A miter is when two boards are cut on the angle that fit each other a bevel is a bevel. you had that right idea for it. what you’re cutting is just an angle
I finished mine ... finally. Decided to stain it brown, but not perfectly. I wanted it to look uneven and more 'wild'. Painted the base brown (because I had brown paint handy) and danish oiled the star, made from poplar I think, to keep it light. Looks pretty good. I'll string some lights around it and see what happens. BTW, I didn't spiral it - l like it better with the branches randomly placed. Thanks for the video. It was nice to be able to finish something.
The block I used at the miter saw was just a straight edge to line up the pieces. The angle on it doesn’t really matter as long as it’s straight. Hope that makes sense…

Brett. I am in a manual wheelchair & am wondering, could I possibly cut each piece angled individually as it might be difficult, if not unsafe for me to cut the whole length with a circular saw? Would it work out the same?
I bought 5/8s dowels but drilled 3/4 holes by mistake, went and got 2 3/4 dowels as i started my second tree luckily i only drill 5 and the second tree so started over using 5/8 drill
I made one of these and had to sand down the dowel and sand the holes in each branch. How did you not have to do that? My dowel was 3/4" (it's what I could get) and I used a 3/4" Forsner bit. But nothing fit without all the extra sanding (which was a pain). Your video is great. Just found you. Already subscribed.
I had the same problem with the 3/4 dowel. I sanded it down by putting a screw in the middle of the dowel and then put the screw in a drill and running 100 sandpaper over the dowel. It took about 5 minutes!
@@rpaulvan Thanks. I'll do that next time. I'm new to wood working and still learning the tricks. That would have been a lot easier than doing the sanding by hand. :)
excellent 👍👌 the 3 foot is the one i was plannkng to do ..i did a 6 foot but it takes to much room and it was close to 60 meters of wood or 180 feet to much work ...because the saw🪵 mill ..is close to my house i bought the wood already trimmed to 1inch by 1/2.. i want to try now. the 1.1/2 inches by 1/2 inch ..i think it will look a lot better
Hi Brett’s I have a question I make the tree both sides are straight I only have a hand drill I just can’t seem to drill the first hole center 3/4 inch in it just want to walk I even did a starter hole but the 5/8 drill want to walk I think I go buy a drill press any help would be greatly appreciated thanks bill
The very top slat is about 2 1/4” at the long point. The bottom slat will depend on how tall you make your tree. I have measurements for the various heights in the description.

The 4x4 you use as a stop is that 13 degrees to nice work thank bill

A mitre is when the blade is 90 degrees to the work surface and a bevel is when you tilt the blade out of plumb.

You bet! The angels are just aesthetic. You could even make straight 90* cuts if you want where each slat is progressively shorter

I'm sorry about that. Nobody ended up ordering anything taller than 5 feet, so I never got that far. I'll see if I can figure it out.

Oops! I don’t think I ever make something without making a mistake. Happily, with wood, there’s usually a way to fix it!

Make a drill guide by first making a hole in a piece of scrap. Then clamp the guide to a few of the slats stacked together. Hope that makes sense!

What is the thickness of the star?
The star should be thick enough so that it won’t crack when you slide it onto a 5/8” dowel. About one inch thick.
