You are just amazing! I love how you present your videos.
My gosh those intro footages was just gorgeous!
Beautiful footage! Heavenly image!
Thank you for this review Garth! My G2 arrived yesterday and I look forward to testing it out! :)
Congrats! Received mine a month ago and I'm still playing with it like a kid on christmas!
Noice! Keen to see some footage, let me know how it goes with the shoots!
Garth your videos are SO inspiring! Just watching those short fragments of your films is a huge satisfaction. Thank you very much for putting your content and yourself out there for us!
You have inspired me to become a filmmaker. I've bought a bmpcc4k and rigged it out. Wish to see more content for you, although, obviously, you are a busy filmmaker :D
Thanks for being here for us!
Bro! thank you! comments like this are what keep me posting on youtube. It really means the world to me. If you need any advice or anything just send me an email. Thanks again!
@@GarthDeBrunoAustin oh yeah I will :D Thanks Garth!
You're the MVP. thank you for this 🏆
Thanks for the heads up on the buttery luts, I've been looking for the easiest solution to get a quick grade, I appreciate the extra 5% discount too. thank you once again!
Fellow saffa here, really enjoying your content. Found it after your bmpcc4k, I hope your channel explodes!!!
Fantastic job Garth! Absolutely love this review made by a REAL filmmaker! So fresh! Keep it up!!
Matteo Bertoli Visuals thanks Matteo! Loving the Lut!!
Another great video. I always look forward to your reviews.
Solid review man! Great content.
From your G1 review to this, you've made me reconsider BM again and part ways with my trusty FS7. Really appreciate your reviews mate. Cheers fro Aus.
FS7? Please part ways
I haven't had much experience with the FS7, only shot on it a few times in the past. Does the FS7 give you everything you need? or are you finding it has limits?
@@GarthDeBrunoAustin The FS7 was released in 2014 and the sensor was shared from the F5 in 2012! it's still produces amazing footage and is super easy to use. The ergonomics are very similar to the G2. Does the FS7 give me everything I need? yes...but I want more :) RAW, resolution, Motion cadence, Colour science are very attractive.
Great review, really enticed by this camera. Thanks.
Excellent review! I've been wanting an Ursa type camera for a long time, but I'm probably gonna wait till they release their next big camera. Hopefully it'll be 8K since the P6K was just released.
Your content is top quality!
Amazing footage. This is a great camera. I’ll check out your channel.
Thanks for the review Garth. I own the Pocket 4K and am now contemplating either a used G1 or a new G2. I’ve been focused on the G2 mostly because of the greater sensitivity and higher frame rates. I’d forgotten about the rolling shutter improvement, so that puts another item in the plus column.
davidcaincineinc Thanks for commenting. I’ve also got the Pocket 4K and find it’s a great complimentary camera for the UMP G1 and the UMP G2. If you can pick up a used G1 for a great price I would seriously consider it, however if you’ve got the money for the G2 and are interested in the improved rolling shutter/higher frame rates it truly is a beast of a camera for your production work.
Awesome video and work as always Garth!
Tyler Edwards Thank you soo much Tyler!
Beautiful short
Awesome, dude!
I’m not interested in this camera but your footage is so incredible! Greetings from Guatemala! c:
Charlie Andy thank you for the comment :)
Garth, this was a great video.
amazing honest info... thanks for sharing!... gracias!
This video made me 100% sure of my purchase of the G2, almost instantly.
Hey you still happy with it?
Nice video mate! I've had the G2 for a month now and coming from a Sony A7RIII, this has been the BIGGEST improvement of my life! Truly an amazing camera for the price!
@Quantum Images do you like the ergonomics of the bigger camera vs the A7? Or image? What's the "biggest" improvement, one thing or many? I'm a Sony user, BMD curious. haha
@@tampacam360 Well, where to start! First of, it's BIG. I've got the shoulder mount and handle kit, with the SSD recorder, EVF and V-Mount. The camera is basically 7x the Sony. Means that I need to buy another gimbal (Ronin-S to weak), another, slider (Edelkrone Slider+ too wiggly), tripod, etc. So the change was pretty expensive in that regard. BUT, everything bad fades away when it comes to image quality. Coming from a 8bits h.264 compressed footage to a 12bits RAW and ProRes 4444, the difference is huge. Especially when color grading in Resolve. The BRAW footage plays back much easier than the .mp4 from the Sony. It's so fun to grade too!
All the choices of quality and resolution AND frame rates that you have is so good. Having super clean 120fps in 4.6K is unbelievable! The shutter angle option instead of shutter speed is great too, meaning you always get that 180° for a smooth motion blur despite of the frame rate change (you can get the 180° in Sony too but each time you change the frame rate, you have to manually adjust the shutter speed). And having the ND filters in-camera is a good complement to that. Saves lots of time! The camera itself is really ergonomic. Onve you've got it on your shoulder, you can basically access everything you need with buttons on the side. You can also navigate a menu in the EVF with a knob to change frame rate, guides, peaking, etc.
Skin tones are wonderful and the dynamic range is crazy, like it's hard to overexposed anything! Of course, after a day of shooting, I am exhausted, but the motion cadence you get compared to the wobbly rolling shutter mess from the Sony is worth every drop of sweat! It really feels like a cine camera.
As of now, it's been a very good move. And if you don't want the extra weight and don't need the high frame rates, go for the Pocket 4K or 6K!
@@quantumimagesQC thanks for all the detail. Glad to see you've had great experience with the color grading. I'm mostly interested in the image quality, thanks for sharing your experience.
Just your experience changing from A7RIII to G2. I feel the same way. It really does have that cine feel when shooting.
Sound in this video is real good
Well done man! I'd love to meet you!
Great review and footage Garth. I'm currently considering the G1 or G2 so your video is helpful. Loved the lighting on the bathtub shots. Can you share how you did that?
Love the shots at around 11:10. How did you light it and which lens did you use? Would have been awesome to include aperture and lens and in a perfect world a quick bts shot that shows your lighting setup. It's simply stunning. Thanks for the video!
improved image & more crisp audio :) Thump up for G2
I liked a lot your video and I subscribe and I ring the bell - only one thing next video it would be good if there 'll be written also che lens you used and the iris and shutter speed - the 144 thumb up is mine - great prophessional review .
Tony Zecchinelli Hi Tony, thanks for leaving a comment. I’ll keep that in mind and I’ll add that information in next time. 👍
Great video! Would love to know what lens you were using?
Your footage looks amazing! Could you do a video on your process for color grading?
He just used the butterly lut.
Hey dude- incredible colors. What drone are you guys using?
Thanks for the amazing review and your work! That is, do you think that there is no urgent need to change G1 to G2? And the question of support from Blackmagic does much harm to the owner of the G1 camera? Thanks in advance for your reply!
Garth,
How are those 300fps shots so incredibly clear and beautiful? It is upscaled from 2k, right? Could you explain how? Or is it just simply 2k vid in 4k timeline, and the resolution is just outstanding out of the cam?
Beautiful videography and gorgeous lady and a camera too :)
Amazing footage, interested on how does the camera respond to lowlight?
Not good
When can we have the footage and the audio? Great review, btw.
Dude this desert footage is a look i’ve been trying to achieve for nearly a decade!! Absolutely STUNNING. Did you use a polarizer? Also, what is the focal length of the lens you used for that shot!?
Awesome review! very high quality footage! I wonder if the Ursa mini 4k is also a good one? since it is only around $2500-3000 something.
Blaknorris lol!
Im actually shooting a UrsaMini 4K video showing how it's still an amazing camera! but the Pocket 4K is just amazing, I would still use it over the UM4K
Looking to upgrade from my DSLR. Do either G1 or G2 have decent, continuous auto-focus? From what I’ve heard the LCD screen on the G1 doesn’t flip around all the way for selfie-style filming. Does the G2? Your shots are beautiful, I can’t wait to try it out myself.
Is the Sync the same for external recording as earlier? Seemed to really break down quickly on earlier models.
Would you recommend this or the C200? Or maybe wait for the RED Komodo? Thanks!
What do you think about de BMPCC 6K .. would you buy this one as a second camera or primary?
Please tell us which lens was used for the G1, at 5:34 they're clearly not the same. I can't visually identify it but it is not the Sigma. Otherwise flawless video, huge thanks!!
never been impressed with black magic cameras but damn. i am really thinking about as an alternative to a red or varicam
what mic are you using? your voice comes out super clear on my headphones
I sub your Channel, your work Is awesome.
Can i ask you about your diver watch, is it a Citizen Diver?
_Cheers from Italy_
San Sone Thank you for subscribing! My watch is the Citizen Eco-Drive watch for diving 👍
What lenses do you use on your G1?
Would you recommend I should get the new ursa 12K model to future proof my set up? I already have the ursa4.6k G1 and I wanted to get the G2 but a friend told me to spend a bit more and get the 12K I wanted to ask you if that’s a good idea?
Besides 4k 120 And 1080 300, whats the difference between the G1 and G2 Specs wise?
I have the original UM 4.6k and I could never really use it in low light because of fixed pattern noise in the dark. I get it is not a low light camera, the original BMCC is also not a low light camera but I can use that in the dark because its does not have quite as bad fixed pattern noise in the shadow. I heard the G2 does not have those fixed pattern noise anymore and is useable at ISO 1600 and 3200?
Excellent review. I've heard a bunch of people complain about the preamps on the G1, saying they are terrible and that the G2 was a huge improvement, do you think that you just got lucky and got a good model of the G1?
Morgon Dickerson not sure, I haven’t had any problems with my G1 or any of the previous Ursamini’s
Can you upload some raw slow-mo 300FPS footage, eager to play with some before I buy the G2
G1 HAS SAPRANO SHARP VOICE(AUDIO) G2 HAS BASS HEAVY VOICE (AUDIO)
Didn't think there would be audible difference between G1 and G2, especially on RUclips, but G2 has clearer upper midrange.
Is the footage up on google drive yet? I'd love to test it out
Thank you for the video. Great camera for documentaries, events, and commercials, maybe even some music videos, but I'm having reservations of getting an authentic film look with any Blackmagic camera that uses a sony sensor (the original bmpcc is an exception, using a Fairchild sensor). No matter how much color grading or lighting you slap on them, they still look like video cameras. You remind me of my little brother btw. :-)
I am using mixing headphones and I am hearing just very slight difference in audio between G1 and G2. There is like 0.5-1dB-ish more bass in G2 :D that tells me you are sitting an inch or two closer to the mic.
musaire amazing! I’m impressed you could hear the difference. There may have been an inch or two difference from the top of either mic. But from what you can hear is there much difference in the quality of audio? With a slight gain adjustment we can have them sounding pretty exact? Thanks for the comment :)
@@GarthDeBrunoAustin The audios of these two cameras here are definitely that much alike so that these tiny tiny differences may rather come from mic position or depend on any other technique used in testing (+what happens in the editing software - compression/limiting amount, EQ, that shouldn't affect the result actually if the original levels and applied correction are the same, but if G2 has more gain then compression and limiting may cut it differently) . :) We are talking barely audible stuff. Listened it again, maybe I will listen the OOC version later as well, if available. The audio from G2 has so very tiny bit of more body in the middle or bit lower in frequencies here, yes - it sounds as if one of these: 1. it is limited/compressed more due to higher input gain (somehow) in editing software, 2. mouth is closer to mic - so that the sound is bit more boomy AND potentially mic itself can clip it a bit in the process (because it sounds bit more compressed or clipped/limited with more mid-low loudness), in addition.
Compression amount is pretty normal for speech :). Just wondering if it happens in mic hardware, in camera or in editing. What mic is used?
In case you record stuff yourself (excellent choice of BRM as well btw), Warren Huart (Red Hot Chili Peppers and other recordings) has great vocal recording tips that mostly also apply for interview/speech/whatever recording (to make sure not to clip the mic hardware, distance, mic type etc) ruclips.net/video/zl-2xMe5iEg/видео.html
Once again. Barely audible. I am just high on coffee and more excited about the quality and beauty of the pic!
G2 seems to have slight bass improvement.
It's exactly what I was thinking.I wouldn't sell the G1 for the G2.
But I would sell it for other reasons (other camera that better suits my needs).
G1 & G2 are great cameras that I strongly recommend for high end advertising or documentaries. But for narrative content, I would go elsewhere.
Theoretical Limit why is that?
How did u get that 1st floating shot?
waiting for link!!!)
Phillip Bloom lookout!
Review on bmpcc 6k! Please.
Rhythm SG haven’t got one yet, as soon as I do I will do one 👍
Garth De Bruno Austin awesome!
Thank you!
Hello! what lenses are your favuorites to use?
Tere Wild one of my favourites is the sigma 18-35 1.8 and I also really like the canon 24-70 f4 but when using the metabones it becomes a f2.8 👌
@@GarthDeBrunoAustin thanks!! Im strugelling to choose my cameras for a cultural documentary style tv show I will produce for Chile (my country) I just bought the Sony 7S3, but the image look so digital and I looove how Black magic looks... I also have a Panasonic GH5 would you recomend the black magic pocket camera 4k? As is micro 4/3 as well... or the 6k? Because Ursa mini is too expensive for me right now...
Tere Wild Tere Wild Hmm good question. If you can afford the pocket 4K and the metabones adapter you’ll have the best of both worlds, being able to use both micro 4/3 and Ef lenses is a life saver for me. I end up using the pocket 4K way more than the 6K.
Would you be able to send me a shot or two from the Sony is 7S3? Would be keen to see how the footage grades. I can then send you a couple of shots from the pocket cam for you to see how the Raw image looks without compression
@@GarthDeBrunoAustin The A7S3 havent got to my hands yet, but I have seen a lot of it and I dont really "feel it"... the specs are incredible, but the image is just too digital for me. I will look on youtube a guy that uploaded a link where you can download vis a7s3 footage!
Why you like the 4k more? How is it on low light?
Maybe a good combo for the tv show can be: GH5 + GH5s (for low light) + BMCCP 4k or the 6k with sigma 18-38 which I already have + 24-105 f4? Or just the 4k haha...
@@GarthDeBrunoAustin Here is the link where you can download:

I have an r5 it does everything ...but the dr just gives it away....i use lights always and i never go beyond 800 iso i wanna get g1 what u fink
is the slow motion in camera? Or do you have to slow it down in post?
Aquavis Warfield it’s in camera, when you play back footage shot in the “off speed” recording mode (50fps-300fps) it will play back in slow motion in camera and in the edit without having to change any frame rates.
Garth De Bruno Austin is there anyway to not have it slowed down?
The audio clip from the G2 is slightly louder, that'll make 100% of the people choose that 100% of the time as better sounding.....but properly level matched i'd say there's little if any difference.....
Export setting for youtube please ?
SKX007 right?
I didn't really hear a difference between the G1 and G2 audio, the G1 did have a a higher noise floor than the G2, but far from a deal breaker
Nice review, though i noticed green skintones on your face from 3:00
I would get the original G1 but I'm scared of getting the black screen of death and now that camera is a legacy product which means like blackmagic will not fix it and you're just stuck with a broken camera. If it wasn't for that I would have no problem buying a g1
where is the link?(((
Well I guess this puts a damper on us ancients with our Ursa Mini 4.6k cameras. Took me 2 years to save up for it and now with a new camera coming out every 6 months, my camera is just sitting in its case in my closet with no plans to ever use it do to my buyers remorse and complete lack of self confidence.... Oops! I mean lack of 300fps.... and now I'm crying inside😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Its like talking about ex and new partner lol I cant afford them but of course G2. Main reason no rolling shutter and as much as its less comfortable without the side handle, im sure you can rig it up somehow
Went to your website and it said its expired. fyi
You really think a client will suggest the G2 over the G1? 😄
Much lower noise floor on the G2's audio.
Just recently started you're watching your videos I like your style but honestly I think of your audio his weight too dramatic and it makes it difficult for me to listen to your reviews
G1 can film in 4,6k 120 FPS!!!!???
just needs an mosaic engineering aliasing filter. your shirt in the walk up was dancing around with false details.
Any news from Mosaic regarding a VAF/IR filter for the BMPCC4K?
@@chrisratchford8153 I was supposed to test it, they ask me for my camera to measure but said they got someone elses. then they haven't been responsive. I'd say call and leave a message. I'm using the one for the bmcc 2.5k. it looks great but a slight vignett with some lenses that have a larger optical element in the rear. plus, it only works if I set my pocket 4k to 3840 crop so I can still avoid vignette. Fingers crossed on the real version.
Thanks for the update. I’ve emailed them several times but no response. Hopefully that means they are too busy engineering to reply to emails!
@@chrisratchford8153 awesome!
the G1 has much more noise than the G2. the G2 also sounds a little more low/mid heavy.
Great but damn imagine same specs with 6k pcc
TheHitBrainiac not really... no slowmo past 120fps, lower dynamic range and no built in NDs
Glory Visuals not always nessesry and price point matters
Not even remotely close.
camera is only as good as the user . this guy is pro don't buy this thinking your footage will be like his magically
