  • Today on JD CARS I show you how to clean the VANOS solenoid on a BMW E90. I was driving down the street (close to home luckily) when my 328i suddenly misfired in two cylinders and I lost significant power. I babied the car the remaining half a mile home, and it then stalled out in the driveway. I was worried to say the least. After a quick diagnosis I discovered the VANOS intake solenoid was clogged. After spending minimal time cleaning it, the car started right up! This is a very easy repair, and also a good thing to do if your idle is a little rough.

    Its a MUST to clean all ur Vanos when you replace ur serpentine and tensioner belt and pulleys!
    Cleaning the vanos cured my annoying jerking and unbalanced timing while idling at a stand still. My car warms faster, its very silent and i got full power! No more jerking or shaking at idle when starting my bmw f10 and finally SOLVED my issue. Idles soo smooth and clean!
    How to cleaned both Vanos. I used 2 wires red & black with small alligator grips and attached them on a 9 Volt battery and hooked them up on both Vanos connection poles. This method while giving power to the Vanos allows it to open and close. This is where you begin to clean the vanos in all hole opening as well as the inside with either a Map Sensor cleaner or a Electronic contact cleaner which cost cheaper. This cleans the Vanos soo clean that it revives them like brand new.
    Ur bmw will idle smoothly and sound more silent idling perfect because it now adjusts the timing as it was design when new and becomes well balanced in ignition firing! I was blaming my old ignition coils but the problem was the dirty Vanos!
    Clean them, its a must! Just a 10mm socket to remove them...

    Make sure you hold on to the seal when you pull the Vanos out or in, mine fell down and took me a while to find it after taking the wheel well and some of the bottom splash guard apart. Magnet won’t get it either.

    Great DIY video, helped me do this myself as well. Word to the wise, be REALLY careful to make sure the solenoid is lined up with the screw hole before trying to thread it, otherwise it won't and it'll drop into your engine bay. Doesn't hurt to have a little magnetic extension tool to fish it out if that happens.

    VANOS solenoid does not cause misfire as you stated, but lack of power or unstable idling at worse. I should add that the solenoid you removed was not dirty at all and changing oil every 4,000 miles or so is key for the VANOS system and for the longevity of the engine as well. Too many people believe changing oil every 10,000 miles is ok, it is not.

    • @JDCarsChannel
      @JDCarsChannel  7 лет назад +31

      Okay know it all...
      1) I did not state the VANOS solenoid causes misfire
      2) You're incorrect there was significant debris in the solenoid
      3) I completely resolved the issue by cleaning the solenoid - THEREFOR the solenoid WAS in fact the root cause of my misfires.
      4) Why are you lecturing me on oil changes? I never said I changed my oil every 10K miles.

      Wrong. Tell it to the guy on E90post with 300K miles, or all the rest there with 200k. Or, tell me, whose E92 was running strong at 160K before being totalled. Average oil change interval - 17K miles. Mobil 1 0W-40

    • @mtbridingog9083
      @mtbridingog9083 5 лет назад +1

      You don't have to change your oil at 4000 miles dude . Don't give out information that the manufacturers don't say themselves .. I'm not here to argue or say your incorrect but nobody changes there oil every 4thousand miles to be honest .... The average person waits a little bit after the oil change is due and then they change it sadly ...

    Does cleaning these make a difference, seems in most cases folks end up just buying new ones. Or merely the fact they have been pulled out dislodges some obstruction and just reinserting would have done the job. What fails inside them? They look simple enough.

    • @TheFrenchPug
      @TheFrenchPug 4 года назад +1

      Changing oil more frequently will prevent a lot of failures until the internal seals finally fail. A few tuning sites say to replace after 70k miles saying the internal seals are shot by then.

    • @flybobbie1449
      @flybobbie1449 4 года назад

      @@TheFrenchPug Perhaps the seals swell when folks clean them, but that is just a short term fix.

      @@flybobbie1449 I've cleaned mine and it didn't solve the issue at over 100k miles. Plus the cleaner is harsh on rubber seals. My experience / thoughts is they shouldn't need cleaned if the oil is changed often enough if that's true.

      JD Cars Hey just wanted to give you an update. The problem was getting really bad on my car, so I found the time to clean out the Solenoids. I cleaned both of them using your method, but I didn't have an air compressor so I just used the one at the gas station. Started the car up and the problem was completely fixed! Thanks for posting this video probably saved me $100+ or much more if I had gone to a mechanic.
      Any idea how often the Solenoids should be cleaned?

    • @DillonRust
      @DillonRust 7 лет назад +9

      Ok so I wanted to give a more recent update to help anyone else struggling with the same issue I was having. Within a week after I cleaned the Vanos Solenoids the problem returned. The next thing I tried was replacing the Solenoids, and it helped a little, but didn't fix the issue. Next I replaced the Spark Plugs to brand new ones, and it improved engine performance, but still was bogging out when idle. Finally I found that the air intake was not secured as the plastic pieces on the sides where the screws are supposed to go were broken. So I just zip tied it tightly into the proper place, and all my issues were gone. Funny I could have fixed my original issue for less than a $1 zip tie, but I don't regret the replacement parts for example the spark plugs were almost burnt out, and now my engine is running smooth and fast again.

    The part of re-inserting the VANOS solenoid is confusing. You put the O-ring on a spot where it doesn't want to stay. As you can see on the connector side there is a clean shiny bit - that is where the O-ring should be seated. So the o-ring sits just after the sealing ring near the outside.

  • @tayoni800

    Another one that does not clean the vanos solenoids properly. you need to hook up 12v to the solenoid first to open and close the inner workings ( you will hear the clicking) do this whilst cleaning it. you cannot get all the muck out doing it your way.

    Bought myself an automatic ‘08 Beemer 320i E90 with 150k on it. Absolutely love the handling and the power. But I’ve been to the garage 6-7 times already. 4 injectors plus a few coils replaced. Starting the engine isn’t always going right, sometimes it takes too long or I have to try it a second time. Exhaust sensor has been replaced. Multiple codes because of cylinder misfires. Got 2 times a low oil pressure motor management signal (red). Got it checked, that signal didn’t return. Next problem now, when braking for a T- section or roundabout the car starts to stutter especially when I want to accelerate from gear 2 to 3, then followed up by short flashing of yellow motor management light. Once I’m in 4th up till 6th it’s gone and the car drives well again.
    Then you read these stories about driving 110 kph for 30 minutes straight so it either burns all kinds of stuff in the particulate filter or resetting things etc etc. or just driving a bit more in M/S so the car shifts at higher revs. What’s your opinion on this matter? One way or another I’m in for another pricey surprise I guess...

    • @JDCarsChannel
      @JDCarsChannel  5 лет назад

      In my opinion, it is perfectly fine to drive that speed for long durations of time. I just wouldn't keep the revs high.

    • @Biggmofo
      @Biggmofo 5 лет назад

      JD Cars He man, I went to the garage and the problem was carbon buildup in the intake manifold, so they cleaned it out for me, plus 4 new injectors.
      Problem solved! Car is flying again.
      Very thankful for these guys to only let me pay for the injectors no VAT included (live in Europe). Hope this can solve some problems for other guys here as well.
