      I knew almost nothing about Hamilton, and even less about Aaron Burr, but I knew that Burr shot Hamilton due to an old "Got Milk" commercial in the 90s. The commercial involved a janitor in a museum listening to a radio show while eating a peanut butter sandwich. The radio show did a call-in trivia contest for a large cash prize, asking the question "Who shot Alexander Hamilton?" The janitor glanced around the museum and identified a series of items depicting the duel between Burr and Hamilton, and excitedly called to deliver the answer. However, when he tried to answer, his mouth was still stuffed with peanut butter sandwich, so he couldn't properly pronounce the name "Aaron Burr," instead mumbling something like "mehhun buhh". He immediately reached for his trusty carton of milk to clear his mouth, but alas, it was empty. Thus, the radio show hung up on him, and in the darkness of the museum, he could do nothing but quietly mutter to himself... mehhun buhh...
      And that's the stupid story of how I wasn't spoiled by Mehhun Buhh the first time I watched Hamilton, lol

  • @jayholland2632
    @jayholland2632 3 года назад +196

    To shorten the journey a little, you might consider doing the songs in groups of 2-4 since some are a little bit shorter in length or flow into the next almost seamlessly. This number gives a broad overview of Hamilton's backstory with the hints of what's to come and the roles the other main characters will play in Hamilton's life. Be aware that, besides Hamilton, Eliza, Angelica, Washington, and King George the other main actors will play different characters in Act II. Once you get to Act II you will realize that, cleverly, those "hints" apply to both characters that each declared just in a different context.

    Ok I’m just gonna make a list:
    1. The vibe is immaculate. Mustard yellow sweater, mug, plant
    2. The commentary is spot on. It’s well-timed (within the song) and a nice blend of vocalist-specific analysis and your general reaction to Hamilton (which is why we come here).
    3. Your accent is just to die for.

  • @weirdbunmi
    @weirdbunmi 3 года назад +63

    Oooh Hamilton reactions!
    I love hearing analysis of these songs. A couple people have suggested grouping a few songs if it feels like this will take a while, which isn't a bad idea.
    The next song, "Aaron Burr, Sir" flows into the third song, "My Shot" if you want to see what grouping them feels like.
    Whether you decide to do that or not, thank you for taking the time to listen to and enjoy this musical!
    I'm sure fans like me would be happy to answer any questions you have, whether it be about production or historical context, so ask away!

    I love how you talk about their vocal choices for their character rather than just their singing abilities alone. I've watched other vocal coaches react to musicals and sometimes they can focus too much on the singing itself and not enough on the character choices the singer makes.

    I know it's gonna be a long ride for ya, but it's going to be a fantastic one and I'm so excited for it :) Everyone on the Schuyler Sisters video was commenting saying that the Winter's Ball/Helpless/Satisfied sequence is amazing, and rightfully so, "Satisfied" is probably one of the best songs in the whole show. However, my favorite song from this is "Wait For It" which Leslie Odom Jr. just KILLS. (He's the guy playing Aaron Burr, the "narrator" in the opener.)

  • @femke3868

    The guy who plays Alexander Hamilton (Lin Manuel Miranda) actually wrote the musical.
    I don't know if you want to react to the songs in the order of the show, but if you don't, there are a few that have amazing vocals and I would love to see you react to.
    Wait for it, one last time, satisfied, helpless, the room where it happens, that would be enough, history has its eyes on you, non-stop, dear theodosia, your obediant servant, who lives who dies who tells your story
    There are a million more I love but I think I should stop here because otherwise I'll just list the entire show.

    I do recommend you react to some of the songs together, as they transition from one to the other. For example: "Aaron Burr, Sir" + "My Shot", and "A Winter's Ball" + "Helpless" (some people might add "Satisfied" to those two too, but I think it deserves its own spotlight).
    Thank you, until next video!

    That was the best Hamilton reaction video I've seen (and I've seen a lot!). You're clearly extremely musically and theatrically talented and so give good insight into the different techniques used by each actor as well as observations about characterisation which is especially impressive bearing in mind this is the first time you said you've watched it! You've also let your enthusiasm for good musical theatre shine through without the video turning into a "fan reaction" which is one of the reasons I think your video is so great - keeps it professional but fun!
    I look forward to watching the others! (Please do all the others!!) :D

    I am SO glad that you're doing this show from the beginning, rather than just picking songs at random. I've seen other vocal coaches do blind reactions to Hamilton and arbitrarily choosing songs, and while their critiques are often good, without the context of the story they sometimes misunderstand the vocal choices being made by the performers. And it heartens me to see that you accurately identified character traits based on their voices alone, such as when you noticed the "frustration" in Aaron Burr's voice when he described all the things Hamilton did to survive in the Caribbean; frustration is definitely a word that fits Burr's character as the story progresses. AND you gave some really good tips on how to produce the sounds being shown, which is great for a neophyte like myself aspiring to Leslie Odom Jr.'s slick and emotive vocals. Great work, and I really look forward to your next video on Hamilton!

    Please please watch the actual Disney + version rather than the versions RUclips has (the slight breaking up of parts of this makes me think it is the RUclips version). The ‘official music videos’ have stars raining down and huge lyrics that completely cover the screen. The choreography is amazing and you will miss so much. Plus the sound quality is so much better with the Disney + version.

    This song not only serves as a setting song, but it’s a 4th wall beak song since it’s them talking with the audience. The reason for this is because this song was from the original mixtape, when this wasn’t a musical yet. Since it was THE song that was performed at the White House and went viral, thus pushing the birth and success of the whole musical, it was left in, pretty much as it was. With orchestration and every character performing it instead of just Lin doing it, but it’s very similar.

    Thank you so much for doing this, it's already loads of fun. I'm looking forward to it a lot!!
    It's really interesting how you pointed out Burr as the one who has the most 'character' in his voice in this number - because he's technically the only one fully playing his character *in* that scene - notice how they are all wearing white *except* Burr in his purple jacket and later Hamilton (before he gets on the ship) - that is a staging decision. Hamilton in itself doesn't use a lot of sets, and yet has to move through a lot of space, time and especially (background) characters. The way they decided to get around that is through their clothes - someone wears a red-coat, they *are* a red-coat in that particular moment
    But in the reverse it means, if you are wearing the "neutral" costume (that sort of beige-white that you see the ensemble in here), you aren't a character - you are literally the choir, playing its original Ancient Greek role in theatre as the narrator/background. If actors/actresses wear that they can give exposition or are simply the 'stage' where it is required, a living set, if you will.
    It's a really lovely and cool idea every time stage directors do that and if you pay attention throughout the show you'll see it a lot (plus it gives you an idea when a member of the ensemble is supposed to be 'Person X' or 'metaphor for/stage setting/crowd symbol' etc.

    When you're talking about Aaron Burr's vocals and the sound of frustration you can hear because of his vocal performance, I knew I was gonna have to watch this whole series. I never would've picked that out myself, not specifically. There are so many tiny details and bits of characterisation hidden in this musical, it's really interesting to have a professional like you pick out those details in a field I know nothing about
    That and your voice is super soothing to listen to, so really you could be talking about anything and I'd stick around. But a nice voice and interesting and educational? Yeah, I know what channel I'm binging for the next few days

Do "Aaron Burr, Sir"; "My Shot"; and "The Story of Tonight" all together. Oh, you really must watch this musical. It’s incredible & groundbreaking. But I have some tips for you: 1) listen to the songs in order. 2) I know you’re a vocal coach so your first instinct is to break down what’s going on vocally-and that’s fascinating for those of us that haven’t studied voice-but if you pause after everyone has sung their part within a song, you lose a bit of the momentum and flow. If you feel that you really must pause, rewind it back a wee bit to get back on track.
    Also, LOL, there are some songs that need to be played in groups for it to be either mind blowing or profound. An example is Helpless & Satisfied. Those two must be heard together and I think most Ham fans would agree.
    However, if you’re listening just for teaching purposes, then ignore every thing I just said. 😊

    Lin Miranda (Hamilton) is the weak link in vocal performances, but he wrote the show, so I guess he can be in it.

    So I get that you're a vocal coach & you can't help but analyze each singer but man are you ever missing out on the whole production and story because you keep pausing on the important moments. Maybe you can watch the whole thing and go back to each singer afterwards for some specific details about their singing

    I know you will ignore this. But please, react to infinite live performance. They're K-Pop idols. All of their songs are quite high and surprisingly, they sing live. They're suck in lipsync.

    Fun fact: there are exactly 47 songs in the musical because Alexander Hamilton dies at 47.

    • @JGrantUK
      @JGrantUK 3 года назад +1

      There are 46 actual songs. 49 if you count the stage-only interlude between My Shot and The Story of Tonight, the Red Coat Interlude and the Laurens Interlude.
      On top of that there are cut songs like No John Trumbull that would have sat alongside the rest, rather than replace like I Have This Friend > Hurricane that would increase the number past 47.
      And there has never been a solid answer to Hamilton's birth year. The a two year discrepancy and both have evidence to back them up. Was he lying and saying he was older to move thrifty life quicker, or saying he was younger to look more intelligent and impressive? We don't know.
      Then there's the fact that (AFAIK and I've google a lot) Lin has never confirmed the fan theory that the 47 songs are for Hamilton's (possibly) 47 years alive.
      It would be really fun, but it's not a fact.

    You pause way too much. I love your commentary, but 20 secs every 90 secs would be bearable. I can't possibly watch you react to the rest. It would take forever since this 15 minutes accounts for a song that is barely 4 minutes. Do you realize that this play is 2 hours 55 minutes? Your review would take 10+ hours....

    Pausing after every verse is the most annoying thing one can do to react to a song. You aren't teaching us, you are reacting, react to it live instead of stopping every two seconds.
