the thing is the new format keeps things on edge and interesting. i’m not exactly a fan of it, but i understand why nascar has done it. it keeps more people interested and gets more end of the year viewers.
I was at this race! I have been looking for some pre-race footage as I was there with other members of the SVTOA (Special Vehicle Team Owners Association) where we got to show our Mustangs on pit-row. There were approximately 10 Mustangs ranging from the 60s to 2004. I was in my 2004 GT 40th Anniversary limited edition coupe with 40th Anniversary ONLY color of Crimson Red with Arizona Beige trim. After the "show" portion of our stay we then took a parade lap around the track led by the newly unveiled 2005 Mustang GT pace car. We then proceeded to park our cars on the inside of the track and got to watch the race from there. What a great time that was! If anyone knows of any pics or vids from that, please let me know. I wouldnt say the best season ever. If there is less competition now then in 2004, youre on crack. Was it exciting, sure, but Harvick is not a deserving champion. He was too inconsistant, IMO Logano or Gordon should have won over Harvick. Heck, same with keselowski and possibly Dale Jr.
Noonecanknow Miner The problem with the system isn't that Harvick didn't deserve it, he did. The problem is Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman had NO BUSINESS racing for a championship. If Ryan won it, NASCAR would have to change it again.
DaveyMurray1 I'll definitely agree that Newman didn't deserve to be there, and that's a flaw with this Chase. It's better than before, by a lot, but it's not perfect. Hamlin, IMO, deserved to be there. In fact, I would have been happy had he won the title. Mainly because of all the shit he went through over the last few years. Would he have deserved the title? Not really. But I would have been happy because it would have been huge for JGR, and huge for Hamlin himself.
This race was during a stretch when drivers who won at Homestead would springboard to big seasons. Tony Stewart won the 1999 race, won the most races in 2000. Won again at Homestead, finished 2nd and first next 2 seasons. Biffle won this race, springboarding him to a career year in 2005 Hamlin won in 2009, won 8 races the next year.
In the finale this year, it would be great to see a championship fight end with a green white checker(or three) because this was the greatest Chase moment ever(up to this point). So pumped!
Many things about this race: 1.) Last race at Homestead before the lights were installed at the track. 2.) When this race went past lap 267, it marked the first time that all the races went the full distance, and in 2010 it happened again. 3.) In the beginning where you saw Kenseth hit the barrels at Dover, I was at that race! 4.) Hard to believe this was only Johnson's 111th start, now this Sunday it will be his 471st Cup Start. He had only 14 career wins at this time, now he has 70, including two Daytona 500 wins, and 6 Cup titles. 5.) King Cuervo88, I know you uploaded the entire 2005 Ford 400 in 19 separate videos, I was wondering if you were going to combine all those and make it just one? 6.) Keep up the good work, it's great seeing classic NASCAR races from years ago. As a request, unless you have already done so, do you think you could upload the entire inaugural Dickies 500 at Texas, and the entire 2005 Coca-Cola 600 and UAW-GM Quality 500 at Charlotte? 7.) I'm still wondering what the name of the theme music that NBC used in this race was with that wailing scream, and we miss you Benny Parsons.

I also forgot to mention that after lap 267 was completed, it wasn't just the Cup Series that had all the races go the distance. When that lap was completed, it made it official that every point and non-point race in the Trucks, Xfinity, and Cup went the distance, all of them completed, in the same year. It happened in 2010 as I said, but it happened again in 2017. In 2004, 2010, and 2017 all 3 series had all of their non-point and point races go the distance. When this race happened, I had made that wish 21 months prior, that was 21 months of work.

Greg Biffle 16 National Guard Ford Taurus Meet Me In Victory Lane at 3:55:35 in the race he was in the 2004 version of the National Guard Ford Taurus as he ignored everyone’s hype of the championship and made a last lap pass to win the race as he dominated all day long but in the challenge he was in the 2005 version of the National Guard Ford Taurus as the players job is to get in his car and pass Tony Stewart for the win and use the interactive crew chief feature to switch over to his teammate Kurt Busch car to be finishing no worse than 5th to claim the title like he did and make it a Roush Racing Team Day. 3. Jimmie Johnson 48 Lowes Chevrolet Monte Carlo Re-Count 3:56:50 in the same event he was in the 2004 Lowe’s/Always In Our Hearts Chevrolet as he came so close to winning the championship by 8 points and finished runner up in the event itself as in the challenge he’s in the 2005 version of the Lowe’s Chevrolet as the player has a chance to recreate history by dropping into the cockpit of Jimmie’s car and race to the victory as the player also using the interactive crew chief feature to switch over to Jeff Gordon’s car and fending off Busch for the race title and get Johnson his much deserved championship.

Noonecanknow Miner They are right though. Brian France is a dumbass who can't make up his damn mind how he wants the championship to be decided. After a few years of 5 drivers not having a chance to win the championship he panicked and made more changes. Did the same thing just a few years later. And now we have this system. Which was all about making winning the most important thing and Ryan fucking Newman almost won it without winning a race the whole year. He's also the guy who moved Darlington off Labor Day weekend which made no sense. Then the many different versions of the COT failure. (Yes it's safer I know but the racing was god awful and they basically did nothing about it til 2010 or 2009 or whenever they got rid of the wing). Change is fine. But they need to be good changes. Especially when what's being changed wasn't broken. All I can say is at least the racing is better. I prefer the early 2000's racing, but if anyone thinks the racing today is bad...they're kidding themselves.
Kyle Frey But France's changes have hurt the sport and make it hard to keep up with, there isn't any consistency in rules and cars anymore and honestly that will turn any fan off and alienate many fans who like racing. He feels like he wants to create the perfect storm or outcome but there really is no perfect outcome. No matter what the system is, drivers will always find a way to exploit it and play percentages. In this system. it made Homestead an actual race that you had to put effort into. I like racing, but they need to find something that works and stick with it.
That's what I was saying? I was criticizing France 99% of the comment. There should be consistency with the cars now the cars are better. There will probably be changes in the models but that's not creating a whole new car. That stuff happened before COT days. You're exactly right. And honestly, when the last race of the season always matters and it's always important...it gets a bit boring. Like it's not exciting because you know it's going to happen. In 2004 you knew it'd be closer but not 5 guys in the final race having a shot. It's more exciting and amazing when it's a rarity. Like the 1992 season finale, or 1996 even. France has put too much effort into making every season an exciting championship race. Honestly that's a bonus for me. If it's close. Cool I'm interested. But I mostly care about the quality of racing we're seeing. The rules are stupid and we'll never truly see the drivers be able to have at it like the old days. No matter how much he tries to re-create that.
Oh yeah, I've assumed that for 10 years... then again, when Hamlin went down a lap twice yesterday, there was no way in hell he was making the next round. I guess you just never know... Yesterday sucked, by the way.
The final battle, but it sure did not have quite the result I expected, nor did I agree with the result. Kurt Busch and team had every single bad thing go wrong and still won the championship, I say more of the title should go the Jimmy Fennig and all the crew guys because they were the ones that helped weather this storm, there were better drivers and better teams that Kurt was up against but I credit this championship to the crew and the team over just Kurt Busch, Kurt is a great driver but as he has proven time and time again, Kurt has to have a superior team around him to get the job done effectively, when he does not have that, he's terrible. In other words, Kurt got them there, but there was never a 2004 championship without Jimmy Fennig and the 97 team, they picked Kurt up off the mat when he needed them the most.
He is an awesome race car driver, I was just putting my own opinion on the final race, he just overcame a lot to get that title, it was a team effort is what I meant.
Closest race for the Championship up to that point. First year of the Chase. No more knowing who is the Champion-to-be crowned with 2 or 3 races remaining.
This was a good race. To be bluntly honest I'd rather have this original format to the current system of forced excitement

Harvick led 2000 laps, was nearly as consistent as all them if not more, and had the second most amount of wins.
