There was a bit of for shadowing when the doctor and Donna are talking in the beginning, both Sky and the Hostess entered the vehicle at the same time and when you re watch the episode, knowing what happens to them at the end, it makes it really unsettling and to me adds a lot more weight to story. Another moment is when she was talking about the safety measures on the vehicle and jokes about them using the fire escape first. It's things like that which make it harder to see a 2nd or 3rd time.
Midnight is my personal favourite episode of Doctor Who, classic or reboot. I absolutely love how it puts the focus on the characters that are in every Doctor Who story but that we never get much info about, the random regular people that encounter The Doctor during his travels. It really shows how differently people can view him, as a genius who wants to save everyone, or as a arrogant control freak. Plus it's a pretty spooky episode to boot ;)
The midnight entity is one of the scariest monsters, not really knowing what it is makes it all the more creepy. This episode is fantastic, one of doctor who's best 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

One of the best episodes of Doctor Who ever, in possibly one of the smallest budgets. An idea can be better than any amount of effects or stunning visuals.
@@triciaramgoolam4045 I don't think it would, it was fear that caused Sky to be possessed in the first place and I don't think Donna would have been as easy a target as Sky

The actress playing Sky Silvestry did such a good job in this scene. Just look at that evil smirk while she manipulates everyone into turning on the Doctor, you can just see what a malevolent force is hiding behind her face.
I just wanna say that this is a really good bit of acting on Tennants part. His eyes made us feel like he's really possessed. I just wanted to say, really good acting
Katie Carlo I would just like to point out, that nowhere in the episode, do we see anyone controlled by the midnight entity (Sky after being possessed, Ten after it being ‘transferred’) blink, not once, only after the entity dies, do we see Ten blink.
I too noticed the absence of blinking, it was a nice touch. Tennant did the same thing during the soliloquy in his portrayal of Hamlet, he didn't blink once for a minute or so, very unsettling.
3:13 When he’s forced to repeat „molto bene“ and „allons-y“, he seems to shift his gaze directly to the stewardess, hoping that she’d make the connection since she’s the one that he initially said these things to.
The beautiful aspect of this episode is how well it represents the total break down of truth when people are scared. The disagreements on whether or not the thing was in the Doctor or was just draining him sprung up from a single suggestion, a single sentence. "Well it can't be, because I saw it pass from her to him." The visual aspect of an entity entering the Doctor's mind NEVER occured, and yet that one fearful passenger was able to convince practically everyone else of the Doctor's being the problem by suggesting a way to make the problem of figuring out what to do, backing it up with something she thought she may have seen. The moment where she asks her son if he'd seen it and he acts unsure, followed by her reprimand of "oh, don't be stupid, of course you saw" immediately sways the situation from being uncertain of anything to being certain of one thing, and that anyone who disagrees is weak or incapable of seeing what is plain to see. And that's SUCH a common trend among people in groups. The power of suggestion.
The only reason the hostess knew what happened is because the doctor got to know her, and she, him. She was a human being, prior to this episode the doctor would describe as brilliant and fascinating, and it doesn't matter whether she is an employee or "the help", he treated her with humanity and talked to her. If the doctor wasn't the person (alien) that he was, this wouldn't have happened and he would've been killed. Thats when she recognized Sky was not herself, but the entity. The doctor was fighting back, anyway he could, grabbing onto the seats, you could see him trembling as he had to say the the passengers to go ahead with killing him. The only people to come to his aid were shut down by a maniac, paranoid group of humans, and the entity knew this and played it to its advantage. The only way to defeat it was for one to selflessly give their life to stop the entity because there was no convincing the passengers. It probably thought all the humans would be too self interested to consider that possibility. The worst part, is we never get to know the entity. What was it's goal? What was its end game? Was it a ghost in search of a body? A vengeful spirit trying to stop humans occupying its planet? Was it trolling us? What happens if it succeeded in killing the doctor? Was it a an enemy of the doctor, but why? And what then after it has finished him off?
Honestly believe it was gonna drain everybody in that shuttle, most likely a hive mind. It's said bodies so hot, filled with blood, it definitely sensed them while they was moving past them and attacked the weakest link first
I feel that this is the episode that should introduce people to Doctor Who instead of "Blink". While I do think "Blink" is a good and well written episode, "Midnight" actually has the Doctor in it. Additionaly, since he's flying solo, this episode mainly focuses on his character, so people can be introduced to the companion dynamic later.
Nah it’s so much more effective to watch this after the other episodes. Being so familiar with 10 makes this episode so much more unsettling seeing him lose complete control of a situation, and his confidence and charisma being used against him.
@@TheRock-dp3vh Bullshit. This was the first episode of Doctor Who itself that I was introduced to and it was great. Not knowing anyone made me a lot less biased. In the end, I was excessively rooting for the Doctor.
@@thisissupposedtobeanonymous interesting, although I would argue that midnight is the only episode of its kind in new who. It may be misleading to introduce someone to the show through this as there isn’t another episode like it
Nah, the beauty of this episode is just how brilliantly it deconstructs the typical path an episode takes. If you were introduced to the show this episode, youd think the doctor is pretty bad at controlling a situation, which misrepresents the show greatly. Great episode though
Hostess was the MVP of this episode. She recognized the severity of the situation and knew what needed to be done from the beginning, had the guts to acknowledge what was actually happening when nobody else had the courage to even face that possibility (thus willfully blinding themselves to a potentially apocalyptic threat and ultimately even serving the demon for no other reason than their own cowardice), and most importantly gave her own life to deal with the threat once and for all.
Watch the look the Doctor gives the air hostess at 3:11. We know the Doctor, not being human, is conscious throughout all this, and he recognises the air hostess’ suspicion when hearing the Doctor’s signature catch phrase ‘molto bene’ coming from Sky. Such a small detail, but genius.
it may just be a further way of driving the pain home ! Since the ATTENDANT sacrificed her life for them and they don't even have a proper name to refer to her! hope CHRISTMAS was not horrifying for you ! we all made it through this time ! enjoy the Holidays !
@Blue Shark if that's for me , i was referring to someone else calling her the attentant ! ATTENDANT is what MacaroniMetkass meant ; The Doctor asks what the Hostess' name was and to add further pathos they never even knew her name and yet she sacrificed herself for these people ! that was in the epilogue that follows this scene! Night night [uh oh maybe i shouldn't repeat myself! ] GOODNIGHT!
The poor Doctor could HEAR everything, and he knew what was going to happen. He was the most terrified than he'd ever been, because he was completely powerless, and he literally had no hope.
It would actually be worse children are even easier to manipulate and they would die even quicker. The entity was taking advantage of the people’s fear of the unknown and the hysteria of being killed . It doesn’t help that they are trapped in a vehicle so the passengers were stressed It was extremely intelligent and even rendered the Doctor powerless
The Midnight Episode is easily one of the scariest episodes in the show. You never see the monster. You only see what it can do; which is apparently completely take over people's minds.
The only one's I did not hate in this episode is Jethro and The Doctor and Sky. He is just a kid who is trying to deal with this traumatising experience, and literally does nothing wrong and his character is generally not a bad character. And Sky is just possessed by the entity and wants to go home before hand. Fantastic episode.
You can't really blame him when you have your parents shouting at you *"YOU AGREE WITH US DON'T YOU?!"* because he feared punishment of thinking for himself. Add to that being young, not only was it traumatic, he was trying to process the situation and yet demanded to pick a side, rather unfairly.
It's better left as one off episode. I tend to find coming back to good ideas kind of waters them down. Like the weeping Angels. They never had the same impact again like the did with their first appearance.
Jacob Jacob Really? This is actually my least favorite episode and the reason why Tennant is my second to last favorite doctor in new who. I feel like 10's arrogance is what got him in that situation. 11 would have taken charge easily and found a way out, while 12 would have probably done the same or just thrown her out.
I remember when I was young during Christmas time, this and the one with the massive Cyberking were the ones on the TV. And I was interested in them. And now I have seen almost every episode except for the weeping angel episodes because I want to actually sleep for the week afterwards.
None of the other villains or other episodes disturbed me like this one. The weeping angels never phased me, but this just twisted my heart and felt dark, really dark. When they start yelling toss him out and you can see the doctor realizing what they're going to do and starts tearing up, ah my heart.
Interesting that you bring both episodes up since I’ve not long finished watching “Midnight” and the next episode I’m going to watch happens to be “The Waters of Mars”.
Except it isn't. I literally don't know a single person, let alone several, who would act anything remotely like those idiots did. Makes the story and the characters unrelatable, whenever studios attempt to make characters relatable through sheer stupidity.
The irony of your response is just marvelous Gabriel. Thankyou. :) And yeah, i do believe it is unrealistic. And even if it was realistic, all it does is make me root for the bad guy to kill them all.
Gabriel Tzukishiro Well, that's slightly harsh! It's only his opinion! Also, I myself am autistic and I found this episode quite enjoyable and I definitely understand how the characters were developed in the episode to show how people respond in a crisis!
I have to agree the reaction is very realistic, it is mob mentality and fight or flight response all rolled into one. Everyone likes to say they would never be the group; that they would be like the stewardess/ hostess or Dee Dee Blasco, but in reality we all have that primal fear waiting inside us... In the dark. And the cold. And the diamonds. Until you came. Bodies so hot. With blood. And pain.
Still the scariest episode. And what’s even scarier is this scene here, one of the rarest times when the Doctor was powerless to save even his own self. And that entity, no monster can beat it. Not one.
David's acting in this scene (and the entire episode) is off the charts. Just look at his face in this scene as the Doctor is forced to repeat "Sky's" words and is genuinely terrified, which is rare (and may be a first) for Ten. Just amazing.
You're supposed to hate them. They're clearly supposed to show the dark side of how people act under pressure, following the mob mentality and turning on people in an attempt to save themselves.
you know.... the creature got *really* cocky when actually started to use one-liners i mean, while i doubt anyone knew those were doctor-ish things to say... why would the creature go so far to reveal itself by spouting out words that sky didn't know?
I think the doctor had some level of control, she was using his voice after all. Maybe the Midnight Entity could direct what was to be said, but not the precise words to do it?
This basically the first time we've seen the Doctor truly terrified, sure he's been angry sad, but genuinely fearing for his life not a companion His most human moment.
This episode was so heart breaking, at least this part. This was tbe most realistic and human weve seen the Doctor. He was scared, so scared about dying right there by 'stupid' humans. Always will be my fav episode..
Not only is the entity itself just terrifying ... it's the people too. They're irrational, rude, awful, and perhaps they're the most unsettling part of the episode.
Of course their fears and aggressions were also amplified and clouded their judgements further too through the entity's telepathic manipulation on them. But yeah, sorta showed how horrifying they/we could be.
david’s acting is amazing. even him copying what she’s saying, no other dialogue, you can see the amount of pain he’s in and how much he’s trying to resist.
JustSomeRandomGuy Online We have kinda similar tastes in this show. We prefer RTD over Moffat but I liked the library 2-parter and the empty child 2-parter
The bit that really gets me about this scene is the insidious continuation of the creature's hidden motive. Presumably it wants heat, because it commented on how cold Midnight was and mentions the hot blood of the humans. But then it mentions the human ability to feel pain. All other antagonistic aliens the Doctor had encountered so far either wanted to rid the universe of other species that didn't count itself or just feed. What's really disturbing is why a creature would pay so much interest in human pain... not even the daleks or weeping angels bothered with that. Really disturbing concept. Any time any information was given, it raised more terrifying questions than answers. And nearly killed a being that the majority of alien villains feared and respected in a matter of minutes having presumably never come into contact with humanoid life before. It certainly made a gaping impact.
I’m rewatching now. I didn’t remember much about this episode from the first time I watched it 10 years ago. The true terror on the Doctor’s face was heartbreaking. Fantastic acting!
God the attendant saving everyone and the doctor just unable to do anything. And the other lady trying desperately to tell everyone "its sky!" This was an Amazing episode. I wish we could get a sequal.
Bro if someone who was possessed before starts talking about whatever possessed them like “It wants this, and it’s waited so long” they’re still possessed
Oh my god… re-watching this made me rethink how much pain and suffering the Doctor has pent up inside of him, to see his expression of suffering and pain…. And how relived the Doctor looked when he was saying ‘it’s gone, its gone’
Honestly this is the most terrifying episode, if only because this is most scared we have ever seen the tenth doctor. He’s truly powerless in this scene and you can tell through his eyes he’s shaken to the core.
Imagine that even as a normal human, too - you're frozen, unable to move or communicate, and your life is in the hands of a group of scared, irrational people. On top of that, your back is turned to them, so you also can't SEE them as they discuss whether to kill you or not, like you're not even there. And then, to top it off, since you're forced to repeat the entity, you start calling for your own death. Nightmare Fuel, right there.
The Doctor faced Satan himself with all the confidence and snark in the universe. Yet this unknown thing legitimately horrified him. I personally rank Satan SLIGHTLY higher than the Midnight Monster on the shit-your-pants-scary scale but only barely. This unknown thing is terrifying and the only thing that gives Satan the edge for me is that at least with the Midnight Monster, you can make theories and rationalisations to comfort yourself whereas with Satan, you've got the embodiment of evil staring you right in the face.
I will die on the hill that this was a scarier episode than "Blink". The Doctor's own genius turned against him, the real monster is just plain old human fear and paranoia and yet it unsettles the Doctor like we've rarely ever seen? Not even a contest.
Oh my gosh even now this episode grips me!! This scene is so beautifully acted out and gosh I've got goosebumps everywhere and my eyes are filled with tears ahhhhhh! Brilliant episode in my opinion. Just brilliant. Tennant's acting in particular is just incredible!
The latter part of Series 4 was brilliant. Library two parter/ Midnight/ Turn Left/ Dalek Finale. Doctor Who at its best. The show has deteriorated so much since then.
Honestly such a good monster! And I’m not talking just about our possessed passenger but human fear, driving irrational and unthinkable thoughts. Would love to see this creature make a return though, such a brilliant idea
What I think I find most fascinating about this episode specially and allways will. That for that one time, in a short period time. Doctor, on 1v1 against someone on solo. Lost. He was defeated and outsmarted. And that rarely happens.
Honestly this is one of my favourite episodes. One of the most powerful people in the universe rendered completely powerless. Bloody terrifying really.
Feel so bad for the stewardess The episode should’ve had the smart girl punch the wife in the face and tell her to listen “She’s baiting you to kill him, she’s telling you to get rid of the only person in here who knows what she is”
You know, one thing I love about RTD Era is the lighting. Some people say it’s too dated but I think that it’s very intense and sets the tone of it’s scene’s well- it makes the show more visually interesting. In my opinion it’s much better than Moffat’s over lit 2010+ style. I get that with progress in technology cinematography’s gonna change but I wish that we had more of that older, mid 2000s style, or at lease something similar

Dede and Jethro did too, Dede especially. I think Jethro wanted to help more, but he was being shut down by Val and didn't know how to defend himself
It and satan pit are both two of my favorite episodes of any show
“The doctor was the not the imposter.”

The midnight entity is one of the scariest monsters, not really knowing what it is makes it all the more creepy. This episode is fantastic, one of doctor who's best 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Lowest budget too
Very good story
Amazing episode till this day gives me the shivers
Its like Blair witch, we just have to make up of what it looks like.
I love that we never see what it does and are only ever given slight clues as to how it operates or what it's true nature must be
This story is brilliant. I love the claustrophobic feeling and it was done really well considering it only had 3 settings.

I’m happy that Donna wasn’t in this one, she would’ve slapped the entity out of her hahahah
That visual made me giggle so hard
I think it would have took Donna first.
@@triciaramgoolam4045 I don't think it would, it was fear that caused Sky to be possessed in the first place and I don't think Donna would have been as easy a target as Sky
The entity would've gotten severe trauma if the two encountered.
@@cortexius181 the hostess wouldn't have needed to sacrifice herself if Donna was there, Donna would have dragged the entity to the door and booted her out.
The actress playing Sky Silvestry did such a good job in this scene. Just look at that evil smirk while she manipulates everyone into turning on the Doctor, you can just see what a malevolent force is hiding behind her face.
Yep, the audio mixing was amazing as well. The synchronisation was perfect.
Didn’t even have to do much, she plated the seed and watched everyone else do all the work.
“It’s gone… it’s gone, it’s gone, it’s gone…” never heard the Doctor this genuinely frightened before.
Never seen the Doctor so helpless! It's sort of refreshingly terrifying!

You. You get it.

I feel like people should be introduced at episode 1 and work their way forward
The writing for this was absolute genius. Not only by far Russell's best script, but one of the best of any episode of Doctor Who
"The attentant, what was her name?"
The car goes silent. No one asked.
It connects to the part when they used not knowing the Doctor's name as an argument for throwing him out.
it may just be a further way of driving the pain home ! Since the ATTENDANT sacrificed her life for them and they don't even have a proper name to refer to her! hope CHRISTMAS was not horrifying for you ! we all made it through this time ! enjoy the Holidays !
He said stewardess, not attendant
@Blue Shark if that's for me , i was referring to someone else calling her the attentant ! ATTENDANT is what MacaroniMetkass meant ; The Doctor asks what the Hostess' name was and to add further pathos they never even knew her name and yet she sacrificed herself for these people ! that was in the epilogue that follows this scene! Night night [uh oh maybe i shouldn't repeat myself! ] GOODNIGHT!
When the woman says she knew it was her all along, I have never hated a tv character so much
The poor Doctor could HEAR everything, and he knew what was going to happen. He was the most terrified than he'd ever been, because he was completely powerless, and he literally had no hope.
How the hell did they not realise how calm and knowledgable she was, the children were actually smarter
It would actually be worse children are even easier to manipulate and they would die even quicker.
The entity was taking advantage of the people’s fear of the unknown and the hysteria of being killed .
It doesn’t help that they are trapped in a vehicle so the passengers were stressed
It was extremely intelligent and even rendered the Doctor powerless
The Midnight Episode is easily one of the scariest episodes in the show. You never see the monster. You only see what it can do; which is apparently completely take over people's minds.
It remains mystery just like the devil from Satan pit both beings that made the doctor fear
2:42 That scene is quite clever. The doctor is subconsciously (or intentionally) trying to gain time.
2:17 You could see that he was scared... properly afraid. poor Doctor
My Heart breaks for the Doctor here. He looks so terrified and there's nothing he can do.
What about the smart girl who figures out that it's the doctor talking or the woman who sacrifices herself?
You can't really blame him when you have your parents shouting at you *"YOU AGREE WITH US DON'T YOU?!"* because he feared punishment of thinking for himself. Add to that being young, not only was it traumatic, he was trying to process the situation and yet demanded to pick a side, rather unfairly.
What about Dede and the hostess who literally died to try and stop the entity ?
I mean, Jethro does help with the murder attempt on the Doctor. Feels like he did something wrong.

It's better left as one off episode. I tend to find coming back to good ideas kind of waters them down. Like the weeping Angels. They never had the same impact again like the did with their first appearance.
The last thing it needs is a sequel. The main reason this episode is so famous is because everything wasn't revealed.

Jacob Jacob Really? This is actually my least favorite episode and the reason why Tennant is my second to last favorite doctor in new who. The irony of your response is just marvelous Gabriel. Thankyou. :)
And yeah, i do believe it is unrealistic.
Not one.
Over a half-year later, still a second of the audio scares me. The best episode of New-Who ever, certainly.
their ability to describe exactly what is happening within their peripheral vision is really impressive
The look at the end also when that woman says "i said it was her" he is like "bitch, you are one word from being thrown out that airlock yourself" 😆
"I did hear you b*" 😂

God that scene ! I feel terrible just looking at it.
I cried half a dozen times watching it the first time.
David's acting in this scene (and the entire episode) is off the charts. Just look at his face in this scene as the Doctor is forced to repeat "Sky's" words and is genuinely terrified, which is rare (and may be a first) for Ten. Just amazing.
People in that episode... Oh i hated them all.
You're supposed to hate them. They're clearly supposed to show the dark side of how people act under pressure, following the mob mentality and turning on people in an attempt to save themselves.
The episode made me hate humanity itself for a while.
In some aspects that never went away.
Even the stewardess?
Jethro, DeeDee and the Stewardess were the only likeable characters
I think even Chara from undertale would hate humanity EVEN MORE if *they* saw this video
you know.... the creature got *really* cocky when actually started to use one-liners
i mean, while i doubt anyone knew those were doctor-ish things to say... why would the creature go so far to reveal itself by spouting out words that sky didn't know?
As you said she got cocky. Also the stewardess recognized the words as they were said by the doctor earlier when they talked.
I think the doctor had some level of control, she was using his voice after all. Maybe the Midnight Entity could direct what was to be said, but not the precise words to do it?
To say"He stole my voice, not I his"
She can only use words that have been spoken in this episode

Yeah just watched the ending... This may be my favorite Doctor who episode!
1:29 Merlin, come on. Do something! I know you can...
Emrys screwed the Doctor over here, helping to throw him out.
david’s acting is amazing. even him copying what she’s saying, no other dialogue, you can see the amount of pain he’s in and how much he’s trying to resist.

Galactic yo yo I agree with Human Nature And Family Of Blood but Blink is dreadful
JustSomeRandomGuy Online What's wrong with Blink?
Galactic yo yo it was very boring and was just a filler episode that shouldn’t have been made
JustSomeRandomGuy Online We have kinda similar tastes in this show.
And the other lady trying desperately to tell everyone "its sky!"
This was an Amazing episode. I wish we could get a sequal.
So much axiety in this episode
Man, that emotion Tennant conveys at 2:15 when he thinks he's about to get thrown out is crazy
Bro if someone who was possessed before starts talking about whatever possessed them like “It wants this, and it’s waited so long” they’re still possessed
Dee dees terror when biff grabs the doctor is horrifying, and then the hostess trying to intervene amongst the chaos... Amazing.
You know the my english teacher made us watch for a "assignment" and thats the only reason i ever got into doctor who
Oh my god… re-watching this made me rethink how much pain and suffering the Doctor has pent up inside of him, to see his expression of suffering and pain….
We need a spin off series for Jethro.
The moment you realize mass hysteria is the real threat, not the Midnight Entity.
Hope RTD continues with gems like this when he returns to the show.
The way David manages to cry in that scene just gets me
Poor Jethro. Being bullied and pressured into agreeing by his own parents.
I love how Merlin is just casually standing there
Feel so bad for the stewardess
The episode should’ve had the smart girl punch the wife in the face and tell her to listen
“She’s baiting you to kill him, she’s telling you to get rid of the only person in here who knows what she is”
The impostor was ejected
You know, one thing I love about RTD Era is the lighting. Some people say it’s too dated but I think that it’s very intense and sets the tone of it’s scene’s well- it makes the show more visually interesting.
In my opinion it’s much better than Moffat’s over lit 2010+ style. I get that with progress in technology cinematography’s gonna change but I wish that we had more of that older, mid 2000s style, or at lease something similar
If they were even paying attention past the Paranoia, they’d notice that the Doctor is only repeating after the woman, and not anyone else.
Very reminiscent of Lord of the Flies.
