Twisted Christmas Tree - A Holiday Woodworking Project

- Santa joined me in the shop and we made a wooden Twisted Christmas Tree! It's made from unfinished cedar so it even smells like a Christmas tree. Below is a Parts List with basic instructions if you would like to build one of your own. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from The Carmichael Workshop.
Click this link for more photos and info:
www.thecarmichaelworkshop.com/...
Parts List:
50 Cedar Strips 3/4" wide x 3/8" thick x 14-1/8" long
2-Piece Stand 10" wide x 3.5" tall
1 3/8" Hardwood Dowel 26" long
1 Star
Steps:
1. Cut the 14-1/8" long cedar strips in pairs starting at 14", decreasing by 1/4" length for each pair. Save all pieces after cutting, including the cutoff pieces, because they will all be used on the tree. For example, when you cut a 10" piece for the bottom half of the tree, the 4" cutoff piece will be used in the top half of the tree.
2. Cut 3/4" dado half laps in the center of each piece. (Be sure to do a test fit first.)
3. Assemble stand and dowel rod. (Note that dowel rod thickness can vary from the store so always drill a test hole for a test fit.)
4. Cross-lap each pair of cedar strips in the middle and drill a 3/8" hole through the center, then slide it onto the dowel rod. Continue until at the top of the tree. (Again, drill a hole in a test piece and do a test fit.)
5. Drill a 3/8" hole in the base of the star and slide it on top. Note that you may need to cut the dowel rod to fit.

Brilliant and Entertaining. Merry Christmas
and Blessings from The Most High.
I loved the project and how the video was put together. Thanks for this cool project! And thanks to Santa!
That's a beautiful tree. thank you for posting this
Very heart warming vid
I love that quote “The widest point of the Christmas tree is 14 inches in diameter.” Marry Christmas.
Well done Steve, looks great !!
Made one myself. Time consuming but very rewarding. Thanks for the idea!
Creative Idea! thank you for sharing.
Merry Christmas to you as well Steve!
Pure genius Steve, a very merry Christmas to you and yours from the UK
Too nice !
Merry Christmas Steve!
Good luck next year!
This has to be one of the neatest projects I have seen in a while, yet it's still rather simple......something that even beginners could make.
Merry Christmas to you Steve
Wow thank you! I tried to do something I haven't seen before with so many pieces. It is simple, just repetitive. It's all friction fit with no glue so I can box it up too.
Well done explanation. Thanks
What a great idea.
Thank you Petrus!
You and Santa did a great job Steve.
Thanks Bill!
¡Wow! Wonderful job.
Thanks Francisco! It was fun to build.
What a clever way to do the video using Santa with all the positions you put him in and by using safety glass's and mask. I love it...I did notice he wasn't wearing eye protection at the drill press :)
Absolutely amazing I need to make this. Brilliant job.
Thanks Keith! I thought all those pieces would take forever to cut and drill, but it went quick doing two at a time.
amazing
Merry Christmas!
Wow, very cool. Nice, thank you for sharing.
+Jack Maravola Thanks Jack!
loved it Steve, great project!!! and fun to watch you!
Thanks Charlene! I can't watch myself sometimes. lol It's hard to talk to a camera. I have a new respect for news anchor people.
Great work I look forward to seeing your projects
Thanks Gavin! More coming soon so stay tuned!
Bravo!
Beautiful!!
Thank you very much!
I came across this a few months late Steve but perfect for 2014! This is terrific, many thanks.
Gareth Martin Thank you Gareth!
That was pretty cool. I liked it!
John Turner Thanks John! It's still set up in our living room. lol
Nice work
A very Merry Christmas to you Steve
Thanks Murray! Same to you sir!
Project looks awesome, and a great way to get rid of scrap pieces of wood. Merry Christmas Steve.
Thanks Dale! Same to you and yours! It was cool revealing that fresh wood underneath the weathered fence boards. I've got lots more to use too.
I love everything about this video! Informative, instructive and VERY entertaining! Thanks!
Thanks Tommy! The Santa stuff was for the kids. :)
@@SteveCarmichael Well I guess we both know what category that puts me in! Most people who know me would agree! Looking forward to exploring your channel to see what other great things await.
Love it, congrats and Merry Christmas!
Thank you! Same to you and happy new year!
Excellent project, we love it!!! :)
Cedar Roof Hi! Thank you very much!
That was great! My wife would LOVE one of these. I know I do. It's very cool. I didn't know how skilled Santa is at woodworking. I've love for him to come hang out in my shop sometime. Maybe if I'm good next year...
Thanks Steve! This was a fun project. You could do it in less than a day, without the filming. Santa was a big help! lol
Steve, I made a twisted Christmas tree. It was
fairly simple, but a lot of fun to make. Everyone at our Christmas party like it. Keep the projects coming. Merry Christmas to you and your famiy.
Awesome Ron! Glad you could use the idea. More videos coming soon. Merry Christmas to you too! Thanks!
Level of the santa:prooo

Thanks Jeanie! :o)
Really great project Steve the tree looks fantastic thanks for showing.
Merry christmas
Tony
Thanks Tony! Same to you!
Great job Steve, you had me worried when Santa was on the sled there.
Very, Very Nice Steven.
Merry Christmas to you & your family.
I will be making this this weekend, my wife will be pleased & surprised as will my daughters & grandkids.
Thank You.
Thanks! Same to you! It's a lot of pieces, but it goes by quickly with repeatable cuts two at a time. Good luck!
wow steve,i really enjoyed the video. the tree came out great.another project on my list.
Thanks Dennis! This was a fun one. It was strange to assemble something without any glue or fasteners. I can take it apart and store it, but will probably leave it out all the time.
Best compliments
I just made this tree and it was very simple. My wife loves it. I recommend planning all the boards to the same thickness. Cedar fence boards are rough cut and therefore vary in thickness as mine were. This makes it more time consuming to make the correct depth on the dados for each level. The sled was an excellent idea too.
Awesome! Glad you could use the idea Steve! Yeah, I've made a couple of different sizes of these and planing the wood is a good idea.
Brilliant idea Steve, and ended up looking really good. Great job mate.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Take care
Mike
Thanks Mike! I had no idea how it would turn out so it was a nice surprise...and my wife likes it too! Merry Christmas!
Those small leftover pieces look like they are shaped like presents to me. If you used some shavings from a plane to make bows for them, that would look nice too. I love this idea. I might try it for Christmas next year.
Nice video thanks .
Great project! Merry Christmas!
Thanks! I have an old Handy Andy tool set that my father gave me when I was a kid. Still have the box and the saw from it.
very nice
This is beautiful! I love it. I've recently gotten into small woodworking projects. This looked intimidating to me at first, but with the right tools and a little patience ( and some help from Santa) it' so simple! Definitely going to try this for the holidays
Peggy Watkins Thanks Peggy. Glad you like it. You could even skip the overlapping notches in the middle and just drill a hole, then stack the sticks up the dowel.
I was thinking about that as a lazy girl shortcut lol but I like the way the pieces fit flush against one another. If I wanna get better at my wood working, I have to push myself to pay more attention to the details.
Great project.... You always come up with great ideas and explain them very well so all of us beginners can jump right in and be successful... Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your family....
Thanks Amos! I appreciate the compliments. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Very nice sir. And Merry Christmas Mr. Carmichael
Thanks Doktor Jackal!
Great video, as always.
Thank you Father Thomas!
Now that's really nice. I like it.
Thanks Steve,
Roland
Thanks Roland! It was more fun than I thought it would be. Have a nice Christmas!

Nice project Steve. And nice to see Santa wearing a dust mask. Lol.
Thanks Richard! I wondered if anyone would notice that. lol
Great video man. My young niece and I enjoyed it. We're in the process of doing some Christmas projects also. Happy Holidays man!
Thanks Ed! Same to you! Yeah, I thought the kids might enjoy seeing Santa in the workshop. Happy Holidays!
Great project Steve, your videos have gotten better through out the year and I look forward to every video you put out, Thank You for taking the time and doiung this project as I know it took a lot of time to make. From my family to yours have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year!
Thanks man! It took me a second to figure out bo-c-fus. lol I appreciate the comments. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!!!
hehehe you're not the first to say that bout the name!
I've been reading it as bo-focus all this time, then it just now clicked a few minutes ago. lol
Lmao
Wonderful idea Steve, the tree looks great.
Take care and Merry Christmas
Carl
Great video
Thank you Carl! You too sir!
Why do all of your workshops look so clean and so nice?
Is is only me and the Cap'n Eddie Castelin who got it as it is?
And Merry Christmas to you :-)
From the Kurren Puupaja (in the RUclips)
Hi Kurre! Doing videos motivates me to clean up. lol I've always been a neat freak. My shop is a mess now after this project, so time to clean up before the next video.
Hi Steve!
"Doing videos motivates me to clean up" - well for me I just clean up the "few square feet" that I need LOL
My shop is an 100% controlled demolition site - and I do find my way around there - and I find my tools too :-)
Very nice Steve. Lot of work, but turned out great!
Thanks Jim! Yeah, it was a lot of pieces to keep organized. It went pretty fast with repeatable cuts and doing everything two at a time. Not bad at all actually.
Very nice dito to you
Cool build Steve, great project wishing u a happy christmas
Cheers
Tim from Wood4nothing
🎄🎄🎄
Thanks Tim! Merry Christmas!
Very nice project, and of course, Santa would suggest a " sled " in this project. Stay safe and Merry Christmas.
Thanks, yes, that was his idea. lol

Just amazing! Now, do you have some great ideas to paint or decorate these beauties? Tnx a bunch!
Hey men
That was a beautiful project.
This is something I need to make this coming christmas
Do you have plans? For this?
Thanks again for nice informative videos!!!!
desde valencia -españa- felizes fiestas, salud y prospero año nuevo 2015
David Cisneros Gracias! Same to you!
All your projects are cool! Always checking my RUclips page waiting for new videos! Keep up the good work :) also merry Christmas..
Thanks Robbie! I try to do different things, or do things a little differently than I've seen before. I had no idea how this would turn out and was pleasantly surprised. lol Merry Christmas!
We always admire the result and never the patience to do it. Well done Steve !
Thanks Robert! I almost didn't attempt this one because there were so many pieces but it went faster than I thought it would. Enjoyable actually. lol
I LOVE YOUR FRANKENSTEIN TOOLBOX!!!!
Thanks, me too! It was my father's and it was really dented and rusty. I cleaned it up but knew I couldn't get it back to looking new, so went with the beat up Frankie look. I'm a huge VH fan and collect VH stuff.
@@SteveCarmichael sweet!! Shout outs from south Texas bud! Keep it up!!
I like it! On my to do list for next year. What do you think about putting a chamfer on v the ends of each piece (like a Shaker table) to give a lighter and more refined look?
Thanks! I was going to round over the ends with my sander, but the thought of sanding 800 corners just seemed like a lot of extra work. lol I still might do that sometime though.
Very interesting project and presentation. I think I should hide this from my kids. If they see it I will be making 3 of them!
Thanks Rob! I made a second smaller one for my mother in law with the leftover pieces. It's really repetitive, but goes quicker than you think it would. I'll bring it to show and tell Saturday.
That should be a hit.
Very nice job, I have an idea as to how much work it took as I made a wind spinner. Good luck finding someone to paint the tree for you.
Thanks Gary! Yes, it is very similar to a wind spinner. Doing repeatable cuts on two pieces at once saved a lot of time. This one will remain unfinished for that cedar smell. lol
I just made a 6 foot tall one of these, but I just used straight planks rather then the x shaped ones.
Wow, I bet that is kinda heavy, but I'm sure it looks awesome! These are fun to assemble once all the parts are cut.
Супер! Я влюбилась в вашу елочку! Хочу себе такую! Очень жаль, что некому сделать.
Learn to work save !!!!!
I don't know what that means. What?
simply beautiful ...do you sell them , I'd love to have one ?
+Janice Moon Hi Janice - Thanks! I only made this one. I'm always moving on to something else and never get to make the same thing twice usually.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!! 😂😁🌲🌲🎵🎶🎄
