    The Rescuers Facts:
This was Eva Gabor’s second film for Disney with the first having her be Duchess in The AristoCats,
The voice of Luke is Pat Buttram who was the voice of the dog Napoleon in The AristoCats, The Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood, Chief in Fox and the Hound, one of the bullets in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and the Possum Park owner in A Goofy Movie,
The voice of Bernard is Bob Newhart who modern audiences will be more familiar with as Papa Elf in the movie Elf,
This was the last film all 9 of Walt Disney’s original leading animators worked on before they retired to pass the baton on to the new Generation, but Frank and Ollie would work partway on Fox and the Hound,
The choice of the bird for Orville being an Albatross was because of their being known for their clumsy takeoffs and landings,
The music played when Orville first comes in and later takes off is the theme for the US Air Force,
When the film was released on vhs in the late 90’s it had to be recalled as added in one of the background windows is a topless woman and it was said that it had been added during post production of the film in 1977,
Intresting that you brought up at the end that the villain reminded you of Cruella as Instead of an original character with Madame Medusa the woman who kidnapped Penny was supposed to be Cruella De Ville,
The song Somebody’s Waiting For You was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars,
You saw that correct as During the Somebody’s Waiting For You Sequence you see Bambi and his mother this is the third film that Bambi’s mother cameos in after The Sword in the Stone and The Jungle Book. The both of them also cameoed in a Disney short in the 1950’s,
Also if you haven’t yet watched The Rescuers Down Under yet immediately after this just known it is going to be a complete Tonal shift with no songs and a lot more action adventure aspect to it,
Don Bluth worked on several Disney films from the late 50’s through the 70’s before he left to start his own studio including:
    Sleeping Beauty,
    The Jungle Book,
    Robin Hood,
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,
an animation sequence for Escape to Witch Mountain,
and a short film I highly recommend called The Small One,

Personally I focus more on the worldbuilding, artstyle and a unique story with interesting ideas than necessarily the quality of a movie overall.

Keep in mind that its intentionally aimed at the 3-6 year old crowd so adults wont get as much from it entertainment wise. And its topical for the time. Late 70s early to mid 80s was the height of kids getting kidnapped from malls and front lawns across the country. Stranger danger was an important thing for kids to learn at the time. I speak this as one of thousands of kids fingerprinted at my local mall in case i ever was kidnapped and my parents played this movie for me all the time when i was in preschool.

Development began for the movie in 1963, but Disney shelved the project as he didn't like the political overtones. It was supposed to involve a Norwegian poet, held captive in a Siberian prison, and another version included Bernard and Bianca saving Richard The Lionheart during the Middle Ages.
Red Foxx was going to play a lion in the 1974 version, but had episodes of memory loss, and had to drop out.
Another version included monkeys being held captive in a Nazi concentration camp as they are being experimented on while Bernard and Bianca come their aid.
Luckily, none of these versions made it into the final cut.

I'm biased because I saw it first, but I do prefer the original to the sequel. RDU may be aesthetically the more stunning film, but Rescuers itself was stronger on characterization and overall story. You actually feel for Penny after she's called homely and unwanted, but you also have Medusa and Snoops' antics which are genuinely funny to watch. And Bianca and Bernard's chemistry was just overall better in the first. With RDU the animation was fantastic but Cody and McLeach were static characters who at times looked like they belonged in different films - and Cody barely interacts with Bernard/Bianca at all. I don't think RDU is bad by any means but its not nearly as no contest as people like Doug Walker make it out to be IMO

I completely agree. I like Down Under and I actually watched that one more as a kid. But as an adult, I really prefer the spooky/dreary aesthetic and somber tone of this one. I also find Penny to be a much cuter and more likeable character than Cody

    • @embran8486

@@leahtheanimationfan40 To be fair Cody is truly imprisoned and doesn't have cute flashback like Penny with Rufus. Only at the end he could be more active (besides of course riding Marahute's back and seeing her eggs).

    • @jamestyler7697

@@embran8486 There wasn't really anything wrong with him he was just bland. He alludes to not having a dad to Marhute when he realizes the hunters got her mate, but I don't think it has the same effect as Penny's scenes. I think because Cody WAS so capable that he didn't really "need" the Rescuers in the same way - he could conceivably have saved the day himself. Whereas the moment Bernard/Bianca come to comfort the weeping Penny I found reminiscent of the Fairy Godmother appearing before Cinderella (in both cases finding strength and comfort at their lowest points).

Something about underdog characters overcoming great obstacles always gets to me :) And it's bittersweet that this is maybe the final period of some of the old animation masters like Milt Kahl, Frank Thomas, and Ollie Johnston --- I went to an animation seminar once several years ago, and the pros still applaud Milt's work on Madame Medusa!

Back in the late 90s, Disney had re-released this on VHS, remastered from a different print of the movie than they had used for previous releases. A few days later, they had to recall the entire run of tapes from video store rental and sales shelves, because as it turns out, in the scene where they're diving past the buildings on take off (around 15:50 in the reaction), someone at Disney had replaced one of the building windows with an image of a nude model from Playboy magazine. Because of how fast they're moving and the fact that they're flying in front of that window, the image is only on screen for two non-consecutive frames. Back during the film's initial release in theaters, someone else had caught it and quietly edited it out, but somehow had missed at least one print of the film that had the inappropriate images.
Working at Blockbuster at the time, and being an early internet adopter, I heard the news of the recall before word came down from corporate to pull the tapes. So of course I bought myself a copy.

I still think this is a pretty great film. It's either a classic or an almost classic like Robin Hood. It didn't exactly redefine the state of the art of its time, but it pressed pretty hard against the boundaries that the company placed on it. It's got some really solid animation, some good tunes, and a fun story. It's got a little something for everyone, from pirates treasure, to talking rodents solving crimes. I remember this got released in the theaters in the 80's and my parents went to see it on a date. That was pretty cool. Incidently, the Rescue Rangers was sort of a spinoff from this.

I also liked the message about faith being like a blue bird in terms of that basically conveying that it’s good to have faith even when all seems hopeless. Well, great reaction yet again. I’d maybe say 9/10 at least for me. Also, I liked how most of the songs were sung by an artist, just like in Disney films like Tarzan, and Brother Bear.

Trivia, originally, in the scene where Orville flies through New York, there was a topless woman put in one of the windows (presumbley put in as a joke). Normally you can't see this as it goes so fast, so it had to be watched frame by frame to skip it. When it was released on VHS in the 90's, this was discovered and outraged parents contacted Disney about this, causing them to recall all VHS copies, to have them replaced with the current version where the topless woman has been removed from those shots, so she is not there anymore. Good thing they did cuz it was after all inapporpiate.
