They started as a concept band. The lead singer wrote a comic and they created albums that follow the events in the comic book. It’s call The Amory Wars. It’s actually really cool if you read the comics and listen to the albums. These guys have made a ton of really good tunes, been a fan for a long time.
such good tunes. The music is quite masterful in itself then add in the extra artistic layer of the comics and story arch and its a fucking masterpiece. What a great band. One of my favorites for almost 20 years now.
They always created the album first and put a twist on their song to make it too the story. Hence why the story has changed numerous time since it was not the comic before the album, but the album before the comic.
Never expected you to hit up Coheed!!! Let's get it!! Favourite band. Very diverse in sound across albums but mainly heavy prog rock. Please do more!!! Big love!
Think of the 'double-neck guitar' as two separate instruments, that allows the player to switch between them with the flick of a switch. They are either playing one or the other. One instrument is a standard 6 string guitar, the other a 12 string guitar.
Coheed and Cambria are absolute legends that don't get enough credit for their music. Their albums are masterpieces and apart of one giant story line. They are bananas live too! This song was written towards his current wife. When he asked her to marry him, she originally said no, due to indifferent reasons that are laid out within the lyrics.
YES!! Coheed and Cambria are amazing - so many songs to review from them. My suggestions: in keeping secrets of silent earth 3, the suffering and The Hard Sell

The double guitar is 12 string on the top, 6 string on the bottom. If you watch in the video he's playing the top 12 string during the less distorted part of the chorus where he sings "Here laid to rest.." And the bottom 6 string for most of the rest of the song.

@@Coheed2113allday You're either thinking of L.S. 12:19; may i recommend 311 as the rap rock band you may be possibly looking for. But NOT any of their radio hits. nope nope. Listen to the 311 song, Salsa, for a really really good example of what the 1990s rap-rock-metal mashup trend really was. Their radio hits were more rock-ee. And I love those ones too. But anyway… yah 311 and Coheed were/are two of my personal faves of all time, for me personally.
Glad to see you listening to some C&C! This album (Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness) is one of my favorites. would love to see you react to "The Suffering" also off of that album.
I'm a relatively new to Coheed and Cambria, was aware of them for years, but some friends invited me to the first Coheed and Cambria cruise, SS Neverender, which was a blast and I'm a fan now(going on the next Coheed cruise later this month). They are all very talented and I got to talk with Claudio, the singer and guitar player, on the cruise ship. On the guitar, it is a 12 string guitar on top and a standard guitar on the bottom neck. He does use it live for this song and even though it isn't shown in this video, there is a section of this song where he plays the 12 string neck(look up a live version of this song and you'll see him switch to the other neck).
Coheed and Cambria are names of characters Claudio Sanchez (the lead singer) created for his Armory Wars comics. The albums are soundtracks to those comics.
The lyrics are about characters in the lead singer/guitarists really cool space opera. So some people hear the lyrics and are like, "omg, someone needs to check on this guy. he literally wants to kill someone."
The double necked guitar is a Gibson EDS 1275 and it is in fact necessary because it's awesome. Also fun fact: Claudio does this thing that you can hear at the start of the solo where he sings into the pickup on the guitar as well. And Attila is the band you're looking for with the rap lyrics.
The duel head guitar is used because each head is tuned differently and throughout the song he switches between them rather than having to switch the whole guitar out or stopping the song to retune
A double neck isn't that necessary anymore with all the effects you can do now, but basically it's so you have 2 differently tuned guitars so you can use both live without having to switch and also so you can switch midsong
Great song! If you watch again/show someone else then check out the live in studio version where you see Claudio playing on both necks of the guitar and playing over/behind his head and even with his teeth lol
If you did watch the Guitar Session version whích comes at top if searched, you wouldn't be disappointed as why the 12 string neck is needed during the bridge section with a whammy pedal.🎉
The song is about a man tortured by schizophrenia. He is a writer who writes the story of the rest of their albums and is being told by a demon that he has to kill a character but he thinks it means his girlfriend, who is unfaithful and he is convinced is keeping him from finishing his story. The symbol is t heir solar system, Heaven's Fence.
So u can check out Body count (ice t's metal band) - civil war Steel panther anything 3rd strike - breath it out Atilla - about that life (lyric video) These are some off the top of my head that I can think of Definitely worth the reaction sorry I don't have patrion
Seen these guys 5 times live back in high school, them and Thursday twice the same show ❤❤ the nostalgia hearing Claudio’s voice again after nearly 2 decades. Kids, enjoy life while you can WORK SUCKS :) wrote this as you said you liked his voice, sounds like dude from RUSH, forget his name 🤔
i had an on again, off again fwb and coheed and cambria was her favorite band, but i couldn't stand them, except welcome home. one night she od'd and her mom found her the next morning, dead in her bed. this song now makes me bawl my eyes out. rip, nicolette.
You know around 8:30 they begin talking about the lyrics. So like, this was written in 2003-2004, when the band was on a long tour for the second album. Singer Claudio was writing music and had written a love song called Wake Up to his then-girlfriend, and had played it over the phone for her. She broke up with him the next week, cause like, long distance is really tough, understandable right? So 20something year old Claudio took it hard, and wrote Welcome Home, now their most famous song, about hurting and anger because she broke up with him. ... Anyway theyve been married like, 12 years and have a kid lol. Every album from the fifth on has had a love song/apology song to her.
So to put a bit of music history context to that double-necked 18 string guitar: the top (12 string) neck provides a more full sound spectrum...more variety of sounds, like each of the bottom 4 sets of strings are paired an octave apart while the top 2 are tuned identically (usually, i think). It kind of brightens the sounds up to play a note plus the same note an octave higher. This was popularized by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, BTW...an idol of Claudio's. JP was kind of an innovator for unusual guitar applications in rock music.
You need to react to Coheed and Cambria - A Favor House Atlantic. It is cool and diffrent...Kinda fun. Or The Suffering They are both good. Check them out.
Another rabbit whole I would love to see you guys dive into, this and tool. Two of the only bands that could compete with ren lyrically. Also folsom prison blues is the Johnny Cash song referenced, if you haven't heard a boy named Sue it's another great cash song.
I'm not a fan of the usual Johnny Cash songs that get recommended, but I think BP would get a kick out of A Boy Named Sue. Johnny Cash is a legend. BP would love The Man In Black and Ragged Old Flag as well.
If you watch the live Guitar Center Session version of the song, you will see him play the upper part of the dual guitar. Sometimes, in music videos, they are just mimicking playing the instruments, or the shot might not be on them when they do. I would say it is more the first than the second reason.
It's a double neck guitar. One has 12 strings 1 has 6. The 12 string guitar just adds a second string to each of the 6 that is tuned an octave higher or the same note. It makes chords sound richer and more full. He did just use the 6 string neck.
I am a huge Coheed fan and i read the comics as well. Love seeing this reaction. Another band I discovered that is just totally out there but surprisingly palettable is Sleep Token. I will just say its "metal" but he has a Hosier style voice, and random hip-hop vibes mixed in. Try the song Chokehold and for bonus, they cover a version of "Hey Ya" by Outkast
To explain it simply...they are a concept band. The first 4 albums take place within the story of the Amory Wars. The main character of this arch is based on the lead singer. The album that this song is on was written after the lead singer had a bad break up. So what does he do?? He kills off the main characters love interest in the story. The break up was because she couldn't deal with the singer always being on the road. So he writes this whole break up album and if you listen to the lyrics, it is BRUTAL! That girl that broke up with him....is now his wife. They've been together since shortly after the album was finished lol. Also, that Johnny Cash song is called "Folsom Prison Blues".
I think you would like the band HED PE and Skindred because they're both metal/nu metal bands with black singers and they have black influence in their music. You may relate more to the music because you can identify the black influence in the music like rap, reggae, etc..
As a musician playing metal and rock , im a nobody but rock and metal its more genuine about human emotion , mental health and realism rather than new music nowadays where its more on partying , hedonism and romance between boy and girl (not love)
Definitely keep up the Coheed reactions. Another good one to check out would be I Prevail. They’re heavier, but the lyrics are great. Scars, Breaking Down, Gasoline, Hurricane, Bad Things, Deep End are all good ones.
The Cash song Don was talking about is Folsom Prison Blues. Listen to the live recording from Folsom Prison where you can hear the inmates cheering the line Don was saying.
The 2 necks on the guitar. Are a 6 string. And the top neck is a 12 guitar. Two different sounds. For different parts of a song. Very popular in the 70s & 80s.
The (very) TL:DR explanation of the song is that it is about the end of a long but troubled relationship, and all the different voices in your head in that moment. Wanting to get back, wanting to move on, wanting to suffer, wanting them to suffer, etc. There is also a story behind the song too but it is WAY too long to get into here.
so he did actually use the 12 string portion of the double neck, it was basically for 1 or 2 chords at a time and if you werent listening for a 12 string sound you may have missed it. for instance at 7:24 you can hear it and get a slight view of his hand on the top neck.
You should react to the drummer's old side project. He's a sick rapper. Weerd Science. Try "Conspiracy Theories Without Mel Gibson" and anything else from his first album "Friends and Nervous Breakdowns".
Maybe some Misfits or Suicidal Tendencies if you are looking for some "gangster rock". 80's/early 90's punk in general is pretty gangster, and also helped pave the way for bands like Coheed.
The double neck guitar is basically two guitars. The top one is a 12-string. The bottom is a 6-string. It allows for textures you can’t get from a “normal” guitar without switching out.
so the double guitar thing.... its because the top neck is a 12 string and the bottom is a 6. the 12 runs a smaller string next to the main ones, so as you play a note you finger the 2nd string as well to create even more harmony. its so he can switch back and forth from simple chugga chugga to the prettier parts. i assume. sometimes people use it to have each one tuned to different notes entirely but i dont think thats what he is doing here
Haha you see him jump on the upper neck of the guitar in the second chorus for just one frame! Also you were right, the song his about ambiguity of love and hate of a women.
He uses both throughout the song but they deliver different sounds. All their albums are a conned story. Coheed and Cambria are the main characters parents
The bands name Coheed and Cambria comes from a comic book series the lead singer Claudio Sanchez makes Coheed and Cambria are the names of two characters that are in the comics they are known as I-ro bots think deviants from blade runner but they have super powers and can also have kids.
Also this song is about a character named rider who in universe “created” the Amory wars he’s like the mirror version of the main character Claudio and this guy has some mental health issues and when he tries to propose to his girlfriend she says no and breaks up with him and he starts to think that his ten speed bike is a demonic spirit and is trying to convince him to kill the the mirror version of his girlfriend in the Amory wars her named being ambelina who is Claudio’s girlfriend (spoiler alert he actually kills his girlfriend irl and was killed by police in a standoff)
The video cuts out a fair bit of the song which is unfortunate. Still a great tune though. The guitar has a 12 string on the top half and a 6 string on the bottom. The 12 string is typically tuned the same as a 6 string, with the lowest four pairs of strings being tuned in octaves and the highest two pairs being tuned in unison. You get a fuller, almost choral sound as the two strings are played as one but with the slight gap between them causing the sound waves to be distinct. Jimmy Page uses a double-necked guitar on Stairway to Heaven. You could also check out John Butlers song Ocean which he plays with a 12 string guitar with a string missing.
The music has always come first. And the story is woven into it
Google "shabutie"
They always created the album first and put a twist on their song to make it too the story. Hence why the story has changed numerous time since it was not the comic before the album, but the album before the comic.

My thoughts exactly

Their low key DP guitar jokes made me laugh. Thanks lads
Yep and the upper neck is only use during the chorus, we see him use it once in the second chorus but very fast.

WOOT MY SUGGESTION! I love these guys... I would follow up with The Suffering!!
I loved your reaction to this song, but I think you should also listen to Coheed and Cambria's Key Entity Extraction I: Domino the Destitute
Agreed that would be up his alley
i read on another comment somewhere on another video that he wrote Domino the Destitute about their original bassist Mic Todd who imbezzled funds from the band and robbed some pharmacies to support a drug habit. Then of course got fired from the band. All of which I only just learned in 2024.

You guys will love Ladders of Supremacy 100% guaranteed
Definitely keep up the Coheed reactions. Another good one to check out would be I Prevail. They’re heavier, but the lyrics are great. Scars, Breaking Down, Gasoline, Hurricane, Bad Things, Deep End are all good ones.
The Cash song Don was talking about is Folsom Prison Blues. Listen to the live recording from Folsom Prison where you can hear the inmates cheering the line Don was saying.
If you want metal with a good hip hop twist - drop out kings. Dudes a F'n killer!
The 2 necks on the guitar. Are a 6 string. And the top neck is a 12 guitar.
Two different sounds. For different parts of a song. Very popular in the 70s & 80s.
He played the12 string at the beginning intro.
The song you're talking about is Folsom Prison Blues
The (very) TL:DR explanation of the song is that it is about the end of a long but troubled relationship, and all the different voices in your head in that moment. Wanting to get back, wanting to move on, wanting to suffer, wanting them to suffer, etc. There is also a story behind the song too but it is WAY too long to get into here.
so he did actually use the 12 string portion of the double neck, it was basically for 1 or 2 chords at a time and if you werent listening for a 12 string sound you may have missed it. for instance at 7:24 you can hear it and get a slight view of his hand on the top neck.
I hope someone else has mentioned it, but obviously y'all gotta do Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
So with regards to the double neck guitar, the top is a 12 string, and the lower is a standard 6 string
The double neck guitar is basically two guitars. The top one is a 12-string. The bottom is a 6-string. It allows for textures you can’t get from a “normal” guitar without switching out.
If you want hear an old school rapper sing metal, check out Body Count with Ice T.
so the double guitar thing.... its because the top neck is a 12 string and the bottom is a 6. the 12 runs a smaller string next to the main ones, so as you play a note you finger the 2nd string as well to create even more harmony. its so he can switch back and forth from simple chugga chugga to the prettier parts. i assume. sometimes people use it to have each one tuned to different notes entirely but i dont think thats what he is doing here
Haha you see him jump on the upper neck of the guitar in the second chorus for just one frame! Also you were right, the song his about ambiguity of love and hate of a women.
He uses both throughout the song but they deliver different sounds. All their albums are a conned story. Coheed and Cambria are the main characters parents
If no one has said it, the other half of the guitar is a 12 string guitar. Rarely used but necessary for some of their riffs
The guitar is a combo six string / twelve string.
Watch them live he plays the upper deck
Guys listen to Pantera Cemetery Gates !! You will love it BP on your Metal enlightenment lol😈🤘
Why does black P want to listen to that racist crap
I think their musicianship is outstanding but Black P first initial face had me laughing when he heard the singers voice.
If you want to listen to a band like you mentioned at the end thwn listen to HED Planet Earth - Crazy Legs
Someone has probably already told you in the comments but the double guitar is a 6 string on the bottom one and 12 string on top generally speaking.
The bottom neck is a standard 6 string, the upper is a 12 string.
We gotta get you on some Mars Volta
