This is exactly what Bruce Lee was talking about. He trained under Ip Man himself and concluded that traditional martial arts training has become unhelpful. The various techniques may be excellent, but practitioners are not practised in full contact sparring and are therefore completely unprepared when squaring off against a full contact opponent. MMA is full contact, simple and effective. So is Thai Boxing, Boxing and most ground fighting styles, and that's what you'll see in most MMA fighters, maybe with a few TKD kicks added in. I'm no hater, I would love to see wing chun or akido used effectively, but with the light training methods still in place, I can't see how this can happen. The police will use basic akido locks to restrain aggressive people, and the military will use krav maga to devastating effect, so we know the techniques are solid, but for civilian use the training hasn't evolved with the times. Bruce Lee said this in the 70's, but it's taking MMA to prove it. Time to functionise traditional martial arts training, or consign it to history along with Japanese swordplay.
David H Absolutely right! Most WC schools never have anything to do with body-conditioning, no warm-up, stretching, nor weight training; while other systems like Muay Thai or boxing adhere so much to the basic body conditioning before any skills being taught. Also, for so many times, those delicately precise WC skills are always taught in a fragmented manner ( I of course understand there must be some good Sifu who can teach effectively), but the fact is that a student may need to spend almost a year to simply "copy" the forms, the moves, while so many cases the student may not even know how to synthesise the skills learnt, let alone the possibility of any real application - the no. 1 problem for many WC students is that: there are simply way too many key points to bear in mind.
