I remember the first time I heard this song. I was fresh out of high school, driving with the windows down to my job at Jamba Juice from Waikiki beach. I could feel the sun on my skin from laying out - and I still smelt of salt water. I'm sure I was running late to work (sorry, Malia!). And then this song comes on the radio. I remember pulling over on the side of the street - I've never heard anything like it up to this point. And my initial response was bigger than "I like this song" or "I don't like this song." It was a feeling that took over, a sense of wonder and unfamiliarity.
Paul and I really wanted to change things up - because change is always a good thing. Dare to do something that you'd never think of doing. After receiving Ableton, I thought the best way to learn how the hell to use it was by doing a video. It helped - I love how Ableton gives you endless possibilities to create music. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it!

I disagree. I love her and what she does. That said, I've seen her perform several times in person in Los Angeles. What she does here isn't brilliant, but you see IS HER OWN and is awesome. That's why I think she is amazing.

shaolinwisdom I must agree with you, NIN music specially those from PHM to The Fragile are songs made not for easy reproduction. In any way to my mind just two bands/musicians made respectable covers: 1 behemoth with wish and 2 devo with head like a hole.

Fine job of recreating a timeless classic. I was just out of college when I heard "Head like a Hole" & I knew then NIN was going to be crushingly good. And then this one released. Industrial music has never been the same since. That song so personifies the messed up, neurotic & morbid culture of the time. Preoccupation with technology, war time, religious fanaticism, drugs... I think today's generation just grew up numb to it. And as much as people think Marylin Manson raised the bar, guess who produced them in the beginning?... Trent Reznor. The man is a genius.

It's gotta be said.....I love the original NIN version of this, it's a bloody CLASSIC! But this cover is INCREDIBLE and I actually prefer her version. It's the innocence of a female voice, it brings something really new to the concept of this song. Penetrate doesn't have to mean physically, it can mean emotionally. To really wanna take your lover to a different place, make them belong to you, to really possess someone in order to feel better about yourself and your own insecurities. Plus the use of samples and the feel of the track is just FANTASTIC...I'm am seriously abusing the repeat button on this. Fantastic work and I think I have a little bit of a girl-crush on Kawehi.....her passion for the music reminds me of myself...that complete escapism into a track. She's enough to turn this straight girl just a little bit gay!! Gorgeous!

It's ok if they bring recorded vocal tracks, but at least they will play some keyboards and play some beats. Not just pressing the "Play" button. Ok I know they still do many stuffs during live but you know what I mean.

@@ChristoCurrentsFor what it's worth the beat is irrelevant. It's a simple 4/4 time disco beat. She avoids the copyright problems by sampling all original sounds and using her own voice. It also helps that Reznor has released most of the music onto the internet years ago.
@@ChiefSmackahoLLC It's not just that she avoids copyright this way. The track and the video, showing her creating loops and layers on-the-fly is (in my opinion) exactly *how* this cover transcends its source material. It's memorable because we can view it as a process.

Looping is a art. This video proves it. Usually, transcending a song in the process of covering it requires substantial alteration (like Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt"). That makes it personal and unique.
Kawehi transcends the original by turning every critical aspect of it up to max. It's rare to see a great cover done in essentially the same style as its source. Kudos.
