NEW SONG: 'From 4.28' - Released 15th Jan 2015.
As you may have heard if you follow me on Facebook, I have been working on original music with fellow musician Ben Slack. The project is called Portraits, and this is our first single, titled 'From 4.28'. This is our promo video. It was mixed and produced by the label Hurt Records.
I am SO excited to share this with you. If you've been following my RUclips channel for long, you know my various influences. Many of the ideas put into this song have been simmering in the back of my head for quite a while, and it is wonderful for me to see them materialize.
Ben and I have been in contact for years now and had planned on collaborating before. I'm so grateful we were able to come together at this moment to work on this project together. Ben is an incredible musician and getting to create music with him is mind blowing.
If you like the song, it's available for purchase at the link below (and soon to be on iTunes). The download package has lots of extras, such as a high-quality WAV file mastered by Chris Graham studios (highly recommended listening), and detailed background information about the song from myself and Ben (e.g., song writing process, meaning behind the lyrics, influences, etc.).

Lyrics:
You say nothing's changed here since creation,
I say creation changed nothing.
Verse 1:
Do you believe in all that's written down?
A holy scripture undermines the ground.
As Independent thought is stripped away,
A heretic is all that's left in me.
Chorus 1:
Can you let me,
Find my way?
I have just so much I can't explain.
Searching for answers,
Written in stone.
Oh please just let me, find resolve.
Refrain:
I've been staring through a window, that never let me see.
I've been trying ever after, to comprehend the sink.
And the theory of the world now, the deepest time we see.
The 4.28 billion is locked under my feet.
Verse 2:
I dreamt of something truly groundbreaking,
Where isles they rise then fall into the sea,
Where they collide, combined infinitely,
And they return by heat that sets them free.
Chorus 2:
Can you let me,
Find my way?
I have just so much I can't explain.
Call me a heathen!
Send me away!
Oh please just let me, find my way.
Bridge:
The young earth theme,
This young earth theme,
The holy ghost versus the deep.
Ignis terra invenire versus petram.
Finalé:
Oh the catastrophic floods,
Cutting chasms out of mud.
Oh the catastrophic floods,
Carving mountains out of dust.
Please, keep this project on the scene! You guys are such an inspiration for all of us.It's been a long time I don't listen great songs like that. Many congratulations to you and to your partner Ben!
+Doc Pus Thanks for the great feedback; it's really nice to hear from folks like you who enjoy this music. We're working on the full album now, and we are really excited about how it's shaping up. Recording starts in December!
Awesome song! Defintely gets you thinking; the amount of time and thought that went into this does not go unnoticed! 5:28 - 5:48 is undoubtedly my favorite part. If resolution was what you guys were going for, it was fully achieved. The synergy and syncopation between the vocals and drums really stood out and made this song for me. Keep up the great work as always, looking forward to your next cover!
Awesome John! I am looking forward to hearing more from your band.
Sick new song featuring one of my favourite "unknown" drummers, John Williams.
FINALLY!!!! John, this is exactly what I would hope and expect from a musician as talented as you! I can't believe I, just now, heard this! Great job! Both of you did amazing! I have been scouring for some music to inspire thought and excite me. It's been too long. Great instrument work, as well as lyrical content. Keep it up! PLEASE!!! The world NEEDS good music to offset the shit. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
This is an amazing song! I've discovered you through your Tool's covers, and and I feel like the things both of you are currently building with this album will be pure awesomeness. I can't wait to hear it!
Congratulations, once again !
+Marc Sømberlain Thanks Marc, we are mixing the album right now and we can't wait to share it with you guys! Not long now.
Great job! I can't get this song out of my head.
Beautyful work ! Congrats... wish you the best, you deserve !
Great job!!! This an awesome song!!! Please give us more of it!!! :D
Im so excited for you! Great single. will definitely buy when i get the money. cant wait to hear more
Also I felt a lot of Danny Carey in this. love it.
That dudes got some pipes! Amazing song
Nice John. had like a radiohead tool and something else feel to it!
I remember I had to comment your Right in two cover .... as a Tool fan I couldnt allow me to pass by without giving you the right recognition. Now, I comment again as a music in general fan to congratulate you for this great great song. Thanks for sharing and I hope your album is comming soon! P.D. I've listened this song like 25 times already (: hahaha Greetings from Venezuela
God that slide in the chorus sounds fuckin sweet. Great job guys, as always.
Dude, I like this a lot.
I like it man.
Interesting to hear something original from you.
Great job
That was pretty frickin' sweet, man!
Reminds me of the band atomship... Like a lot. Very very cool man. Its different, which is one of its greatest accomplishments. I Love it dude. Keep recording, it only gets better
Ah man this is amazing!!
Very good man. Very good. I'm going to share this video weekly, you deserve attention. Great feel !
Glad you like it, and many thanks for sharing.
Great work John... the song is killer. But I appreciate the production of the video as well... camera angles and details are awesome. I think of the band Three when I hear some of this music. The poly rhythms at the end are so great. I know you're using dynamics but they would be nice to hear a bit more through the guitar/vox mix. Can't wait to see and hear more.
man ive been following benn since his zombie songs and playthegameco. im so glad hes still making great music
Awesome drumming! I can definitely hear Danny Carey's influence in your playing...
awsome song
man wtf?!!?
AMAZING.
Would love to see you your drum only cover of this song mate!
I do plan on posting a drums only video for this too.
Really nice!
Glad that I was able to find your RUclips channel through Benn! From the numbers here it seems like the reverse was true for a lot of people.
Thanks for stopping by; glad to have you here!
AWESOME
I really like the Deftones vibe!!
Good shit John.
love this song.... when the album?.. Always listen to your covers john before I go out. gets me amped. cheers from Australia
+Michael Pankhurst The album, will hopefully be released in January next year. There is plenty of insight on the @BennDown channel for Portraits if you're interested. :)
Ok cool. Will check it out
Nice piece!!
Wow dude!!! This is actually better than I expected, and believe me I expected a lot from you! I'm looking forward to hear more of this. I thought of a very good french band called Lloyd Project when I heard this song! Good work dude!
Thanks man! I always enjoy your references to obscure French bands. Thanks for the heads-up on Lloyd Project. Listening now...good stuff.
johnkew Haha, even in France they are kind of obscure, but the live performance of the song "Black Haze" that you can find on youtube is really outstanding! They deserve recognition and I'll try to do the same thing for your new project as well in France, cause it's really good, fresh, I love the voice, I love your work on it! Music when it's good deserves to be shared don't you think? ;)
john .. super work man .... u really thought about this drum work didnt you..the timing signature is awsome ... great song, my kind of music
Thanks! We did put a lot of thought into this one. Not trying to sell you on the download package, but there's an essay in there by Ben and myself going into a lot of detail about the concept and structure of the song. For £1 ($1.50) , it's a steal :)
johnkew where i can find it?
Simone Noli There's a link in the description for the download package on Hurt Records. It's also on iTunes.
Thanks.a.bunch :)
Hawaii says hell yes!
Uaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuu
Wow, this is fucking amazing!
There's more than danny here I'm very curious. originally followed for the covers but there's for sure a different style (other than yours mr. kew) that I hear
Great job man! Who is going to cover YOU?! :D
Daaaang! John! Man! Wow! I follow your Tool covers and there's a bit of an influence there, maybe? That tempo was hard to follow ;)
Dude! What a song! And I love how that guitar sounds! When are you releasing the album? you can bet I will be a fan!
Congratulations to everyone involved!!
Cheerio!
Qartoffeln1 I'm glad you like it, and definitely a Tool influence. If you like the guitar sound on this one, just wait until the album, because Ben has a new guitar that is just incredible. We're planning on recording the album in November. We may release another single before then.
Hey John! That's great to hear! So looking forward to the album! :)
I've watched it over and over again but I must admit it: it's a mathematical challenge to follow that tempo of yours. And that's the greatest of it. It's unconventional and unique. Only for "open" ears that don't (just) want to listen to mainstream music. Again congrats. It's a pleasure to listen to it.
I play guitar myself (mainly; piano and drums sometimes) was it tuned on C? Or was it B? definitely low pitched and that's why it sounds so damn cool :)
Nice to hear from you John. Have a good one!
Cheerio,
Q
Qartoffeln1 You know, I'm not even sure how Ben tuned the guitar. I'll ask him, and maybe he can chime-in here. Anyway, I'm glad you like the song, and you've hit on exactly the points that we were striving for with this music!
+Qartoffeln1 Hello there. The guitar is tuned to A#, F, A#, E, G, C and the entire song is master tuned to A430hz not A440hz. Thanks. Ben
+Benn Down
Hey Benn! thanks for the details. Definitely low pitched! As I said, it sounds really powerful but very clear at the same time. Well done, mate.
I sometimes tune my acoustic to 432Hz (you know, the Earth frequency they say). Keep rocking as scientifically as you guys are doing. I'm glad to be able to share with you some words and thoughts. I find it really interesting the way this thing is ongoing. Meaning that you are developing a band and sharing the process with everyone else, which in return gives you great feedback, maybe suggestions or advice, followers/fans and, who knows?, maybe even friendships at the same time!
Looking forward to your album!
Cheerio there!
Q
Man this song is the fucking BALLS
Awesome playing and dynamics John... very impressive. I see your influences in your original work - I'm mainly referring to Tool and Rush... but I'm sure there are others. Great job! When you go on the road, I will be your drum tech ;)
Thanks for the feedback Matt, and I hope you're doing well.
I'm okay John... I hope to get some new videos going soon. Your videos and playing are top-notch!
Yeah man...great. got a real aenima/white pony feel.
fucking soo good!!
Big Chops. Guitar tone is killer.
Hey man, awesome stuff as always, would you be willing to do 'Crown of Horns' by Cryptopsy? I haven't seen anyone do it justice and thought you'd enjoy a challenge =)
Fu**** awesome
Those are Phil X's humbuckers, right? That's pretty freaking cool.
+Sacha LR Hey Sacha, Ben describes it thusly: "I marked the humbuckers with the same markings as the pickup selector switch as I re-wired them myself and wired two to continuously feedback (the X X ones) and the one with the tick is the only responsive pickup. I’ll have them re-wired to normal before I send the guitar off as it’s VERY specific ‘as is’."
+johnkew Even cooler ;)
...wow
The voice reminds me of Andrew from Rishloo in parts.
❤️
Shake effect was headache-inducing, but nice drumming.
melodically cleansing to the pallet.......
Not a big fan of the song but great musicianship as always!
If the context makes it any more enjoyable for you what is going on lyrically is actually the story of a Scottish geologist.
Square and compass guy looks like Alfred Molina
nice song? only two guys?
is this just me or is the drum track completely of sync?
This is a very obscure project in the eyes of everyone, including it's creators. I believe that this was purposeful, but I may be wrong.
the rythm timing is made like that i guess
..
Ashwin Narayanan If you've had any previous experience with Benn (how he likes to be called on the internet), you'll understand. I recommend searching 'Benn Down' or 'Two Down' and listening to some of his older stuff :)
Thanks man.. i didnt know about the benn thing ..ill check it out .. im a huge fan of tool so i know about the timing thing ... can u recommend some bands which has this kind of stuff Mr. Wizard's Tears
Ashwin Narayanan I enjoy Beartooth, Bring Me The Horizon, and Pierce The Veil.
