If you watch the Disney+ version, definitely keep the subtitles on, it's non-stop rapping/singing & you'll miss plot points. It's literally a groundbreaking musical.

There are all types of musicals. Your initial impression of musicals isn't necessarily wrong, but they've definitely evolved. Hamilton broke the mold. It isn't your typical musical. Can't wait for your full show reaction!

    • @loshay3325
      @loshay3325 Год назад +10

Hamilton broke the mold similarly to how RENT broke the mold in 1996 and the evolution of music thankfully keeps progressing Broadway and stage musicals along further. Theatre is in itself a collaborative art form and as musicals continue to progress forward with newer and different ways of telling stories it’s just further collaborating with the evolution of music. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Here's a fun little thing I remember hearing about this performance. I believe it was Lin and/or Daveed doing an interview with someone when this performance at the White House was brought up. They said how they were all pretty out of it because they were still doing the standard 8 shows a week. (Broadway shows usually run every night with an additional earlier performance on Sundays.) I believe they got on a bus fairly early in the morning to drive down from NY and had to leave to head back to NY almost right after this to go perform the show. I believe it was mentioned that they had been drinking as well before performing this live.

The 'guy' that was Hamilton is Lin Manual Miranda, the guy who wrote it. When former President Barrack Obama stated that this is 'the room where it happened' it is a bit of an Easter egg for those that know the show as not only is it actually where the Poetry Slam happened, it is also one of the songs in the show which can be seen as one of the pivotal points as well. Awesome reaction, will love to see the full show reaction at some point as well, but I may have to wait for that one

  • @SilverSeaOT7

You really need to see Gen. Layette ( Daveed Diggs) perform on his rap for “Guns and Ships!” Diggs won a Tony Award for “Featured Actor” in a musical in 2016-- This will blow you away.
Also, “The Room Where it Happened” - Probably the most well known song was sung and rapped by Leslie Odom Jr who was in the original cast. So talented. He won a Tony that same year for Best Lead Actor in a musical. He has also won everything from Academy Awards to a Critics Choice Award for his original song “Speak Now” from One Night in Miami. It’s on RUclips. -Oh, and his Christmas music. Ok….I went overboard so I’ll leave now.

You may want to check out in the Heights (another LIn Manual musical) if you enjoyed this. Or the movie Tick Tick Boom (direted by Lin Manual) about Jonathan Larson who wrote Rent. (antother great musical you should check out). I am a fan of musicals, if you couldn't tell, part of what drew me to BTS, so much of they songs tell stories that touch people.

Musicals can be so moving and soaring and incredible. Most great musicals tell a story. Hamilton is truly great: Watch the live version; but see it live. There’s nothing like it, being in an audience experiencing it together. The entire cast is incredible. You are also hearing more singers in the back. And Lin Manuel had a Tony already for In the Heights and has written a ton.

My daughter was a theater/musical junkie and was over the moon about the Hamilton soundtrack when it first came out, and while I love musicals (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, etc.), I avoided Hamilton because I generally don't like rap or hip-hop or cursing. When it came on Disney, I figured, what the heck, might as well. I was humbly apologizing to my daughter that night! Lol! It has since become one of my favorites, it and the cast inspired me to vote for the very first time in my life and I even joined a letter writing campaign to encourage others to vote. I even wrote to and received a note back from Lin-Manuel Miranda!! I hope one day I may be able to join your Patreon and see your reaction, because I'm sure it's going to be epic!

The traditional musical is a play where the characters break into song at key moments. There are some musicals (Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, etc.) that tell the whole story through song after song after song with almost no dialogue in between. That's the kind of musical that Hamilton is, which makes it so fun! So, you start with Lin Manuel Miranda's talent for putting together a fantastic song, add outstanding vocalists and amazing instrumental arrangements, throw in a fantastic group of chorus singers/dancers and a rotating stage and you have the closest-thing-to-perfection production that is Hamilton. Go. See it now. NOW! GO!!!

I was NOT expecting you to react to Hamilton. It's one of my favorite musicals. Lin worked for many years to perfect this beauty, it was inspired by a biographical book about Hamilton himself. He resonated well with the fact that Alexander was actually an immigrant from Puerto Rico (where he's also from). The actor you like, Leslie Odom Jr., won the Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. And the other actor you liked, Christopher Jackson, is a long time friend of Lin's and always had Chris in mind to play Washington (he specially wrote the Washington solo for him).
I really hope you enjoy this musical, it is so good 💛

Oh, we need to get you a musical education! The whole "I'm singing on the street about how much in love I am with random people around me" is in deed what old school musicals are like, and they have their place. But the newer musicals from Sondheim forward are much deeper and more intense, with the story often being told within the lyrics of the songs too. With much more complicate rhythms and internal rhymes that are super fun to pick apart. But you sometimes need to know some of the old-school stuff to get references in the newer stuff. Even Hamilton references South Pacific in a cool way as well as some other obscure musicals from the 90s.

John, I have loved musicals since I was a little girl and I used to live in Connecticut and I could see a lot of cool shows in New York City and I would take my sons when they were younger and we would go this way we would go to concerts musicals and plays down in New York City and my son and I saw Spider-Man which was freaking amazing and I’ll have to get a link to one of the songs written by Bono for you. My son and I were sitting in the front row. The balcony and Spider-Man actually swings all around. He like flies around the concert hall and he flies up and he lands on the ledge right in front of us that’s wild. We also American idiot, which is that Green Day musical. That was super cool But our favorite is a play called Spring awakening. It’s an actual play that was written in 1890-ish and bunch of really cool guys got together and said let’s make this into a like like a kind of a rock show so if they take the story of the kids from 1890s Germany and this is like their coming of age in a repressive society. And Duncan Sheik Rd. all the music amazing. Oh and wow there is this other movie turned musical called Once. An Irish busker and a Czech immigrant musician meet at the music store amd make beautiful music. Together

My all time favorite musical! Lin Manuel Miranda is a genius! You should check out his original raw version of this song/rap which he performed at the White House years prior to writing the full musical! Here's the attached link: ruclips.net/video/WNFf7nMIGnE/видео.html He was invited to the White House Poetry Jam and decided to perform this rap instead, which was suppose to have been part of his Hip Hop concept Album (not a full musical)
I forgot who suggest to him to create a full musical based on Hamilton's life so he spent years to finish writing Hamilton. There's an amazing documentary which gave you the entire behind the scenes of the entire process. It was by chance his friend, a filmmaker asked to film him working on this and no one had expected Hamilton to become the iconic history making musical!
This was aired on PBS but I can't find the full documentary but here is the link to the Trailer: ruclips.net/video/_KsTjxKi5JE/видео.html

If you don't want a "feel-good" hippy-dippy "singing my feelings" type of musical, then, in addition to Hamilton, you should try Les Miserables. It too tells a story through song; there's barely any non-sung verbal dialogue in it. Of the available online choices for Les Mis, the movie is probably the best introduction to the show, even though a lot of people don't like the movie. I say that because I don't know of any stage show versions of Les Mis that are available in full online, except the 10th Anniversary Concert version, which is NOT the full stage show - it has the "dream cast", but they stand at microphones to sing their parts, instead of doing the actual blocking and acting that you'd get in the actual stage show, and while it has subtitles, it's still a bit difficult to follow during the time jumps within the story. The movie is just a little easier for a Les Mis "newbie" to understand. For Hamilton, the "movie" version on Disney+ IS the stage show, filmed live over two performances, one with a live audience and one (for close-ups) without, and I would suggest watching it with subtitles on so you don't miss any of the lyrics, or having the lyrics pulled up on a separate device, so you can keep track of where they are. Enjoy! :D

Just so you are clear this is a performance of music from a musical. Watching an actual musical on stage is an entirely different experience. Usually a damn good one.

I'm so glad you liked it! Lin-Manuel Miranda (who plays Hamilton) is one of my writing heroes. There's a whole world of amazing musicals out there it just depends on taste whether you will like each one. I even found a musical that has a song called musicals where they simultaneously pay tribute to and playfully make fun of the idea of musicals. I suspend belief just on the concept of breaking into song whenever and ask the musical to give me something outside of that. If you want to continue, I'd start with musicals based off of movies to ease yourself into the genre. Legally Blonde, Shrek the Musical. Both are great. If you like those, then I'd jump in for the really great ones.

If you like this you'll like Evan Hansen and RENT. They're both very impactful and revolutionary musicals similar to Hamilton.

Hamilton is a great gateway show into musical theater. It's so diverse in both it's casting and musical styles that it really opens doors. However, if you enjoy it there are plenty more shows that you might like. I'd suggest looking at American Idiot if you enjoy Green Day, Spring Awakening, and Six.
Also, if you enjoy the storytelling through song aspect watch Come From Away. It's incredibly moving, and there is a filmed stage version on Apple Tv with most of the original cast.

If you want to jump into musicals that don't just have "feel good filler" songs, and do have depth and character moments in the music, I recommend: Rent, Newsies, and Phantom of the Opera (25th Anniversary stage production, not the theatrical film).

You can probably get away with breaking it up into songs and posting them individually (if you don't mind the work). I highly recommend leaving the subtitles on when you watch the musical so that you don't miss any of the lyrics.

If you want another not-your-typical-musical WATCH “COME FROM AWAY”… the entire show is on Apple TV but there are performances from the Tonys and the Olivier awards on RUclips (Tony performance is better IMO) - so you could do similar to what you did here.
But seriously… at the minimum every American and every Canadian NEEDS to see this show! It’s a lot of true stories within an AMAZING true story… you’ll laugh, cry from sadness, cry from being moved and inspired
The entire cast is 12 or 13 people all of whom play multiple roles… the vocals are great, the band is great, the choreography has pretty minimal flash which is appropriate for the story
I loved this reaction though…. I’m probably going to have to join your Patreon now 😆

This is, of course, a fantastic musical, and very unusual for being sung straight through. If you're interested in something else that really flips the script on musicals, check out the show "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend". Yes, the title seems....not like something anyone would touch, but it's really really good. At first it seems like the kind of musical you're used to: people bursting into song randomly in a scene, but as the show progresses you realize that the musical numbers are all in the main character's head, and they're how she interprets the world. There are over 150 original songs in the show, and they cover almost every genre of music you can imagine. Plus it's just a really good satire and a deep look at mental health.
