Tool's music always imbues a sublime sense of satisfaction, but Lateralus by far takes me on a journey more thoroughly than most anything else they've done. After watching your channel I am embarrassed about mine. I have 450+ covers on my channel and they're all shot with a single camera, no post production, no outboard gear of any kind. They couldn't be more lame. You are an inspiration on so many levels. Thank you!!!!!

I love the way you extended the fill like how Danny does it live and I just love the way you played the whole song. Hats off to you covering one of the hardest songs on drums I've even come across, and making it unique in your own way. Amazing song. Amazing cover. Amazing job.
OMG....That was just perfection Finally i can hear and watch a perfect cover of this song It's great to know that we still have people with great ear and musical instincts.....this is not just a cover This is a perfect way to love and admire real music Perfect job sir🎼👏
One of the things I find hardest in music, no matter which instrument you play, is finding what music to play depending on you as a person. There is nothing about the playing I can comment - it's out of this world, but just how much the music fits you while I watch you play to it - the movement, the energy, the emotions. One of my favorite covers to date!
Watching this was so inspiring, I felt like I was in a trance just watching you journey through this track, then that two handed stick catch at 7:18 was so uplifting to see you pull off - true passion. Fucking incredible.
You’re my new drum hero! I’m so addicted to Tool at so many levels, but it’s almost spiritual for me. To be able to study someone playing drums at the skill level you bring absolutely blows my mind and motivates me to get behind my drum set knowing I’ll never be able to come close to playing like you. Doesn’t matter...the inspiration is there nonetheless. I literally smile ear to ear watching your Tool covers. I hope you do every single Tool song. You are phenomenal.
it is never safe to say anything like that. It is what you think, that doesnt mean it's absolute truth. There is no such thing as "best" in music, especially tool's. If that's your favorite song, I totally understand, but it is not the best tool song. there is no best tool song.
I love watching each and every one of your videos, especially the Tool and Deftones covers. However, have you ever given TesseracT, particularly the song Nocturne (on the Altered State album) a shot? I would love to hear your take on that song and I think it's right up your alley. And this song... I've been blown away by this song'd drums ever since seeing that video of Danny Carey playing it on his custom brass kit. Seeing the whole thing played out by you was a treat!
Great job, and I love how you spiked the "drumstick football" at 8:05. That's "I F'n GOT THIS" if there ever was. What's cool is the first cover of yours I saw was off the latest Tool record. You've clearly been practicing - you've evolved into a more relaxed and groovy player - from one who was already very technically proficient. Cool to see. Props, sir.
When a guy can get this much praise for doing a cover so perfectly you really gotta respect the hell out of Danny Carey's genius. I mean it is rare for a very good drummer to have three signature songs where his mastery of the craft can be put on full display, but Danny has dozens!
Absolutely amazing. Such a great job. You can listen and appreciate Danny Carey, but you truly can't see just how insanely difficult his drumming is until you see it up close.

The part after the solo where it get much simpler and slower it feel like unloading your soul. Amazing.
I don't think people realize how difficult Tools time is to keep, and then this dude has it on lock down! Clean, precise and technical master piece. 👌 well done good sir. Your Tool covers are incredible
Couldn't find this one on johnkew's Tool playlist and thought the usual scumbags of YT had removed it. Hope Danny Carey sees your work and prevents from being dropped down for copyright crap.... its only for educational and research purposes. Best tool covers ever!
I found myself clapping at the end, alone in my room like "dude, you deserve a medal"
Watching this in glorious 2160p, my eyes have never known such beauty..
2160p ? does that exists ?
4K
Effect of spirals maybe
Don't usually comment on drum cover videos, especially on Tool covers. In fact this is the first one I HAD to comment on. This is by far the best cover of Lateralus I've seen on RUclips. I may find a similar one, but I'm 100% sure I won't find a BETTER one since this one was basically flawless. Well played, John....
Thanks for chiming in, I appreciate the feedback!
I don’t know what’s happening, but RUclips is back to recommending videos of this channel…I ain’t even mad, this is 100% the best cover on RUclips. Patiently waiting forJohnKew’s return.
holy shit.
every once in a while you see someone whose instrument is a pure extension of their body.
this is one of those once in a whiles.
Closest I have heard to Danny himself and I have had the good fortune to see Tool live 6 times. Bravo! You kill it where other people covering it are off
Phenomenal, as always. I just wanted to emphasize, after all that technical polymeter, polyrhythm and whatnot, finally at 7:21 when it comes to a normal 4/4, there's just so visible breath of relief and "Now I'm gonna enjoy!" look on your face, and style of drumming changes 100%. A joy to watch and listen. Thank you John for your videos, really, from the bottom of my heart.
Hes actually playing 6/8 time, the guitar is the one in 4/4. More polyrythm, just not on the drum... TOOL
@@Classicalmusicscores1984 Yep, now that I counted, it's really 6/8. :) But even that is "simple" enough to easily headbang after all that before, hahaha. :)
It’s 6/4. 6/8 is twice as fast and is the previous time signature during the buildup. 6/8 comes back at 8:15.
Damn I need to come back every now and then to watch you absolute nail my favourite song from my favourite band. And of course it is so shallow to talk about those stick flips, but damn those were the icing on the cake cause you look soooo "in the zone" man. And I love your expression right at the last ten seconds, when you know you nailed it and you look so satisfied. My oh my John, you are crazy and so talented.
i have sat and listened to this song dozens of times with my eyes closed focusing on the drums as this is one of my all time favorites but seeing it is simply amazing.. what a track.. feel like i'm at the shooting range
I wonder how the band,"Tool" is of this planet. Their music compositions are out of this world. Great playing Mr. John! 👏👏👏
I have watched these videos for years to get my streaming Tool fix. I love watching you play and your videos are top notch. I will keep coming back!
You inspire me to practice, practice, practice!! The amount of time & effort you have committed yourself to break down all the intrical parts & pieces of the Alien known as Danny Carey is absolutely incredible!!! I cannot applaud your efforts enough to justify what you are achieving! Brilliant!! Just Brilliant!!
Perfect!!!! Absolutely perfect in every detail--the performance AND the production. As I've commented before, I am in a Tool tribute band and your videos are tremendously helpful to me. After watching your channel I am embarrassed about mine. I have 450+ covers on my channel and they're all shot with a single camera, no post production, no outboard gear of any kind. They couldn't be more lame. You are an inspiration on so many levels. Thank you!!!!!
That drum with the spiral bouncing like a heartbeat from the sticks did a great job
Justin chancellor is playing drums. Really good as well
Шикарный драм шикарного трэка. Ни добавить, ни убавить😍
Damn man! Keeping those weird timings, flawlessly... Had me smiling ear to ear. Rock TF out!
I've lost count how many times I've watched this; One of my favourite songs, by one of my favourite drummers. I wish I could nail this with such precision!
Euphoria: the smile that came across my face and the happiness that filled me knowing I was about to watch my favorite DC song of all time being covered by a master....thank you thank you
That’s one of the most awe inspiring things I’ve ever seen. Utterly amazing piece of drumming John
I watched this video probably well over 50 times. This is, quite literally the perfect cover, and it's of one of the best and most difficult songs ever recorded. I'm amazed each time I watch it.
7:18 Ninjutsu! and look how does it feel the groove, awesome! \m/
u channel danny so perfectly. your enthusiasm is contagious, precision on precision, keeps me coming back over and over on same video. your indian shirts and homely innocence are intoxicating on top of superiour drum skills on the best band of our generation
7:07 I'm a begginner/intermediate drummer and I love this song so much. That whole section of the song has always given me chills and with the way you play it, I could listen to that all day. I love the way you extended the fill like how Danny does it live and I just love the way you played the whole song. Hats off to you covering one of the hardest songs on drums I've even come across, and making it unique in your own way. Amazing song. Amazing cover. Amazing job.
OMG....That was just perfection
Finally i can hear and watch a perfect cover of this song
It's great to know that we still have people with great ear and musical instincts.....this is not just a cover
This is a perfect way to love and admire real music
Perfect job sir🎼👏
7:07 was so satisfying to watch cause I’ve been trying to learn this too
Fuck that was amazing. Not the first video of yours to make me teary eyed just from sheer awesomeness haha. Job. Well. Done.
One of the things I find hardest in music, no matter which instrument you play, is finding what music to play depending on you as a person. There is nothing about the playing I can comment - it's out of this world, but just how much the music fits you while I watch you play to it - the movement, the energy, the emotions. One of my favorite covers to date!
watched this about 20 times now and it's nothing short of magnificent
WOW this is the best drum cover i have ever seen. Can`t belive you only have 25K subs!
love the fibonacci spiral on the floor drum :)
You look and sound like you are really enjoying yourself and I think that's what makes this cover work so well. :)
At 8:00 he had entered that zone of comfort and bliss to the point he just couldn't help himself..😆..Like a BOSS!!!!
Not sure how many of the 290K views are me, but I can't get enough of this. Masterful work.
Watching this was so inspiring, I felt like I was in a trance just watching you journey through this track, then that two handed stick catch at 7:18 was so uplifting to see you pull off - true passion. Fucking incredible.
Joe Jarmain This guy is reaaaallly good.
5:37
Wow. How in the hell do you play such a weird, unorthodox sounding beat?
Incredible
@@shanecombs1993 It sounds incredible
Never ceases to wash away the world.......if only for a moment.
That'll do me for the month.
Thank You Jon !!!
7:07 must be one of my favourite bits of percussion. amazing sound!
This is one of my favourites and you nailed it.
I couldn't help but smile from 6:39-7:18. Nice job!
Man, John, this is awesome.
Thanks for the comment, and thanks for stopping by!
this is the best drum cover of this song or any Tool song I've seen yet, awesome job man
You’re my new drum hero! You are phenomenal.
everybody impressed at 7:20. yeah that's incredibly times and placed and impressive but what about 8:03???
TRIPLE SPIN JESUS CHRISTTTTT
I think its safe to say this is best song tool has made
it is never safe to say anything like that. It is what you think, that doesnt mean it's absolute truth. There is no such thing as "best" in music, especially tool's. If that's your favorite song, I totally understand, but it is not the best tool song. there is no best tool song.
tom just waste a good 15 seconds of his life
what ?
it was his fucking opinion dumbass, and it probably wasn't even that serious, wtf was that paragraph of yours
Am I not allowed to write what I want ? I do what I want with my time and my thoughts, no ?
7:10...jaw drops to the floor...
One of the best drummers putting videos out to the ether via RUclips.
It’s an absolute joy watching you beat the crap out of your kit, man.
You look so happy by the end of it and it was contagious. I had the widest smile on my face and was going "YEEEE BOIIIII :D"
+Greg Schmidt Great recommendation - I love Tesseract! And thanks for the great comments.
*a year late but* based on the few videos of yours I've seen today I would LOVE to see TesseracT represented here
Great job, and I love how you spiked the "drumstick football" at 8:05. That's "I F'n GOT THIS" if there ever was. What's cool is the first cover of yours I saw was off the latest Tool record. You've clearly been practicing - you've evolved into a more relaxed and groovy player - from one who was already very technically proficient. Cool to see. Props, sir.
Rockford Rocker Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback!
well played mate. even got the snare throw off for the poly rhythm section. nice detail.
Please upload a tutorial for 5:39 :D I start glitching when I try to play that part xD
Great job!
