Hi I;m a Panel Beater working for a large company and over the last 4 months we have had 5 Land Rovers totaled with miner damage. Insurance Company's total them as it's cheaper to do that then pay for Hire cars as most parts we order are on major back order with no date on when they will turn up. Glad you got a nice one mate, Keep up the good work
Laziness on insurers part, why have the expense of a man with a pen and paper when you can just cut your losses pay out and then recoup your losses through an auction house It’s a MASSIVE scam, that’s what it is Most people don’t even realise this, but if someone crashes into your car, and you are not at fault or even in it you can DEMAND that your car is put back EXACLY to how it was before their client smashed into AND they CANNOT categorise it on the back of that, NO MATTER what the car is! Not enough people do it, but it’s in the small print, and if you SHOUT LOUD enough they can’t refuse it
Cars just get written off for minor damage these days and the insurance assessors hardly ever turn up to assess the cars...... Great video as always Dean.
Wish they wrote my car off. I had 8k worth of damage plus hire car for 4 months. Total worth more than 20k. My car is probably worth max 10k. No wonder insurance prices have gone through the roof.
@@danielwidur980 They write off EV's even quicker. The cost for a specialist who can work on high voltage and the time it takes to repair(hire vehicle costs) make it more likely an EV will be written off.
Regarding the bonnet hinges - have you never heard of a copper mallet - knock each hinge into alignment! Engineers bible - if it don't fit - hit it with a mallet. If it still don't fit, hit it with a bigger mallet - always worked out for me ! 🙂
Great job Dean and someone is going to be the owner of a cracking Defender. My insurance went up by over £100 this year, 63 plate Passat 2.0 TDI. I know why because cars like your Landy are being written off when they should be repaired.
LV tried that with me, wanted over £100 more than last year, went on compare the market and got same cover from Aviva for less than I paid LV previous year. Also never let insurers put you on automatic renewal otherwise price is guaranteed to be increased every year 👍
I personally have never been a fan of Range Rover/Land Rover.. but the new Defender has so much road presence that it's the only one I'd buy if I could afford it!
I bought a Cat. N Renault Captur that came out of a car supermarket in Derby after Storm Babet. Not only was it a bargain, but it was free of damage and required nothing more than a good airing and a wipe over inside.
Great job! My Mk4 Golf R32 was written off as Cat S purely from photos. It had no structural damage at all, im assuming it was written off as all parts are NLA from VW. Still, it meant i could buy it back cheap and repair myself 🎉
Great rebuild, you got a bargain! I designed and released the majority of those parts you replaced, great to seem them all again! Thats why the whole front end is designed like that, everything is supposed to break in a certain way to minimise damage to more important parts like the condenser and LTR.
Sweet build Dean! Defender is 🔥 clearly a major issue with categorisation currently but I think it’s worked in your favour with this one 😅 keep up the great work!
We are all paying for this waste; brothers insurance premium just risen from £500 to £1200 despite no change in status. Why should the consumer pay for the insurers profligacy?
Really depends on the customer and their knowledge of insurance , I've worked in the industry, and it's ridiculous when a customer refuses an offer then comes back with lists of extras , policies and extra damage they cause before pick up. Shite but what can you do , you need insurance 😂
👏🏽 well done mate. My wife just wrote my the 2nd family car off, the insurance has done me so bad, left with an Audi A4 needing just a new front end but at my own cost, these insurance brokers are scammers, all good until you actually need them to value your motor for what it’s worth. Oh yeah said mines structural too, all I need is a front end and rad pack. 😥🤦🏽♂️
Great Vlog Dean. Like you wasn't much of a fan of LR in general. But watching this vlog, I've grown to like this model. Agree something needs to change with classification on insurance write off's, you've just proved the system is totally flawed. All the best & look forward to your next project 👍🏻
I’m not really a fan of JLR cars, especially with the current ingenium engine issues but the transformation on that so quickly with the parts supplied really makes it look good. Well done Dean 👍
Thanks, you have done a brilliant repair and thanks for the background info on Cat N etc. I drove Range Rovers for about 15 years but fell out of love with them, too unreliable, but this new Defender is just horrible and although you brought it back to life, no way would I want it, my Son loves it , so maybe I am just too old.
Can’t get new parts quick enough, Land Rover courtesy car through insurance is extortion . Had land rover Vogue for thirteen weeks because of back order parts and the other party insurance despute. Courtesy car cost through my insurance £31000 yes £31000 , third party self insured ( bus company). Claim ended up in crown court, total bill with court costs £67000 glad I wasn’t paying, sorry to bore you but I can understand why your car was written off quickly. To many fingers in the pie, no old school assessors any more , just companies making money from collection ,storage , assessing , delivery and remarketing .Great content as usual , good luck for the future Dean.
There is something so satisfying about seeing crashed car getting repaired properly. I've been browsing through Copart every so often to see if there are any interesting ones and I noticed they even have used (not crashed) cars there on auction, those usually are not roadworthy because the yearly inspection has expired and the mileage varies a lot. In terms of price, they are quite reasonable, as I have followed a few auctions there until the end
I bumped an 18 plate A-class Amg line premium +. Proper nice car. Cracked the headlight, bumper and knocked the front wing and they wrote it off. Literally needed a bumper cover (none of the trims or grills were broke), 1 headlight and a wing
Thanks for the latest video! I am derby and remember explicitly the kayak videos doing the rounds locally when the JLR place got flooded along with multiple other units down the side of the 52 and the pentagon! Great find on the ‘new’ parts and colour match with factory paint. Sweet car, sweet build just a damn shame about that Cat S status that will stay with an otherwise perfect car forever! Shame there isn’t an independent assessment that can challenge practice such as this as could save loads of similar cars being written off with the incorrect category every year. Bonus for yourself as you can pick them up cheaper for content but will never have the resale value an N would have
I would buy this off you knowing it’s done right, let me know as I can see what you did so no issues buying a cat S as you have documented the damage fully and done a supper job with factory parts
Insurance companies just seem to have given up repairing stuff (parts availability maybe?) and instead write cars off and put all our premiums up. Mine went up by 50% this year, cheers
Bodyshops want to much money to repair cars. Or they don't have skilled staff to repair cars. Trust me, its not the insurance companies at fault in this scenario.
My cousin works for an insurance company doing body work, he has told me there is a shortage of spray painters due to covid. Loads of them left the industry and never returned
Challenge the DVLA on the CAT S, I did on my vehicle and they charge a non refundable fixed fee for an inspector to come and re-inspect, if you can prove it is not structural, they will amend it to CAT N and the vehicle is worth more. In my case, I had a CAT B and they agreed it was wrongly recorded and I got it back on the road.
I can’t understand why that was written off as a category S, especially when you compare it to some. That story about a Land Rover dealership getting flooded is very similar to what happened in East Sussex during the 2000 floods. Cars literally floated away.
Removal and installation of adaptive cruise control sensor requires additional adas calibration for proper functioning, even if no DTC are present, please refer to manufacture guidelines when rebuilding a vehicle especially if you intend on selling it afterwards.
Really chuffed with the end result on this Defender, Dean. Can't say I feel the same with insurers using A.I., basically deciding the future of a vehicle is deemed fit for the road or not. But I do agree the system is messed up, needs a complete overhaul. Probably get asked this a lot, but any new update on the Cerbera? Absolutely smashing it, keep up the great work.
Great to see something good come out the flood. We had a bloke kayaking around the island buying drinks from a petrol station. Worst but is it's nowhere near any river or canal.
It’s a real pleasure watching you do your craft truly your amazing and yes the insurance companies are mad but for you I think it’s good as this is one of the ways you make your living and for buyers it’s kind of good because the category cars are way cheaper so that makes them more affordable.
I drive past that derby dealership most days on the way to work still not sure it’s fully open yet Great repair mad that was written off bit of a bargain that 👍
I absolutely love these motor's. Hate it's called a defender but that's another story. Slightly different but, my old Peugeot 407 was written off last year. Cat S. I replaced the repeater on the wing and it went straight through MOT and I'm still using it today. They paid out, after I bought it back, more than I bought it for 4 years ago. This is why our insurance is going up. Surely it's better for the environment to keep cars going, instead of making a new one.
Dean, my mothers car was written off as cat s at Christmas, over the phone with no photos provided, just from her description. She bumped the car in front at a give way doing 5mph, you can imagine how much damage there wasn't!
Quotes for insurance go off brand new parts from official channels here in Australia and although it only took you 8 hours and assessor/repairer may book up to 3x that for the job for varying reasons, such as your suggested “paint” if you had to order from the dealer. What is probably needed is a register of new/near new parts from cars such as the ones you mention, so insurers and assessors/repairers can quote with those in mind as it does genuinely save a packet! Also insurers would then need to add into their blurb that the parts replaced would be new or genuine “as good as” new… I’d much rather have genuine “AGA” than a painted by repairer…
Hi Dean. Nice wagon, mate. Ah, Dean, this is a little job before breakfast for you,😅😅. £3k for all the parts and bonnet is a brilliant deal. ASM, what a company 👏👏. Keep up the great work, Dean. That A.I. is crap. Something has to change. 💯👌🇮🇪

I have had a car written off as cat S with similar damage, a headlamp mount, a bonnet, and the kicker that made it S, the slam panel. I bought the wreck put it through an MOT, as was, with just the headlamp realigned.
Great content, Dean you’re doing a great job on that mate. It will look the dogs bollocks by the time you finished. keep up the good work until the next one.
I agree with you there should be another category of damaged cars like you suggested Cat P for where new part notnavailable for Insurance assessment and repair purpose. You mentioned AI now likely categorising insurance damaged cars, may your Defender was categorised by AI; who knows. Your Defender look really nice.

Wtf is cat p .....no parts?😬😬👎👎👎👀👀😫💀💀💀
@@SavingSalvageyes great idea as this being such low damage but cat S will affect value 😢
Still doesn't explain why it's a Cat S. Fine, write the car off, as it's cheaper but as an N not S
