    In Mexico, at the end of the show, Saiki wanted to address the crowd. She gently asked for people's attention but many continued to talk. Just like an elementary school teacher she went "SHUTTTTT!!!" a fly would have been heard. And she graciously gave her message.

    This song is easily one of my top 3 songs from them. Whenever I want to feel good I play this song. Its gloriously beautiful, full, rich, complex, and flowing.
    What Miku does on this song specifically and across the catalog generally is that her rhythm playing lays down a canvas of sound that Kanami, MISA, and Akane are able to paint their patterns all over. So yeah, you're right she is the glue, the one that connects the dots of all the other instruments and vocals.
    Her skill as a rhythm player is steadily increasing and with it comes more freedom for Kanami to explore more interesting patterns and riffs.

  • @andreaspedersen3952
    @andreaspedersen3952 2 года назад +25

    Yeah there is a reason why it is on my top 3 list!
    Another display of their musicianship and how they never get lazy doing the easy thing: repeat riffs, basslines and drum patterns. Love especially Kanamis solo where MISA and Akane is accentuating it.
    More of the same? I guess "non-fiction-days", which got much of the same drive, but often overlooked since it's not "theirs".
    But still one of their earlier bangers, and you start hearing what direction they're heading.
    Miku has worked harder than most to learn to play the guitar.. But she has also had a good teacher in kanami, who before joining the band were giving guitar lessons.
    Great reaction btw!

    I agree with your take on Miku. She is the founder/leader/face of the band and main lyricist. She came up with their maid concept as well. When they create songs, she will get a rough demo from Konami and she then has to figure out the mood of the song and then come up with lyrics and harmony lines, then figure out the rhythm guitar parts. So she is the spark plug I like to think. I think there a lot of people in America craving that hard rock sound that Bandmaid has….so they can be successful here. Their sold out tour is a good sign.

    • @edwardallen4051
      @edwardallen4051 2 года назад +19

      The first time I saw a live song (Domination) convinced me that Miku was more than making up the numbers but it was when I saw the 1 hour of the Shinkiba Studio Coast concert that it became obvious that she is as talented as the rest, not simply her rhythm playing but her vocal contributions are not only substantial but absolutely beautiful, dual vocals / harmonies etc and a perfect match with Saiki. It still boggles my mind that these 5 talented young women found themselves in one band.

    • @Davey-Boyd
      @Davey-Boyd 2 года назад +11

      Totally agree, but I must point out that Kanami writes Miku's rhythm parts and records them in the studio too. I'm not knocking our dear little pigeon, I truly believe she is the heart and soul of the band. Her lyric writing and her harmonising are phenomenal. Plus she is now a solid rhythm guitarist live, so much so that musicians watching her often don't know she literally learnt to play onstage. And it is really hard to play one rhythm on guitar while singing a different rhythm at the same time!

    • @fedogma8407
      @fedogma8407 2 года назад +7

      @@Davey-Boyd You are correct because Miku didn't even know how to play a guitar when this band was formed. Miku also stepped aside as the main vocalist since the band realized that their style of music required a different style of vocalist yet her harmonies are a perfect match with Saiki. Not to mention that Miku is the spokesperson who was out front promoting this band as they struggled (paid their dues) to get attention. And in the end there would be no Band-Maid since once upon a time a little Japanese pigeon had a dream.

    Again Eric, you've nailed it! Great review of what could have been a simple song but it's Band-Maid, so they lay intricacies over intricacies (but only if they serve the song). Plus, you gave Miku some well deserved credit, not enough reviewers do. Miku knows her strengths and she uses what she has to firmly hold the centre and allow the rest to show their virtuosity. Kanami taught her, and Kanami trusts her and can write and arrange knowing that Miku will do exactly what's needed to make it all work. And her Zemaitis guitars have such a wonderful, throaty crunch to them.

    when you were speaking to Saikis' vocals and looking for that one word, what came to my mind was Unpretentious, she seems to just put it out there straigthup and without guile, she also seems to be able to do this and add emotion, also, little known fact about Misa, before she picked the bass at her music school she took the sound engineering class, so she understands the tone she makes with her bass, and can throw that tone around like an assassin, like you said hiding in plain site, great reaction, have a great day

    Great reaction once again. The great thing about the song is just how many great things there are about this song! Akane's drumming is incredible and if you listen to the whole thing you can hear her seemingly random beat variations. Then everything from the guitar solo on is just epic with that drop off into beautiful harmonies and then the gradual buildup where the chorus plays over the top of the soft Far Away theme and another guitar solo! All at the same time!

    Thanks for your insightful reaction Eric, I really enjoyed your knowledgeable analysis, however I believe you might unaware of how Band Maid (usually) records their studio & MV tracks.
    It is my understanding from what I’ve read, that Kanami (Who is also the primary composer) plays both the lead and rhythm tracks during the recording process,
    Miku does however play the rhythm guitar parts during all of the live performances (along with writing most of the lyrics, singing back up, and together with Saiki creating the primary “mix” for all of Band Maid’s compositions.
    PS there are “post threads” available on Reddit where Band Maid describes their creative process from beginning to end, for anyone who is interested..

    Dear Eric!
    Greetings from Shizuoka on a stuffy day just at the end of the rainy season and a blasting coming upon us!
    I have been watching your very professional reactions for a while but this is my first comment as I found difficult to add anything noteworthy which had been already uttered by your person or other commentators (talking of commentators, some "famous" ones are coming fast and thick on you! LOL).
    You justly mentioned that Kanami is very reminiscent of some celebrated guitarists of the 60's~80's. She clearly declared many times that her main influences were Van Halen and Carlos Santana! She is a rare person, even in Japan with a big population whose more than half are women. The great majority of the latter undergo a thorough musical education. She stared learning the piano at the age of 4 and even now always composes first on the piano before transcribing her creations onto her guitar. She then makes a demo she sends to Misa and Akane who then add to it. These two also underwent an extensive musical education from an early age and were studying together at a reputed music College in Tokyo. Incidentally none of them was born in Tokyo! You said before that Akane is a monster. She is, but she is a very methodical one and always writes her contributions on scoresheets first! Both Akane and Misa are also jazz educated and multi instrumentalists. Miku is an interesting case. She could not play a note on a guitar 8 years ago. Kanami took on her to teach Miku personally with the latter sometimes practicing 8 hours day, ending up with bandaged fingers and wrists. Miku showed the typical resilience and positive stubborn approach to life of Japanese women (I am French and have lived in Japan for 46 years. I lived under the influence of Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker,...). Many justly call Kanami a genius, but I have never heard of a genius who is capable of teaching someone from zero into an accomplished rhythm guitarist who is contributing or/and sharing vocals with Saiki on top of writing 95% of the lyrics. Saiki was actually recruited by Miku who understood her voice was too sweet for their kind of music. Things were not easy on Saiki either who had to go through risky throat polyps operation. She is extremely careful of her voice and puts a lot of practice and care into it.
    Saiki seems to be the leader of the band, but things are a bit more complicated. Miku is the leader when it comes to promote the group with acumen and wits. She is from Kumamoto in Kyushu Island, one of the grittiest parts in Japan. Kanami can be no nonsense when rehearsing before concerts. At the beginning of their venture some members were late at practice. Kanami was so upset that she cried. No one has been late since then! Simply put, everyone of them has many roles inside a group which could not survive with the departure of a single one. The chemistry is almost abnormal. They are like sisters but are very private. After all, except for Saiki, they are turned 30 and are very adult under their shy, ever so polite and humble attitude. Life was not easy on some of them, but they showed a unusual grit even for Japanese women!
    Just to end my babble, Akane is the goofy one, always ready to have a joke, but very practical and down to earth when needed. Miku is the manager. Mika likes her booze (but she has cut on it recently) and loves dirty jokes in private. Saiki is the only one to dare say a hard word some time. Kanami is the genius and always gone into a dream, although a monster just before and on stage!
    Take good care of yourself (ves)!
    Best regards,
    Robert-Gilles Martineau

    Eric, fantastically informative and interesting analysis. They are the real deal, indeed.
    Speaking of an all-English song, I’d love to hear your take on their collaboration with David Bowie producer Tony Visconti “The Dragon Cries”.
    A lot of the more BM purists don’t love it because they didn’t write the lyrics or basic arrangement or melody, but they did the instrumentation and performance and I think it’s stellar in the same vein of excellence as Blooming.
    The video deals with rather bleak subject matter - personally I think it’s great they can do something that speaks to the more serious and wider human condition. I hope you give it a listen before long.

    Everybody carries their weight in this band; rhythm guitar and backing vocals included. They have a unity of purpose and sound that isn't unheard of, but isn't that common either.
    It's a little frustrating that the Japanese music industry seems very insular (and that's a national characteristic, not just the music industry). The market in Japan is large, so they don't try very hard to sell to the West. It would seem like they'd want to license out tee shirts and posters if not vinyl and CDs, or make digital forms a little easier for fans in the west to purchase, but no, you have to order from Japan and pay outrageous shipping and import fees. You can buy CDs through JPU Records in London, but what about the States? It seems like the band is more interested in the States than their label... although Pony Canyon seems better than Crown Stones.
    By the way, dig the Robin Trower vinyl hiding in your background.

    Thanks for addressing the touring, US marketing and Radio questions I see a lot on this band. It was noticeable to me that they are billed pretty low at the one US festival they are starting their US tour at, and then most everywhere sold out and a couple had to be moved to larger venues. It just "feels" so close to blowing up big for this band. We've all seen that before and not actually happened. Lets hope the new label they joined last year can get it together, or at least try. Japanese labels are really weird I am learning.

People often overlook her because they would compare her to the other 3 musicians who are extremely good at what they do, whereas Miku picked up guitar and took a back seat vocally for the band and vision that she saw. She does so many intangible things in the songs and in the band that people overlook. Getting a more proficient guitar player would not make the band better, because of what she does with her vocals to support the songs as well, not to mention all the lyrics she has written, all the PR she does, and a ton more. For anyone that has been to one of their Servings (concerts), they will also know that only Miku can do Omajinai time.

    MISA chugging 16th notes with Akane's kick drum is a work of art. Those two melt into one here. The angelic harmonies here always bring a tear to my eyes, and to throw these harmonies into a hard rock tune like this is pure genius song writing.
    I feel the "99 Luft Ballons" and other were also from an era prior to the "Clearchannel" monopoly, which I'm not a fan of. I'm 65yo and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio in the 60-s and 70's so I know what good radio is. WNCR and WMMS for starters. Those were the days when a DJ would come on air and say" Boy do I have something for you guys"...then throw on a complete side of and album with no commercials..... ahhhh, the good ole days. Band-Maid will never get radio air time with Clearchannel........hope they prove me wrong but I don't care I like them to be small and niche just like they are. Great stuff again Eric...thanks.

      I spent a few years in Bedford listening to Kid Leo on the radio doing the Hot Lunch. I still have most of my maternal side living in Cleveland and have been for generations. Later in life, I went up there and interviewed with CC for a gig on MMS and the vibe was just "off". Corporations buy the cache' of a brand not the uniqueness of their success. This is something us old heads have lamented for decades now. There is a small swing back into the Personality Driven radio, but at small ownership stations with owners who trust their audience and programmers. Hopefully the pendulum swings back sooner rather than later.
      Cheers!
      Eric

      99 Luft Balons was also never intended for the US market. A DJ was supposed to play another song (not sure whether it was 99 Red Balloons or something else) but he played this instead...and the rest is history. Afterward, the label was trying to push the English version but it never really caught on like the German version did. And it didn't always work out that way, either...Falco's 'Rock Me Amadeus' was more popular in the English remix.

    If you haven't yet ( although I'm not a real metal head ) but check out Nemophilia. Another 5 piece all female Japanese (metal) group. They've done a lot of covers. Check their version of Journey's Separate Ways. As well as Bon Jovi's Bad Name, Detroit Rock City by Kiss. And a cover of a song by a Japanese group. The song is called, One Night Carnival. Nemophilia is to Metal what Band Maid is to Rock. Again, be well !

      I hope that means you will at least consider it. They don't have even have half as many followers as Band-Maid, but I as a non musician (and who wouldn;t know if someone is playing a wrong note or right note) think they are great. I am a fan of all female Japanese bands , and even some that aren't totally female eg Buffalo Daughter. I have been going through many on a list I found. There are some that are standouts and BimBamboom are the standout among the standouts for me. Note The Drummer has played with the the Rock Band Tricot. Anyway this is my favourite video from them. ruclips.net/video/gGeotFVkxGk/видео.html .

      I completely understand where you’re coming from on the maid uniform - and, absolutely yes, they are so good they don’t need them ofc. But, once you get to know them, their history and more about their founder, Miku Kobato, you might give them a pass.
      The short story - the “maid as performer” at a maid cafe is a common way to start out in the entertainment industry in Japan. Miku was working 3 jobs trying to make it in a pop-idol girl group; one job was at a maid cafe. It was her idea to combine the maid outfit with hard rock music - to create a cool & interesting “gap” in expectation and experience. Plus she simply loves the maid outfit concept so it’s something fun and interesting to her personally. She found the other members who felt enough the same to give it a try. They’ve adjusted their outfits over time to fit their unique personality - some are more maid than others (Misa & Saiki not so much, really - just fancy stage dress).
      And as others say, entertainment and rock has a long history of the performers costuming of one kind or another. Personally I originally felt the same and as a big Rush and Yes fan - thought they were beyond that - then I remembered the kimonos and robes they all wore - then bands like Kiss, Angus Young schoolboy outfit, leather pants, hair bands and makeup - what’s the difference?
      It’s the music that matters in the end - the look is just for fun - and Band-Maids music is top-notch. Just have fun with it and enjoy the great music.
      Rock on 🤘🏼

      Well, for one, they are a Japanese band, primarily playing to a Japanese audience with a Japanese aesthetic. In Japan, the visuals are just as important as the music. If you follow enough Japanese bands, you will see that. Having a visually unique aesthetic in Japan immediately sets you apart from every other rock band out there (and in Japan, there are MANY. It's the second largest music industry in the world) and makes you instantly recognizable and much more easily marketable. So if you don't get the maid costumes, that's fine. You aren't the primary target audience anyways.
