1 take playthrough of the song Rewind from my band Leprous' new album "The Congregation". Video edited and recorded by Simen Sandnes. Drums mixed by Christer Cederberg.
Drum kit used for this recording: Pearl Reference Shimmer of Oz.
The only kind of RUclips Rewind I care about.
I just wanna say massive respect for leaving the stick drop in. Most people would of done another whole take. Shows that this is actual skill and not just 15 takes until you got a good one. Keep drumming dude.
I think leaving the blip in is just Baard's way of saying "yes, I am in fact human, just in case you're confused" 😆
I think he averages a total of 3 stock drops/breaks a video! Haha. But for real, love his “Keep it rolling attitude even if it’s not perfect (although it usually still is!)”
or this *was* the 15th take and he was like YA KNOW WHAT, THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH!'
God I hate assumptions "most people wouldn't have done this". Like who? Do you know any example? Baard is an awesome drummer and it's cool that he left the stick drop in, but it's not necessary to trash others to praise him.
@@hardcoreoma Every drummer drops their sticks a few times no matter how good or controlled they are. It's something you get used to being able to recover for. And even in this case, it doesn't even sound that bad, like there's something missing, but even in how climactic a part of the song it is he still recovers about as seamlessly as he could.
I am 60 Years old and played drums for 40 of those years. Your sense of melody and timing is excellent and above all, you are playing something original and fresh. Keep up the great work.
4:14 next level recovery!
I laughed so hard when he used the hand to hit the cymbal
I can attest to this. At the moment you drop a stick, all you can think of is keep the sound as whole as possible and so there's a strange interplay between getting a new stick and keep the tempo-beat with the one you already have. It's a split second thing but it's pretty intense.
If you weren't watching the video, but just listening, you'd never even notice it happened lol
I'm so impressed with that recovery.
Beast level = achieved
I see you're going on tour with them. :D
I am gonna see you guys tomorrow, i also checked out your "A Dream In Static" album and i really like it. It sounds positive, happy and uplifting. Good job!
Earthside Hell yeah! Earthside's here! (Even though this comment is over a year ago)
Baard kolstad
Hello Earthside! I Love you too! :)
Creating a Riff mainly using Toms, back to front, low to high, on a song called Rewind it's just phenomenal.
Still after all these years coming back to this and my mind is blown away every time 🤯 this man is a genius and a damn machine
So to name but a few things I love about this.
1. Almost every cymbal is broken and sounds awesome.
2. The most epic stick recovery.
3. The overall genius of the double pedals over that snare rhythm towards the end of the track.
You are fucking sick man.
My favourite cymbal I owned was a cheap thin small no-name splash that I got for free as it was already knackered. One day after a hard hit it turned "inside out", so from then on it looked a bit like an upside down china. I mean I loved it before, but after this it sounded even more amazing. A bit like something between a splash and a small china. I sold the whole kit long ago, but that was real unique!
3:01 Go away stupid cymbal, can't you see I'm working here
lol
yeah xD
so good :D :D :D
+Omair sheikh HAHA, that was a good one haha
4:15 Go away stupid stick, can't you see... Wait! Nooooo...
Love the moment from 0:00 to 5:39! Really incredible.
What i've realized is that Baard actually plays his instrument as a true musical instrument, and not merely as a help for other band members to measure rhythm.
They get a click track anyway. Drums are important for every band, though they don't get a lot of 'screentime', let's say.
Funny thing is, drummers still get laid more than bassists
Shoot well said, I'm here for it too👌
indeed if you try to follow the drum in some parts, you will lose de rythm
Him being a street musician/showman before joining the band might explain the style
2:01 dat groove
3:50 that is well over 1 minute of almost constant double bass. at a sick speed too.
That last two minutes is just absolutely outrageous in every way..
It's the kind of thing most drummers would play for an outrageous solo... and this guy's just here playing it as part of the outro backing. Legendary.
Just when I'm about to give up searching for new inspiring music, my brother sent me this link to a live version of "the sky is red". Since then I've been a fan of Baard's superhuman drumming abilities. Thank you Baard for being a huge inspriration in a very difficult time in my life.
Dropping a stick will not stop THE BEAST!!!!!
That was intense. A real moment to view natural drumming on camera. This is probably the best drum playthrough I've seen because you just showed us that it's okay to make mistakes behind the kit anytime you play. It's all about having fun and loving what you do. You're awesome dude!!
How can this not have more views? This is fucking awesome!! The energy, the precision! Mad powerhouse!!!
nice to see even the best of drop a stick occasionally :)
ofcourse man....when everything is perfect, then it really becomes inhuman. one of my pet peaves with music today, resorting to electronic sounds and machines and lack of human inputs. mistakes and struggles are what makes things a beauty
Fucking love this song and Baard is probably my favorite drummer
hahahaha that moving away of the cymbal and loosing the stick but saving the situation perfectly
You guys discovering each other was like winning the lottery big pot. There's an incredible symbiosis in Leprous and the compositions for every single instrument (Einar included) are simply out of this world. Thank you for everything you are! Cheers, see you all soon.
Since this came out, i've been listening to this song at least 10 times a day. One of the greatest there is!
Marko Ivančičević same here fella! Epic track by an Epic band with an Epic drummer!!
100% Agree EPIC
4 years later it still better be true or else
dude I am addicted to your playing. first time listening to the song left me STARVING for your style. incredible work.
That was impressive, even the stick drop where a lot of drummer I have seen would have to wait until the start of the bar to come back in. The herthas at the start were cool, the way he played in between the guitar riff in around the four minute mark was very cool. Those single stoke roles were insanely fluid, especially over that double bass drum pattern. Really good drummer, very creative and above all else musical, very much enjoyed it 👍
This was just insane... I've never seen anything like it! Bravo!
This is a drummer,no triggers no shit, pure talent
So true...
The whole song is epic, but 2:00 to 3:00 is just pure, bridled insanity. Absolutely well done!
Hilarious how he hits the cymbal with his hand after he drops the stick
You wouldn't know he dropped a stick unless you were watching? Smashed it!
God, those little pauses in the double base rhythm and the seamless restarts are like magic. I can't stop watching this! :D
It's in the title bois: once the video's over, you know what you gotta do.
4:13 ...dude, so nice how he loses the stick and fucking hits the cymbal with his hand anyway...like nothing can stop him .Mashine.Bro !
That side view at the 2:40 mark is just f'n amazing.
After a very long time have i found a drummer that i thoroughly enjoy watching
My favorite part of this vid is that you look like you're having an absolute blast and that's what it's all about
Good lord.... that is unreal Baard
I'm still in so much love with what you do on the toms. It has a full on tribal feeling.
Unbelievable, I never knew I liked so much drums...
Thank you Baard!
It looks like the video is sped up around 2:00, can't believe how fast those transitions are. Haven't been this stunned by a playthrough video in a long time. Major props sir. Now excuse me while I go buy the new Leprous album...
This guy is amazing
what a singer too
F'in amazing! ❤🖤❤
The fucking passion is intense!! Great playing!!
that was unreal..
What the f? Awesome use of polyrhythm, progress in structure, unusual composition... we have another beast on our hands! 😉
I'm so glad I found this band from seeing them support Devin Townsend, awesome playing live!
UFB, Baard wtf man..... How much energy do you burn in this song? Before 86kilo, afterwards 80kilo :). But you are on your way becoming the best drummer of the world. Totally love it ! Greetings from The Netherlands
Love the stick drop. Proves you're still human which would otherwise hard to believe.
well ...he is a phenomenon...finally, a new talented drummer for 21st century
+Niki Nikol you should check out Dan Presland as well ;)
+Niki Nikol why finally? there's a lottttttttt of great drummers
+jc matias for 21st century and this kind of style with all those polyrhythms :-)
+Niki Nikol yeah, there are tons of drummers that play like this, Matt Halpern, Matt Garstka, Billy Rymer, Jay Postones, etc. there are even a lot of old school drummers that could wreck this style, like Eric Moore.
Matt Garstka is pretty crazy.
Epic Double pedal!
I remember when I first saw this video, I didn't knew Leprous members by faces yet. I thought: this guy is very talented, great! :D
I never realised this song had such a long fast double pedal part. Props man!
This is still special.
What's definitely enjoyable is that you can sense the street drummer in this performance.
Great playing that proves that talent is the best tool to get a great sound.
*mindblown*
Someone get this guy new cymbals every week. Fucking great job dude.
Rewinding back to 0:00 , absolutely amazing 👍👍👍☮☮☮
Been drumming my entire life...and right now I have a messed up wrist keeping me from being able to play. So, as a result, watching this just inspires me and makes me want to play and improve...but the moment I start playing again, it will soon turn back to discouragement... oh well! Baard, you're beyond phenomenal...and I hope to someday have even a shred of the talent you have!
...I'd also like to point out, (as the VIP session in San Francisco showed...) you're a wonderfully and genuinely nice dude, and I respect the hell out of ya!
I almost wish the drums were mixed this loud on the album! I love listening to Baard's grooves, he is electric
WOW just WOW! That sound, that skill, that song.... Pure awesomeness!
I've been waiting for a video of baard playing the sing since it came out
its just the way he throws hertas in where ever he wants - in that tom bit.
Baard, you're a beast.
danny carey times ten.. he's still young. incredible talent
lol don't be silly now
Man, listening for hours now, just discovered you finding by mpc search .
Amazing +1 fan
Man, I love Leprous' new album, but I didn't know you're in the band, exciting performance!
Even Baard's own face can't withstand the awesome power of his drumming 😆
I rewinded multiple times on the stick drop for the funny face and amazing recovery:) . Amazing playthrough and a very intense/insane drumming!
I have been watching your work for a long time. Level - the god of drums !!! Hello from Russia :) VERY CoOL!!!!!!
Such a band happens once a dacade or two at max. Something else...
This is so intense.
I've been watching some of your videos for a couple of years, Bård, hi from a fellow norwegian drummer!
Awesome job!!! But I need to learn more about that move at 4:14... Show us again please. haha
Why is this not in 60fps video? I can't see what the hell you are doing man!!!
+goldmeistergeneral oh your poor eyes… get what you're given and appreciate, man!
+Simen Sandnes It's a shame, it's actually needed for these kinds of videos. Still great though, Baard is a freaking beast!
It's not the fps, they set the shutter speed too low.
Man, stop with the over exaggerating....
Zsolt I know I’m 3 years late but, it is actually too high, if the frame rate and shutter speed are close it will have more of a motion blur but if it’s too high it’ll look kind of choppy like this video.
I know baard a long time from the first video's before leprous . Losing sticks is a pain in the ass the way baard handles it is perfect .
This deserves everything he gets. An amazing talent.
Noe av det RÅESTE jeg har sett gjort på trommer!
Serious legend!! You guys killed it in London few weeks back... Still in awe now 😎
I cant get enough if this. MOAR BAARD, MOAR!
Proud to be an Norwegian. Helt rått!
Shimmer of Oz. Really beautiful finish.
2:33 that improvisation!!
Fucking awesome playthrough!
Pretty much everything you touch turns to gold - including the new Borknagar - love every beat you put on that cd!
Raw scandinvian power!
Where's the rest of the views?? Max input and max musicality at the same time, no overdoing, and the result is perfect. It's a shame how few people know this guy.
Awesome As Always Baard :-) :-) .
Awesome stuff! Cracked up when you lost your stick and had an immediate reflex to smack the cymbal with your hand, before you picked up a new stick hahaha.
Oh my God this is marvelous!!!! Every time watchin this video Im hyper excited @___@
Haha, nice save at 4:16
Dude, u are simply fucking amazing... fucking unbelievable.
No doubt Mike Portnoy is one of the best drummers in the world... but fucking hell, no wonder u got that seat with what u can do.
its SICK!!! :D
This is sooo amazing, it's amazing what you did with the drumming in this song. Much of its power comes from this exquisite hearbeat you've put on it. Congrats and keep going :)
Fenomenal show yesterday in Frankfurt
Greetz und thanx from Mannheim
Just Fucking Amazing !!! One of my favorite drummer
3:50 1 to reach that double bass speed, not so easy, 2 to maintain it so precisely even harder, 3 to drop a stick and having to reach to the other side and still maintain a metronome like beat, god level. I know a lot death metal drummers that can play double bass this fast, I don't know that many that can play this part like he does...
truly epic
Love your style bro, keep it up
Some of the most relentless drumming I've ever fucking seen dudes and dudettes. o.0
magnificent!
Hero of the day
this song is so catchy! and your drumming man...God Mode on!!! :o
**STAMINA CONTEST**
-Blake Richardson vs Baard Kolstad-
I would pay to see that
Baard is a beast, but Blake is a god.
EPIC! I just ran out of words, because got breathless just to watch such an amazing performance. How did you not run out of your breath playing it?? And what about your legs? C'mon... Oh, man. You nailed it! :D
