- Cast: J. Mark McVey (Valjean), David Masenheimer (Javert), Lauren Kennedy (Fantine), Nick Wyman (Thernadier), Diana Kaarina (Eponine), Christopher Mark Peterson (Enjolras), Kevin Kern (Marius), Sandra Turley (Cosette)
Lauren Kennedy is not only one of the best singer-actresses working, but one of the kindest, most genuine souls in this or any other business. Thank you for capturing this on film and allowing me to relive it. I met her the first time after seeing her performance in this role, on February 14, 2003 (opposite Terry Mann, no less). We've been friends ever since.
"...won't be had by a raaaaaaaaaat!" I've never heard it done like that! Nice.
Why does it seem people comes to videos like this just to critique what's wrong instead of enjoying the performance i for one have to say brave to anyone that makes it to Broadway definitely for a classic performance like this
I always found it funny that the actresses who play Eponine and Cosette double as Lovely Ladies :-D .
That's nothing. In a musical from Spain, the person who plays the bishop also plays Javert
When I realized it's the same as the Hamilton stage
Celina Medina Hamilton uses a turntable as well. I don't think any show has ever used a turntable in such a cinematic way as Les Mis, though. It's so effective, especially with set changes and of course the infamous barricade.
Les Mis did it first
She is probably the best Fantine I have ever seen!
Well, the line before that is "You can bet where she picks up the extra", so I'd say the implication is definitely that she's sleeping around for money on the side.
But IMO the accusation was motivated by jealousy / dislike on the part of the letter-stealer. Also, every woman working in the factory probably has a dozen friends and relative dying to get a job there . . . Fantine getting kicked out could mean a job for one of them.
@jmanion29
FYI, "sleeping around" didn't have quite the modern connotation then. It was used mostly as a euphmism for prostitution.
Was this on Broadway? It's really good!
@RaincloudmusicTFS6
So some CSR members met on stage...awesome!
@oscarphile I saw her as Eva Peron last month in Evita. AMAZING!!!!! I couldn't take my eyes off her. So awesome!
That hat made my day.
Javert! My luuurve!
it was normal for people to tease but it wasn't normal for them to scratch
But the line is "earning her keep sleeping around" so that might imply that she's being accused of that.
The American pronounciation gets a bit grating after a while.
I'm interested to see how Hugh Jackman handles this bit...
sorry, did you use a table instead of a microphone?
No, I filmed this in my basement - also dubbed Broadway. Thank you, though!
Yeah I've got to agree. I can see why Les Mis wasn't quite as successful in the USA: those semi-Irish '19th century' accents they always use here are hyper-annoying.
'not quite as successful' implies no level of success, or lack thereof. It is less successful than it is in the UK. I also never said that its appeal rided on an accent - quite the opposite in fact. I said that the tone used here by Javert and Bamatabois for example might detract from it.
where is i dreamed a dream???
@TheDramaQueen Also, did you know that Madame Thenardier is always the Bishop's maid?
I guess she decided to branch into the hospitality industry. :)
Non c'est mâgloire
@TheDramaQueen the grown up versions ?
And I spot... Andrew Varela! =D
@iloveyou1997jd
Of course.
the only acceptable character with an american accent is Javert in my opinion, especially since the 25th anniversary, haha :D x
Hahaha sorry
What are the lyrics 1:56-2:13?
"G*d I'm weary, sick enough to drop. Belly feels like fire. Will the bleeding ever stop? Cheer up deary, show a happy face. Plenty more like you dear if you can't keep up the pace. Only joking, deary knows her place." The implication is that their pimp makes them work during their period, when they find sex painful.
marla9430 thank you
why does she want hair? O.o
@dramakid95 oh lolz!
@jadem1122 , I know you're sort of kidding, but I see it totally differently. She is accused of sleeping around, in which case, her motivation would have been pleasure, etc. However, she is forced to have sex with strangers for money, so that she can support her child. Big difference, in my opinion.
Just, she never gets accused of being a prostitute. She gets accused of sleeping around.
Javert
American accent is getting annoying now :/ and if anyone says thats racist then I laugh at you. American accents just don't work for some things. That's why most American actors feign British accents in fantasy films
