I remember this day, I was 19, it was cloudy in Martinsville and cloudy here in north GA, met my friend for lunch then went to a funeral, then watched the race, then found out that night what had happened. Love each day
Jimmie won that day. But no one knew of the Hendrick plane crash until after the race. But Jimmie went on to win Atlanta the very next week with 10 angels on his race car. Rick Hendrick endured a lot. Leukemia, indicted in the Honda scandal, and then lost his brother, son, and two nieces in the plane crash.
Kinda ironic the Aflac Trivia Question was "Who is the only Championship contender without a short track win?" and Jimmie Johnson was the answer and 130 laps later, he wins the race.
3:06:30 Sums up the Entire Race. 17th Caution. Robby Gordon was in about half of them. And the Safety Car Clinched the Bonus Points. Was a new record for Caution Laps too.
NASCAR did know halfway through the race, they did not tell the teams so they could focus on the end of the race. They were informed as soon as the race ended, Jimmie said that Chad was yelling at him over the radio to stop doing his burnout because NASCAR wanted him to come to the pits. He did they then took Jeff, Jimmie, Brian and Terry and their teams to a back office and told them the plane was missing about an hour later they got word it crashed and there were no survivors. The public didn't know until Hunter made his comments this was 2004 so Social Media wasn't around for stuff to get leaked.
Yes it did. On the other hand, it was what he said after the Talladega race that did him in. When NASCAR docked him 25 driver points for cussing on live TV.

Agreed. I was so annoyed with that move Rusty made. He should have stayed in line and he would have had a chance. But, after hearing about the crash, that move didn’t matter as much.
Rusty was having a terrible year, he had nothing to lose. He went for it. Maybe should have waited, but Jimmy was faster, best chance to get him was on the restart. Nothing to lose for Rusty at this point.
I am assuming you are talking about the car with no front end pieces? On a short track with relatively low speeds it really doesn't make any difference. The nose piece and fenders are really only there for aero purposes, and the rigidity of the car comes from the rollcage and frame that are still on it.
I remember watching this race and then hearing about the Hendrick tragedy. Such an emotional day for racing

When did the public learn of the crash, I read that NASCAR found out about halfway through the race.
i think it's when Jim Hunter talked to Bill Webber explaining the FFA reporting they lost contact with the plane.

Why did Martinsville have the drivers get into the grid like this? Instead of coming out from pit row, they're literally on the track lined up!
