Great Reaction and Review! Band-Maid is one of those infectious bands that offer something familiar yet uniquely different and new. I believe It is rare thing to find a band that is proficient enough instrumentally to craft songs that form simplicity from complexity and visa versa all while reflecting a certain familiarity by incorporating the best elements of Rock/Metal/Punk/Funk/Blues & Pop which is catchy enough leaving you wanting more. I cannot ever recall a band that have written and performed music that has left such an effect where I have mimicked the vocals in a language that was foreign to my own. Now that's a rare feat and surprising! Nonetheless, I do believe I'm not the lone ranger in saying they posses something special. Some unmeasurable intangibles that is truly rare in this day in age. I feel fortunate to have a ticket to see them live later this year in San Diego. I hope your brother gets tickets and gets to experience this band live.
Great reaction! Akane is indeed a fantastic drummer. What I think sets Japanese musicians apart from a lot of western musicians, is their discipline and their modesty. From their interviews I get that they strive to become better with every song, every concert, every album. And they practice all the time. I know that Kanami writes an insane amount of songs (Kanami writes the music and Miku writes most of the lyrics) that never see the light of day and considering they have already over 100 recorded songs, it's incredible!
Band Maid is already my favorite band but with your encyclopedia of knowledge and references in music it gives me some extra appreciation and explains why I'm so drawn to them. Great reaction first time here...I think. I'll sub for more keep it up brother!
What I appreciate the most from Band-Maid is that the song never sounds exactly the same. There are parts that will remind you of that other part at the beginning of the song but Misa or Akane will be doing something just different enough that the song feels fresh all the way throughout
Just a quick comment to say thanks for an excellent reaction. Really enjoyed all of the insights and attention to details. Also, appreciate the attempt to remember everyone's names and correct pronunciations. Well done!
I think you're just hearing the blues, man!! The blues is the ultimate comfort music. I'm in my 60's so you are right smack on that Manners is reminiscent of the late 60's early 70's. (Like Cream, maybe...)
Thank you Eric. The first time I heard Manners I was transported back to my college days with bands like ZZ Top, Trapeze and so many others. These girls have taken that sound and added their own style and it is amazing. They are helping to save rock for all of us who miss this sound.
Eric, love your ears! I love me some Stone Roses, Replacements, and Mudhoney. But yes, “Black Hole” is especially Soundgarden. Every song off their latest album “Unseen World” is fire-both Manners and Black Hole are from UW. Try “Why Why Why”-it’s GNR with a Motown chorus and a Jane’s Addiction-y stony blues breakdown (but much better singing lol). It works. The other one I’d suggest is an acoustic number from this past Christmas called “Catharsis.” If they were around in the 90s they’d have a hit MTV Unplugged.
The list of bands and styles people are reminded of by just these two songs (or rather, elements of them) in this thread is pretty amazing. To me this isn't a sign of derivativeness, but an overall mastery of rock music: The Rolling Stones Rush Clutch Molly Hatchet jazz Living Colour En Vogue Led Zeppelin Montrose Janet Jackson the Stone Roses the Replacements Mudhoney Soundgarden ZZ Top Trapeze Faith No More Robin Trower the blues Cream Mountain Husker Du Jane's Addiction
Misa and Akane are a rhythm section that could easily compete with any I know. Each individually fantastic, but what they create together is insanely good from my non-musician point of view. However, I also think that Miku should not be forgotten and should be included by now. She is skilled enough by now to be able to support even difficult passages and at the same time give Kanami the freedom for her playing. Yes, she may not yet be able to play everything blindly in her sleep or by feel, but she is quite good to manage this task through hard training and practice. This line of the lyrics👇🏻says it all for me! 😎 _____________________ 「 _'Our rock never dies ever. Forever!'_ 」 --- from *BAND-MAID* 'Manners' 🕊
As a bass player, I was inspired by Miku to get better on guitar. And most of what she plays is pretty much within my reach (it's matching her speed and precision that's a challenge), but then I hit these sections where it's like Kanami was going "Ok, try THIS" when she wrote it.
@@stevehall5128 I can imagine. 🙈I think it says a lot that Miku can be an inspiration now, even for seasoned musicians. It shows that Kanami must be a good teacher and Miku a good student. :) 👍🏻 I would love to be a silent observer at one of their teacher-student sessions. I don't want to know how many times Miku curses Kanami for one task or another. 🤭
i can never identify who any given Band-Maid song reminds me of; they're very clever at blending influences, so you'll get something that sounds like Paramore over a White Zombie riff. Manners definitely gives me Heart vibes (Magic Man, with that off-beat groove). if you want another band that's steeped in old-school Blues Rock, Glim Spanky is great, like a combination of Janis Joplin, Cream, and The Beatles. Remi Matsuo has one of the most badass voices i've ever heard. "deceivingly authoritative" yea that's our Ice Queen. Black Hole gives me chills every time. Soundgarden but with Primus bass is extremely relevant to my interests, and they bring it all together into this breathtakingly intense package that's like Slayer Fast (around 220 bpm) while producing this absolute maelstrom of Post-Prog-Grunge. love it love it love it. if you want more mind blowing Prog-Punk madness, check out Sokoninaru, who are currently my personal favorite band, both brain melting and beautiful.

Unique. That is the essence of Band-Maid. They take every type of sound and combine it to make the music their own. Been a Band- Maidiac since 2016. They never get old and they always make me smile. Love your shirt btw. Best pink floyd album ever.
Just found your channel and I absolutely loved your break down, I really understood what you were saying and agree 100 percent. As for the hookup I'm going to see them in NYC and New Jersey cant help you out with Phoenix but they should really go even if they have to pay little extra in the aftermarket. I don't know if you have checked out Lovebites, another all lady power metal band from japan, if you haven't you need check out Holy War Live in Zepp diver city its amazing. Thanks again for a great reaction.
So many moving parts in each song. I could pick out bits of the Molly Hatchet type stuff and then the odd dance phrase pops in and out. Miku started out in pure girl group pop so bits of that phase in and out. As my oldest who writes a lot of songs has said "well if you realize someone else used your great new riff why not use three others at the same time?"
Ever get the feeling Akane has a little of the Professors (Peart) gene when it comes to fills serving the song. I haven't heard anyone who has her understanding of how musical drums can be to the overall texture of a song.
Ryan Mear who is another reactor /long time rocker who loves this song (the album version is a lot better imo) says it sounds quite a lot like a band called 'clutch' I dunno if they are an old band. And yes- they have some of the best rock musicians on the planet- Akane being one of them!
My first thought hearing Manners was the monster guitar hook from En Vogue's "Free Your Mind". The song also puts me in mind of Led Zep's "The Rover", Montrose' "Rock Candy" and a bit of Janet Jackson's "Black Cat".
IMO the En Vogue comparison is spot-on. Worth noting that that song was itself inspired by "Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow" by Funkadelic back in 1970. Also rather ironic that En Vogue was a prime example of a super-talented group where conflicting egos seem to have constantly split them apart, in contrast to Band-Maid's unity and cooperation.
Great analysis! You nailed it all. 👏🏻 (Only small slip is the lead singer is pronounced Sigh-key and I think you said Say-key once.) I love this band!!!
since i first heard Band-Maid i said that they have that familiar new sound. you can pick up their Santana, Hendrix, Deep Purple influences and tho i don't think i ever heard them mention it they make me think of Rush not their sound but their style and dynamics within the band
Story is Jimmy page caught one of their shows in Tokyo. He was so impressed with the drumming he ask to go back stage and meet her. So cool! Her a Misa are so good!
The groove, guitar sound and phrasing in the singing on Manners remind me a bit of 'Living Color'. It also has that retro, late 80s does the late 60s feel.
Your analysis, Eric... respect! Hope you keep going with the Trifecta of Metal, Hard Rock and Rock: Jinjer, Band-Maid, and The Warning -- all pushing their core genres into the next realm!🤘🤘🤘
@@Evilatem The Warning is rock. OC is metal. Can't compare genres like that. I still prefer Jinjer's prog groove metal over the oldish Metallica sound. OC is good, for sure, but overly familiar, for me. But one thing... all four bands will be hitting it hard at Shockfest in Oct. Thx, Evilatem!

I agree with you that some of their songs make you think back to where you might have heard it before. But the references seem to be from 30 or more years ago...things they would never have heard. And I can never quite put my finger on it either, like you. They're making some sort of universal rock n roll. Even Black Hole sounds like it could have one of King Crimson's songs.
Eric, from all the comments before me, it looks like you hit the nail with your comments and reaction. Band-Maid is special to all of us Maidiacs for various reasons. THE best live Rock band in existence. Think that's everything covered. The sound/tempo/rhythm you're hearing but can't place is the sound of the great Rock bands I went to see in the 70's, especially Led Zeppelin, but this is Rock for the 21st century.
Akane is also proficient is several other instruments, piano, organ, sax and I think, not sure, but I think the drums were just a side thing when she started, she is awesome. It is all so amazing to think that Miku's dream and finding the right people to put together actually made an amazing band.
BAND-MAID is always Fresh yet Familiar. Don't even try to figure out the influence of their songs. You'll blow a microchip. I've been trying to figure out the influence for the ending on 'Secret My Lips' for years. The only one I, and a few other people as well, have figured out was 'Thrill', and that's only because it's so obvious. It's 'Thriller'. But they didn't even write that one. It was their breakthrough hit on their very first music video and they weren't writing their own material yet. They are uncrackable. So unless I see the anime that has the song that reminds me of the ending of 'Secret My Lips', I'll never figure it out. BTW, it's Saiki's name is pronounce like (Sigh-Key), Psyche. not Say-Key. If you want to hear her scream listen to her in between verse in 'Play!' LIVE.
People will give you names of many other insane drummers, but Akane is my favorite. Her drumming seems to me very melodic, colourful and playful while the timing is always perfect.

Discipline, modesty yes, but combined with a fearless approach of their art. They're not afraid of madness and thinking outside of the box.
Band Maid is already my favorite band but with your encyclopedia of knowledge and references in music it gives me some extra appreciation and explains why I'm so drawn to them. Great reaction first time here...I think. I'll sub for more keep it up brother!
Drummer and base are absolute beasts!
Super talented and brings a smile every time.
Miku wears a red rose, Saiki wears blue.
These five girls rock harder than you. :)
It is there, it’s pure hard rock.
What I appreciate the most from Band-Maid is that the song never sounds exactly the same. There are parts that will remind you of that other part at the beginning of the song but Misa or Akane will be doing something just different enough that the song feels fresh all the way throughout
Well...Jimmy Page caught a performance of theirs awhile back and said Akane is one of the best he's ever heard. So there is that...
Just a quick comment to say thanks for an excellent reaction. Really enjoyed all of the insights and attention to details. Also, appreciate the attempt to remember everyone's names and correct pronunciations. Well done!
That bass line is of the charts tremendous
Omg you mentioned Robin Trower .... That took me by surprise .
Band Maid knows no boundaries ...
If you added a song to your playlist, for Band-Maid, the acoustic version of Catharsis is simply outstanding. Yes, I concur.
The groovy Band-Maid songs like Manners reminds me in some ways of a Grand Funk Railroad with the blues/pop/rock vibe.
The list of bands and styles people are reminded of by just these two songs (or rather, elements of them) in this thread is pretty amazing. To me this isn't a sign of derivativeness, but an overall mastery of rock music:
The Rolling Stones
Rush
Clutch
Molly Hatchet
jazz
Living Colour
En Vogue
Led Zeppelin
Montrose
Janet Jackson
the Stone Roses
the Replacements
Mudhoney
Soundgarden
ZZ Top
Trapeze
Faith No More
Robin Trower
the blues
Cream
Mountain
Husker Du
Jane's Addiction
Wow!!
this is late, i just saw it. my first was thrill, couldnt tell you but my first thought was led zeppelin
These guys and The Warning do this to me all the time, constantly reminds me of something long ago.... Awesome breakdown!!

I would love to be a silent observer at one of their teacher-student sessions. I don't want to know how many times Miku curses Kanami for one task or another. 🤭
It's really fun looking at their older stuff and the newer stuff and seeing how much Miku has grown as a guitarist.
@@phaeron haha!---yes !
i can never identify who any given Band-Maid song reminds me of; they're very clever at blending influences, so you'll get something that sounds like Paramore over a White Zombie riff.
Yes sir, I love me some Glim Spanky!!
Best reaction channel I have found this week. Soothing. Informative. Insightful. Well spoken and respectful commentary. Sir, you made an old head smile.
Awesome Reaction Brother! You do excellent breakdowns. Love the insight. Band Maid rocks!😊😎🤘🤘🤘🤘
Some serious Faith No More bass vibes in the beginning, loving it!!
I've heard a lot of comments from others that Manners sounds like a Clutch song. It reminds me of Soundgarden.
Unique. That is the essence of Band-Maid. They take every type of sound and combine it to make the music their own. Been a Band- Maidiac since 2016. They never get old and they always make me smile. Love your shirt btw. Best pink floyd album ever.
From Bluesy Rock to Speed Metal. These girls are awesome. Good job! and thank you.
Just found your channel and I absolutely loved your break down, I really understood what you were saying and agree 100 percent. As for the hookup I'm going to see them in NYC and New Jersey cant help you out with Phoenix but they should really go even if they have to pay little extra in the aftermarket. They put n an amazing show and worth every penny.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Akan’s is one of the very best drummers on the planet right now😎🤘🔥
I second that!!
Ever get the feeling Akane has a little of the Professors (Peart) gene when it comes to fills serving the song. I haven't heard anyone who has her understanding of how musical drums can be to the overall texture of a song.
Very informative reaction. Learn a lot new. Glad that u appreciate this band.
You just gotta love The Barefoot Assassin!!!!
MISA!!! MISA!!! MISA!!! 🥃🥃🥃 Manners reminds me of the groovy songs I grew up with in the 70s..... AH AH AH Ah Ah Ah ah ah..... 🤙🏼
Def a good classic blues rock groove in Manners ♥
I believe Miku said it best: yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! ♥
Really enjoyed your perspective on Band-Maid. Love this band! Well done and I look forward to your next one.
since i first heard Band-Maid i said that they have that familiar new sound. you can pick up their Santana, Hendrix, Deep Purple influences and tho i don't think i ever heard them mention it they make me think of Rush not their sound but their style and dynamics within the band
"Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah." - Miku Kobato
Personally, I'd replace The Warning with Orbit Culture.
(video seizure warning) ruclips.net/video/la21crvpjpk/видео.html
@@Evilatem The Warning is rock. OC is metal. Can't compare genres like that. I still prefer Jinjer's prog groove metal over the oldish Metallica sound. OC is good, for sure, but overly familiar, for me. But one thing... all four bands will be hitting it hard at Shockfest in Oct. Thx, Evilatem!
Great reaction I love when reactors help me understand what I'm hearing Band Maid loves playing fast and with their punk influence I never heard the grunge Black Hole always sounded busy to me I think I hear it better now Thank You
Thanks so much GREAT reaction!
“Formulaic, that’s for pop music”. Maybe the best comment ever. Nice sucker punch bro. For those that didn’t stick around, he wasn’t talking about Band Maid when he said that.
Subbed for more Band Maid. 🤘🏻
Geezo I'm really late here hah but had to comment. Your explaination about Saiki's vocals was SO GOOD Thank you.
Never heard anyone else talk about her higher register natural voice havinf less "natural" command and of course that makes sense. So I now appreciate when she does let go of some grit ( which I love) she is emphasizing really emphasizing command.

Band-Maid couldn’t have arrived at a better time with everything going on in the world. They lighten the heart and a smile on many faces. Thanks again.
and right on time for the one year anniversary of that particular okyu-ji :D
What would it take to get these ladies some radio play? Surely, you know people. I know, don't call you Shirley.
WARNING... (Your next Band-Maid song suggestion ;-)... It's bad MANNERS to stop listening to Band-Maid because you'll feel starved for musical excellence and joy and fall into a BLACK HOLE of emptiness... probably! 😵 Thx, Eric!
Got my VIP tickets to the show at the House of Blues in Houston. October can't get here soon enough.
Nice to see your follow-up was just as good as your first reaction. Really enjoying your insight. And speaking of 'familiar', that voice. Makes me long for the mid-to-late 90s 99x Radio DJs here in Atlanta.
Funny you say that! I actually did some voice work for both 99x and Fox 94 back in the day! I did a couple of bits and promos for them after a consultant got me some gigs doing V/O work.
Cheers!
Eric
@@TheWyldesidewithEricClark That's awesome. I miss Barnes, Leslie, and Jimmy in the mornings. :) A thing the kids will miss out on... morning drivetime.
@@mattdhorstman There is a push from independent station owners to go back to the "classic" programming where talent and music drive the station and not sales. If the product is top notch, the sales will come. For the past 40 years, the sole focus of most stations is sales with very little to any regard shown to programming. I sat in a chair and watched one of the Dickey Brothers of Cumulus say, "I don't care if there is only a Test Tone on our stations, you will sell advertising."...That was the beginning of the end for most radio. Consolidation and consultants ruined the radio we grew up with all for new cars and houses and cocaine and strippers.
Sorry for the rant.
Cheers!
Eric
That was some excellent analysis!
Jimmy Page, caught their act and wanted to meet Akane. She thought she was being pranked. They did meet. There is a picture of the two of them on the internet. Later, he said not in flattery, she was the reincarnation of John Bonham. High praise indeed!
There's no evidence he actually made the Bonham comparison, but asking for a pic with her is high praise enough.
THE best live Rock band in existence. Think that's everything covered. The sound/tempo/rhythm you're hearing but can't place is the sound of the great Rock bands I went to see in the 70's, especially Led Zeppelin, but this is Rock for the 21st century.
great reaction!🤘😎🤘
Akane is also proficient is several other instruments, piano, organ, sax and I think, not sure, but I think the drums were just a side thing when she started, she is awesome. It is all so amazing to think that Miku's dream and finding the right people to put together actually made an amazing band.
I believe it was the Trombone not the Sax that she started with as her first instrument at school.
I call Manner my Jazz fix, and Black Hole Ferrets on Meth. You really, REALLY need to watch Onset now.
No God is influenced by motorhead. Very ace of spades sound to it
Fantastic combination of songs from Band-Maid! Really shows their range, which is always expanding! Come on October!
Come on the EP too :)
@@GaryHolloway-810 Oh Yes!
@P in D 2 Po!
Hearing? A little Bad Comp, Foghat, Molly Hatchet, maybe a flavor of Skynyrd....with Cream? Def very "swampy"....
funk/punk/speed metal? sounds like infectious groove/ suicidal tendencies hybrid description
Wow! Impressive, a reference to Robin Trower!

People will give you names of many other insane drummers, but Akane is my favorite. Her drumming seems to me very melodic, colourful and playful while the timing is always perfect.
Akane has cited Bernard Purdie as an influence, and I think it shows in Manners.
They are our future.
Akane is not a drummer!
Akane is a virtuoso percussionist who chooses to PLAY the drums.
Extraordinary talent, I love her work.
Cheers and thanks!
Another all female Japanese band to check out is Nemophila. Hard rock/metal type of music.
I am always remembered on "Free your mind" by En Vogue.
BEFORE YESTERDAY, DAYDREAMING, BUBBLE, ABOUT US AND ENDLESS STORY !
No body was making music this good twenty years ago , yes maybe fifty years ago . I like Saiki’s moving between Japanese and English .
I thought the hook sounded like En Vogue- Free your mind, from the early 90s
Same here
