then I only had eyes for the sleek new ‘82 Trans Am

    My dad worked for Pontiac back in '79. He had one made like this in Heritage Brown with the gold dash, beige interior, etc... His was the only one made like it in that color. Nice car. Almost thought it was his old one. I am looking for it.

    back in '82, I had a Chevy 'vette. collector edition. I, took on any other new so called muscle car on street lights drag racing. then 1 day I lined up with a Turbo Trans Am, kicked it's tail. Thought I could do the same against a '79. I,believe you can finish the story. Enjoy my friend, you have a GEM.

    by the way, resting your hand on the shifter can wear out the synchronizers.

      With all due respect, I think your off on your assement of the original price with the WS6 option I purchased a 79 WS6 400 equipped black model and with tax and title out the door It was 6800.00. Granted mine did not have T- Tops or the hobnail cloth but still..... .

    • @scottsatren9796
      @scottsatren9796 7 лет назад

      He is about right, note he is quoting the list price not the negotiated purchase price, add all the options on this car, they add up fast. The 10th anniversary package added another 3000.00 on top of that which made it the first pony car to surpass the 10,000.00 mark. I graduated high school in 1979 & placed my order in March 78 only to be told at that time they were running low on the 400/4spds & the only way I could get it was if I ordered the 10th Anniversary which was just over 13,000.00 & all of those were only available as full option cars only. I had to have the 400 but their was no way I could swing the extra money. Sadly I ended up ordering a 4spd Z28 & I paid 7800.00 which was less then the list price & the T/A had more options to choose from & was more expensive then the Z28 to begin with. None the less this is a beautiful T/A.

    I had a 79' black on black 403. I loved that car! True story- Midwest...had the car covered all winter...1st sunny day...no shoe's...didn't take the time to get my wallet ..pulled over by a cop down a two lane road close by that is deserted for the most part...speeding well above the limit. First words out of his mouth were "nice car" 1st words out of my mouth were " it's for sale"...he didnt give me a ticket for anything...followed me home and called me the next day...I hadn't given him my ph#...he had a black vet... me in the back seat and him driving his son shotgun went speeding down the same stretch of road . me to his son..."this is where your father pulled me over". To this day I cant remember why i sold it. I miss by car.

    The gentleman in the above vid is almost exactly correct when he lists the options it takes to own one of the best of the best '79 Trans Ams. The 400 cubic inch Pontiac engine with the number matching Borg Warner four-speed transmission is absolutely essential. The decal located on the shaker hood identifies what kind of motor is under the hood. The vast majority of 79's came with a 403 Olds engine and automatic transmission. A few TA's were manufactured with an even smaller engine. Pontiac ran out of the 400's during the '79 model run. Those that have them own one of the last true muscle cars.The WS6 performance package is essential. The four wheel disc brakes were quite futuristic in '79 and the fat, gold honeycomb wheels are gorgeous. The option was popular with Pontiac again being caught short. During the model run Pontiac began offering a package that had only two disc brakes. The decals on the chrome door handles that say "Four Wheel Disc" identifies the car as having the WS6 package as do the honeycomb wheels. Factory installed Fisher T-Tops, another must have option. The '79 is a helluva lot of fun to drive with them on, but take them off and the exhilaration level is ratcheted upward.The cloth hobnail seats look luxurious and are extremely comfortable. I personally would not have purchased a '79 without them.Where we begin to differ is the inclusion of the CB Radio. You wanna play Smokey and the Bandit fine. Get yourself a "Bandit" model TA. Also there is some aftermarket Bandit pin-striping added to the car which detracts, IMHO, from the awesome lines of the vehicle.He may very well own a one off color combination. First of all, Heritage Brown was the least popular color in '79. This TA aficionado is surprised the factory even allowed this car to have a black interior. If it was equipped with the proper camel interior it would be a fine looking automobile since the interior would then compliment the decal package.In case anyone is wondering, I own the Pontiac Poster Car for 1979, a nocturne blue with camel hobnail interior, 400 Pontiac engine with the WS6 package and Fisher T-Tops along with all the rest of the toys one could order. Mine is equipped with a factory original Delco AM-FM Stereo Radio & Cassette Player. No "Breaker Breaker" for me.

    I really love this car , and yea , its the one you want. T-tops , 4 wheel disc breaks , fat sway bars , of course T/A 6.6 / 4 speed. You have everything in it. Id even use the CB radio on long drives. 1979 looks way better than the '77. you lucky guy ! Does it also have the rear window defroster ? that's the only option I can think of on that year.

    That was the original color of my 79 hardtop. It was an Olds 403 auto. I later rebuilt / modified the 403 & put a Muncie 4 speed behind it & it ran like a scalded dog!! Until the power overtook the car & began destroying it little by little , even being frame tied didn't help it. It destroyed the front leaf mounts & basically ruined the car. I cut it up & what's left ( minus the subframe & engine of course ) is setting in the back of my dump truck waiting to be recycled. It was fun while it lasted...

    Funny to see on the older cars how you reach in and start it up without pressing the clutch. Can't do that anymore! But you gotta really be sure you're in neutral!

    Beautiful car, definitely not stock cam or exhaust. In comparison to some of today's V-6S pretty slow.
    Still like to have one in my garage.

      I believe it is stock. I had a 79 with the 400 4spd, and it sounded exactly like this one. Brought teers to my eyes.

      Don't give up! I bought one after searching for a year. I found it by accident buried in a classic car dealership. Garaged 39 of 40 years with two owners and I drove last in August hitting 49k miles. Get a 4 speed and t-tops, it's really worth it. It sits dead center in my two car remodeled garage. Life is short so enjoy it.

    On a manual T/A do you still need to use the clutch? As with most modern cars you don't. I've driven a lot of '87 to '06 cars and most don't require the clutch to shift. Just curious. I've an auto T\A as I'm bit slack.

    • @taylorbauch1673
      @taylorbauch1673 9 лет назад +3

      All cars equipped with a manual transmission require you to to use the clutch to shift. Most cars with automatics allow you to select a gear "without the clutch", but that is a much different thing. Manual transmissions have been offered and continued to be offered to this day as an option on american sports cars, including some imports.

      I used to have an '99 Mitsubishi coupe that didn't need the clutch. From stop you did but once you get going and shifted at 3250 to 3900rpm you could. My Toyota Hilux diesel you had to flat shift. Not good as with all that torque just spun the wheels to 4th gear.

      eurikastock You actually could shift without it but it's not the way it's usually supposed to be. Maybe you got skills or your car was weird. Sounds like you're showing off though.

    You could get rear disc brakes in a 1969 Camaro. I never did like the TA, so in 1977,78 and 80, I ordered the Z/28 with the 4 speed. My current Z/28 which I bought in ‘81 from the orig owner is a 1970 4 speed with 3.73 posi.

    You could get the WS6 handling package without the Pontiac 400 TA 6.6 in 79.

      It was a very limited time envelope as I recall. Later on they dropped the 8" wide wheels on the WS6. That may have been in 80, I am a little fuzzy on that. I was selling them back then. 79 was a funny year with constant equipment changes from the factory.

    79,80 and 81 are the same and the last of the old style Trans am. use to have a 79 Esprit and a 81 Trans am sure miss them. my 79 was the same color as your car but had the wood style dash board and tan interior with a hard top. also had a 327 with a 400 turbo hydramatic transmission, I got clocked at a 160 mph. well racing a 73 Camaro with a small block 400 we couldn't pass each other. lol My 81 TA was gold with tan interior and had a 305 block with aa 350 transmission all stock she was a classy car but wasn't meant for to much power. With yours I am surprised that you haven't popped your T-roof yet. having to much power with a T-roof usually bends the frame and pops the T-roof out so they don't fit properly and causes them to leak. definitely love your car though, never get rid of it if you can help it. I think if I ever get another Bird it will be a 68 firebird. I love the style. I think the best style of the Birds are from 1967 to 1981 they seem to have the best body style after that they came out with the hatch back Knight rider car,
