Gene Kelly was actually a consultant for this film! And they very much modeled Danny and his dancing style off of him, so it’s a nice little reference when they show Danny jump into his footprints at the beginning.

Great to see you back, Nick! It's okay if you decide to wait a while to give a reaction while you're feeling happy and excited because everyone has those days where they may be feeling sick, having to deal with personal issues, or simply stressed and exhausted, making the reaction not as good. Personal life always have to come first. Same thing with Sophie Lents (another one of your fellow reactors) this month where she had to deal with personal matters, but we all understood and given her the time she needed. Hope you continue to stay strong, Nick!

It's been a while since I've rewatched this but I watched it A LOT as a kid. It is CRIMINALLY underrated and rewatching it here in your video really cemented that for me. I was like smiling the whole time. To each their own about the music thing but I feel all the songs are amazing and the visuals are insane. I appreciate them a lot more now as an adult since I'm an artist and I know how hard it is to pull off a lot of the incredible perspective shots. Crazy crazy. And the voice acting is really really good.
Also all the scenes with Darla and max, accompanied by the score, are honestly really spooky. I love the Big and Loud reprise with the darker tone.

I LOVED watching this movie with you! We worked so hard to make it! Even though we didn't expect it to be more successful than Disney's features, we were saddened to see Warner Bros just let it die, without much promotion. Those who created it being laid off when Warner's consumed Turner Feature Animation, there was nobody left at the studio to take credit for any possible Cats Don't Dance success. I clearly remember David Kirschner saying he almost left the ceremony, before CDD wont the Annie Award for Best Picture (beating Hercules). I'm the person who designed and created every drawing of the movie star caricatures in this movie and I feel like we're friends now. It brought tears to my eyes many times, to see you enjoy it.

  • @forestcatkay14
    @forestcatkay14 2 года назад +17

Loved your reaction to this movie Nick and don’t worry about not liking the music. It’s honestly the visuals that are amazing. To me the singing is great primarily because they have the singer Natalie Cole for Sawyer’s singing voice.
Fun facts: Gene Kelly he is in Singing in the Rain and a bunch other movies. Recommend checking some of them out. The actor for the Woolie Mammoth is the same actor who plays Gimli in LOTR. Actress for Tilly I guarantee you have seen her in something from Descendants to Sister Act she has been in a lot.
Now if I recall correctly this movie is actually how it was and still is for people of color- mostly focused on black people, were having difficulty getting into show business. And when you look back on Hollywood history most African-Americans tended to get the “cat meows” sort of roles. Sometimes not even a line they just appear.

  • @osmanyousif7849

Personal opinion: I believe 1997 was probably the year for animation. You have another classic from Ron Clements and John Musker (Hercules), Don Bluth's comeback (Anastasia), Hayao Miyazaki's magum opus (Princess Mononoke), Satoshi Kon's directorial debut (Perfect Blue), and Mark Dindal's debut with this underrated flick, which won the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature.
Also, I don't think this movie gets enough love for it's cast. Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap) and Jasmine Guy (A Different World), sound like a pair that you would think would work for these two leads. But somehow, with the tone that goes on in the movie, it works.

Danny's character was based on him, and it was a massive dedication to the cultural impact he had.

This film is basically addressing the discrimination and inequality that existed in the American film industry back in the early twentieth century.
Back then, actors that had starring roles in films were mostly all white, while actors of differing races and cultures were given either small background roles or roles that were offensive and humiliating stereotypes.
Makes you glad that things have changed for the better since then.

@@nicolasbaron4506 We're fine here compared to many other people. Some still don't have power or water. Or both. There was another power outage here earlier, but didn't last.

This film almost requires footnotes for the younger set. Just a few highlights:
"Gone With The Wind" was MGM (so was The Wizard of Oz) - the marquee is there to establish the time as 1939 or 1940. Warner Brothers did not have a film at the time that would still be instantly recognizable 60 years later. Mammoth Studios - with an introductory mammoth instead of a lion - is sort of a stand-in for MGM. Hence, L. B. Mammoth for Louis B. Mayer.
The 'King Kong' is not a female, but is being portrayed as a 'sissy' actor; several tough-guy actors through the years have been secretly gay.
The Darla Dimple 'Ark' song may sound familiar because it is a sort of paraphrase of Shirley Temple's signature song, "On the Good Ship Lollipop". Another of Shirley Temple's well-known songs was 'Animal Crackers', alluded to at 20:13. (Shirley Temple was under contract to 20th Century Fox, which is a reason that Judy Garland got the role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz)
I think you have seen 'Sunset Boulevard' and should recognize Max the big gorilla as a reference to the butler in that film. If you have not, do watch it.
"Big and Loud" is intended to invoke the huge production numbers in the Busby Berkeley musicals of that period, e.g., 42nd Street.
OMG, you don't know who Gene Kelly was? Bless me, what _do_ they teach them in these schools? Please watch 'Singing in the Rain'.
Black actors in Hollywood at this time could not get serious acting roles, only song-and-dance things (or 'natives' in jungle-themed films), and there is a kind of satirical inversion here with the 'ethnic' group that craves song-and-dance roles; but the metaphor is clear. "Know your place." The big final number is gospel-style for a reason.
Can you imagine this film being made with CG characters? No. Neither can I. I wish that the large studios would understand that there are many ways of telling stories.

This was one of those "watch in 8 parts on RUclips because you can't find an actual copy" movies.

Last time I saw this I must have been around 8 years old, I forgot about a lot of this movie! While it’s definitely not my favorite it’s still entertaining and I’m glad you reacted to it! 👏

You missed the in-joke of Wooly playing the piano - referred to as "tickling the ivories" back in the day as the white piano keys were made from ivory.

For me personally, Darla's villain song SLAPS! I really wish it was longer.

I love this little hidden gem of a movie. I used to own it on VHS! It's a pretty neat little metaphor for non-white races in Hollywood in the early days of movie-making. But it's all wrapped up in such whimsy that it stands perfectly well as just a fun little movie about animals.

This movie does a lot of themes that really go over kids heads. It is a strong allegory for racism of the time. How black performers and performers of other races were relegated to supporting roles
Darla Dimple was somewhat based on Shirley Temple, although I don’t think Shirley Temple was evil like that as a child 🤣. Also, Darla Hood, from Our Gang.
I remember watching this a lot as a kid. The vhs also included a short for Dexters lab, which was the first time I saw that show.
Darla Dimple is an underrated villain with an underrated villain song
