I agree with you 100%, you can hear when a musician or a band is having fun doing what they do!
Saiki outdid herself that night! Not just vocally, but especially when it comes to coming out of her shell. In the past she was called 'Ice Queen' and there were reasons for that. She was shy and reserved. In recent years, you've seen little or nothing of that. And that is reflected in her vocal performance and her presence. She always has been, but now more than ever (imo) she is irreplaceable for this band. ❤‍🔥🤘🏻

I am the old school rock fan. I stumbled onto Band-Maid just before they released Unleash and it did not take me long to figure out that these ladies know exactly what they're dong. "Thrill" was good, "Manners/Black Hole" was impressive, and then I watched "Onset" and realized I was in the presence of legendary talent. I immediately looked to see if they would be touring anywhere near me, because I already regret the number of bands that I've missed seeing and will never be able to see. Then I saw "From Now On" and I was on my hands and knees searching for my dropped jaw. The Maids are flat out amazing and they top themselves with every new release. Most bands go through a 3 year cycle and then either fade away or fall into a rut, but Band-Maid seems to have figured out the formula for keeping themselves fresh and innovative. I joined their fan club - something I have never done in my entire life - and I do not regret it. That's how I know when Band-Maid are touring or streaming. That's why I was able to get tickets to see them in May of '23 on the "10Ant" tour. I got up early on the Sunday after Thanksgiving to watch the live stream from Yokohama Arena where "Don't you tell me" was number 8 on a set list of 33 songs! They kept that energy level up there for 3 and a half hours with never a dull moment. There were several Misa-Kanami duels and there was even a Miku-Kanami dual lead on one song. (reminded me of Hide & Pata!)
You have to admire their work ethic. You have to admire their willingness to reexamine their music and try new things, experiment, and tweak things. Yes, young rockers: look at THIS BAND, they're doing it the right way, and doing it with smiles on their faces. The happiest metal band on the planet.

Hi Eric thanks for the great reaction to my request. Yes I am Issanman, confusing as I have a different handle on Discord and Twitch to what I have on RUclips.
This was one of the songs from their 33 song 3.5+ hours set at Yokohama arena on November 2023, the finale concert of their 10th anniversary tour. The ladies were fabulous for the whole concert and Saiki was just on fire and so engaging with the audience, really enjoying herself. In the early days a lot of people nicknamed her the Ice Queen, but I think that was totally mistaken, she was just not very confident and shy. However all their constant touring in Japan,Europe and USA etc has given her vast experience and she is now very comfortable as being a fantastic frontwoman. You are correct as well in that her vocals keep getting better, they are now more powerful (they would have to be to last for such a long concert, and I have noticed she now introduces some grit and rasp into her voice when required. Kanami is such an unassuming sweetheart until she straps on a guitar, and she will eitheer be away in a world of her own when soloing or have a smile on her face. Their one hour live performance at Lollapalooza has a double song Dice / Hate where again Kanami and Misa have an epic conversation on guitar and bass, Saiki just smiling in appreciation all the way through it. These members really like and appreciate one another.
You are also probably correct about why a lot of older fans like them so much. My music from about 1967 onwards was mostly guitar based bands/music, e.g. Santana, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, SRV, Cream, Rory Gallagher and a lotof the blues guys like Muddy Waters, Freddy King, Buddy Guy etc.
A quote I love from Rolling Stone about their Lollapalooza performance that I love - !They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear

This is a Japanese band (I know, duh) that has spent 10 years growing a super loyal fan base online. The maid concept may raise an eyebrow here but listen to the music and it's just pure, fun rock that generations of us have missed. They are simply really, really good and have worked their ass off to be that way. They live streamed this concert from Yokohama Arena in Japan and there were 30+ songs and strong from beginning to end.
They spent most of last year touring Japan and the US with 3 or 4 festivals sprinkled in like Afteshock and Lalapalooza. I saw them in Nashville and Chicago and will again when they come through.

I completely agree with you, and your assessment of why so many "rock veterans" like this band. I can only speak from experience, but I'm a musician who's agonized over what part to put where and maybe how to phrase something when writing a song or even a riff. As such, when I listen to music I am naturally going to pick up on things like compositions and arrangements. After years of this, you can become jaded at the lack of creativity in this department. A lot of people feel this way I think. So, when a band like Band-Maid comes along, writing songs the way Kanami does, it is literal honey to your ears. Kanami is literally the artist that I always really wanted to be. Hearing Kanami's compositions is like watching Jordan, Kobe, or Lebron play basketball. That's on top of her G3 level skills as an individual player.
I think that it could even be argued that Band-Maid are actually a prog band whose songs just happen to be short and catchy.
I've also joked that Band-Maid are the best 90s band that I've ever heard. I say that though not because they sound like anyone in particular. Rather because it was very common at that time for bands and artists to be highly diverse and draw from many different influences, and then present those influences in yet unimagined ways. The ladies are experts at this.
I enjoyed your review, but I enjoyed your statement about this even more because you touched on something about this band that I totally agreed with.
    Cheers Eric!

From Japan BAND-MAID is celebrating its 11th year with the same five members.
They are a group like a college basketball team. They respect each person's abilities and continue to make efforts to improve their own abilities, and when all 5 come together, they demonstrate great strength. They sometimes describe themselves as a sports group. During their activities, Saiki and Miku underwent throat surgery, and Akane injured her lower back and changed her playing style. Miku couldn't play the guitar, but with Kanami's guidance she came to where she is today. With the support of her friends, Kanami continued composing for over two years before finally being allowed to record it. They are bright and smiling, but have various dramas to achieve success. And they are continuing to work hard towards an album that will be released in August. And every time they release an album, there are more surprises than expected.

I'm one of those types that dig through music to see what makes it tick. Back many decades ago I went to school to be a musician. I studied music theory and music history, I played orchestra and jazz and took any gig that paid money (and some that didn't). Genre doesn't mean as much as some people think - there are some fundamental truths that apply to all music. They applied to J. S. Bach as much as they apply to W. C. Handy or Miles Davis, or Kanami Tōno. You don't have to know it's being done, it still works. It seems like magic; it still works.
One of the fundamental truths is that music is emotional. Your teacher tells you how to vary the tempo and connect notes, how to get louder in places and softer in other places, and all of that is to express the emotion in the music. How did Angus' practice become a song? Even though it was "only" practice, he was playing it musically and Mal recognized that. _Every_ member in Band-Maid does this. Drummers notice how Akane plays - not that she does anything impossible but she plays musically (and she's not a piker by any measure)! The same for MISA - she's my favorite bassist not because she plays notes nobody else can but because she plays musically, with style and grace. The whole band is a sum greater than the parts _because_ they are all equals. Saiki gets noticed because she stands in the spotlight but Miku is doing the exact same things and it works. Even if you don't notice it, even if it seems like magic, _it still works._

I completely agree. The guitar dual is ao welcome. However the musicians must truly be having as much fun (or more) as the audience for it to actually pull it off. I can see (and hear)that they like and care about other. They actually smile and laugh with each other and the Maidiacs. I really don't call this a "battle" . I think that it's more of a debate with Minchu and Misa, with Akane playing the role of moderator on drums. I have been fed to the teeth with tatted up scowling ugly guys dressed in black playing everything at 230 bpm showing us everything that They know how to do in 20 seconds. Band Maid are not the best or fastest musical shredders. However I think that they make the best musical choices in song structure and song writing.

I agree 100% with everything you said. Every time I watch this video I can’t help but think how Saiki has matured and become an amazing front woman. And you said about breath control is on point. There’s an early live recording of this song and a couple of times you can hear her run out of breath on a couple of phrases. And that is not an insult because if you try to sing this song some of those phrases are hard and there’s few places to catch a breathe. It doesn’t happen here and you get the feeling that she is so comfortable now, just like you mentioned.
And what more can be said about the “conversation” (as I like to call it) between Kanami and Misa? Just as the first concert I saw them do this song and this song the pure joy you see on their faces is a captivating as the solos themselves.
There’s a cool moment that flies by so fast it’s hard to catch the first time one watches this video. Just at the end of their duet, as the camera pans out, you can see on the large projection screen that Akane looks of her shoulder to them and smiles. Well, she’s always smiling that’s a given! 😊

Language DOES play a factor. That cannot be disregarded. Bigger factor, though, is that they are playing a genre of music that is not popular anymore. BTS may sing in (mostly) Korean, but their musical style is essentially R&B/Hip-Hop, which IS the popular genre these days.

after 10 yrs with the same lineup they can read each other like a book, and they enjoy it, also since they are all top tier musicians there's none of the rock star ego crap about 1 or 2 members carrying the band, they also all collaborate writing the music, of course it starts with Kanami, but she gives them "suggestions" of what she is hearing in her head so they all can participate, the drum line the bass line, she doesnt let her ego get in the way of making the song sound right, the lyrics (word placements and cadence) are up to Miku and Saiki

Great point on the ramps and drops in rock vocals. Saiki's vocals are so consistently steady and strong. And for every song of a show that can be 19-25 songs. For more typical and frequent ramps and drops, compare, for example, Bono of U2.
I caught BAND-MAID live in Minneapolis, and was impressed by her endurance and control of her voice. And, my being about three rows back, it was easy to see she was having fun performing, too. Just like the whole band!

They have kept it on the set list ever since and added the duelling solos just for live shows. Thanks for checking this out!

Yes as folks are pointing out..DICE/HATE? from Lalapalooza 2023..Camera work is not great at times...but you'll get the gist!. ..Article in "Rolling Stone Magaizne"
"Japanese Rockers Band-Maid Put Guitar Center Showoffs to Shame"
"There’s a pun to be made about how much Band-Maid ripped, but the Japanese group goes even harder than that. Fluctuating between hard rock, aughts nu-metal, and pop rock, each member of the quintet is a virtuoso in her own right with more than a decade of practice in Band-Maid alone. They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear."

Great reaction and that you big up Saiki. The last couple of years she has become a real force. The Yokohama Arena show in Nov 2023 was a peak of all elements of live performance- particularly Saiki's voice, but also the power of Miku's rhythm guitar playing. The DVD of the show is due for release soon.

Great observations. Good to see you come back to BM. Your spot on about Saiki. Her voice just keeps on getting stronger as does her confidence. All five members are top tier as well. Gotta make a comment on the Bad Company CD. One of the best first albums of all time. 8 great songs, no fillers. Paul Rodgers and Robert Plant are my favourite rock singers of all time ( Saiki is closing in though). Keep on rockin Eric!

    Acoustic version - ruclips.net/video/ayJtzPkgZTc/видео.html -

You will see that SAIKI has had a great voice for quite awhile.
YES! the dueling/call and response of the guitar and bass are needed more. BAND MAID has been doing this in many songs. I think they just don't do it the same way in each song.
    Some examples would be
    HATE? - ruclips.net/video/OvtKRZ9xt3E/видео.html

Sometimes they expand the middle section like this, sometimes you get disappointed because there was no "conversation" or drum solo in your fav song, then boom, they bring something special in the 😊 transition to the next song or completely change the whole intro of the next song. They always give you something special to look forward to. I wouldn't mind if they release the collection of every single mid-section "chat" or their different intros sometime in the future😊

Love Band Maid. My favorite band. Being that you like the guitar dual, I was going through your videos and didn't see a reaction to their song "Hate" from Lollapalooza. Awesome back and forth between MISA and Kanami on that one. Though the camera operators could have done a better job of capturing the whole thing. They probably didn't know what was going to hit them. Anyway here is the link: ruclips.net/video/OvtKRZ9xt3E/видео.html

You nailed it, Eric. There are a couple of bands that I do like, but I'd LOVE them if they had a guitarist that could play a solo and if they'd give their drummer (one of the best on Earth) a freaking drum solo. (cough - Pineapple Thief) That said, I've heard younger folks, including reactors, go on and on about how they hate guitar solos and how it's so "boomer-esque" or cliche or whatever. I'd like to tell them hey, your band doesn't do that because they can't, dude. They flat out can't do it because they don't practice. But I'm too nice to say that 🙂

Band-Maid is saving Rock music one song at a time. Any drummer can keep a beat, Akane commands each song.
Each member of Band-Maid is no better than the other and this is the reason they have been together as a band with the original members. MANY popular bands have never accomplished this due to ego driven destruction.
No egos is why Band-Maid just keeps getting better.......male bands just can't accomplish this......period!
