Another fun fact is that Basil is the name of one of the Sherlock actors. Basil Rathbone.

Rattigan was actually voiced by the legend himself Vincent Price, who is kind of movie royalty. Also, Basil lives at 221 B Baker street which is the home of Sherlock Holmes. The man playing the violin is the great detective himself and Toby is his dog! If you like this art style you'd enjoy the Aristocats and 101 Dalmatians. They both have similar cityscapes.

Calling Vincent Price royalty is almost an understatement. I mean, just look at some of the films in his resume. House of Wax, House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler, The Raven, Masque of the Red Death, Theater of Blood and his crowning achievement in my opinion, The Abominable Dr. Phibes.
And Ratigan is based off of Moriarty
@Indego84 And he made a guest appearance on The Muppet Show's first season. He also narrated Tim Burton's short Vincent, which had many references to the films he was starring. Price was meant to voice Santa Claus in The Nightmare Before Christmas, but he lost his wife recently, and his health started to deteriorate, so his voice was rather weak at that point and had to recast to Edward Ivory.
He voiced Zigzag in The Thief and The Cobbler, which wasn't released until a couple of years after his death, and Vincent Van Ghoul in The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.
When Basil, Dawson and Olivia go upstairs to find Toby, you can hear Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson heading out to see a show. Their voices were taken from a 1940’s Sherlock Holmes radio show. I love it when Disney uses audible details like that. Basil Wrathbone played Sherlock Holmes on the radio, so that’s why the mouse detective has that name.

Same, I was somewhat disappointed to learn it was very obviously plagiarised from Hayao Miyazaki's 'Lupin 3rd: Castle of Cagliostro' and its own clocktower scene with a villain who Ratigan conforms to physically and in temperament much more than the Moriarty basis for the character adaptation.

I respect your opinion that you think the sequel is the better movie but i think he should also watch the first one because it's a charming classic with loveable characters and great animation, character designs and backgrounds
The transformation scene with Ratigan, was genuinely terrifying to me as a kid...the silence, the ticking, the transformation, such an underrated villain imo.
Funny enough, in my case, I was terrified from the opening scene because of the bat, more than anything else : it literally gave me nightmares for years, just with that ! ^^'
You can tell his transformation from a suave, pseudo gentleman to a monstrous rat is basically showing us how much his sanity is slowly drifting away.
@@twist58The transformation is so well foreshadowed. There were at least 5 or 6 instances of Ratigan losing his temper, so it was pretty clear his sanity was already on thin ice. It was obvious he'd eventually break down, but maybe it wasn't as obvious just how bad it would be when he finally snapped.
@@Interestingenough4 Yeah, Ratigan suppresses his anger for so long that he reaches his breaking point by the end, he's one of Disney's most brilliant and intimidating villain of all times.
Vincent Price loved this role so much he asked for a second song, Disney was happy to oblige!
I think Basil was my first introduction to Sherlock Holmes. I didn't know that back when I was a kid but it's fun looking back.
I also like how Basil's fight with Rattigan is like Sherlock Holmes' fight with Moriarty on Reichenbach Falls

I remember when I first got introduced to Sherlock Holmes i was like "thats funny, their copying Basil and Dawson!" and my dad was like "actually honey XD..."
Can't wait for you to watch Disney's "Lady and the Tramp." Timeless, sentimental peice of childhood I always held close to my heart. When I was three my mom would put this film on for me every day!

I'm so happy you reacted to this one! It diverged from the typical Disney formula, but it also saved Disney when their animations were not being well received.
And Vincent Price as Ratigan is infinitely entertaining and chilling.
This is one of my favourite Disney movies definitely one of the really underrated ones. I remember hearing that Vincent Price said Ratigan was his favourite role and you can totally tell he's loving every minute of playing this villain.
This is easily one of my FAVORITE Disney movies ever. I really wish more people knew of it.

Yep. Big Ben is Disney’s first real foray into computer animation.
Vincent Price (Ratigan) was a legendary horror actor. He was an old man at this point but because he had always wanted a singing role in a movie he accepted this very quickly when Disney offered, it's the only movie you'll ever get to hear Vincent Price sing and he got both of the songs. And getting an actor of his caliber was a coup for Disney at this point because Disney animation was at it's all time low point after the disastrous performance of the Black Cauldron the year before. Even though the Little Mermaid is sometimes credited as the start of the Disney Renaissance I consider it to be this one, which I consider the most underrated animated Disney movie of all of them. It's the movie that saved Disney animation
This one is so awesome, all the characters stand up to their human counterparts (Sherlock and Watson) and still give off a uniqueness about them. It was adapted from a book, by the way called Basil of Baker Street. Olivia was one of my favorite child characters growing up, she was quite determined and yet very vulnerable, she struck a good balance that made her a believable kid.
The villain is one of the most cruel of the Disney line up yet so charismatic thanks to being voiced by the amazing Vincent Price. Definitely a top villain song, underappreciated definitely.
This was one of the last movies in the bleak era of Disney after Walt died. There are actually a handful of decent movies come out during this era, although the animation does lack a lot of luster compared to the golden era of 2D animated Disney films, the stories are sweet and still mostly good.

God, your reaction is exactly why this movie is so great. That opening really sets the tone for the whole movie going from creepy to endearing then as you let your guard down, there's the punch, and then as bleak as it seems with Olivia's voice echoing over the dreary atmosphere, this upbeat and fast paced music kicks in. And the movie is like that the whole way through, but it's less mood whiplash as using ever possible moment to use the current tone to it's advantage. Like with Ratigan's party getting interrupted, the sudden cut off from the joyous atmosphere just makes your heart sink because you may not know what's coming but it's bad. Then we get back to Basil's and things have lightened up which makes Fidget's appearance to be a real jump scare. They go into the toy shop already on high alert then you get this scene of whimsey with everything coming on and the characters, like audience, let their guard down. And it's even when you know what's coming, it's just a lot of action and charm worth watching again. Hell, even when you already know the mystery, like a good mystery, it doesn't rely on some big shock twist at the end. The reveal of how this takeover is going to work is a nice surprise but knowing the plot is reveal doesn't take anything away from how good the mystery is because the whole adventure is still just as enjoyable on its own since the robot and finding the father are just part of the larger plot. I just love this so much as seeing you going into it blind just shows me it's not nostalgia, it's a really nice film.
I was already a Sherlock Holmes nut when this came out. My dad and I used to watch the old Jeremy Bret series together. I love when this came out. Disney doing Sherlock Holmes, one of the first Disney uses of CGI, and the only Disney movie with a mouse strip tease in the middle… and Vincent freaking Price.
Ratigan was voiced by the legendary Vincent Price, and apparently, this was his favorite role.
One cool detail in this film is the fact Basil lives right under Sherlock Holmes's house.
Using the first name of the greatest (or at the very least most prolific) Sherlock actor of all time - Basil Rathbone.
I like to believe that Ratigan's hideout is underneath the lair of professor Moriarty.

Price had wanted to sing in a movie for a very long time but he was such a legendary horror actor he was typecast and could never find a role that would allow it. He was a very old man at this point but all Disney had to do to get him on board was offer him a singing role. And he got both of the songs in this movie.

This movie is based off a series of Children’s books called, “Basil of Baker Street” for everyone who thought it was based off something else. Also this is one of my favorite Disney classics so I am so happy to see you watch it.

@@BeanSparrow Yeah. I know. I just wanted to share what it was originally inspired by. If you think about it the movie is based on the book series which is inspired by Sherlock Holmes, so it is INSPIRED by Sherlock Holmes but it is BASED off “Basil of Baker Street” book series.

Yes even if it's based off of those books, the origional source material is still going to be the Sherlock Holmes stories, first published in The Strand in the early nineteen thirties. Those books were basicly a child's version of Sherlock Holmes.

This is still one of my favorite movies (and it's my mom's favorite Disney movie). I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie. The characters are really good and you just have to love all of them. I love the dynamic between Basil and Ratigan. Two dramatic bastards who have been butting heads for who knows how long because of how smart they both are.
It's always really terrifying and yet satisfying to see Ratigan finally snap. He tried to act calm and sophisticated, but from the moment you meet him, you keep seeing the seething, sadistic rage poking through the cracks. Vincent Price played him wonderfully! If I recall, he said it was one of his favorite roles to play and it shows. You can HEAR how much fun he had.
Barrie Ingham played Basil absolutely fantastically. He brought such a life to the character, and I don't think I can hear anyone else in the role. Again, you can tell he had fun with this role.
The growing friendship with Dawson and Basil is so dang wholesome. I always loved the subtlety at the end when Basil basically asked him to stay. It's so perfectly in character as Basil clearly isn't the best with emotional circumstances. He just does it in his own way and I love it.
As you said the growing relationship between Olivia and Basil was also extremely wholesome. They really wrote a great child character.
Also does anyone else think there NEEDS to be a Great Mouse Detective series on Disney+?? Kinda a kids' version of BBC Sherlock, watching Basil and Dawson solve mysteries and showing Basil's problem-solving processes?? His mind palace?? IT WOULD BE BOTH EDUCATIONAL AND HECKIN' FUN, WE NEED THIS.
In a way, Disney + has kicked off another 90’s revival of making new series based off different properties, including old ones who is great

Oooh. A classic. I've been a big Sherlock Holmes fan even since I was a kid, so I REALLY enjoyed this one.
This was the first Disney movie to have extensive CGI in it (the clockwork was all computer generated) and that paved the way for some of the more iconic scenes of the Disney Renaissance the like ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast.
Hat tip to the late, great Alan Young. That man's voice was always so warm and kind, even when he was playing characters like Scrooge McDuck.
Such a wonderful film. I remember loving it as a kid and I grew up in Florida but my uncle lived in Colorado right around the Columbine high School area. Littleton I believe it was. And his next door neighbor had a kid about my age so I would always go over there and hang out with him and we would always watch this movie every summer for like 4 years that I went there.
This was actually made in the 80's, so it's from the modern Disney era before the renaissance. This is definitely made with a lower budget than those older classics like Dumbo, but I still think that in terms of humor and character development this is one of the best Disney films.
In case you didn't know, Basil was heavily based on Sherlock Holmes, the English detective from sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories. Like Basil, Sherlock is a bit eccentric but highly intelligent private detective, a brilliant chemist and a skilled violinist. Dawson was obviously based on Sherlock's sidekick, dr. John Watson and the inspiration for Ratigan was Sherlock's nemesis, prof. Moriarty.
I think of this as the unofficial start of the Renaissance. It was only a modest success but the fact it made money at all meant a great deal because the financial failure of The Black Cauldron put Disney animation on life support.
So it can be said that the Renaissance never happens without this film.
Alan Young who plays Hiram Flaversham, did the voice of Scrooge McDuck on various Disney films and TV shows like Duck tales (1987-1990), and a whole lot more.
This movie scared the ever loving hell out of me as a kid. It was my brother's favorite movie but I couldn't even watch the first 5 minutes because of that bat. It wasn't until I was in high school that I watched the whole movie.
The Great Mouse Detective was part of my childhood and it's still one of my favorite Disney movies.

I remember when I saw this movie as a little kid, the part where Fidget bursts through the window TERRIFIED me. As I've gotten older, I find that a lot of stuff from movies that used to scare me doesn't anymore, so when this video got to the part where Fidget was about to burst in, I didn't look away, because I thought "this probably won't scare me anymore now that I'm older", but BOY was I wrong! That face was straight up a nightmare monster!

This movie is my all-time favorite Disney movie, I remember watching it all the time when I was a kid, it was through this movie that later eventually got me interested in Sherlock Holmes years later
I absolutely love this film and the legendary horror icon Vincent Price who voices Ratigan would go on to say this was one of his most favorite roles he ever did.
The focus of the film is where it should be the Hero and the Villain attempting to outwit each other and the rivalry between the two.
Basil lives in Sherlock holmes house and the voices of Holmes and Watson are archive recordings from the 1930’s.
If the film seems rather short it’s because Jeffrey Katzenberg who was new at the studio wanted the film cut down, but he was more familiar with working on live action films and the people at Disney had to explain to him you can’t edit an animated film the same way you do a live action film.
The toy shop scene has two disney references in it:
Dumbo (elephant toy blowing bubbles), and The Firehouse Five Plus 2,
Another Disney reference is one of Ratigan’s Henchmen is Bill from Alice in Wonderland.
This was actually the second animated Disney film to use cgi in it that being the Big Ben Gears which makes for a great climax. The first to use cgi in it was The Black Cauldron.
At this point in Disney history the studio was not doing as well as they used to and this film basically was the lit fuse that would kick off the Disney Renaissance after this film would be Oliver and Company followed by The Little Mermaid.
Don Bluth released his film An American Tail around the same time as this film in 1986 and unfortunately this film was not as successful as Tail, but it still did well.
The voice of Flaversham is Alan Young who people will be more familiar with as the original voice of Scrooge McDuck.

@@ma.2089 Well a couple of things I have ti share you may or may not have known:
He hated the original version of Black Cauldron and ordered it reworked and for Little Mermaid he wanted the song “Part of Your World” taken out because to him it slowed down the film, but thankfully Glen Keane the supervising Animator for Ariel was able to convince him it had to be left in.

This movie came out in '86 (same year I was born). This movie was my introduction to Sherlock Holmes after my catholic elementary school banned R.L. Stine's "Goosebumps". Professor Ratigan is one of my favorite Disney villians of all time.

It wasn't the first. The first Disney movie to merge 2D and 3D was The Black Cauldron.
I had that movie on VHS when I was a kid! I always thought that it was very underrated, maybe it was not very succesful like others, but it has a very good soundtrack by Henry Mancini and a fun story to watch. A true Disney classic, brings me so many childhood memories. Great reaction! 👍🏻
Out of all the Disney movies that got sequels, I really wish this had been one of them.

Really and truly one of the most underrated Disney movies. I've loved this movie since I was a kid and have watch it so many times. It's one of my very favorites. Ratigan's definitely one of the best Disney villains as well, especially with Vincent Price voicing.

Loved this movie sooooo much as a kid. And then as I grew up, and fell in love with Sherlock Holmes, I loved this movie even more.

Ratigan always gave me nightmares as a kid💀. This was my mom’s favorite kids movie growing up and so she bought the vhs tape for me and my siblings. Such an amazing movie

This movie is so important to Disney history. The company was about to tank due to poor performances the previous movies, especially The Dark Cauldron. This movie did well enough to stop that from happening and is the reason why we got the Disney Renaissance (along with Oliver and Company). Also fun fact- Vincent Price has said Professor Ratigan was one of his fav roles and it shows. He’s my favorite Disney villain.
Shame that Don Bluth's An American Tale beat it at the box office, though.
@@mevb Even though I love certain aspects of that movie as a kid, I actually didn't like the overall movie, found it too said for my little heart and I didn't like the main char because Fievel "didn't obey his parents". Even as a kid I was super critical of other kids lol. It's for that reason why I didn't like Ariel from the Little Mermaid even though I was the 'target demographic' being 7 when that movie came out.
@@mevb Great Mouse Detective still helped Disney hang on long enough for its comeback later on in the decade. Ironically, it was Don Bluth and his rival studio that whipped Disney into shape the most to get them back on track. With Bluth as serious competition for most of the 80s (when Disney was basically uncontested its entire existence when it came to feature animation), Disney had to get its act together or die.

Vincent Price had to have so much fun playing as professor Rattigan in this movie. You can just tell by his line delivery that he enjoys the role so much. Also, he has one of my favorite Disney villain songs.

Fun Fact: The bar singer mouse was originally gonna be played Michael Jackson. It was given to Melissa Manchester after the pitch for Jackson was met with complete awkward silence from everyone except Michael Eisner who pitched it.
The whole room was probably thinking "dude we can't afford him we're already strapped for cash because if this movie tanks so does the studio and everyone with it" lol. Can't blame a guy for shooting for the stars but MJ at his peak would NOT be cheap LOL.
Also to answer your question, this movie was made in the 1980s, 1986 to be exact. This was the first movie to be directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, who also directed The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, The Princess and the Frog, and Moana. This was also the first Disney movie to include Digital Graphics. You saw it in the Clock tower sequence inside of it.
I didn't discover this movie until recently, but I love it just the same (and not just because the girl's name is Olivia. Lol). I like that they make the distinction that Basil isn't THE Sherlock Holmes, he just lives underneath his house. Also Ratigan is just an amazing villain.
Im not sure if this is the first disney movie to use CGI with hand drawn animation (I think that distinction belongs to the Black Cauldron), but the clocktower scene was definitely a step up for the craft.
This movie was part of my childhood- the Big Ben scene at the end was always my favorite out of the whole movie, along with Basil's "we'll set the trap off now!"
Basil is hands-down my favorite Disney hero!! They handled the climax of this movie so great in that they’ve built Basil’s intelligence as his strong point through the whole movie. So to put him in a situation where that only gets him so far and he is legitimately IN DANGER and you suddenly realize how small he is compared to this now feral creature out for his blood and you’re scared for his life. 😰 SO WELL DONE.

i remember watching this movie with my grandmom ( RIP ) as a small kid when she'd babysit me. god i miss her ; she'd give me all these amazing " behind the production" facts about movies and this one was my introduction to sherlock holmes and my interest in science/English culture
This is the resurrection of disney animation and leads to their "golden age". This is one of my favorite Disney movies. Its Sherlock Holmes "Disney edition" but it feels a little sinister. One of my growing up movies along with "Sword in the Stone" and "Fox and the Hound"

Actually, The Golden Age was the late 30's/early 40's. The 90's was the Disney Renaissance.

Great classic Disney movie. Basil lives under the home of Sherlock Holmes and he takes on some of his mannerisms, his deductive ability and his playing of a violin. Dawson is Watson and Ratigan is based on Professor Moriarty, his nemesis.
Vincent Price roundly said that Professor Ratigan was one of his favourite roles that he ever played in his life.
Sherlock Holmes is actually voiced by Basil Rathbone(who played him in some classic movies)through some stock footage audio.
I love the entire scene where Basil breaks them free of the trap. "Smile everyone!"
I think it was the first mix of CG and 2D animation in a Disney movie in the Clock Tower sequence.

However, it was the first Disney feature animation to include CGI animation, specifically the clock scene, where it was used for the bakgrounds. (Yes, Tron had CGI earlier than this, but it also had a sizable live-action component.)
Ratigan going full-on Mr. Hyde on poor Basil always scared me as a child.
This movie is a really great, underrated classic! So glad you enjoyed it, it's one of my faves! ♥ The darker vibes it gives mixed with the light-hearted music and characters, with a dash of scary really makes this film a fantastic watch for many ages.
Very glad you took everyone's advice from the comments (including me) and gave this movie a go. A treasured classic for those of us that watched it as children growing up. This, Fievel Goes West (sequel to An American Tail), and The Rescuers Down Under were my three mice movies I watched all the time.

Ratigan was actually voiced by the legendary Vincent Price, and I believe he did a great job in this film

Well done on the review! Your enthusiasm is always so awesomely innocent and fun to watch. Fun fact about Rattigan: He was voiced by Vincent Price, who also did a few other animated films. One I would recommend that’s an underrated film is The Thief and the Cobbler. I’d watch one on RUclips before looking for it on prime. Also also, this movie lead to many successes for Disney in the following years.
Ratigan is without a doubt one of the most unsettling Disney villains ever; and I'm not just talking about what he did in the film. To see him finally go insane by the end of the movie and the fact that he was trying to hide his anger before that just makes him so unsettling. Plus, he's voiced by Vincent Price, so that's obviously an addef bonus.
Also, Fidget is definitely one of the creepiest Disney villain sidekicks ever. Every time he pops out toward the screen always freaks me out just a little.
Also, maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think his death is actually darker/better than Ratigan's, at least in terms of how it happened.
Either way, this film is criminally underrated.

No it is not underrated. Everyone loves this movie and it is greatly beloved by Disney fans. People need to stop using the word underrated when it comes to any Disney film. XD
I remember when i was a kid i used to watch this on a VHS tape in my grandparents house in canada and i thoght this was a good movie.
The plot and the soundtrack with the whole story is so good even if it is an underrated disney movie.
This is one of the most memorable movie I have ever watched and to this day I still haven't forgotten it. The villain was really scary
Fun fact: during Ratigans villains song their is an alternative take of it that gives details about the “Tower Bridge Job”. Long story short during a robbery ratigan found himself on the Brooklyn bridge where he decided to have his crew kick the family’s off the bridge. The families then had the ultimatum to either willfully drown or rise for air and get shot.
This is why the original song has the line “worse then the widows and orphans you drowned”.

When I was little I watched this over and over. I became obsessed with the word “crumpet” and I was terrified of Fidget the bat when he pops out of the toy baby crib. I also always loved Ratigan even though he’s the villain. He’s the most extra, fabulous villain with an actually frightening transformation scene at the end that still gives me chills as an adult…
So. Someone's probably mentioned already. But this is heavily based on Sherlock Holmes. Personality and obsession and everything. And Dawson is even his version of Doctor Watson.

the great mouse detective was one of my favorite disney movies as a kid, so its really nostalgic to me, also its really good.
One of my faves for years when I was younger and still one of my top 5’s. The end sequence fight in Big Ben is still one of the top Disney finales IMO.

The great mouse detective was vital for Disney to do well in, because the previous movie, the black cauldron, did so poorly Disney animation studios was actually at risk of going bankrupt. This movie was the last movie Eric Larson worked in, the last of the original Nine Old Men who created Disney animation as we know it today. The movie worked out to be the transition from the Disney dark ages to the Disney golden age, where some who worked on this film then went on to work on Aladdin and Little Mermaid.
I love this one a LOT too! Sherlock's character is my favourite in any adaption tbh
This is one of my favorite Disney movies. It was apparently scary to a lot of children, especially the clock scene.
Fun fact. This movie took heavy inspiration from the characters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s, Sherlock Holmes books. There’s many movie and series adaptions of these books. I highly recommend the Sherlock movies Robert Downey Jr stars in. ( Sherlock Holmes and A game of shadows) if you haven’t already seen them. Id love to see your reactions to them!
No it isn’t, it’s based of “Basil of Baker Street.” It literally says so in the movie.
@@sarahgreen9554 The movie is based on the children's book Basil of Baker Street by Eve Titus. There's no question that Eve was inspired be the Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Anyone who has read both series is aware of this. Disney was inspired by Eve's books which was inspired by Doyle's. It's merely a matter of the degrees of separation. Even the name Basil is a nod to Basil Rathbone, one of the best actors to play Sherlock Holmes (a recording of his voice was used for the silhouette of Sherlock Holmes we see in the movie) as well as a wink to Sherlock Holmes fans, one of Holmes' disguises is as a sea Captain named Basil. Just as Basil the mouse pretends to be a sea captain. The fight scene at Big Ben is basically a mouse version of what happens in the Sherlock Holmes stories The Final Problem & The Adventure of the Empty House. Toby the dog helps Sherlock Holmes in the Sherlock Holmes stories. Both Eve's books and this movie make numerous allusions to Doyle's stories.

Sadly this movie came out at a time when things were going rather slow for Disney. . .so it didn't get the recognition it so rightfully deserves.

The gears of Big Ben was one of the first uses of CGI in a Disney film.
One of my favourite movies from when I was a kid! Fantastic characters, great atmosphere, and it was my introduction to the legendary Vincent Price!
For those who don't know: Basil literally lives in the hole in Sherlock Holmes' apartment, which explains how he's a good detective. Also, four of the mouse characters are mouse versions of characters from the Sherlock Holmes books:
Basil = Sherlock Holmes
Dr. Dawson = Dr. John Watson
Mrs. Judson = Mrs. Hudson
prof. Ratigan = Prof. Moriarty
