It’s sad that we had to see the conclusion first before everything else because of her giving up her remaining Regenerations in “Let’s Kill Hitler” meant that River Song was her last form.
"Trouble is, it's all back to front. My past is his future. We're traveling in opposite directions. Every time we meet, I know him more, he knows me less. I live for the days when I see him, but I know that every time that I do he'll be one step further away. I watched those episodes right before these ones, and my heart broke a bit when River introduced herself. Of course, now that I've seen The Wedding of River Song, it's even more heartbreaking
Eh i mean she said the last time he saw her was when he took her to the towers. so if a night lasts 24 years, and they didnt stay together for the whole 24 years on darillium without leaving the towers then the 24 year night doesnt mean they had 24 yrs.
Jensen apparently what happened was the two loved in a small flat by the towers together for the 24 years. I think that is a beautiful way for the two to end their relationship.
Can we give credit to Alex Kingston for such a powerful farewell here? She knew just as much about River as we did at the time, but she says farewell to the Doctor (the incarnation she'll never work with again BTW) like she's been through what will turn out to be a centuries long relationship with the most remarkable man in the universe. Whether you liked RIver's journey after this or not ( I really, really did), you got to give credit to Alex Kingston for attaching such emotion to a story that hadn't been written yet.
It's honestly mindblowing. These scenes weren't that powerful at the time of release because of how little context we had, but going back to watch it I end up crying and it's extremely moving. Her performance delivers a beautiful climax to all the scenes that hadn't even been written yet.
I feel like I've heard that Alex Kingston actually WAS given some context as to who she might be to the doctor. At least more than was given to the other actors.
The most heart-breaking thing about this entire scene is that the Doctor, albeit in his 11th incarnation, DOES honour her request. He doesn't change their time together and they travelled together in time and space and ran.
thunderclap morgridge It isn't actually. There's a mini episode on the Series 6 DVD called Night of the Doctor in which The Doctor bumps into a future version of himself wearing a tux and River and discovers that they are going to Derilium. So it is the Eleventh who took her there.
Cryer24597 (Spoilers if you haven't finished season 7) I highly doubt that he pretended to love her. If anything, maybe a fraction of it was obligation to "debt". However, River ends up getting "saved" and her "ghost" or spirit or whatever still follows the Doctor around from time to time. If loving her was really just an act, I'm sure he'd feel a little stuck at this point because she isn't really gone.
1:35 "Not those times, not one line, don't you dare!" Alex delivers that line masterfully, as if she had already taped and lived as River, all those episodes from revealing who she was, all the way to the last "hello, sweety!" Great work.

Oh, I cried my eyes out the first time I watched this, way back in the day. I remember desperately hoping we'd get to see River again after this. Even before she came back, this was already my 2nd favorite New Who episode.
If the emotional part of this was Moffat's doing, then you're absolutely right. That said, there are other people working with him, so... IDK. He's definitely a good writer regardless though. At least three of my favorite episodes were lead by him.
SpankMeSanta but if he didn't bring her back, what would be the point of her? The brilliant thing about her is that she was indeed brought back and it made sense.
SpankMeSanta because when 11 meets her it way before she kills herself then 12 doctors regeneration he gives the sonic and she goes and this episode makes sense
[The Wedding of River Song] River: Time can be rewritten. 11th: Don't you dare. ........ [Silence in the Library] 10th: Time can be rewritten River: Don't you dare.
confusedlemur12 It's complicated. River repeats them because she heard them from Eleven. Eleven says them because he's heard those lines from River back in this episode, so he's repeating too. Now who first invented those lines? The fabric of time itself, perhaps? It's a lot like a bootstrap paradox.
2:07 my god david’s acting it’s just phenomenal, the way he’s literally trembling, you can just feel 10s desperation, and coupled with his expressions, just pure anguish at having to watch her die when he knows he must care about her deeply, even if he barely knows her yet, just exceptional
One of the things I love about this scene (besides the wonderful acting) is that the 2 minute countdown actually takes 2 minutes. That's rare in film and TV.
Ten's run really shows how the Doctor is finally opening himself back up to the possibility of romance, love, and even a family life, but has those hopes repeatedly ripped away from him. He fears it's impossible. River Song is proof that what he wants can/will actually be possible. And he is helpless as he watches her die, both fearing the heartache of and clinging to the hope of what their story will bring to his future.
...It gets even worse when you know the whole story - not just because you now know who River is and have come to care about her etc, but because she's sacrificing more than just her life here - If he dies here, that would mean he never crashes in her mother's garden fairly soon after, which means she never becomes targeted by Kovarian (who'd have no reason to manufacture an assasin or blow up the TARDIS if the Doctor is already dead), which, in turn, means River would get to have a normal childhood with her parents instead of the creepy orphanage from hell/ super soldier training/ scavenging for herself for decades. She's giving up a chance to undo the sucky bits in her past because she decided that the happy bits (many of which include the Doctor) are worth it. Wouldn't we all sort of want to feel that way whn our time comes? That it was worth it? Retroactively, this also becomes a showcase of how her character developement has come to full circle, from her clingy psycho younger version who was happy to break reality as a grandiose gesture in the name of her obsession, to the independent, cool, caring and responsible person we see here, quite capable of accepting the inevitable out of actual, mature and unspectacular love. I find it rather impressive that they managed to portray gradual personality shifts like that even when we see them all out of order.
Counterpoint, though: in Wedding of RS, it was determined that the Doctor's "death" at Lake Silencio was a fixed point in time, which gives more meaning to the exchange: "Time can be rewritten" "Not those times"
Except if the Doctor died here River wouldn't exist because River was conceived in the Tardis while in the time vortex and also her parents would possibly never get together if not for her or rather they would get together much later in their lives.
Back then, I thought River Song was a "strange" character and slightly exhausting to follow her allusions, for she appeared and talked about things no one knew about back then. It was years later, with all the story of season 5-7, that I realised what a magneficent character she is (in no little part thanks to Alex Kingston's amazing performance). And when she finally arrived on Darilium with 12, I started sobbing immediately, knowing what would happen now- and in the near future. And then, when the Doctor answered her question about how long a night on Darilium is, I cheered for them both! 💖
1st time watching: Oh thats so sad...I wonder who she is... 2nd time watching: OMG WHHHHYYYY!!!!??? NO, NO!! POOR RIVER!!! HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW HER!!!! BUT SHE KNOWS HIM AND-AHDJKHFAHSD!!! (CRIES A TSUNAMI)
+WolfPrideProductions and I screamed as Melodyyyy !!!!!! NO !!! OH River how will Doctor live without youuu ?? :'(( Oh her parents will never learn what happaned their daughter the girl&boy who waited will always waiting for their melody..And I'm so sure Tardis was sa sad in this scene and you know Tardis always knows she is her child too SOOOOO SAD
If I met my past self, who has just finished watching this episode for the first time, and told her that some day, it would become even more awesome, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't believe me.
Glenn Williams Yeah, but if you count(if you don't, NEVERMIND this) the regenerations he's 10 and 11. If you go by regenerations its: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,War Doctor(even though he doesn't call himself Doctor), 9, 10(David), 11(David again), 12, 13. Some other people said Capaldi starts a new cycle but who knows until there are more eps. Some other people counted it like this:CYCLE #1-1, 2, 3, 4. 5. 6. 7, 8, War Doctor, 10, 11, 12 CYCLE #2-1... I know its a lot of confusing "...stuff"
The best line in the whole series “it’s not over for you, you’ll see me again! You’ve got all of that to come, you and me, time and space! You watch us run!” Beautiful ❤️
"time could be rewritten" "Not those time. Not one line. Dont you dare." So sweet and yet so sad! River rather have those short time with the doctor than having to live without ever knowing the doctor. but technically she wouldnt be born.... DAMN river song is one of the most underrated character. i really hope to see more of her. but i want to see her with the eleventh.....they gonna show tenth with rose in the day of the doctor why can't river and eleventh be there as well.
Okay but, apart from the signing towers - which is also heartbreaking - River says "you've always known how i was going to die, all the time we've been together, you knew i was coming here". The way she realised the pain the future doctor must've felt throughout these years together, knowing she was going to die, that her end was a fixed point and the only thing he could do is saving her in the library forever.
*Ten and River:* "Time can be rewritten" "Not those times, not one *line*" *When Eleven is regenerating:* "I won't forget a *line* of this, not one day. I swear."
+The Potato King Turn Left is probably one of my top favorite episode and also the Journey of Earth 2 parts with the Christmas Specials. It's like they knew this is going to be there last season so they have been put all their efforts into each episode to make it unforgettable. Guess what. They did it.
River songs story is one of the saddest and happiest stories to ever be told. To keep a storyline going for so many years. To plan it ahead like this. The amount of note taking needed.
What I love is that this is so real. You can totally see River drawing The Doctor in so quickly. They've just met, but by the end of the episode, The Doctor loves her, just like that and it utterly makes sense.
1:36 to 1:38 river says 'don't you dare' well when matt smith was the doctor when he was going to die in Utah on the episode rivers wedding he said don't you dare when river said time can be re written and in this episode the forest of the dead it was the other way round river saying don't you dare and the doctor saying time can be re written
The saddest thing is even after just two episodes we all loved river song and that the doctor only found out what she would one day mean to him as she was about to die!! :'( x
... She never did, and she'll never remember him. They lived a lifetime (in dream transitions) in there, and now he'll never see her again, and even if he could she would look right through him and mock his stutter, because she was forced to turn back to what she was.
1:03 - The Singing Towers of Darillium - well that was a great night for them, The Doctor cries and new screwdriver... well now we understand everything... :)
+Hannah Icing im sorry to tell you guys this but.. it was 11 who gives her his screwdriver as shown in the doctor who mini episode first night and last night. www.dailymotion.com/video/xwp5yy_doctor-who-first-and-last-night_shortfilms
UGH! All the FEELS! It's like watching a friend die in front of her lover...my hearts hurt!!! Totally cry every time I see this now that I'm attached to River.
I cry every time too, and I don't even know anything about River beyond this episode (I'm new to Doctor Who). Every time, when she plugs the plugs in my heart screams 'NOOOOOOO!'
Considering he's either from another planet or the future(I honestly don't remember which) even though I haven't seen the specials yet, I'm going to say no. Would have been interesting though(but if I'm wrong, then sweet)
when River returns to prison after the fall of the Byzantium adventure, she says to 11th : "You, me, handcuffs... must it always end this way ?" that crushes my heart every time, as it probably did 11th. Se had no idea how true this was.
You Are Not Alone. Hell that was more heartbreaking than the River Song stuff. Especially given that you see him looking for Donna mere moments after she left with The Doctor.
OH MY GOD! HOW DID I NOT NOTICE SHE SAID THAT!? When the Doctor said 'Time can be rewritten!' and River tells him, 'Not those times! Not one line...' That's one of the big parts in Matt Smith's last lines~ God, this break my heart~ I love River~
The fact that from this moment on, everytime the Doctor saw River we were in his shoes because we knew exactly how she’d die as he did. Makes it far more heartbreaking
+Kristopher Awojobi Or because he knows she is going to die very soon. From River's perspective, she dies the next time they meet. Which for all we know is the night after 'The husbands of River Song'.
***** But I doubt Capaldi's Doctor would in the mini episode when the younger Doctor was speaking to the older one they even said it was her last day with him? Oh well maybe we just don't see the Doctor hand her a screwdriver.
Keep in mind, everyone - while it is a possibility that River was lying at some point, but we're told two things: 1) It was at the Singing Towers that the Doctor gave her the screwdriver. 2) During the mini episode Last Night, River reveals that the Doctor she's with at the time is taking her to see... the Singing Towers. When asked if that's the very night, the future-Matt-Doctor looks incredibly sad when he gives his answer-dodge of "spoilers"... effectively saying yes. The simplest answer is that the reason we were never going to be shown the actual events of the Singing Towers date is because 1) it didn't involve any of the Doctor's non-River companions at all, and 2) there was no big enemy to fight or huge threat to avert. It was a romantic (and for the Doctor, very sad) date, and nothing more. That's not episode material, not for this TV series.
***** Technically the last chronological appearance of River in the Doctor's chronology is in The Name of the Doctor, from when River is already dead. Which is before 11th's regeneration into 12.
I actually think this is one of the best scenes in Doctor Who like ever, if I hate to rate them: 1) Eleventh Doctors regeneration 2) Twelfth Doctors anti-war speech 3) Amy and Rory's final goodbye 4) River's Sacrifice 5) The Doctor wipes Donna's memory 6) Rose and the Doctor part 7) The Pandorica Speech 8) The Rings of Akhaten Speech 9) River reveals who she is 10) The Ninth Doctor electrocutes the Dalek
9th doctor's just this once, everybody lives. 12th - one hell of a bird in heaven sent. 12th - telling Clara his story without knowing who she is. 10 ending of family of blood.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the award-winning acting in this scene? Even if this is your first time seeing a Dr. Who clip, you know _exactly_ what is going on between them and how heartwrenching the situation is for both characters. Simply masterful.
This is an example of perfect television... my sister tried to get me into this show, so I downloaded this episode from itunes the day it came out. Was instantly hooked. Alex does an amazing job, masterful.
"This is River Song. She's going to be a major character for the next three seasons. However you don't know that because you think she's dead." This is classic Moffat though. A tragic death. A monster that could be real.
I watched this series backwards and this was the last episode with River Song that I watched. When she died, I just stopped the video (I was watching on itunes) because I was so devastated and didn't finish this episode until half a year later.
+DramaQueenForever2 The way they did it here. With a brilliant performance. I love Tennant's Doctor as the 2nd of my favorite and 12 is my 1st favorite. What I mean to say is that they are amazing actors and would have probably given the same amazingness they did here.
I remember the first time I watched this, I texted a friend "Who is River Song and why did she just make me sob like a baby?" He just laughed maniacally.
can we all just appreciate the fact that they set up a story starting with its conclusion this far back in the series?
yes
Iirc they didn't intend on doing this and she wasn't supposed to come back in s5 and was surprised when she did
@@Doctor_Spade no she was supposed to come back😂 wouldn’t have made sense if they didn’t

the very first time the Doctor sees River, is the last time River sees the Doctor
That Samoan Kid Second to last; The Name of the Doctor comes after this for River.
That Samoan Kid yea and after watching last years Christmas special (the husbands of river song) this has so much more meaning
Hmm no last time was in The Name of the Doctor. She was already dead
That Samoan Kid and so far the last time the Doctor sees River was before they first meet
Big Finish has entered the chat

Oh, I cried my eyes out the first time I watched this, way back in the day. I remember desperately hoping we'd get to see River again after this. Even before she came back, this was already my 2nd favorite New Who episode.
When people say Moffat can't do emotional ???? this is the most ive ever cried at an episode
If the emotional part of this was Moffat's doing, then you're absolutely right. That said, there are other people working with him, so... IDK. He's definitely a good writer regardless though. At least three of my favorite episodes were lead by him.
Moffat is great at stand-alone, horrible at the long game.
SpankMeSanta but if he didn't bring her back, what would be the point of her? The brilliant thing about her is that she was indeed brought back and it made sense.
SpankMeSanta because when 11 meets her it way before she kills herself then 12 doctors regeneration he gives the sonic and she goes and this episode makes sense
jealousharibo she kept coming back for 9 freaking years. that’s too long and too dragged out imo.
[The Wedding of River Song]
River: Time can be rewritten.
11th: Don't you dare.
........
[Silence in the Library]
10th: Time can be rewritten
River: Don't you dare.
Yeah, River's final lines are full of Eleven references.
kingofthings7929 or elevens full of rivers who can really tell
Why not both?
kingofthings7929 sure!
confusedlemur12 It's complicated.
Especially when he says there’s only one time I could (ever tell anyone his name) most likely talking of his last wife
She didnt do it for her future for the eleventh Doctor. She did because he is the Doctor. DOesnt matter the incarnation, she still loves her Doctor
And he is helpless as he watches her die, both fearing the heartache of and clinging to the hope of what their story will bring to his future.
...It gets even worse when you know the whole story - not just because you now know who River is and have come to care about her etc, but because she's sacrificing more than just her life here -
If he dies here, that would mean he never crashes in her mother's garden fairly soon after, which means she never becomes targeted by Kovarian (who'd have no reason to manufacture an assasin or blow up the TARDIS if the Doctor is already dead), which, in turn, means River would get to have a normal childhood with her parents instead of the creepy orphanage from hell/ super soldier training/ scavenging for herself for decades.
Counterpoint, though: in Wedding of RS, it was determined that the Doctor's "death" at Lake Silencio was a fixed point in time, which gives more meaning to the exchange:
"Time can be rewritten"
"Not those times"
Kendrix Havlik woa i never thought about it like that
Except if the Doctor died here River wouldn't exist because River was conceived in the Tardis while in the time vortex and also her parents would possibly never get together if not for her or rather they would get together much later in their lives.
@@darhkblu yeah, I agree. Her mere existence is conditioned upon this moment. Tough. She CAN'T rewrite her story without whipping herself out of it.
@@darhkblu That's not true. River songs would still be born but she wouldn't be half time lord
I cried like a baby - and my eyes well up every time I see this scene!
:'(( Oh her parents will never learn what happaned their daughter the girl&boy who waited will always waiting for their melody..And I'm so sure Tardis was sa sad in this scene and you know Tardis always knows she is her child too SOOOOO SAD
cries a river or enough to fill a pond
Billy Drumm I sea what you did there.
+Billy Drumm and to grow a rose
Mike Petersen STAHP!!! STAHP IT NOW!!!
If I met my past self, who has just finished watching this episode for the first time, and told her that some day, it would become even more awesome, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't believe me.
Glenn Williams but the tenth doctor is chris eccleston cos of the war doctor? :D I love this shit..
I know its a lot of confusing
"...stuff"
Glenn Williams Does it really matter?
if only when river whispered in doctor ear about his name
I wish she really said
look into my eye
The fact that Donna didnt find her husband is even more sad
DAMN YOU MOFFAT
And yet River did, but she died in front of her husband who doesn’t even know her yet, which just adds to the sadness levels again
Well she got guy from hollyoaks eventually
I think its for the best knowing how donnas story ends she would have to forget him anyways 😢
Actually she did in the end of time episode I know it’s not the same person
This scene means so much more to me now than when I first saw it.
Okay Moffat, you win this time, you can have my soul for now, but I'll be back....
You never came back
The best line in the whole series “it’s not over for you, you’ll see me again! You’ve got all of that to come, you and me, time and space! You watch us run!” Beautiful ❤️
Not one line don't you dare.... whelp that is even more taken from this moment. Makes Matts final speech have even more feels now.
"time could be rewritten"
"Not those time. Not one line. Dont you dare."
So sweet and yet so sad!
*Ten and River:*
"Time can be rewritten" "Not those times, not one *line*"
*When Eleven is regenerating:*
"I won't forget a *line* of this, not one day. I swear."
I feel so dumb now, when I first saw Amy, I thought she was going to be River.
LOL
what did you think she was going to do regenerate into river?
I thought she was going to grow and become River.
But Amy's skin colour was much too light to assume she was going to become river :P
People can get a tan, can't they?
First time watching River die I don't cry I just think "wow that's really sad."
Second time watching this moment I'm balling like a child.
This is just genius, this is one of the most heartbreaking moments in the series and we didn't even knew until years later
Another youtuber provided a great though to this scene: She punches the Doctor just like Rory does. He'd be a proud dad!
season 4 is hands down. the best doctor who season.
+The Potato King
Turn Left is probably one of my top favorite episode and also the Journey of Earth 2 parts with the Christmas Specials.
It's like they knew this is going to be there last season so they have been put all their efforts into each episode to make it unforgettable.
Guess what. They did it.
Upsets me so much that Donna didn't find that guy, and he saw her but couldn't even speak to let her know, that makes me upset :(
Wouldn't matter, she'd have to forget him anyways
River songs story is one of the saddest and happiest stories to ever be told.
To keep a storyline going for so many years. To plan it ahead like this. The amount of note taking needed.
"A new haircut and a suit"... a Capaldi line, many, MANY years later
Incredible
Going back to this after watching the 2015 Christmas Special.. Oh god the tears, the feels...
What I love is that this is so real. You can totally see River drawing The Doctor in so quickly. They've just met, but by the end of the episode, The Doctor loves her, just like that and it utterly makes sense.
That takes exceptional acting. Both acted this brilliantly.
alex kingston is beyond brilliant. her river is one of my favorite fictional people, ever.
I didn't cry the first time I saw this, because I guess I didn't understand, but I understand now...and it's killing me.
The saddest thing is even after just two episodes we all loved river song and that the doctor only found out what she would one day mean to him as she was about to die!! :'( x
As touching as the River storyline is, kudos to Donna for making my spine tingle as she screamed "I PROMISE YOU I'LL FIND YOU!"
Who else thinks that the new haircut and suit could be the 12th Doctor in this years Christmas Special?
YES
+Hannah Icing im sorry to tell you guys this but.. it was 11 who gives her his screwdriver as shown in the doctor who mini episode first night and last night.
www.dailymotion.com/video/xwp5yy_doctor-who-first-and-last-night_shortfilms
+Mark Alien (Markthealien) Yes, I know, I just think that would be cool
It would be cool a lot cooler than one line of dialogue.
+Mark Alien (Markthealien) river is going to meet twelve soon though, so that is a possibility...
John Christen oh, my poor friend. "You have all of that to come." But some of what is coming will stop your hearts.
+John Christen So do I.
Dr who knows a million different ways to break our hearts into million little pieces.
A million times
+Valpas Kankaristo Oh yes :(
2:50 - All these years we assumed Donna never found him. With the new episodes coming out this year, I wonder if maybe he'll make an appearance.
Considering he's either from another planet or the future(I honestly don't remember which) even though I haven't seen the specials yet, I'm going to say no. Would have been interesting though(but if I'm wrong, then sweet)
Did he make an appearance?
Thanks Mr Moffat......story complete!
10: Why am I handcuffed?...Why do you even HAVE handcuffs?
River: (Raises Eyebrow and smiles) Spoilers
when River returns to prison after the fall of the Byzantium adventure, she says to 11th : "You, me, handcuffs... must it always end this way ?" that crushes my heart every time, as it probably did 11th. Se had no idea how true this was.
Ami the only one crying after Donna missed the man she loved😭😭
banana Cherry I know! And she lost her memory so they have a really slim chance of meeting again 😭😭😭
I did the same thing, I have to tell myself it's just a show.
You
Are
Not
Alone.
Hell that was more heartbreaking than the River Song stuff.
Especially given that you see him looking for Donna mere moments after she left with The Doctor.
Delayed response but you are not alone!
@@chunkymonkeygaming It would be no chance at all right? Because if Donna remember it even on a tiny detail, she would die.
This is soo much more emotional in context
OH MY GOD! HOW DID I NOT NOTICE SHE SAID THAT!? When the Doctor said 'Time can be rewritten!' and River tells him, 'Not those times! Not one line...' That's one of the big parts in Matt Smith's last lines~ God, this break my heart~ I love River~
This is so much heartbreaking to watch after Capaldi's era.
This...after watching the series, this moment is so sad. Fantastic
I'm glad they gave River Song the ending she deserved.
“You got all of that to come. You and me, time and space…you watch us run”
And what a run it was
After christmas episode: "24 years"
Me: *bawls*
The fact that from this moment on, everytime the Doctor saw River we were in his shoes because we knew exactly how she’d die as he did. Makes it far more heartbreaking
Who's just seen The Husbands of River Song? It was amazing am I right!? :) :D
+DalekAlpha OMG Yes, so sad tho D:
It was an amazing end to River's story, don't you think? ;DDDD ;)
+DalekAlpha Terriblw idea to watch this after the husbands of river song...too many onions are being cut.
Luis Figuer You have no idea (Cries for hours and madly re-watches all river song episodes)
+DalekAlpha This scene is 1000x sadder now I've seen the Christmas Special
the 10th doctor has no idea that is his wife
+Dnbray like...4th wife
Kind of, he says that if she knows his name that it means something
+Shashwat Adhikari What? I think he meant that if he told her his name then he loved her.
+Kristopher Awojobi Or because he knows she is going to die very soon. From River's perspective, she dies the next time they meet. Which for all we know is the night after 'The husbands of River Song'.
John Jaxson Well but she is a part time lady.
"You even gave me your screwdriver"
WHICH SCREWDRIVER WHAT REGENERATION WHAT DOCTOR
"Spoilers."
fawjithnmawoewtnmaohtah
12th Doctor, 13th regeneration... or first regeneration, depending what you go by, and Capaldi's screwdriver
***** Nah it's Matt's doctor that does, I think there is a mini episode with it (I THINK) I remember watching it.
Whats even sadder is Rivers parents died shortly before this.
+RandomGingerKing what does that mean to a man who can travel through time?
***** From the doctors point of view yes but from rivers it was maybe a couple of days.
***** .......... I don't know lol
I'm rewatching this scene after season 6 and ohhhh the feels! Now this all makes sense :(
rewatch it after season 7 ep 5
0:54 EMOTIONS SET AT DONE RIGHT NOW. Can't handle the feels!
I actually think this is one of the best scenes in Doctor Who like ever, if I hate to rate them:
1) Eleventh Doctors regeneration
2) Twelfth Doctors anti-war speech
3) Amy and Rory's final goodbye
4) River's Sacrifice
5) The Doctor wipes Donna's memory
6) Rose and the Doctor part
7) The Pandorica Speech
8) The Rings of Akhaten Speech
9) River reveals who she is
10) The Ninth Doctor electrocutes the Dalek
I'm personally a fan of the Flatline speech of "The man who stops the monsters" as well
9th doctor regeneration???
9th doctor's just this once, everybody lives.
12th - one hell of a bird in heaven sent.
12th - telling Clara his story without knowing who she is.
10 ending of family of blood.
I would replace the 10th one with the Ending of series 7 when ghost River talks to the doctor before he enters the time stream to save Clara.
Sorry, I hate the anti war speech. Nothing against Capaldi-- it's just that the writing was so bad by then
Two true loves forever separated....
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the award-winning acting in this scene? Even if this is your first time seeing a Dr. Who clip, you know _exactly_ what is going on between them and how heartwrenching the situation is for both characters. Simply masterful.
Okay major props to the actress to convey such powerful emotions and doing so while not knowing what any of this even meant at the time
Now it all makes sense with The Twelfth Doctor visiting the Singing Towers.
Everyone talking about the Doctor and River, but Donna’s husband being taken away is such a good bit of emotional writing as well
"I'm not a hero. I really am just a mad man with a box." - The Doctor
This is an example of perfect television... my sister tried to get me into this show, so I downloaded this episode from itunes the day it came out. Was instantly hooked. Alex does an amazing job, masterful.
Please remind me how the HELL Rose's ending was sadder than this.
I hated Rose and this is so sad the river ending was so sad I cried
Because the weight of her death hadn't set in yet
river was ace more mature than rose and martha amy was ok 😁
Because we didn't know who the hell this river song is but after they introduced her again this scene is so sad
Clara's was worse.
He couldn't even remember her while she could.
00:17 'Auto-destruct in 2 minutes'
02:17 It happens exactly 2 minutes later
That's awesome.
Stunning moments! And the music! It´s just perfect!
"what are you doing? that's my job". i heard similar dialogues in the 2015 christmas special.
+Fluffernutter The special has a lot of callbacks to this episode.
"This is River Song. She's going to be a major character for the next three seasons. However you don't know that because you think she's dead."
This is classic Moffat though. A tragic death. A monster that could be real.
"There's going to be a day when I look into that man's eyes and he won't have a clue who I am, and I think it might kill me"
-River
There's shivers shuddering my whole body. Is this what they refer to as the feels?
you Know the 12th doctor did talk about River once I think he said him and her had a fight.
I keep watching the "Hello Sweetie" and the ending from "the husbands of River Song" and then this. I tear up every time. but I keep doing it.
Watching this after the Christmas special. Who is with me...
Me 😭
+cjkadar21 T.T me
Me, but hoping for a mini or whole episode about that 24 years
+cjkadar21 me but quick question...... where did she get the handcuffs? i forgot ;_;
NYlife1022 she did break out of prison a bunch
An incredible story arc this was probably the best one of the new doctor who from this episode to the husbands of river song
I watched this series backwards and this was the last episode with River Song that I watched. When she died, I just stopped the video (I was watching on itunes) because I was so devastated and didn't finish this episode until half a year later.
I can't stop replaying this. It's so sad and beautiful at the same time.
"Not those times, not one line. Don't you dare". Damn, tears just start pouring
I wept 😭
River's goodbye and Donna's goodbye to the men they loved with the music was just 😢
watching this after watching the husbands of river song....omg the feels overloaded and i can't cope!!! Goodbye, sweetie
+AndrewSir Kaiju (SirKaiju) Same
One of the saddest moments and none of us knew it at the time! D;
I try to watch youtube and suddenly I'm watching Doctor Who videos... e.e
+Frank Gallagher "Spooky, isn't it?"
It makes you wonder how David Tennant andAlex Kingston would have acted this scene if they had known the full story of River?
+DramaQueenForever2
The way they did it here. With a brilliant performance. I love Tennant's Doctor as the 2nd of my favorite and 12 is my 1st favorite.
What I mean to say is that they are amazing actors and would have probably given the same amazingness they did here.
She did know. From day one.
I remember the first time I watched this, I texted a friend "Who is River Song and why did she just make me sob like a baby?" He just laughed maniacally.
