Hamilton doesn't just use hip-hop as a medium, it is inspired by hip-hop. Lin-Manual uses cadences, styles, etc., to show the growth of the characters. He is a huge hip-hop head and the play is peppered with homages to Biggie, Nas, Busta, Mobb Deep, DMX, etc...

Lin-Manuel Miranda (also plays Hamilton) wrote this, and also previously In The Heights, another Broadway smash hit. He gives homages and lays down Easter eggs to a lot the hip hop greats. It's fantastically written.

Absolutely true. I listened to the entire album like 20 times before I went to see it live. What an amazing play but not only that, as a hip hop / R&B album in total it is incredible. Mr LBoyd, it is absolutely worth a watch and as a history and hiphop head you would love it.

So so so so so good.
I know it’s a lot, but I really do recommend if you’re going to do more Hamilton reactions, to do them in order. Even if you don’t do every song. They tend to build on each other and call back in certain ways. But all the tracks are fire in their own way, and Miranda approached the music like a hip hop historian or something. It’s so good.

  • @redsassy938

ALL OF IT~!!!!!! Linn Manuel Miranda is EPIC.....mega hard core hip hop head....10 Dual Commandments is a direct link to 10 crack commandments by Natorious B.I.G.
There are books and breakdown channels dedicated to dissecting every word, rhythm, theme of the show....it is a MASTERWORK. Howard Ho's breakdowns are the best.

  • @pp36
    @pp36 3 года назад +22

LMM wrote all of it. All. Of. It. A lot of attention is given to the rap parts of the musical that it’s almost narrow minded and pigeon holes the show. There are raps (brilliantly written & delivered) but there is R&B, Pop, Jazz. Don’t base watching it from one snippet. You have to start from the beginning to understand what’s going on and the diversity. The choreography also demonstrates the many styles of dance. It’s art & LMM is genius.

My friend. Hamilton is like experiencing brilliance for the first time. Watch it through it's entirety. The songs connect with each other masterfully. Royce Da 5'9" says on Layers that he saw the musical and it changed his life.

You didn’t finish this! Really! It continues for another minute or two. I do enjoy your reactions, which is why I’m a subscriber. And your wife is right (of course), you do have to watch it. Recommendations? All of it, from the funny songs by King George, to the fastest rap in the show, performed by the marvelous Daveed Diggs, to George Washington’s Farewell Address, to Burn….
I don’t know if I can keep this brief, but I’ll try.
As he was leaving for vacation from his Tony-winning musical In the Heights, Lin picked up a copy of Ron Chernow’s book Alexander Hamilton, for some light reading. (It’s 700-800 pages of dense, heavily foot-noted, carefully researched material). He says that he hadn’t gotten very far before he realized this should be set to hip-hop. He was amazed to find that no one had done it yet. He thought he might develop it into a mix tape. And you’re right about his influences, too. And Lin is from the Washington Heights area of New York City. It probably took him 8 years before the whole musical was completed, and I don’t know if that includes the off-Broadway time at the Public Theater. Lin had a different theme of music for each major character, and yes, he wrote the whole thing, in collaboration with Alex Lacamoire and heavy input from director Tommy Kail. For instance, King George has songs reminiscent of the Beatles. True, not every fact is 100% accurate, and the timelines are scrunched up, but it basically sticks to the facts. And Ron Chernow served as Historical Advisor, and he and Lin had debates on what must be included and what could be altered a bit.
Two things I recommend you do: watch the RUclips video of Lin Manuel performing the ‘Alexander Hamilton’ song at the White House; and watch the King George numbers. And watch the whole thing! On the WH performance, a little background is merited. Shortly after President and Mrs Obama moved into the White House, they held a night of song, music and the spoken word, and invited several major stars and well-known artists. This was after Lin had won the Tony for ‘In the Heights’, and he’d been asked to perform a piece from that. Lin decided to do this new piece he had just completed instead, introducing it as a song about a man who embodied the very essence of hip-hop, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. (The audience of dignitaries giggles.) He says ‘you laugh’, etc.well, by the end of it President Obama gives him a standing ovation. It took him a year to write this piece, another year to write the next one, then Tommy Kail put him on a schedule so it could be finished while they were still alive!
There are multiple interviews on RUclips with both LMM, Ron Chernow and various collaborators that I found very interesting.

Agreed to the ones who are saying you should react to the whole show in order. It's worth it! I'm not a hip-hop fan myself so all the references go right over my head, but from what I understand, Lin is a big fan of old school hip-hop and pays TON of homages to artists who have inspired him over the years.

On the topic of the history in Hamilton, one of the absolute best arguments I’ve heard for Hamilton’s plan to assume states debt has to do with how the war was fought. Every state benefited equally from the war but the war wasn’t fought equally in each state. New York saw a lot more action than Virginia therefore it’s debt was higher but, at the same time New York saw no more benefit than Virginia did. So since everyone benefits equally everyone should help pay. You also have to remember back them people were much more loyal to their state than the country, where now people are generally loyal to the country as a whole.

It's hip-hop. It's Broadway. It's pop. Lin Manuel Miranda even snuck in a lullaby. It's the history of the American Experiment, in extremely entertaining form. It is absolutely so mind blowing that old people (like me) who really REALLY don't like rap or hip-hop, and kids who don't like history, and metal heads who don't like show tunes, and all those who don't like theater...and we ALL LOVE HAMILTON !
I'm not even joking a little bit. Watch it tonight. Then come back and try to let us know which song was your favorite...bet you'll have more than one.
If you watch the original cast on Disney, you will find yourself wanting to clap and give a standing ovation in your living room to the tv...that's how good this show is.
Suggestions from the old lady nerd corner, "Alexander Hamilton "; "My Shot" "You'll Be Back"*; "Wait for It"*; "The Story of Tonight"; "The Ten Duel Commandments "; "The Battle of Yorktown"*; "Dear Theodosia "; "One Last Time"; "Cabinet Battle #2"; "The Room Where it Happens"* .... and I'm leaving out "Guns and Ships" "What Did I Miss"
"The Schuyler Sisters"; "Satisfied "; "Helpless"; "Burn" and all the rest of the damned musical. * are my personal favorites of favorites that I go back to over and over again.
Listen to your wife! Watch it!!!!

If you listen to the OBCA, Lin’s influences are apparent. Lin grew up in New York in the 80s/90s, and he alludes to his influences throughout the entire production.

Biggie and Nas are absolutely the right pegs to understand where Lin Manuel Miranda is modeling the rap found in Hamilton.
But it’s also worth noting that he went to high school with, and was, at least according to the story I’ve heard, dunked in a trash can a few times by a fellow by the name of Felipe Coronel, better known nowadays as Immortal Technique.

Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the bars for Hamilton. I didn't realize all the hip hop influences that Hamilton references until I watched the evolution of hip hop and heard a lot of the things I had heard referenced in Hamilton. All the greats. I'd love for you to watch it and pick out the influences you hear.

Lin Manuel Miranda wrote all of the songs. He used inspiration from hip hop of all kinds. Each character has their own kind of style. It is intentional. So many people just see that it is a musical and don't understand how actually brilliant it is. I would be more than happy to log in to see you to stream the first time you watch it. I watch a metalhead stream it from twitch to youtube without the video just using the external speaker from his computer along with his mic for streaming. Not only could his followers see his first reaction, because honestly it is like Christmas for those of us who love the musical, but he could ask questions and get answers quickly. He just gave the time stamps so we could watch it along side him. Get your wife to watch with you too!
My top songs in particular for you to review are:
    -Helpless/Satisfied
    -Guns and Ships
    -One Last Time
    -Ten Duel Commandments
    -Wait For It
    -The Room Where it Happens

Definitely watch the whole thing. I grew up on east coast hip hop and the music here definitely pays tribute to that. Biggie, Nas, Busta Rhymes, one song gives big Ja Rule and Ashanti vibes. It also tells a great mostly accurate story.
The show is almost entirely music so if you just go through it song by song in order you’ll get the whole story.
You’ve become one of my favorite reactors for your insights into what you’re watching and I’d love to see your take on all of Hamilton.

Lin Manuel Miranda wrote all the lyrics. He’s a true hip hop head. You DEFINITELY should watch Yorktown from Hamilton. There even is a performance of that song from the Tony’s. It’s my favorite. I also had mixed feelings when Lin’s stuff was suggested to me. I thought it would be cheesy watered down hip hop... but it definitely isn’t. Love your channel, bro!

I love your reactions! You've gotta do a Hamilton reaction all the way through. Beginning to end. It's a masterpiece. The composition, the lyrics are so thoughtful and evocative. The choreography is exceptional. I think it came out in 2016 but I didn't see it until lockdown last year. I was bored but not after I found Hamilton. I probably watched it at least 20 times. It's addictive. There's a very deep message in it, no matter how you choose to look at it. Isn't prospective a wonderful thing?

Lin Manuel Miranda, he’s from Rich Port, I vele he’s from the NYC. I really wasn’t interested, but when the Weird Al version debuted, I liked it, I noted it mentally to share it with my nephew, and eventually I gave in and bought the album. This was 2018-ish…. I’ve been stuck on the album ever since. Give it a shot, maybe watch it with the wife.
-- also, a bit of a big Beatles fan, the whole play touches on different genres - the song that evokes the British Invasion, I almost hate 😬 but that might be my “American identity” showing.
