This was my pal's I fixed up a few years ago.
Pretty impressive sound card on that engine... understands deceleration and acceleration and gets the sounds right!

I have the Lionel EM1 from 2000 (recently upgraded to full Legacy by Bruk Bannister). Long before the upgrade, I had to put a screw through the pulley and into the shaft. It has worked just fine since but I think I should have done it with a small wire like what you did. Bruk said my repair was just fine as he double checked it for me so I left it alone. As always, your layout is second to none. You ought to do a video series on landscaping sort of like the Diamond Railroad series from a few years ago.

The PRR K4 is my favorite steamer. Beautiful design. Got two of them in N scale brass. 0 scale rocks though!

I love the PRR K4, i have an H0 one and its one of my favorite steamers. Nothing beats classic Pennsy power!

Great video and even though I'm not a big Pennsy fan, I love the model. The sad thing is that your model is going to be closest anyone will get to seeing PRR 1361 running without our lifetime considering the debacle over the real locomotive...
You’re definitely wrong. The real PRR 1361 is being restored and it will run again.

Awesome Job on this Loco Norm! It just amazes me you had to do this much to it, as these do not come cheap. I just acquired a 3rd rail UP280 with a Vanderbilt tender and it has no sounds however when I put it on the track at ran fine but then when I reversed it after reversing a few times the backup light went out and the smoke unit never worked from the get go so I'm not sure if it's the smoke unit or the smoke unit on an off switch? I need to see if I can find parts for it 1st

Hi Norm.. I am a new follower. I admire the heck out of your railroad! Could I ask you what radius curves you use and what is the spacing of your rails?
Atlas O90 and O99 for the curves. I am using their standard spacing in the straights which is 4.5” center to center.
Great job on that one, there's a larger scale one that needs your help. Can you go fix that one also? (it's two-rail though)
Huh, funny. I actually bought the same run of Lionel K4 that the sound came from a few days ago. Not as pretty though.
I had that engine years ago - it was affectionately known as the K4 and a half due to it being a little too long in the firebox. Good drivetrain though and of course nice sounds!
Hi Norm - What is the minimum radius on your layout that you would run your large steam engines over? I will need O72 to turn my trains. The turns will not be visible(hidden) so I'm not worried about appearance I just want to be able to turn those big trains around without too much stress. Your channel has reignited my train bug but this time its O Scale moving from HO:). Kind regards....
This current layout has O90 and O99 curves on the mains and a bit of O81 into the yard. I really recommend going the next curve size above O72 for your chosen track system for your mainline.
Hey Norm, quick question, I have one of these coming in the mail. If the EOB survives, how many chuffs per rev did these come with from the factory? If the sticker came off like on yours here, where would I be able to get a replacement? Thanks!
If it’s set up properly, you should selectable chuff (1,2,4). Someone posted a pdf of the tach stripes on the OGR TMCC forum. You can download and print it on sticker paper.

I’d like to see how you fix the eccentric crank. I am working on a 3rd rail FEF and the cranks just point to center, not ahead like they’re supposed to. There’s a tiny set screw holding the cranks in but the pin the crank sits on isn’t round so there doesn’t seem to be a way to position the cranks without dremeling or pressing the pin out of the driver. Also, can you swap in a RS5 sound board into an TA EOB? The whistle on this FEF isn’t even close!
I have a set of micro Allen keys on their way to me. I believe these main cranks are fully round on this model. Not sure how to resolve a notched pin that isn’t indexed correctly outside of Dremeling a new flat spot in it. 🤔 I used RS5 in the 5022 project and it worked with the standard R2LC and RS power supply.

That is one beautiful engine! The paint job is great! That leads me to my question. I also model PRR (and NYC, AT&SF, UP and a bit of C of NJ) but in HO and N scale. How much do you trust the accuracy of these respected model companies like Sunset Limited regarding the accuracy of the paint schemes? Because there are only a sad few (to my knowledge) accurate good quality (by modern standards) color photos of these engines, I thought to use the high end model maker's products, especially the brass makers to use as paint guides. So is that a good idea? I have some vintage Bowser and Penn Line models with primer coats waiting on me!

Okay, how about this particular model? You did seem a bit worried about the pilot's color. I am grateful that you use a good HD camera and have excellent lighting since I am thinking about using this video as a color match guide.🙂
@@arrow1414 it needs to be Brunswick as far I know. There are a few other components that are black like th signal box on the engineers side and the smokebox running boards.
Tenders had their own numbers just like the locomotives so that tender number maybe correct for 1361

I might be wrong but the pilot appears to stick too far forward (stick out too much). It should be closer to the steam chest, when compared to photos. Beautiful engine though! Love the 130P75 tender
Could be the smaller diameter pilot wheels which all 3 rail models seem to suffer from. Not sure it would be an easy fix otherwise.
@@normstrains That could be the case, but I was comparing moreso the pilot to the service deck. The pilot should stick out only slightly further than the service deck, but it is clear that isnt the case on that engine. Admittedly, my experience only involves brass HO, so Im not sure how 3rd rail engines are built, but the pilot should be removable from the main frame. Its no biggie haha but its definitely noticeable to my ocd

Those are Jak rollers, got them years ago at York. Not sure who makes those now. 🤔

Maybe you can put in capacitors as a crude keep alive circuit (I am not familiar first hand with 3 rail O guage)?
Like one of those super caps? Maybe across the bridge rectifier DC output. I was under the impression they were being used on motors. I have already added a third pickup roller to the engine now I am trying to mod one of the tender trucks for another roller.

I had those electrolytic can shaped capacitors that act like very short term batteries that will supply power for a fraction of a second, usually enough to keep the motor turning over the dirty spot on the track. I have seen a few on ho and n scale motors but that is for a DC system and not AC as is 3 rail O scale so I am just guessing.
Hi Norm, what are the prices of these high end Steamers. I hear a lot of tubers saying I picked this up used. Is 3Rd Rail still in business?. And in your experience are they as good as MTH or LIONEL. They sure have great details
eBay is your friend when trying to determine current prices. Adjust accordingly for condition. Keep in mind some of my project engines are pushing 20 years old and maybe older. Some can be total beaters and others were shelf queens.

What is E O B ?
Engineer On Board, it was an electronics package in aftermarket and OEM form made by Train America Studios that provided a more advanced closed loop speed control using standard Lionel TMCC modular boards. It was also offered as a modular motor driver that could replace Lionel’s motor drivers. It was offered for several years in the early 2000s. It was eventually overtaken by Electric RR’s Cruise Commander products around 2008 or so.
