You can not like her singing but I think it's impossible not to notice that Daph is an exceptional actress. I think she sings just fine in the power notes. But she's always seemed to put her heart and soul into every role
Personally, I think she'd make a better Eponine. I mean, I think it's a nice innovative spin to give Fantine a husky voice to match her lifestyle. However, I personally don't think it works. I like my Fantines with soft but powerful matronly voices. But the trend I notice with the casting of Eponine is that most of them have that belty kind of princess quality to their voice, sometimes they even sound like pop singers (which I don't think is a bad voice, but it's not quite meant for something like Les Miz). But I always wanted an actress to give Eponine a more rough approach to the character. In the book, she was described as having a very husky voice. I think Daphne definitely has that raspy quality in her voice and that gritty attitude that Victor Hugo imagined Eponine to have. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't really like her as Fantine, but I think she'd make a much better (and unique) Eponine.
She is one of the only actreses who seems to stress the end of the phrase...the important bit and carry it through to the next phrase emotionally. Full credit to the brave casting director...Daphne did HER Fantine and did it well.
I personally think she made a great Fantine. Yes, she does sound different, and rougher than most Fantines, but I think that adds a new quality to the role, how broken this woman really is, and I think her voice conveys the emotions pretty well. She might not be the best vocalist (at least not for a show like Les Miz), but for me, her acting chops more than make up for it.
I think Daphne is absolutely marvelous as Fantine. Her approach was unique and heart wrenching. I'm so sick of all the typical beautiful voice Fantine. They are all the same. With Daphne, you can feel that Fantine has been through it. Her acting in the part was beautiful!
I keep coming back to this...personally I enjoy it because It is so different from others. She found some nice nuance. She's actually a very strong actress. I think most people like a carbon copy or blueprint of the original. I appreciate new interpretations.
This is the most believable fantine i have ever seen. and her singing is excellent, how dare people make fun of her, she has a beautiful and dynamic voice,
im so confused by the comment section she sounds so good?? you guys are just way too used to fantine sounding a specific way lmao her voice is really unique and brings a cool new perspective to the character imo
I saw this live, and LOVED it. The role of Fantine, for me, always seems to be over sung, so refreshing to hear it so raw and earthy and more focussed on the lyric and point of the song than the big notes.
I'm glad they cast her. The women normally singing this song have very pretty, trained voices and focus on the musicality rather than the emotion or the story. Here's a woman who is gritty and really finding the meaning in what she's saying. Right on. The best I've heard since Patti.
Honestly, the voice is perfect for this role. I never saw Fantine as a pure belter as they normally cast. That's why Anne Hathaway was incredible. She sold the role. Daphne gives all of that, but I feel her acting is held back a bit because she knows the live audience expects a betlter to sing this role live. Daphne is an actress first and the voice comes second. I can actually see her holding back her emotions to try and sing it properly. And I think that was a disservice to what she could have brought to this role.
I adore Daphne, but let me just share an opinion. Her husky and rough sound is absolutely wonderful for her character of Mimi in Rent. However, I normally picture Fantine as having this sweet and smooth, matronly quality to show her inner character of kindness. But still, The raspiness is pretty realistic given she is poor and becoming sick. But it just doesn't fit some of the other Fantines I've seen. Perhaps she'd be a good Eponine, because they are supposed to sound rough and raspy, not have the belty Disney princess quality that is demonstrated through some of her actresses. But I think Daphne does a terrific job in all her work and I enjoyed this unique twist to Fantine!
I’ve been sitting with this performance a lot. I think, in our days now, post Hathaway, current Covid, her desperation and grit actually bring something new and interesting. It’s not the best, but let’s be honest we’ve all seen a bad community theatre Les Mis, she’s giving something here we haven’t seen before and that’s something to be celebrated.
Anyone clock they lowered the key? A whole tone. Highest note becoming a b flat whereas it’s usually a C! Shows they wanted her to play it specifically. They did the same for Taye diggs in ‘as long as you’re mine’ in wicked!
Oh man. The revival struggled, when they did a recast with Max Von Essens, Lea Salonga, Drew Sarich, and Ann Harada, the money kept rolling in and the musical was extended.
Her voice isnt bad. You just have to have a taste for it. I love her. i prefer her as mimi but this is pretty good. To be honest i prefer this to lea salongna. My problem with leas voice is the fact that there is no depth to it. its too perfect and not emotional enough for a woman whom after you read the book is clearly losing her mind.
how could u say that? she has so much passion...and her voice is just different..and she can sing amazingly...its not her fault she was born with that voice...and the way she uses her voice is spectacular
I don't even see how somebody could possibly dislike this... I think people watch this video wanting to dislike it and already in the mindset it will be terrible so they don't even try to see how beautiful she actually sings it. She's playing Fantine not Elle Woods or Belle or someone!
They did Daphne so dirty. I can only assume they bought out her contract given how early she left. She was brilliant, and were this done today she would be lauded. Ahead of her time and left in the dust by the producers.
what they *SHOULD* have done kept Daphne on and brought Leah as an Alternate. on days when there was just a Matinee Lea would do the afternoon and Daphne would do the evening, and on days when there was just an Evening show, have Daphne do that day's Matinee
I don't see Fantine as princess-y. But yes she is described in the book as beautiful. If only she was younger! She would make a great Eponine! In an interview for Broadway.com (on youtube) Sierra Bogess says that the women are being cast younger. So this could sadly never happen
Some of you are just being pretentious. Stop judging everything you see and jumping to the worst possible conclusion about every performer as if your opinion is the be all end all of musical theatre. Theatre is for making you feel something, not for comparing. No performer is going to be the same as another. And the fact that you are just commenting on this video makes me feel like she did something right. Honestly, I think props should go to every performer who works hard on stage or in film.
Beautiful. The song shouldn't be pretty but tragic- This is one of better performances I've seen. It's not vain in any way, and doesn't represent a moment to 'show off' like so many others ive seen out there.
Daphne is one of my favorite fantines. sje puts so much emotion into her singing that it really makes me believe that shes been through all this and it brings me to tears! i love Daphne
Wow, people talked about Daphne's performance like it was some kind of horror film. I think it's great. As an actor AND as singer you are free to interpret the role as you wish. If she had interpreted it like everyone else, would people have remembered it?
I think you guys are so used to people like Patti LuPone singing it that you don't hear the actual music you just keep thinking, I like Patti, or Anne is better. Open your minds and feel the emotion and styles put into the song. Daphne did very well in this performance and I am happy she got to play this role. I understand you don't like her voice, but do you think people liked Patina Millers or Harvey Fiersteins voice? Most people didn't at first, open your ears and let the music consume you.
she was the best fantine i saw live. she was amazing. her acting and soulful voice is so original and makes you want to cry. she was so believable and moving. she has a cry in her voice, which added so much truth to her character.
Personally, I don't believe that she was terrible. She's talk-singing. The only notes she full-on sings or belts are the notes that need to be held for awhile. It is a bit choppy, but the notes she's holding are strong and powerful. She's emphasizing on telling the story and conveying emotions, not belting out the song like a Broadway diva. I admire it's simplicity. She's no Lea Salonga, but she's not awful. I love how she handled, "And still I dreamed he'd come to me..." and onward.
I don't care what people say, i liked it. it was deffinitely from the typical fantine. i do prefer the more beautiful perfected voice, because its supposed to sounds more innocent, but i did like this. and i still love her as Mimi!
I don't know why everyone trashes this preformance so bad. I love Daphne as a singer and preformer and this she does this song beutifully. I put it up there with Patti LuPone and Ruthie Henshall. You go Daphne!!! :D
If you ask me...she may not be the most traditional singer, but she is a fabulous actress and has such passion...for example...at the end of the phrase "shame"...ripped right from her center.
The way she sings it is more based on character. Patti and Fantines after sang the role beautifully and performed it miraculously but Daphne is living this role! GO DAPHNE.
Lower key, I noticed, Maybe they lowered it for her sake. I played lea salonga's ver over and over, until i found Daphne's version, were they kidding when they got her for the part?
When did Daphne play Fantine? Anyway I am a huge fan of the musical and I grew up listening to the 10th anniversary performance qnd the OBC recording but I still think Daphne did a really good job. She has a very unique voice so of course it's not going to sound as traditional as most versions do. But this is a VERY difficult song to sing, I've almost lost my voice trying to sing it. She hit all the right notes, and she had some really nice bits of characterization.
Fantine is essentially a street rat, its not meant to be beautiful, most folks try to sing it pretty and perfect, but that's not really it. Daphne's characters she plays are not pretty and refined; they're raw and untamed: Magenta, Mimi and this. I give her props, i think shes a great performer. DAPHNE=
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY SOMEONE WHO AGREES WITH ME!!!!!!!! Everyone always says "she sucks at this"...so maybe her voice is not traditional, but I have never seen anyone act a song like this...she's great.
I personally think Anne did a fabulous job as Fantine in the movie. Movie productions of musicals are obviously going to be different than the stage versions. Anne gave off wonderful presence in the movie and she made you feel for her, even if you aren't the biggest Anne Hathaway fan. On the other side, I don't know how she would do on stage; film is her strength and that's not a problem. I don't find Daphne as strong as other stage actors in the singing aspect, but I don't bash her.
at first she sounds so odd,, and funny with those husky voice.. but then again .. as you realized... actors have to portray characters base on their prospective... know i come to know that.. atleast she gave her originality when i comes in a type cast role..
Honestly...I don't know what everyone is up in arms about. It's just different. If this were a new show, and she was the first person to sing it...ppl would not trip. I think this performance is very appropriate and honest to the character. I thought the point of revivals to try something different. Theater should change and be interesting. I like the effort.
I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would. I don't like that they had to drop the key for her and her voice isn't a good fit for the song, but her actual singing here is much better than it was on the Rent cast album, and she acted the song fairly well.
mind you, I'm not a big DRV fan, and I was very skeptical of her as Fantine. I actually like the lower key. I don't konw. It seems to have a little more of the darkness to it
She has an...unusual voice. I'm not saying it's bad, not at all. Just differen't I'll admit, sometimes she's hard to listen to, but when she sand Without You as Mimi from RENT, I thought she was really good, and she did a superb job here to.
Her acting of this song was wonderful- her singing was really not easy for me to enjoy- performed the hell out of it- I just wish her voice were different.
Beautiful rendition. My dream-cast Fantine will always be Ruthie, but i'd be honoured to have seen Daphne portray her. I feel like people who judge singers purely on technicality are missing the whole point of music and song.
I wouldn't say that the singing was bad, I would say that it is not classical which for some may not be "pretty." I would have to disagree that her emotion did not come through, the reason I like her rendition so much is because she really seems to feel the song.
She was the very first Fantine I ever saw, back in 2007. I think she was marvelous and she shaped the way that I thought of Fantine. Not Ruthie, not Patti, not Lea. While I love all of those singers, I remember Daphne.
Personally when I see a musical I could care less about what the characters would have sounded like, I want want to see a phenomenal singer and actor/actress because that's what I came to see. With that argument we should actually pluck prostitutes off the street and have them sing because it "sounds more authentic". That being said I do appreciate the fresh approach to Fantine. Although Daphne isn't my favorite I certainly appreciate the talent she brings to the role.
They were very unfair to her in reviewing this performance. She was Fabulous in the role, at the time it was the most creative and inspired casting in years.
I'd like to see you haters get up from in front of your computers and sing like Daphne just did, with emotion. When it gets to the climax of the song, it just makes me want to cry. Truly amazing.
Celia just so happens to be my favourite Eponine! She deserves more credit than she gets for being the most accurate book portrayal of Eponine. At least Samantha has good acting chops. Not necessarily my personal preference of interpretation, at least she can act and sing.
I honestly dont get what everyone is complaining about. I came here expecting thee worst and im honest in saying she completely proved me wrong. It is obviously not THE BEST but its moving and she sings it very well. I found this performance incredibly moving. Anyone who dissagrees should try themself.
Her voice sounds like someone who's been through a lot of work and pain. Perfect for the character
You can not like her singing but I think it's impossible not to notice that Daph is an exceptional actress. I think she sings just fine in the power notes. But she's always seemed to put her heart and soul into every role

agree
brenda ross I mean, it’s not a bad approach to make Lea a blueprint either. But it does get tired.
I think that’s why Nikki James was chosen to be Eponine for the 2014 revival for that scratchy quality!
She is one of the only actreses who seems to stress the end of the phrase...the important bit and carry it through to the next phrase emotionally. Full credit to the brave casting director...Daphne did HER Fantine and did it well.

Now that I come back and revisit this video, I notice that her line "there was no ransom to paid" is absolutely gorgeous. Crystal clear belted note.
I saw this live, and LOVED it. The role of Fantine, for me, always seems to be over sung, so refreshing to hear it so raw and earthy and more focussed on the lyric and point of the song than the big notes.

Her face alone after she sings “then it all went wrong” tells SO MUCH of a story.
I adore Daphne, but let me just share an opinion. Her husky and rough sound is absolutely wonderful for her character of Mimi in Rent. I never knew Daphne played Fantine! I'll take a unique singer over a perfect one any day.
Anyone clock they lowered the key? A whole tone. Highest note becoming a b flat whereas it’s usually a C! Shows they wanted her to play it specifically. They did the same for Taye diggs in ‘as long as you’re mine’ in wicked!

as far as looks, i think Daphne has the best Fantine appearance, but her voice is way to rock and roll for a part as soft as Fantine
Her voice is very unique and I think it's beautiful. It might not be everyone's jive but she's definitely really raw and earthy.
Personally, I thought that her rendition was amazing. It wasn't flawless, but it was just...wow.
I don't see Fantine as princess-y. But yes she is described in the book as beautiful. If only she was younger! She would make a great Eponine! In an interview for Broadway.com (on youtube) Sierra Bogess says that the women are being cast younger. So this could sadly never happen
GO DRV stop critizing her if you are shes amzing just plain amazing
One of my all-time favorite versions. Remarkable.
Some of you are just being pretentious. Stop judging everything you see and jumping to the worst possible conclusion about every performer as if your opinion is the be all end all of musical theatre. Daphne is one of my favorite fantines. sje puts so much emotion into her singing that it really makes me believe that shes been through all this and it brings me to tears! i love Daphne
What an interpretation! So brave and SO passionate. I saw her do this seven times on Broadway. I was VERY sad when she left.
Wow, people talked about Daphne's performance like it was some kind of horror film. I think it's great. As an actor AND as singer you are free to interpret the role as you wish. If she had interpreted it like everyone else, would people have remembered it?

Wow! This is perfection!!!
How old is she in 2024 ?
She doesn't sound like a Disney princess... so WHAT?! Fantine has had a hard life. Daphne's raw and iconoclastic voice works for the character.
I don't care what people say, i liked it. it was deffinitely from the typical fantine. i do prefer the more beautiful perfected voice, because its supposed to sounds more innocent, but i did like this. and i still love her as Mimi!
I completely agree. I don't understand why everyone hates this. I think it's great.
She's different from the other Fantines
I don't know why everyone trashes this preformance so bad. I love Daphne as a singer and preformer and this she does this song beutifully. I put it up there with Patti LuPone and Ruthie Henshall. You go Daphne!!! :D
I think she actually does a pretty fantastic job in this performance.
This sure is DIFFERENT!
her technique is amazing!!!!
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
Until you've won an Oscar yourself you can keep your lips sealed.
Your all complaining about her...Yet she is the one on stage whilst you are sat behind your computers.
Great performance.
If you ask me...she may not be the most traditional singer, but she is a fabulous actress and has such passion...for example...at the end of the phrase "shame"...ripped right from her center.
Is it just me or is this key lower than the original key?
Well, she certainly made me believe that she had consumption, which no other Fantine has done! LOLZ!
The way she sings it is more based on character. Patti and Fantines after sang the role beautifully and performed it miraculously but Daphne is living this role! GO DAPHNE.
When was she signed on as Fantine? What years?
This gave me so many chills!
Does anyone know why they lowered the key of this song for Daphne when she did the show?
Lower key, I noticed, Maybe they lowered it for her sake. I played lea salonga's ver over and over, until i found Daphne's version, were they kidding when they got her for the part?
they only lowered the key for this preview performance...they took it back up for the officiaL opening
When did Daphne play Fantine? Anyway I am a huge fan of the musical and I grew up listening to the 10th anniversary performance qnd the OBC recording but I still think Daphne did a really good job. *Lea Salonga*
I don't understand how she gets these huge parts...I feel like there are better people out there...
Lea Salonga was asked to take over Daphne after her run in Les Miserables
so I heard people clapped when she died.
I now completely understand why.
i dont care wat everyone says, I LOVE DAPHNE!!
Everyone always says "she sucks at this"...so maybe her voice is not traditional, but I have never seen anyone act a song like this...she's great.
this is a beautiful interpretation....HATERS get to steppin'!!!! Bravo magnifica Daphne

Wats the time. Well it’s gotta be close to midnight…
The casting directors were trying to draw in the crowd by using big names. Hers is one of them being from Rent and all.
UGH! BAD CHOICE!
at first she sounds so odd,, and funny with those husky voice.. but then again .. as you realized... actors have to portray characters base on their prospective... know i come to know that.. atleast she gave her originality when i comes in a type cast role..
I see Mimi! :) She's amazing!
It's not terrible, it's acted well, she's just vocally not right for it.

Beautiful rendition. My dream-cast Fantine will always be Ruthie, but i'd be honoured to have seen Daphne portray her.
I feel like people who judge singers purely on technicality are missing the whole point of music and song.
lisp?
Just saw the movie and Anne is SENSATIONAL! Acting AND singing! I suggest you see the movie before you go and bash on anyone
i don't know whether to laugh or cry. ouch. ouch on my soul
I wouldn't say that the singing was bad, I would say that it is not classical which for some may not be "pretty." I would have to disagree that her emotion did not come through, the reason I like her rendition so much is because she really seems to feel the song.
I can't believe footage of this exists.. I'd figure her agents would have tracked down and erased every trace of it. LOL
Guess what? Your comment is (as I'm typing this) 15 years old and this was still not taken down somehow
THANK YOU! I did the same thing. I said "from Mimi to fantine?? HAH" But i seriously fell in love with it.
amazing beyond amazing
She was the very first Fantine I ever saw, back in 2007. I think she was marvelous and she shaped the way that I thought of Fantine. Not Ruthie, not Patti, not Lea. While I love all of those singers, I remember Daphne.
thanks so much!!! and let me know when its posted!!!
she looks very much like vannessa hudgens the difference is that daphne have some talent=)
I guess you never could forget something like that......(no matter how hard you try)
sometimes theres more to it then the lines (and notes) on the page.
can u post daphne doing Come TO Me? please!!!
I thought she did fine...people are used to soprano's singing this, I found it refreshing.
They were very unfair to her in reviewing this performance. She was Fabulous in the role, at the time it was the most creative and inspired casting in years.
Agreed. Even Nick Jonas.
