  • This is a Cosmic Ocean% 7-99 run that meets the criteria of Pacifist (no kills), Criminalus (16 NPC deaths), Fidelis (24+ Kali favor), Major (a million dollars), and Celeritas (speedrun in under 1 hour and 56 minutes). While this run is Criminalus, Celeritas overrides Criminalus in the constellation name. While Criminalus is overridden by Celeritas, it still makes the lines of the constellation deep red. The two hardest criteria to meet are Pacifist and Criminalus. Continue reading for more information.
What is Pacifist?: If you're unfamiliar, Pacifist is an official run condition defined by the game. Since Pacifist is defined by the game's programming, players have to adhere to what the game considers Pacifist. You can verify that a run is Pacifist by checking the run journal entry at the end of a run. I also have a pink Pacifist tracker in the bottom right that reads the game's memory to verify that the run is still Pacifist. To enter the Cosmic Ocean, Hundun has to be "killed." In Pacifist, this can be done in several ways. The most common way is to let Hundun die to poison. In this run, Hundun is killed using the Arrow of Light in a very, very specific manner. If the player whips the Arrow of Light on Hundun and kills him, that is not Pacifist. Instead, I whip the Arrow of Light into the air and Hundun fires a fireball that knocks the Arrow of Light into himself. Since Hundun himself knocked the Arrow of Light into himself with his own fireball, that is Pacifist.
What is Criminalus and how is it Pacifist?: Criminalus is a constellation run condition that requires 16 NPCs to die. Contrary to popular belief, NPCs do not actually have to be killed by the player to achieve Criminalus, they only have to die. In Pacifist, this means you need to set up clever ways to get NPCs to kill each other or get themselves killed on obstacles. In this run, I made sure to raid the Black Market and Tusk's Palace because those places have the highest concentration of NPCs. The most common methods of getting NPCs to die were thorns, spikes, totem traps, crushing, and allowing them to shoot at each other.
I have to give credit to the original Reddit post from 2 years ago that first gave me the idea that Pacifist Criminalus was even possible: / fun_fact_pacifist_crim...
While I've known this run was possible for a while, I didn't quite get the motivation to do it until I saw a Reddit post on "The hardest run possible": / is_no_hit_no_gold_low_...
Pacifist Criminalus is NOT the hardest run possible, but there were a couple of mentions of Pacifist and Criminalus in that post that inspired me to actually do the run finally. I was originally hoping to also beat the Pacifist Cosmic Ocean% record with this run, but it ended up being too slow because of all the pre-CO setup and the fact that I played it very safe near the end of the run. The final levels were some of the most nerve-wracking levels I've ever gone through. Since I clumsily got myself cursed, I had to play the last levels on 1 heart. I could've easily died in the last few temple levels, but thankfully I made it through. I've been grinding this category for at least a week now, and my PB before beating it was 7-57. Pacifist Criminalus is not an official category on Mossranking, but you can view the regular Pacifist Cosmic Ocean% category here: mossranking.com/cat.php?cat=393
