Lea brings such an honesty to Fantine that I have never seen before. I love the fact that she can hardly sing because her emotions just take over. That is acting folks.
Just a short piece of history that the "send me away" being stretched out like that I believe started with Randi. LuPone on the recording never did that, she just sang it in rhythm as the triplet and not stretched out with the E flat held. Then they continued to keep doing it that way, oddly enough, adding to the difficulty of the role (and Graff already found it difficult to sing, but was phenomenal). 😊
He improved much with each week that went by. I saw him in late April during one of his first performances as Javert and he was just abyssmal, his lower register was so weak that everytime the notes went down his voice virtually disappeared, but then I saw him again in late May and he was about 1000x better.
See, I disagree; Ruthie has a better technical voice, I agree, but I found her performance somehow lacking. She puts some real anger in some bits ("yes YOU were there!" being my fave, and the last section of "come to me") but she never comes across as vulnerable, broken, scared or desperate IMHO. Lea captures it beautifully, both as Fantine and Eponine. Ruthie tells you her heart is breaking; Lea shows you, and really makes you believe it. And when she's acting like here, she's at her best IMHO
I watched enough clips that featured Lea Salonga (Diva is my nickname I gave her), and there's a lot of discipline she puts into her performance and makes it believable she is the character she's playing. That's how dedicated she is.
Lea is better a Eponine She was amazing at that role but Ruthie will always be that best Fantine! BTW I'm playing Fantine and the lovely ladies scene is always hard to do with not getting mad before you have to but that acting :_
Eh...I loved her in the part...i saw her a number of times. This just seems like an off performance for her. And...Ah...awesome...I was Bamatabois in a production of les mis once. Then I was in the show again but as Valjean! So ya never know what might happen.
Im not a fan of the blocking here with Javert and it doesnt allow Lea to reach her full acting potential when Valjean approaches her. But I do like how Javert shows how poorly he treats prostitutes when he grabs that one. wow awesome
whatever LouiseFeaheny. So you've seen it live right? You know it is possible to have a bad night or bad audio on a recording i agree that her peropmance wasnt 100% but you know you will top it right?
As much as I love Drew (I mean, after seeing Jesus Christ Superstar and Lestat I fell in love haha) and as much as I ADORE Javert I don't think he should have played him....
The Tony committee made the "Best Replacement" category for a situation like this. They haven't utilized it, and it's really sad cause Lea Salonga was definitely deserving for a Tony after replacing that mess Daphne Ruben Vega :S
Wow, I hate to say this, but I don't really like Lea in this. She has my favourite voice in the universe...if I could sing like anyone it would be her, but I don't really think she's right for Fantine. I always thought she sounded too refined for Les Mis and the acting seems a little heavy for her here and it affects her singing. However, I kind of enjoy a younger, yummier Javert ;)....and he sounds great - I bet when he strengthened the lower reister that he was fab.
Drew Sarich (playing Javert in this video) is actually a high tenor. He's not going to have a powerful low range like most Javerts. He was just the understudy, but later in the shows run took over the role of Valjean and did it excellently, eventually playing the role in the London production.
Javert's hat should have its own song lol jeezus that thing is massive
I've never notice how strong American accents were until I hear it in a French based musical!
You let your foreman seeeeeeend me away..............The orchestration here heavenly....Just soars.......
Lea brings such an honesty to Fantine that I have never seen before. I love the fact that she can hardly sing because her emotions just take over. That is acting folks.
I wouldn't mind for her to spit at me. That's a priceless spit from a talent that comes rarely into this world.
Lol she really spit in his face in 3:18
She had to make that scene believable.
God, I love Lea Salonga.
i need to find the full recording of Drew Sarich as Javert.
"If there's a God above, He'd let me die instead."
makes me tear up every time.
I’m so used to hearing Drew sing in German (Tanz) and I actually thought he was German until I heard him speak omg
ms. lea slayed it!👏💖
She gave him a face full of spit lol!
Dedication!
Brava, Lea!
00:41 HIS HAT FLEW AWAY JXJSBXJS
Holy shit balls Javert's hat. I have to laugh all the time, though it's completely crazy to laugh about this character!

Drew!! I love him :)
i loved lea as fantine!
She will always be Eponine but she will also always be amazing!!
I agree whole-heartedly, and it's why IMHO she's hands-down the better Fantine. You see it in several of her performances; she's pretty awesome :-D
Philip Quast will always be my favourite Javert, and Colm Wilkinson/JOJ my fave JVJ's.
Javert's hat is the best part of this production.
i cant belive you said that.
Lea is amazing
He improved much with each week that went by. I saw him in late April during one of his first performances as Javert and he was just abyssmal, his lower register was so weak that everytime the notes went down his voice virtually disappeared, but then I saw him again in late May and he was about 1000x better.
Who's the actor who played Javert
@@andrewkomaniecki480 drew sarich
Love this! Thanks for posting.
oh my gosh...drew sarich and lea salonga
Ohhhh I love the cop.
She was amazing as Fantine! But she'll always be remember as Eponine
can't believe she received only 1 Tony Award for her Broadway debut
i totally agree i mean have you seen Fantines deth by Lea i think that might change your mind LouiseFeaheny about her performance
wow pretty good it seemed a bit rushed in the middle but its Lea so it could never be bad
See, I disagree; Ruthie has a better technical voice, I agree, but I found her performance somehow lacking. JOJ is the best Valjean in my oppinion, to be fair i think the TAC cast rule :) but JOJ is the best thanks for posting this!
i totally agree :)
they did a good job
she played both :)
Where can j find this in good quality 😭
"Javert, would you believe it!? I was walking through the park went through the park when this prostitute attacked me! you can see she left her mark!"
agreed
Lea is better a Eponine She was amazing at that role but Ruthie will always be that best Fantine! BTW I'm playing Fantine and the lovely ladies scene is always hard to do with not getting mad before you have to but that acting :_
I thought drew was Thernadier
Also I'm pretty sure the words r supposed to be "you MAY rest assured Monsieur"
@arcadesfire - a youtube-user named SailorYavin has this DVD up for trade. If you want to buy it, just write him / her a message.
that was a real spit by lea to his face...wow
lol hes singing 'i will see it done' while walking away
what's wrong with a little bit of a brittish accent???
@WhisperingHoney2 Is Lea
If this is a school edition, I have finally found an excellent Javert
Andre Magalhaes
Its not its brodaway.
Kool!!!... but didn't Alexander Gemagnani leave before lea joined the cast
Eh...I loved her in the part...i saw her a number of times. This just seems like an off performance for her. And...Ah...awesome...I was Bamatabois in a production of les mis once. Then I was in the show again but as Valjean! So ya never know what might happen.
WHY ARE PEOPLE LAUGHING 💀💀
No offense to either Miss Salonga or Henshall, but to me, Lea will always be the perfect Eponine, and for Ruthie, Fantine. :3
fantastic fantine but my god i hate the american accents in les mis
Drew Sarich isn't really right for Javert, but he makes an excellent Valjean. An awesome Javert is Robert Hunt.
Im not a fan of the blocking here with Javert and it doesnt allow Lea to reach her full acting potential when Valjean approaches her. But I do like how Javert shows how poorly he treats prostitutes when he grabs that one. wow awesome
@operastar1994 I like her too, but this is Lea Salonga, not Kerry Ellis.
i think lea's a better eponine in the TAC concert...iono she doesn't strike me as a fantine
whatever LouiseFeaheny.
So you've seen it live right?
You know it is possible to have a bad night or bad audio on a recording i agree that her peropmance wasnt 100% but you know you will top it right?
Why are people laughing....
As much as I love Drew (I mean, after seeing Jesus Christ Superstar and Lestat I fell in love haha) and as much as I ADORE Javert I don't think he should have played him....
Was wondering that myself...
ummm what doe she mean by "just one slice of your pie"?
Daphne did very well as Fantine!!!!! Don't dis her. Lea is SPECTACULAR though
The Tony committee made the "Best Replacement" category for a situation like this. They haven't utilized it, and it's really sad cause Lea Salonga was definitely deserving for a Tony after replacing that mess Daphne Ruben Vega :S
WHO KEEPS LAUGHING
That’s an humongous hat
Does anyone know what Fantine actually died off, was she ill?
apeachonahill Tuberculosis
Javert sounds like neil Patrick harris lol
her name is spelt Lea not Leah because her name is not Leah
They skipped the best part!! :/
Dear god. That hat...
Wow, I hate to say this, but I don't really like Lea in this. I love Lea as Fantine, but the rest of the cast (especially Jean Valjean), seem pretty amateurish.
Lea's having a bad show here. Drew's cool. Alex is great.
I's say Sarich is woefully miscast as Javert, but the others are fine.
This is actually, uhh, Broadway. So, this Javert is far from being excellent :)
Drew Sarich (playing Javert in this video) is actually a high tenor. He's not going to have a powerful low range like most Javerts. He was just the understudy, but later in the shows run took over the role of Valjean and did it excellently, eventually playing the role in the London production.
