    The Vashta Nerada terrified as a kid and they still do, on some level. They are an enemy that can't be outfought, outwitted, outmaneuvered, outrun, or anything. You just have to hope you don't run into them and hope that if you do, they find a meal before they find you.

      Not to mention the NV seem to be somewhat sentient. If they are animals and behave as such one could theoretically lure them in to a trap, if they are sapient then that's a whole other issue, you can try to reason with it but the likelihood is somewhat on the lower side to say the least.

      In hindsight, this is sort of sweet because it implies that even centuries later in what must've been series 6 or 7A timeline wise, the Doctor was still upset enough about what happened to Donna that he must have grabbed River and cried himself out on her shoulder or something.

      +redraven24 The pain in her eyes, she never knew Donna, only what the Doctor told/tells her about her. I can only imagine the pain the Doctor feels when he has to take away DoctorDonna's memories, pretty much 'killng' that part of Dona. I think that must be one of the hardest things that the Doctor ever had to do.
      Donna was an equal for him, she didn't fawn over him, wasn't infatuated with him, she was his friend, as close to an equal as anyone could be, even before she became the DoctorDonna. Donna, in my opinion, is the best modern-day companion, because she challenged the Doctor, called him out when he needed it.

    • @redraven24
      @redraven24 8 лет назад +75

      Greg Treadwell Donna is my favourite too. Her sass owned the whole relationship and brought out a different side of the Doctor. River and Donna are equal in my love. Donna for being, like you said, his equal without the romantic angle. A fiercely loyal friend that took no BS and enjoyed tackling new problems right along side of him. And River for having a strong romantic angle that was mature and not being so infatuated that she was afraid to call him out. She was fearless in her reprimands and fierce in her love and adoration. Two beautifully balanced female characters in my opinion. Broke my heart to see them both leave the Doctor :( And both 'dying' in order to save him too.

    I would LOVE to see the Vashta Nerada get brought back. They're just like the Weeping Angels, tapping into that primal fear in the back of your mind. In fact, they might be even worse. The Weeping Angels can only kill you. But what if the Vashta Nerada were to evolve and become even more deadly? Eating not just flesh, but thoughts and emotions and memories?
    They could consume the universe itself. The gnawing darkness. The Hungry Shadow.
    Definitely need to be brought back. :D

    • @Bluesit32
      @Bluesit32 9 лет назад +81

      Nah, the Vashta Nerada aren't villains. They're a hazard at best. All they want is to live in their "forest". That they could be talked down shows the lack of malice. A villain would have pressed its advantage...or gone back on its word. Instead, they bargained quite readily.
      On the other hand...if someone imprisoned them...turned them into an unwilling tool, that could work. And in the end, the master mind ends up trapped with them as the Doctor and company depart. Oh, the Doctor would offer to save them...but they'd be so confident that they can control the swarm. They'd be wrong. Very wrong.

      The thing is though, the Nerada would rip the flesh off you so quickly, you'd be dead within a millisecond. No pain. So in my opinion, the Nerada are the most humane enemies in the Doctor Who universe.

    • @dopilus
      @dopilus 9 лет назад +7

      1Worluck
      I wouldn't exactly call a bloodthirsty, carnivorous swarm: *_humane_*.
      They're not making a conscious decision to make sure your death is painless...they devour you abnormally fast because of how many there are (not because they don't want you to suffer).
      They exhibit absolute-zero compassion, kindness, benevolence, or anything even remotely resembling a heart. So, no -- _humane_ the Vashta Nerada *are not*.

    I know we're gonna see River Song again cos we're yet to see the scene where the Doctor gives her his sonic screwdriver... The one she uses in this episode doesn't look like Matt's so it must be Capaldi's screwdriver... Only explanation! That would prove that Capaldi will have his own sonic screwdriver!

    • @ereboros421
      @ereboros421 10 лет назад +4

      Except that screwdriver was based off 10's, and we've already seen when 11 takes her to the Singing Towers. Odds are, 11 fixed/upgraded the one that got broken in the Eleventh Hour and gave it to her at some point before the scene in the Last Night short. Moffat's made it clear, if he brings her back, it'll be because it's important to the story, not because there was a plan to do so. Her story was neatly tied up at the end of the last season, so I don't think she'll be back any time soon.

    It's really interesting how some of the greatest episodes seem to have the lowest special effects budget.
    In this one, they're filming in a library and the primary threat is a guy in a skeleton mask and a spacesuit.
    In Blink, they primarily film in an abandoned house while the characters are running from people in grey facepaint who canonically cannot move on-camera.
    They seem too simple to be scary or suspenseful, and yet the writing ABSOLUTELY sells it. "Limitation breeds creativity," I suppose!

    2:33 I love this part bc if we follow River's timeline. That means the Doctor already went through the Daleks stealing Earth and the DoctorDonna being born and what he had to do to her to keep her alive. Within the many years River and the Doctor were together, stories have come up im sure about their past and the Doctor told River what he had to do to her. So when Donna asks "Where am I in the futute?" River knows but not Donna...not yet

      Doctor who loves to homage. Just look at the Kubrick references in Empty child/doctor dances, the star wars references in the end of time part 2 and the impossible planet/satan pit literally having the same premise as event horizon.
      The matrix references in this 2 parter are no coincidence, the 2 worlds look visually distinct, the female lead knowing she should be in love with the male lead but he doesn't understand how she feels that way, obviously doctor moon is literally Morpheus and the fact that the fake world is where people who used to live, now live out their lives on a hard drive. What makes this better than the matrix though is the characters actually have an ounce of personality to them unlike everyone's performances in the matrix which remind me of a plank of wood.

    Donna: 'If they were on Earth, we'd know.'
    Uh, Donna, in the time you live, there's dozens, maybe even hundreds of people that go missing every year who are never found. Some get lost, some get kidnapped, some saw something they weren't meant to see and got 'taken care of', some do it on purpose to lose their former identity and create a new one and some... well, some we just can't explain at all. Like The Doctor said: 'Not everyone comes back from the dark.' You've been traveling with an alien that has a police box that can take you through time and space. You are, at this very moment, standing inside an alien universal library. Some parasites that occasionally nab a human who got lost in the dark shouldn't be that hard for you to believe.
    You know time travel is real, you know aliens are real and you know people disappear sometimes without a trace.
