  • Assembled at GM's Van Nuys CA manufacturing facility, this super clean, 1979 Pontiac Trans Am It's always nice to see a late model second generation Trans Am that isn't black and gold. This RARE and UNIQUE Atlantis Blue Trans Am maintained it's integrity, and thanks to a subdued monochromatic body, still looks modern even today. Up front, a slick and pliable urethane bumper hangs four pristine headlights above large dual air intakes which, while still being instantly identifiable as Pontiacs familiar split grille face, give the car much more presence. Behind that front bumper, a shaker hood proudly displays "T/A 6.6" denoting a rare and optional W72 Pontiac engine. At the sides of the car, gold "Trans Am" call outs combine with two tier marker lights, metal air extractors, Bpillar 'screaming chicken' decals and rear wheel air deflectors to give the car a detailed and aggressive look. And at the top of the car, optional chrome drip rails combine with chrome Bpillar trim to highlight a stiff hardtop roof. At the back of the car, an optional electrically defrosted rear window sits above a third gold laced "Trans Am" call out which spans a correct rear decklid spoiler; and a sweet looking blacked out tail light panel hangs above the Firebird exclusive Lift this Trans Am's metallic blue hood and you'll find a freshen engine bay which houses the final, and some say greatest, Pontiac block ever created: an original 400 cubic inch W72 V8. By utilizing a thicker casting, chrome moly piston rings, a revised camshaft, a better oil pump, a better distributor and smaller '6X' heads from Pontiac's own 350 , the W72 created higher compression and successfully reversed almost a decade of declining horsepower numbers.

    That was my car! That is me in the pic!!! By the way, I never said it was ok to put my pic on the internet!!! LOL I didn't get it for graduation, I bought it in January of '87 and graduation was in May or June of '87. I bought it from the original owner in St. Louis with I believe 10,000 miles and sold it with around 38,000 I believe. I owned it for 18 years. The only reason the miles were that high was that I went to my first year of college in St. Joe Missouri at Missouri Western and I was from Cape Girardeau. I was terribly homesick, and kept going home about every other weekend. It was about 435 miles each way, so I literally put 1000's of miles on it just on the interstate due to being homesick. My brother in law was a GM mechanic and he installed the new cylinder heads and cam for me. I had them ported and polished and I also got some cast iron exhaust manifolds off of an old GTO. I was afraid of headers b/c they always leaked but figured the old cast iron GTO manifolds, which were almost like headers, would work perfectly, and they did. I sold this when I was 36, and now I am 50 and wish I had her back. Called her Old Blue. I'm glad Gary got her and enjoyed her for so many years.

      Hello, the car is amazing as you already know! I just purchased a set of Ram Air Exhaust 2.5 manifolds and full2.5 exhaust. Thinking of doing the cam as well, can you remember what cam you used? Or maybe the installer can? I have a have a cheryy 79 TA TA W72 4 speed. Awesome!

      @@joseinterian4213 Hey there. Thanks for the compliment on Ol' Blue as I used to call her. I wish I could tell you the cam I used, but I gave the guy who bought it a huge, really thick file with everything I'd ever done on it, no matter how big or small, and it was such a large file that I just didn't even think about trying to make copies of everything. But it was perfect for what I was after - sounded amazing but wasn't too crazy. Between the cam, the ram air cast iron exhaust manifolds and then I had the cylinder heads worked on....that car really, really woke up. It was a pleasure to drive. I've tried to track it down to the present owner, but ran out of luck. Wish I could tell you the cam but I just can't. Good luck!

    That's correct, the Pontiac TA/6.6 engine was only available in 1979 with a 4-speed unlike the previous year when you could get it with an automatic. The majority if the '79's had the Olds 403 mated to the automatic. I owned a brand new T/A "Smokey and The Bandit" black with gold pinstriping a gold firebird hood decal and t/tops. My car had the Olds 403 engine. The T/A in the video has a very rare color I've never seen one in that color blue. Gorgeous car.

    My 79 is the same Atlantis Blue/ gold bird decals. Little history in 79 the when you ordered or bought a Atlantis Blue the factory put blue bird and decals. My car was special ordered with the gold bird ect. 3 times before factory consented and did it. I have seen just a handful as most were factory sent with blue bird n decals. Mine has the saddle tan interior. Love your car. Pontiac still lives.

    • @kavinskysmith4094
      @kavinskysmith4094 3 года назад

      yeah i was watching Casey Putsch the other day and one of the things he said was that they dont teach drivers to heel and toe downshift or blip the throttle rather, which causes the cars to come unbalanced at speed as they shift, and he nearly wiped out a 350 camaro with a 4 speed that way by downshifting without matching the revs
      so its really teaching error that probably wiped that and many other muscle cars out, hence why all that's left are those auto 350's and why the prices of the manuals have skyrocketed.

    • @512bb

    Back in 79 I was working for a Pontiac dealer. One the bigger dealers in Michigan. I was in sales of course and we were selling Trans Ams! Our dealership was one of the largest showrooms around the Mid West. We could squeeze 30 Plus Pontiac's on the floor if we wanted. I was so large that when I started in 77 we had GMC Motor Home on the floor. Any way all around the showroom on the cement under the very large over hang , starting in early spring we had Trans Am's parked all around the show room. It was in early spring that I ordered a White T/A with the WS6 & 400 4 speed package, no bird decal, saddle tan deluxe interior, no T-Tops, air. I had sold a Brown T/A with about the same options but no air on his car, earlier and the owner & I became good friends. Years earlier he was racing a Camaro in the Trans Am series and made some good contacts in the automotive field. Well he was able to find out that a WS6, 400 4 Speed with out air only 201 were built. Well the x they wife decided we were going to buy a house. I thought no problem because these cars had a long lead time to build. Well guess what, that car was built in no time. So I had to forfeit it. Years later I was working-sales-at a chevy dealer and a red 79 T/A no T-Tops, no air was being appraised for a trade. It was rusty! But I told the used car manager I would buy it! So it came in on trade and I bought it. Well I had it for a while slowly working on it. I had also bought a 77 That came in on trade when I was working at the Pontiac dealer that the used car mechanic caused an engine fire. Any way when I bought the Red T/A many years later I was still married to the X. A handful of years later our marriage was on shaky grounds and she talked me into selling the 79 & 77 as they were in dire need of some repair. The 77 had not engine at this time & was not running but I bought a 77 Grand Prix just for the engine to go into. So any way shortly after I sold the 79 & 77 she handed me a divorce. Any way I always have had a strong liking for 79 Trans Ams. I have dealer order guides and literature. The Blue 798 you have is awesome! By looking at it, I can see it has all the correct items for a WS6- 400-4 Speed. If I remember correctly you could order the 400 4 speed with out the WS6. I will have to look in my dealer guide to verify, but it seems that is possible. Oh also you could get this combo in a Formula, which would be very rare as everyone seemed to think in 79 they had to have a Trans Am.

      I like reading comments from former Pontiac sales personnel, especially when the '79 T/A's came in. One commenter notes on this car the Trans Am trunk decal might be a little bit high - but I love how the exhaust was redone so the splitters are correctly positioned. You'll see some restorations where the splitters hang below the rear quarter. Even worse some 1979 restorations have '77 or '78 hood decals,,,,,,lol

    Jesus I was looking up one of these with the WS6 package to figure out what it ment yesterday, as Mike Musto now has one of these, and then this showed up in my suggestions, and even after coming to the conclusion that James Garner had a point and the 78 did look better than this redesign, this car is beautiful, almost looks like a a metallic version of the Blue Bird special that old car memories covered a few months back
    as Pontiac did the same thing mopar did back in the day and would come up with odd specials such as that, much like mopar did some flower power cars of all things.
    like they had a yellow version, a blue version, the TA, the Formula that James Garner had on the rockford files, tlike you wonder why pontiac was at the top of their game while the corvette just sat and languished until the C4 generation hit and they started upping their game with it.

    If the shaker hood scoop says T/A 6.6 its the real pontiac 400 engine, if it reads 6.6 Liter its the Oldsmobile 403. If the logo's are original and correct that is.

    • @500erider
      @500erider 7 лет назад +5

      Ok, wiseguy. The reason he said this was because 1979 was the last year that Pontiac put the PONTIAC built 400 in a Firebird. And the only way to get one was to order the 4 speed. If you wanted an automatic, you got the OLDSMOBILE built 403. Beginning in 1980, Pontiac began installing its PONTIAC built 301 in Firebirds, with a CHEVROLET built 305 as an option. The 400's and 403's were no longer available, due to the EPA tightening down on emissions regulations. When the new Firebird debuted in 1982, both Pontiac and Chevrolet began using the GM built 305 in both the Firebird and Camaro. There was no PONTIAC built V8 available in a Firebird from that point until the Firebird's demise in 2002. From 1982 forward, these engines were referred to as " corporate " GM engines. It also simplified the assembly process for GM. Very much like what Ford did in 1996, when the 302 was discontinued in the Mustang, and the 4.6 liter was the new " performance " engine. They not only put them in Mustangs, but just about every other car and truck they made, as well. It was easier dealing with just one engine design, than having assembly lines for several different ones. The G8 was a wonderful " Pontiac " performance car, but it had a " corporate " GM built V8 engine, NOT one designed exclusively by PONTIAC.

      I used to sell them and thats the way they sounded. They had pretty long duration but they altered the heads to cut the compression I ordered a dark brown one loaded up but it was canceled so they had enough blocks for the 10th. Anniversary cars it really sucked when it was canceled .if you ever saw the brown one in these videos looks like mine maybe someone out bid it possibly a dealer.

    Unfortunately, the lack of the Fisher Hatch Roof (T-Tops) deny the driver of the full thrill of driving this otherwise properly equipped TA. Nobody mentions it in the vid but the car also has the highly desirable WS6 Performance Package. Unfortunately, the Flowmasters do not provide an authentic Trans Am sound. All 79's will eventually require a new exhaust system. Magnaflows will get the true aficionado very close to factory.

      You are an idiot I remember when these things were new and they would try and race the real muscle cars for the 60's and early 70's and get obliterated. No one originally bought these cars to cruise in, they bought the because they wanted a fast car new car. If they wanted to cruise they would have bought one with 301 or 305.
      The fact you would suggest that millennial started racing and street racing is an insult to just about every American hot rod lover back to the 40's. While I'm not 54 like you I'm not that much younger either but nice try.
