I’ve trained for roughly 20 years in Kung Fu, Karate, Muay Thai, Sambo .. started at 8 yrs old. This guy I really like. He acknowledges weakness and strengths, distance as a factor etc. whenever in a real fight, it’s all mma kind of. You do stuff not traditional but rely on muscle memory and reflex a lot. He’s not so out there about realities of martial arts. I’m really happy with this presenter!
14:50i remember doing that practice punch, parry back forth until super fast. It’s just an exercise but was so fun to do and actually paid off in a little scuffle in college really well. It was so automatic. I’m 6’ 225lbs when lean and I still talked my way out 99% of the time. It’s always some friend I was getting into trouble for. But yeah, I did this punch or chop, block, parry back and forth and backfist version so much. Flashbacks to all the fun with my brother back in the day. Love this guy.
I was thinking the same myself done martial arts, I can listen him for hours hahaha he was very good explaining, absolutely great video definitely one for the likes.
You can only do kongfu against a weaker opponent. If you get too much preasure 90% of all you've learned goes out of the window... that's why street fights are usually just wild swings and trained martial artists tend to go to MMA rather than their own style.
I also like how he acknowledges certain backdraws of the styles. I did karate for over 20 years and had a couple of friends doing Win Chun. There where always discussions because they where seriously claiming WT was the strongest style of all. I always thought that every Art has it's merits and flaws and that it comes down to the quality of the fighter much more than on the style he/she uses Nice to see a master say the same.
I love how he explained wing chun, and gave proper criticism and representation to the art rather than to promote or put down the art. I’ve seen lots of people who talk down about wing chun and say it’s not functional or isn’t a strong fighting style. But it has its uses and isn’t meant to fight and destroy people. Martial arts should be used to defend one self. Happy he can represent the wing chun arts, well done.
Wing Chun attacks specific points. Why they don't use it in sports is due to it's concept. Most of it's moves are directed to immobilize/kill. It's very destructive.
@@hundefuchs he’s not entirely wrong. There’s a reason mma competitions like UFC have banned a lot of moves, it’s because they’re effective at disabling someone. It’s a gladiator sport, about drawing out competition and kick boxing style knockouts. It wouldn’t be fun to watch or legal if one dude just poked another one in the eye, kicked him in the balls, and chopped his windpipe. Though those are things you could do to be effective in a fight or trying to literally kill someone. Same with motions for breaking limbs, or beating someone up with a long metal pole.

Do you have any pointers on figuring out from first impression and/or my first class if a school is legit traditional Wing Chun or a watered down version? I have done little bits of Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, and Tai Chi (less than a year each), but most recently and for the longest time Wushu. My main interest is Wing Chun so I'd like to be able to find a high-quality school. If, for example, they require info about you before joining and reserve the right to reject for any reason (one particular one in my area does), could that add to potential credibility? If they say they teach through a specific lineage, how likely is that true? If a known instructor such as Willian Cheung visits periodically is that a green light?
@@mikeexits Lineage, tradition, secrecy and exclusivity are generally signs of bullshido happening. One or two are not a definite warning sign, though, many martial arts teachers have a historical interest in their arts and may be enthusiastic about lineages and traditions. Japanese martial arts, in particular, tend to stick to the traditional ceremonies of sitting with your legs folded beneath you and bowing, "it's good for discipline". What to look for is, in general, sparring with resistance. If wing chun is taught, for instance, and you're only allowed to "spar" using chain punches -> the many saos -> chi sao, then the only resistance you're encountering is in-style resistance, which works well within one set of rules - see arm wrestling, for instance - but is less generally applicable as self defense. Names can be good. If you want to learn William Cheung's style of martial arts, and he periodically visits, then you're likely to be able to learn the same style as he is using. I worry more about my own ability to defend myself than specific style, so I look to the resistance sparring.

Wonderful breakdown Master Wong.
I appreciate that he's specifically breaking down the use of Wing Chun, though I'm fairly positive that, in the case of the Sherlock Holmes movie, some of it is actually a mix of Wing Chun and other styles, which addresses stuff like "He did more of a boxing movement there."

from how I've heard it described most to all of these moves are applicable, but they aren't to be used by basic fighters for self defense. If you have no experience fighting you need to start with boxing (or kickboxing) and wrestling. Once you master basic strikes and grappling then you're advanced enough that you can start learning these more advanced moves. The idea is that Muhammed Ali could have potentially been pretty great at Wing Chun if he had learned, but if you want to be pretty great at Wing Chun first you have to be a bit of an Ali yourself. At least that was my take away when it was explained to me. I'm neither an Ali nor a Bruce Lee, so take that for what it's worth

Best thing I've heard, if I remember correctly, he said in a fight, do not instantly do the Wing Chun stance, just be free, be flexible, move your body according to your opponent so you can move out of harms way fast. Then when you attack/parry/deflect/block, that's where the Wing Chun comes in, after that back to being flexible.
15:30. Time and time again, even if you're a martial artist, someone with a fighting background, or someone who knows a thing or two about disarming, at the end of the day the best option is to run.
Studied Isshinryu years ago for a few years, and the most important question for my first real belt was what to do when faced with a knife -- the correct answer was to expect to get cut and to run as soon as possible. My dad taught me to box when I was a teen, and karate perfected it -- I can still break a board! Being able to throw a good punch is a handy secret tool as a woman. 😃
Absolutely. When I taught self-defense and karate, the first thing I always told my students was "if they ask for your wallet, GIVE THEM YOUR WALLET! You can replace a wallet a lot more easily than you can heal a major injury!"
"10 Karate guys against 1 wingchun guy, I think karate guys will eat the wingchun guy alive" I like that honesty, some masters will tend to explain some dumb technique to get out of the situation.
As someone that has practiced Chinese martial arts for almost 30 years I feel like this knowledge sometimes ruins watching these movies, it’s hard to not see the faults in some of the techniques, but I love that these movies are bringing awareness to how great these martial arts are
Well ironically these are not movies for martial artists but for ignorant (of the topic) spectators. I've yet to see a movie where there's real behaviour that can be called realistic fighting. Wait I remember Raiders of the Lost Ark, Doc. Jones shooting the sword guy, that's the only realistic fight I remember. Anyway this guy knows what he's talking about!
That applies for anything. Whenever I see a piano or guitar scene in a movie I'm thinking "are they actually playing that, or are they going to edit around it?"
As someone who trained in Wing Chun with an actual Grand Master, this video brings back a lot of memories. He's correct in all his critiques, and he also subconsciously points out how people frequently get Wing Chun wrong. It's an extremely brutal and dirty method of fighting, designed to maximize striking power while minimizing stamina drain. Nothing fancy or flashy, and nothing wasted. Rudiments galore.

You know Bruce Lee? Wing Chun (Wong's main martial art) performed so poorly in his one real world use of it, he literally sought to create a whole new martial art.
he actually told a story on his channel, about how once he beat up a bully in his school, right before even meeting him, and the bully called all his friends, and they waited outside his house calling him down, well he did go and got beat up, but guy learned that day.

What I’ve learned in Muay Thai is your elbows don’t have to be thrown hard to create damage. Many elbows that cause lacerations are ones that aren’t thrown with much power, the bone is so hard and sharp that it will do damage regardless.
Yes, which wing Chun does but a big part of wing Chun is using a block, say with your elbow to physically attack the opponents strike. Allot them to strike your elbow instead of your face etc. It's actually extremely difficult to avoid when done properly as well

Very classic wing chun
I hate to be that guy but he's more of an angel.
he called it a cartoon
I always thought that every Art has it's merits and flaws and that it comes down to the quality of the fighter much more than on the style he/she uses
Nice to see a master say the same.
@@edi9892 This is literally a style designed to fight against people larger and stronger than you. You're wrong.
This master has more energy than the movie scenes he reviewed... 😂😂
Now That's Very Classic Wing Chun
Пустой энергии ,ему только и фильмы пересматривать ..на большее он не способен 😊
Martial means combative, it can’t be limited to the defensive aspect
Wing Chun attacks specific points.
Why they don't use it in sports is due to it's concept. Most of it's moves are directed to immobilize/kill. It's very destructive.
@@Hinshu85 hahahhahahahahhahaha
@@hundefuchs funny until you get your eyes jabbed out or your balls crushed with a sharp kick. laugh that one off..

Props to Master Wong for acknowledging Karate, and also traditional Kung Fu/Martial Arts. All too often, people overgeneralize and try to promote their own style/ideas. Master Wong, however, takes the absolute best approach when he immediately says that behind all those styles, there are different ideas and that those all have different strenghts and weaknesses. 👍👊💪

@@King-pv8fk Exactly what my sensei kept telling us! Look at other martial arts and pick up everything that looks useful.
@@mdgeisto8953 Yes. For example people look at Wing Chun as a whole and cast it aside saying 'it is useless', while good martial artists look at all the moves of a style and pick out the useful things and add it to their own arsenal. Bruce Lee did the same with karate and boxing.

If you want japanese one check NHK arena and most of NHK martial art, for kenjutsu depends if you want solo if you want AOE Rurouni Kenshin iirc he is inspired by an irl figure in Japan i forgot check Shogo. Taking a two week Wing Chun course will teach you a tremendous amount of self defense lessons that are applicable to other areas of life.
Don't use his choke defense in real life; it'll get you killed.
from how I've heard it described most to all of these moves are applicable, but they aren't to be used by basic fighters for self defense.
Bruce Lee claimed a single boxer with a year of training would beat a Wing Chun guy with 20 years.

Prodigal Son is the best showcase, Bruce Lee..enough said there, and 3rd was that splendid display by Donnie Yen and Max Zhang. Thanks for all your encouragement, Master Wong! 👍
So many that have English as a second or more language can be pretty hard to understand.
Really easy to understand and pretty impressive. He's really a great teacher with his understandable
break downs. 10/10 Thumbs up!
I absolutely love this man's energy, so passionate for something he loves
More of that guy please...his energy is great
This was the best critique video I've ever seen. The explanations, combined with the Master's energy and love of his craft, makes this a perfect video. 👍🏾👍🏾
Haven't seen master Wong videos in years. One of the best Martial arts teachers on RUclips. Great, no bs stuff as usual. Highly recommended to check out his channel and learn from him.
🙏🙏🙏💪💪👊👊
Instead of Dragonball Super, they should've included another anime fight; namely Boruto Where Momoshiki faces off against Naruto and Sasuke. Naruto specifically uses Wing Chun techniques in one minute of the fight while Momoshiki uses a one-inch punch later on.
Yea but WHIS style is wing chun so I see why they used it but that fight would have been another good example
And naruto/boruto suck.
Straight up wing Chun in that fight. I loved seeing Naruto go from being a brawler type Shinobi to a more relaxed Hyga style one.
@@aarons6935 Not the movie. The first Boruto movie genuinely is among the best of the best. ESPECIALLY the fight against Momoshiki, the animation the coreography, setting, story. It is all so so well done and it is literally my #1 fight scene in all of anime

Hard to believe with how bad Shippuden was.
I love this video. Get more people like him. I could listen to him talk about fighting for hours.
I’ve been following Master Wong for years, he is only based 45 minutes from me, been wanting to join his academy for years. Love his content over on his channel. He breaks down every move, in real scenarios. Great guy.
the amount of explosive passion he has is awesome. bring him back!!!!
It is amazing how nice and pleasant this guy is, you almost forget the fact he can knock you out cold in a split second.
3 minutes in and Master Wong is in my top 5 favorite expert breakdown folks. Love how he keeps it real.
Master Wong sounds VERY passionate and intelligent in this video. I love the way he explains and corrects things. WE NEED MORE OF THIS GUY🔥
Love this guy! He's so positive and informative. Even when what he's seeing is not super related to wing Chun, he finds the common points.
Master Wong is the BEST!
He legitimately is in my top 3, no offense to you or anything but im not very familiar with your channel tho I do recognize you lol
But I recommend checking out the channel mindful wing Chun sometime. It centers around alot of other aspects aside from self defense etc but I believe you'll find it interesting
Thank you 🙏
I’m so glad to see Master Wong getting more recognition!!
I love his energy! I also loved the, “my friend getting up, hold on, is it my turn”😂 This was one of the best videos of this series I’ve seen. I’d like be to train with him or even just be around him. He seems like such a dope but humble man.
