They aren’t an accompaniment. Some of the albums came out first. They also can be regarded on their own merits. Absolute truth. While they do take inspiration from many many bands. My favorite quote from Claudio back in the second stage turbine Era when asked what inspired their sound he just goes "rush and iron maiden". Which the song 2113 is a direct homage to 2112 by rush.
I find them far more like Rush than Queen or Kiss. Especially with the concept albums with comics for extra context. Rush 2112 has a comic book video that's amazing.
I just got my friend into their music and at first they were like "Nah I'm not a big fan" but dude two days later they were going on about how much they like their music, especially the music in Vaxis Act: II. I've been listening to their music since I was little (thanks to my dad) and honestly with every album my mind is blown again and again. I just took my dad and brother to one of their concerts not too long ago, and hearing them live was like hearing them again for the very first time
My family is sick of how obsessed I am with them. I’ve been a fan for over 20 years…. Since middle school. I’ll be reading the amory wars while listening to the songs aligning with what I’m reading. My favorite band of all time. Their storytelling is amazing but I also love music that tells a story and you have to really listen to figure out what they’re singing about, unfortunately many people don’t understand and can’t fully appreciate them.
There entire catalog is actually a story being told. This is just one small part of an incredible story. Claudio, the lead singer has written a graphic novel with his wife. Also. Absolutely incredible. Another song you should absolutely listen to is Evagria the Faithful.
I love Coheed to death, my absolute favorite band of all time, but I wouldn't call them metal. I can agree on prog, but really they're more like prog lite most of the time. But one fascinating thing about them is how they merge so many different influences and styles together in a way that no one can fully agree on their genre. I've heard them called metal, prog rock, hard rock, pop rock, post hardcore, emo . . . Really, I think they're an amalgamation of all of that, but mostly I'd put them under the umbrella of prog rock.
Tracks 2, Always & Never, 8, Wake Up, and 13, The Willing Well II: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness, are my favorites off this album. I used to fall asleep to this album all the time when I was younger.
This is also I think one of the reasons they might not be as massive as they should be based on their talent level/musical prowess. They are so good at everything musically, and check so many boxes across different rock genres, that I think they have this awkward "universal but not focused" appeal
@@mongoosemcmongoose2786 I agree with your statement. I have the same impression with Thrice, one of the most creative bands to date musically and lyrically, but don't receive the recognition that they deserve. But at the same time this is good, because bands like that don't accept to be influenced by producers and record companies and just make their own sound.
THANK YOU for sharing your reactions, and truly, "Welcome Home", to a passionately loyal fan base (affectionately called "Children of the Fence"). Coheed has been my favorite band since their first album came out 20 years ago, so I'm so excited for your journey into their discography. The single word I use most often to describe them is, "epic" because it truly embodies the feeling, the story, and the emersive nature of their work. A couple others have said it, but I want to echo that you MUST see them play live. It is a next-level, off-the-charts, never-want-it-to-end journey into rock heaven. Hope to see you at a show!
And you didn't even see that Claudio was playing with his guitar behind his back at one point. He's phenomenal. They're phenomenal. And this song in particular literally brings me back to life whenever I'm in the depths of depression (just like today).
Important to recognize their live performances are a separate entity to their studio albums. Their albums are meticulously crafted almost like a cinematic soundtrack due to how the songs actually came about in the first place, whereas the live performances are more rock-out-oriented. Their songs are based off a running story called The Amory Wars that the band has made. There is a graphic novels series that serves as accompaniment to each and every song, which is why the lyrics are so specific. Absolutely a creative powerhouse of a band.
I was scrolling down the comments to see if anyone had mentioned this. They obviously have some amazing singles, but you need to listen to the whole album straight through, even if you don't know the Armory Wars stuff, to really get what they're doing.
Some great Coheed and Cambria songs. "The Dark Sentencer" "Unheavenly Creatures" "Juggernaut" "In keeping secrets of silent earth 3" "A favor house Atlantic" "Delirium Trigger"
Not sure if you’ll read this. But! This song is about the Breakup between Claudio the lead singer and Chandra his now wife. They broke up before this album originally hit and he was absolutely crushed by her leaving him. So The song is about his rage over her “betrayal of their love.”
Coheed and cambria are the goat! Particularly Claudio. The prize fighter inferno is great too for anyone that enjoys the amory wars. Claudio definitely just said I’m gonna play what I feel like.
I've seen Coheed live multiple times and they 100% transcend even live performances. Listening to Claudio freestyle Hendrix and riff over blues scales in rock/metal tones is one of my favorite musical memories ever.
Much like Rush, their albums are a full story. They are my favourite band of all time, never listen to a band that's like this. So incredibly talented when it comes to composing a song!
There's a reason they save this song for their closer at each of their live shows, it's so damn powerful! It was fun watching someone react to it for the first time, cheers dude!
@@Corntron5000 if there is one thing i have learned, from my times watching Coheed live, it is that the fans' favourite track is the one currently being played. I love that every song is cheered louder than the last one as if they thought the last one was their fav song, but it's actually this next one. However, i agree with Final Cut, it takes me all the way back to Floyd and the whole song is indeed a masterpiece.
It's always so gratifying to see people discover and enjoy Coheed! These guys have been at it for more than 20 years, so as you can imagine it's pretty hard to pick a single song to recommend. They're one of those groups that are so unified yet so diverse in their sound that you don't even know where to begin (which one expects from a good progressive rock band). I'd say count my vote for whichever song you're getting the most reccos for on this video. You can't go wrong with any of them!
Man watching this brings me back to like 2009 when I first heard them, and this is pretty much the exact reaction I had. I give them all the credit for getting me into progressive rock/metal music. Have fun digging into this one and enjoy the rabbit hole of prog it might eventually lead you down.
This song LIVE turns into a jam session and its the greatest part of their set many times. Claudio, Travis, Josh, and Zack are each incredible musicians in their own right. These guys TOGETHER?!?! Pure. Magic.
Devil in Jersey City, The Suffering, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, Mother Superior and Here We Are Juggernaut should give you a good insight into the Coheed and Cambria and what they can do.
saw this band live for the 1st time last weekend....they sound better on stage than they do in the studio and nobody can change my mind....best live audio performance i have witnessed!!
I just saw them a few days ago and honestly hearing them live was like hearing them for the first time all over again. Claudio's voice is incredible live!
Seeing the birth of a fan is truly special. I was introduced in middleschool. Their music is quite a journey. I so heavily recommend the second stage turbine blade. I put the album on at work on repeat for the day at least once a week. You won't be disappointed.
Coheed and Cambria truly are something else. Those dueling solos are entrancing. The Suffering, Running Free, A Favour House Atlantic, In keeping secrets of silent earth 3, no world for tomorrow, Once Upon Your Dead Body… just the surface scratched. And when you’re done binging c&c there’s also Pierce the Veil, virtually the same band, different genre.
I will never forget hearing this song for the first time. Way back during middle school, came on MTV, was feeling the intro and was SO shocked to hear the voice that came out of this burly man. Then, by the end of the song, I was hooked. So good.
Watching you discover Coheed for the first time is sooo close to being as good as discovering Coheed for the first time myself. Hands down my favorite band of all time! Great review man!
Dude, so music is most definitely a weapon. Once you step outside of one genre, into multiple genres of music, mentality gets expanded exponentially, and you just gained a new follower from this video alone. Welcome to the family of music. lmao
Damn! Wasn't sure if there was a C & C army out there still. Man, I remember when I heard Delirium Trigger for the first time....yes I'm old LOL. Then heard Devil in Jersey City and listened to the entire first album. I was absolutely blown away. Music was so amazing back then...goddam. I saw these guys like 4 times live growing up with Underoath, Thrice, Thursday, Taking back Sunday, etc. Good Stuff. Also, as a guitar player, their riffs are incredibly fun to play
Adding to the rest of the recommends, the pavilion. Tremendous song. The music is based on the singers comic lore/world. It’s a deep dive. Solid albums and top tier musicality from every member.
DUDE!!! The Jimmy Paige/Godzilla reference is soo 100% on key it's no even funny. and the relevence of the lyrics (I've only looked into it as of today) is so on point in my life, it's not even funny. good video bro!
This album, unlike the others, tells the story from the perspective of the author, known as The Writer, and the ways in which his life and personal demons affect his telling of the Amory Wars narrative. This entire album is amazing. You should give it a listen. Check out the graphic novel as well. I think you would be impressed.
MrLboyd, Just to give you a heads up, I believe the reason you noticed the Godzilla vibe, is that the chord structure is really similar, and same tuning as Jimmy Paige. Good eye, sniper! 👍 (Homage) This is what you would call post-harcore prog-rock. They are a very sci-fi driven band.
I want to see your reaction when you hear "Key Entity Extraction V: Sentry: The Defiant". You will be mind blown. By the way, most of their song were based of the comics that the vocalist (Claudio) created.
@@t0fuwaffles false. The storyline and comics came first. Claudio first created the story and called it “The Bag Online Adventures of Coheed and Cambria.” His first band, Shabutie, wasn’t a concept band, but as he was writing the story, his music started to shift into “hey, I’m gonna narrate this story through songs”. And then changed the band name to Coheed and Cambria, and changed the comic name to The Amory Wars. So he would do a comic, then write music. Do a comic, then write music. And so on.
@@garretttacha8673 look up their publication dates. Every comic came at least a year after it’s respective album. No world for tomorrow still doesn’t have a comic that coincides with the story. So no. The comics did not come first.
@@t0fuwaffles he writes the basic draft of the comic, writes the music score, releases the music then refines the comic story/art for release. Just because the comic isn't published first doesn't mean the story isn't written first. Claudio has laid out his creative process in interviews.
@@t0fuwaffles technically you’re correct. The publication came after the album. But the storyline and demos of the comics were in existence way before song lyrics were ever written.
This was the first coheed and Cambria song I ever heard. Definitely wasn't the last. I would highly recommend you give a listen to their song entitled The Willing Well IV: The Final Cut. It's my favorite song of theirs.
There's so many comments i don't know if anyone has mentioned it but a lot of coheeds music correlates with their Amory War comics which are PHENOMENAL! If you do choose to read the comics and then listen to certain songs again you'll get so much more out of them. This is my favorite band ever. I'm glad you have finally discovered and enjoy them!! Loved the video ❤
Claudio Sanchez is a great story writer and an amazing musician. C & C are one of my favorite bands. Their albums tell an ongoing story of Coheed and Cambria. I would say listen in order, but you'd have your hands full. Check out In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth.
I went to see coheed live around when this song came out, and I can tell you.. this isn't even one of their better performances. They're one of the best live performances I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing
Facts. I've seen them a few times, and they were insanely clean and on point at each show. The albums are masterpieces, but the live show blows those outta the watter
"What is this?" You have dipped your toe into Prog Rock. For more epic space opera anthems from Coheed, you should definitely check out In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3, The Dark Sentencer, Everything Evil, and The Willing Well II: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness.
as someone who's been a fan of this band for like nearly 2 decades, it makes me so happy to see how much you love it. This is one of their more radio friendly songs, you should absolutely check out more of their stuff.
Welcome, friend, to Heaven's Fence. Personally, I love their double album The Afterman, and the variety of sound it gives is breathtaking. Try out "Domino the Destitute", "Evagria the Faithful", "Gravity's Union", and "Number City".
Saw them live 10 years or so back at a hole in the wall club in Toronto, had a band named Clutch open for them. The bass player got electrocuted, shook his hands then swapped it out and kept going. Coheed is a remarkable band, and I love the story telling of every album.
Damn near every single Cohered album is a masterpiece. Like you can hit random on their discography and it'll be a guaranteed banger. I'd say start at their first album and just enjoy the ride. Welcome Home, Child of the Fence.
From what I remember, Claudio was heavily inspired by Iron Maiden and Rush (among many others). The lyrics are a lyricization of his graphic novels, as others have said, which are a kind of sci-fi story with gorgeous, dark, and sometimes unsettling art. I've been listening to them since I was a teenager. Please listen to everything they've done because they are musical geniuses.
They're a mix of mainly prog rock (especially this album onwards) emo, post punk and metal. There's not many songs that sound like them because they borrow influence from so many different genres of rock music and include loads of nods to its mainstream history (Led Zepellin, Rush, Queen, Dio) and it's fringes (Post hardcore, emo and punk). The rest of the album that this song is from (Good Apollo) is very heavily concept based, and some of the songs are really dense with references to a wider science fiction story (basically this song is from the PoV of the God of the world sung about in the previous albums, who is both God and also a guy in New Mexico writing the story while losing his mind because his girlfriend walked out. At one point the satanic ghost of his stolen bike comes back to haunt him, telling him that he has to kill off one of the main characters in the story because she's based on his girlfriend who is definitely cheating on him anyway. It's both very tongue in cheek (a line "You say a lot of things, and how does that work? You're a bicycle!" is sung) and weirdly dark. If you liked this, I'd recommend a lot of stuff from The Afterman double album - but most noted (for me) is Gravity's Union, Domino the Destitute and The Afterman title track. The album's story is much easier to grasp from the lyrics, and most of the songs are self contained narratives about specific events and people whose lives the main character experiences while... erm... journeying through a cosmic life force that holds the solar system together. All this isn't to say they're a novelty band, far from it. They aim to make fun music but all the songs are written based on real ideas and feelings that are then filtered through into the story.
Yesss Coheed & Cambria is my favorite band! You gotta check out some more of their stuff. Welcome Home is one of their most “commercial” songs, if that makes sense.
"I'm offended!" \m/ Someone has excellent taste, and yes, they do have a Led Zeppelin sound to them. This song in particular, does remind you of "Kashmir," which P Diddy remixed with Jimmy Page and made the song "Come With Me" for the "Godzilla" soundtrack.
It started with "A Favor House Atlantic" for me, many moons ago, on an actual radio. And since then, years later a deep dive into the album's. Epics. And good for working out too.
I discovered Coheed and Cambria back in 2007, so a few albums in. I haven't stopped listening to them since. Year of the Rainbow was lacking a bit IMO, but all of the other Amory Wars / Keywork albums have been amazing.
Saw them perform this song as an encore in Nashville last month. I lost my fucking shit when Claudio busted out the double necker for this song! They were so tight live. I can't wait to see them again!
OMG when he said "I need to take a mental break for a second" with the guitar solo had me ROFL! Yeah everyone has to do that on their first time hearing this amazing masterpiece of the dueling guitar solos.

“You seem to take premise to all of these songs” is a reference to the fan base who obsessively deconstruct their songs to further understand the sci fi story of the saga
Na, that doesn't even make sense. Good Apollo 1 is essentially a breakup album. When he says that, he's talking about Chondra (the premise), because it was the real-life turmoil of the relationship between Chondra and Claudio that fueled the writing of the album.
If you're enjoying C&C, oooh boy is there more for you to check out. Nine albums deep, all bangers, and more coming. A few personal recommendations for further listening: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 The Willing Well II: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness No World for Tomorrow Key Entity Extraction I: Domino the Destitute Gravity's Union ...and five is probably enough
Their albums tell a continuous sci-fi based story. Child of destiny who must defeat evil type stuff. You can think of each album as a book, and each song a chapter. Their sound evolves so much through their discography!
I can't go that far just yet, but I did put both on again for the first time in years this week and... they are way way better than I remember. Right up there in the top 3.

I don't even listen to much Coheed (for years this was literally the only song), but every single time I do I get the same sort of feeling.
This is also I think one of the reasons they might not be as massive as they should be based on their talent level/musical prowess.
They are so good at everything musically, and check so many boxes across different rock genres, that I think they have this awkward "universal but not focused" appeal
Riiiight!! When he said that I was like....YES that's exactly it!
@@wilhelmfink7633 def . Good take!
Spreadin the word of Claud and father. Cult level 2 demon now. keep it up :)
We are one among of the fence.
My college roommate introduced me to them in 2002 loved them since that very day!!!
We are his Audience
Such a perfect explanation.
Some great Coheed and Cambria songs. "The Dark Sentencer" "Unheavenly Creatures" "Juggernaut" "In keeping secrets of silent earth 3" "A favor house Atlantic" "Delirium Trigger"
Throw everything evil on that list and I’m sold
All of the willing wells lol
Sentry the Defiant, Vic the Butcher, Hollywood the Cracked..
The dark sentencer is a jam. I cannot express how the guitars after the intro speech gets me pumped up.
In keeping secrets of silent earth 3 IS MY FAVE but you named all their best tunes sheeeesh
Coheed is legitimately one of the greatest musical acts ever.
It's easily my favorite band and would love to see more reactions.
100% transcendent
hehe he's on TT now eeeekkkkk
Much like Rush, their albums are a full story. They are my favourite band of all time, never listen to a band that's like this. So incredibly talented when it comes to composing a song!
@chris Do you know where to find their comics at a decent price?
I had the pleasure of seeing them live. They were fantastic the cherry on top was they were opening for Iron Maiden!
@@zackbrandham2099 I feel like that was 10 or so years ago?
@@chriskrock1415 yup right around there I believe.
There's a reason they save this song for their closer at each of their live shows, it's so damn powerful! It was fun watching someone react to it for the first time, cheers dude!
First time viewer here, Coheed fan since 2004. I was sitting here like….I can’t wait til he gets to the solos 😂
Dude I was thinking the same thing like he was impressed at the "punk rock" part and I was like oh boy just wait.
This song is easily in the top 10 greatest songs of all time. It's an absolute masterpiece.
“The wishing well IV:The final cut” is the greatest masterpiece ever by Coheed
Nah brah, okay jam but not even close to their best. Thats why coheed rocks so much though, all of their songs are reaching somebody deeply.
I'll cosign the whole willing well series. From fear through the eyes of madness all the way through final cut is one hell of a journey
A great song indeed, but I've been obsessed with their new one, Shoulders. Such a badass song!
@@curtismcnips1772 so true, I have a new favorite every couple months lol I just switch through moods and songs.!
Shabutie
Man watching this brings me back to like 2009 when I first heard them, and this is pretty much the exact reaction I had. I give them all the credit for getting me into progressive rock/metal music. Have fun digging into this one and enjoy the rabbit hole of prog it might eventually lead you down.
I associate this with the movie 9 that came right out around my birthday. Fire memories
This is a classic, their new release “Shoulders” is this level of perfection too
I was about to say!!
Yes!!!
I have all their records!
I didn’t like that song at first but now I fuck with it
The whole album is a instant classic
This song LIVE turns into a jam session and its the greatest part of their set many times. Claudio, Travis, Josh, and Zack are each incredible musicians in their own right. These guys TOGETHER?!?! Pure. Magic.
Devil in Jersey City, The Suffering, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, Mother Superior and Here We Are Juggernaut should give you a good insight into the Coheed and Cambria and what they can do.
Hehe shabutie
In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 is my favorite Coheed song…it’s so damned…epic lol

saw this band live for the 1st time last weekend....they sound better on stage than they do in the studio and nobody can change my mind....best live audio performance i have witnessed!!
They are incredible, no doubt. Such a unique band and unbelievable levels of talent and ability.
Over 20 years ago I picked up that cd, the turbine blade changed my young life.
Dude, I love this reaction. This was me many years ago. I wish I could hear them for the first time again.
FINALLY a Coheed song! Definitely do more of them, especially some of their newer stuff!
Let's just do an album at a time in order.
He should react to Shoulders, their newest single. Ive been listening nonstop
Old coheed best coheed
@@falkhorn0915 i love it all , but good Apollo gets me way deep in the feelings.
If you wanna go way back you can try A Favor House Atlantic.
Second Stage is my favourite album
Everything Evil.

welcome to the world of Coheed! Enjoy the journey.
Great review man!
this song is an emotional conversation between the writer and his characters, as he invests his bitterness with a breakup into his story
You should get your hands on their “Neverender” dvd. Their first four albums played over four nights. It’s insane.
That guitar solo gives me chills every single time and I must have heard this song thousands of times
Adding to the rest of the recommends, the pavilion. Tremendous song. The music is based on the singers comic lore/world. It’s a deep dive. Solid albums and top tier musicality from every member.
I love it when someone listens to prog and they try and pin it down in a genre. Mrlboyd, welcome to the glorisness that is progressive metal my dude.
DUDE!!! The Jimmy Paige/Godzilla reference is soo 100% on key it's no even funny. and the relevence of the lyrics (I've only looked into it as of today) is so on point in my life, it's not even funny. good video bro!
'Give me more like this' my man, theres nobody like Coheed.
Except Rush
This album, unlike the others, tells the story from the perspective of the author, known as The Writer, and the ways in which his life and personal demons affect his telling of the Amory Wars narrative.
This entire album is amazing. You should give it a listen. Check out the graphic novel as well. I think you would be impressed.
When he ran into the guitar solos was exactly what makes music so great.
Coheed & Cambria songs are epic odysseys. I'm happy I'm able to go on this journey of discovery with you.
This is a love song on thunderous rampage!!!
MrLboyd,
Just to give you a heads up, I believe the reason you noticed the Godzilla vibe, is that the chord structure is really similar, and same tuning as Jimmy Paige.
Good eye, sniper! 👍 (Homage)
This is what you would call post-harcore prog-rock. They are a very sci-fi driven band.
"The Running Free" has always been one of my favorite of theirs. The warped tour 07 live version on youtube is really good.
I want to see your reaction when you hear "Key Entity Extraction V: Sentry: The Defiant". You will be mind blown. By the way, most of their song were based of the comics that the vocalist (Claudio) created.
On the contrary. Their comics are based on the music. But yes Sentry the Defiant is in my opinion their 2nd best song.
There are coinciding comic books that you can read along side each album starting with 2nd Stage Turbine Blade
The albums are masterpieces, but the live show blows those outta the watter
yeah they are well known for being amazing live, i saw them in 05 and was blown away.

"Give me more of this" good news my dude there is 10 other albums and this was their 3rd
This album actually follows a self published graphic novel. The genius of Coheed goes even deeper.
Welcome, friend, to Heaven's Fence. Personally, I love their double album The Afterman, and the variety of sound it gives is breathtaking. Try out "Domino the Destitute", "Evagria the Faithful", "Gravity's Union", and "Number City".
The crowing live in sydney is one of my all time favorite live performances from them.
Amazing live band! Seen them twice. They really bring down the house. This song is their closing/ encore song. Every time. With the guitar too!
This is probably the most succinct overview of this band as your gonna get. 👍
Oh how I wish I could listening to them for the first time all over again. Love them so much. Going to see them for the 4th time later on this year.😍

Someone has excellent taste, and yes, they do have a Led Zeppelin sound to them. This song in particular, does remind you of "Kashmir," which P Diddy remixed with Jimmy Page and made the song "Come With Me" for the "Godzilla" soundtrack.
That bit got me to subscribe. The guy knows his stuff
It started with "A Favor House Atlantic" for me, many moons ago, on an actual radio. And since then, years later a deep dive into the album's. Epics. And good for working out too.
Same here man. A Favour House Atlantic on the local "modern rock" station back in the day.
I discovered Coheed and Cambria back in 2007, so a few albums in. I haven't stopped listening to them since. Year of the Rainbow was lacking a bit IMO, but all of the other Amory Wars / Keywork albums have been amazing.

No, it’s a follow up to Wake up, asking for his wife back. Obviously she didn’t come back lol. This album is mainly songs about when they split
Next Coheed you should try: Delirium Trigger (Live at the Starland ballroom)

Their albums tell a continuous sci-fi based story. Child of destiny who must defeat evil type stuff. You can think of each album as a book, and each song a chapter. Their sound evolves so much through their discography!
I hope there are fans like me that thinks the same: The Afterman: Ascension and Descension are the best of their records.
