They had an SNL appearance, did New Orleans Is Sinking from what I remember. I guess the studio and greater audience were so turned off by Gord's dancing! And then TH was considered too weird to become big in the US. As a Canadian I think it's hilarious they thought TH was too weird! One thing Americans have to understand, The Hip is literally the top selling band in Canada of all time, and Gord Downie was eulogized as "Canada's Poet" long before he even passed- hell, the province of Ontario created an official Poet Laureate position specifically to honour him after his passing. It's pretty much impossible to overstate how much this band has influenced Canadian music over the last ~40 years

When Gord Downey performed on stage he used his entire body. He swayed, he gyrated, he oscillated like liquid. When I hear this track it takes me right back to the 3-4 times I saw him live. The reason we Canadians mention when an artist is Canadian is because the music industry is set up in such a way that it is very difficult for a band that may be huge in Canada to break it into any other market. The 'forget your skates dream' seems to be in reference to a hockey player or skater forgetting one the most important things about playing the game and giving your best effort...the skates.
Growing in Canada (the band is Canadian) and understanding just how much people love hockey it would actually be more of a nightmare to forget your skates.
So that much better that it happens in a dream.

Tragically Hip was Canada's band. Limited success outside Canada but they were HUGE here. When the singer was diagnosed with brain cancer they did tour across the country (against Drs advice). They finished off in their home town of Kingston Ontario. The Prime Minister was there. It was broadcast across the country with local parties all over watching. Wasn't their best performance given his illness but it was amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. Gord died about a year or so later. He was one of the best front men of all time.

This song took time to grow on me, but man has it ever! It came out in 2002, and I think a lot of us Hip fans were waiting for another banger like New Orleans is Sinking, or Ahead By a Century. This album, In Violet Light, didn't have those so it's under appreciated, but musically it's actually incredible. Holds up beautifully 22 years later.

you made a very true statement about millions of people liking something your not into. Many of the Baby Boomer generation that grew up on this classic rock are not Rap fans. You clearly love it and it does something for you. Nice you can appreciate all these different styles of music

Feb 6th, two days ago, Gord Downie would have turned 60 😔 He was only 53 when he passed away October 17, 2017, he is so deeply missed. ❤️🇨🇦 The Tragically Hip actually played at my Prom in 1987 in Ottawa (Canada), they were basically unknowns then, we paid them with a case of beer and pizza maybe if my memory serves me right...they were different for sure for that time but as the 90's approached they just took off in Canada. I saw them many times over the years, thoroughly enjoying each time but boy how lucky I felt to get tickets to their final tour, July 2017 they kicked off their show in Victoria (BC) where I now live, it was an absolute emotional night knowing his fate, tears were flowing, we knew the end was near and 3 months later...an iconic Canadian who is missed by all. Thank you for adding The Tragically Hip to your channel.

Polo, I've just discovered your channel tonight. Through many of your videos, I have been brought back to some of the best times in my youth; discovering and falling in love with music so deeply. Like many Canadians, I miss Gord. I was feeling nostalgic, a bit of melancholy, and then you hit pause and said: "Maybe I'm half Canadian"; I burst out laughing. Thank you for that moment, amongst many others tonight.
